In The Garden

weep your patio areas regularly and treat any small weeds with a systemic weed killer as they germinate. Hoe weeds from gravel areas and treat with a residual weed killer to prevent more weed seeds from germinating. Damp down the floor of your greenhouse after you have watered in the morning. This keeps the humidity high but also lowers the temperature during hot weather. Clean out your water butts if they have been emptied, to remove sludge and algae in the bottom. Patio and Container Gardening Keep an eye out for ants setting up home in the base of planted containers and treat accordingly to stop them undermining roots so that the plants dry out from the base. Treat all of your permanent container plantings with a biological control for Vine Weevil larvae. They can devastate plants in pots if not kept in check. Round up any empty containers and give them a scrub out in preparation for autumn and winter bedding plants. Bulbs and Perennials Remove side buds from Dahlias as they

develop to get a single, larger flower for cutting. Continue to cut down stems on perennials as they finish flowering. Chop these up and add to your compost heaps. Divide summer flowering perennials as they finish flowering. Dig up the clumps and replant some of the younger, more vigorous growth. Cut Oriental Poppies and Border Geraniums to the ground, leaves and all, after they have flowered. Mulch around the crowns and water well. Many of the Geraniums will flower again in autumn. Trees and Shrubs Summer prune shrubs by removing two thirds of the long, upright growths that have developed since the spring. Feed Rhododendrons, Azaleas, Pieris and Camellias with a suitable granular fertilizer such as Vitax Conifer and Shrub. Water this in well and make sure that these plants do not go short of water now, whilst they are forming next year’s flower buds. Trim Lavender bushes after flowering to remove the dead flower spikes. Summer prune Wisteria by taking any long, unwanted growths back to five or six leaf buds.

PAGE 14 | Please mention ‘The Local Answer Ingleby Barwick’ when calling advertisers

LOCAL ANSWER Trim hedges that are becoming untidy – the final cut can be done in early autumn. Sowing and Planting Sow seeds of perennials that need a frost to germinate. Leave them outside in a cold frame or in a cold green house until they begin to germinate next spring. Take tip cuttings of woody herbs such as Rosemary and Sage to replace any old plants next spring. Peg down runners on Strawberry plants into pots of compost or soil. These can be severed from the parent plant once they have rooted.

LANDSCAPES DRIVEWAY & PATIO SPECIALIST

Lawns Continue to cut your lawn as required. Leave the grass clippings on the lawn to help retain moisture if the weather is very dry. Spot treat weeds as they appear with Verdone or another ready to use lawn weed killer. Dig out the roots and fill the hole with gritty compost to encourage the grass to re-grow. The Vegetable Garden Pinch out the tips of Runner beans once they have reached the top of their poles. Transplant Leeks to their final positions once they are the thickness of a pencil. Harvest crops regularly as they become available to keep your plants productive. Finish summer pruning side shoots on trained apples, back to four or five leaf buds. Wildlife Deadhead Buddleja bushes to keep them flowering into the autumn. The new flowers will be smaller but are an important food for bees and other insects. Make sure that you keep a bird bath topped up with fresh water. Place it in an open position but near cover so that birds can spot danger and avoid it. Leave seed heads on some of your plants as extra food for birds and small mammals. Leave some windfall fruit on the ground as a tasty treat for wildlife.

THE FORD KA+ - AN ATTRACTIVE AND ECONOMICAL SMALL CAR CHOICE

W

ith a modern tendency towards smaller cars thanks to the consistently high price of fuel and increasingly crowded roads, Ford have launched the latest version of the Ka - the Ka+ - and it should certainly please the Ford enthusiasts who are looking for a reliable, small, economic city car. Much nicer looking than the original - and let’s admit, now pretty dated - Ka shape, the new version is an attractive, economical and more fun to drive alternative to the Fiat 500 on which it is based. It actually borrows its underpinnings from the Fiat 500, but slight alterations to the suspension and steering make the Ford better to drive. It handles well through corners and the steering is firm and accurate, making it a really good ride for such a small car. Only one size engine is available – a 67bhp 1.2-litre petrol – and though it won’t set the road alight, it’s perfect for popping around town and taking advantage of the most minimal parking space.

Internally, Ford have obviously tried to keep costs down. The steering wheel reach is non-adjustable and though it does move up and down that tends to upset the angle a bit. The seating position is high, though, giving an excellent view of the road. The dashboard doesn’t make you quiver with excitement either, but its plainness makes for ease of use. Space-wise it’s what you’d expect from a city car, so taller passengers in the rear wouldn’t fancy a very long trip. Up front, however, there is surprisingly good space with more leg room than you would expect from such a small car. The rear seats fold down to give lots more storage space, but in the cheaper models they don’t split so it’s a case of passengers or storage, you can’t have both! Having said that, the boot’s a reasonable size so unless you’re trying to move house in the car it should be reasonably adequate, especially for most shopping trips. Standard equipment shows that, again, Ford have looked for frugality rather than expansive extras, and the entry-level ‘Studio’ trim doesn’t offer a great deal at all. No electric windows,

PAGE 18 | Please mention ‘The Local Answer Ingleby Barwick’ when calling advertisers

LOCAL ANSWER central locking or air-conditioning, for example. The ‘Edge’ trim, however, does offer all these plus extra body-coloured exterior trim and more cabin storage. ‘Zetec’ models have even more, with alloy wheels, a heated windscreen and both Cruise Control and Speed Limiter. You can use the steering wheel Cruise Controls to set a speed you’re comfortable with and the Zetec will maintain that speed without you having to keep your foot on the accelerator. If you need to go faster or slow down, then using the accelerator or brake as usual will override Cruise Control. The speed limiter is especially useful for driving in urban areas helping you to stay within the legal limit and is easy to adjust as the speed limit changes. Safety wise, The Ka+ scored four stars for adult protection in its Euro NCAP crash test, though whichever version you go for there are only two airbags fitted as standard which doesn’t compare too favourably with other similar cars these days. You can, of course, pay extra for more airbags – and also stability control – but that just pushes the initial price even higher. It does offer Rear Parking Sensors, though, so you can park with confidence. They detect when you’re too close to an object and show a visual alert on the centre console along with an audible warning. Hassle free, bump-free parking! There is also a ‘Hill Start Assist’ that uses the brake system to stop the KA+ from rolling back when you’re setting off on a hill. When active, the KA+ remains stationary for between 2-3 seconds after the brake is released. This gives you enough time to move your foot to the accelerator, helping to make it easier and safer to pull away on a tricky hill especially if there are vehicles parked behind you. Completing the driver’s aids is Traction Control that helps to prevent wheel slippage (or “over-spinning”) when driving on slippery surfaces. Traction control is especially effective when you need to accelerate from a stopped

position, slow speed or when climbing up hills. It makes driving smoother, helping you stay in control of the KA+ on icy roads and during wet weather. And finally to the economy. Ford claim a creditable 56.5mpg urban return with only 114g/km emissions - both figures that suggest reasonably low running costs, so as a small car it will do ‘exactly what it says on the tin.’ It’s an attractive and economical alternative to what’s already out there.

Butterwick Hospice ‘Make a Will’ Month n n n n n

Do you own a house? Own a vehicle? Have many possessions? Have life insurance? Have a partner, spouse, children, parents, siblings or other family members?

Then you should have an up to date Will. Writing a Will and keeping it up to date ensures your loved ones are provided for. Dying intestate (without a Will) means your wishes may not be carried out by those who have to deal with your affairs during a very distressing time. For example, who would look after your children if both parents weren’t alive? Do you wish your grandchildren to receive a gift? What about your siblings? During September, Butterwick Hospice is working in partnership with several reputable local solicitors in your area who are freely giving their time and expertise to help you make or amend a Will. All we ask is that you make a donation to Butterwick Hospice of £75 for a single Will, or £100 for a pair of matching Wills.

Don’t delay, act today For a list of participating solicitors simply contact Sylvia Stoneham at Butterwick Hospice on: 01642 628930 email: sylviastoneham@butterwick.org.uk or visit our website: www.butterwick.org.uk/willsmonth PAGE 22 | Please mention ‘The Local Answer Ingleby Barwick’ when calling advertisers

Humour IMPONDERABLES... OR HOW TO DRIVE YOURSELF MAD WITH IMPOSSIBLE QUESTIONS! There are no end to the number of imponderables we come across in daily life, so we’ve put together a few questions most of us have asked ourselves from time to time.... are there really any answers? 1. Why doesn’t glue stick to the inside of the tube? 2. Why don’t you ever see the headline ‘Psychic wins lottery’? 3. Why is a bra singular and panties plural? 4. Why is a boxing ring always square? 5. Would a fly without wings be a walk? 6. How come a pizza gets to your house faster than an ambulance? 7. Why don’t they make the rest of the aeroplane out of the same materials they use for the black box? 8. Why does no-one say ‘It’s only a game’ when they’re winning? 9. Why do we wash bath towels. Aren’t we clean when we use them? 10. Why does mineral water that has ‘trickled through mountains for centuries’ have a sell-by date? 11. Why is it called ‘Alcoholics Anonymous’ when the first thing you have to do is stand up and say ‘My name is Bob and I’m an alcoholic? 12. Why do they lock petrol station toilets? Are they afraid someone might clean them?

13. Why does lemon juice contain a load of artificial ingredients but washing up liquid contains real lemons. 14. Why do people point at their wrist when they’re asking you the time? I don’t point at my crotch when I’m asking where the toilet is. 15. Why is the third hand on a watch called the second hand? 16. Why does your gynaecologist leave the room when you’re getting undressed? 17. Why do we leave thousands of pounds worth of car sitting on the drive and fill the garage with a load of rubbish? 18. Why do croutons come in airtight packaging. Aren’t they just stale bread to begin with? 19. Why is it that when someone tells you there are more than a billion stars in the universe you believe them but if they tell you paint is wet you have to touch it to make sure? 20. Why do we use answering machines to screen calls and then have call waiting so we won’t miss a call from someone we didn’t want to talk to in the first place? If you actually do have answers to any of these you may just be sadder than me for asking the questions in the first place!

AN EMBARRASSMENT OF RICHES

I

t’s always said that the really top managers need a ruthless streak and it certainly looks as if Aitor Karanka is beginning to demonstrate his. Having got ‘Boro into the Premiership with a close knit squad whose team spirit and effort were cited as the main reasons for ‘Boro’s success, Karanka has shown with his summer signings that he doesn’t believe the same set of players could do the job required in the top flight. Some pretty awesome names have already been recruited with apparently even more on the horizon, and after two or three friendly games in which he has fielded entirely different teams in each half it’s impossible to see at this stage what his first choice eleven will be. I don’t envy him the task! It’s fairly safe to say, however, that Dimi’s clean sheet heroics during last season will be rewarded with a place on the bench as it’s hard to see Victor Valdes not being the first name on the team sheet. Add the likes of Bernard Espinosa, Alvaro Negredo, Marten de Roon and Victor Fischer to that scenario and it already looks like a completely different team will trot out against Stoke City on August 17th. You have to say because of that it’s a pretty exciting time to be a ‘Boro fan and after the thrills of last season it’s obvious that no-one

at the club is willing to let things drift into the sort of situation many newly promoted clubs experience. Being forced into panic buys in January to try and redress an unsuccessful first five months of the season is not what we need. Now more than ever it is vital to retain a Premier League position once it has been achieved and even though spending money has never guaranteed success it is nevertheless acknowledged that a properly spent budget will go a long way towards at least achieving safety. Even in the heady days of Juninho, Emerson and Ravanelli that last game defeat at Leeds still saw us relegated and no ‘Boro fan wants to see that happen again. Somehow, though, Karanka’s performances to date must give considerable confidence in his ability to take us to the next level. Results in European competitions in recent years have shown that while the Premiership may be the richest league in the world its top clubs are definitely lagging behind the best from La Liga, the Bundesliga and even Serie A. The difference in the Premiership, however, is that it has - over that time - become internally the most competitive league in Europe with anyone capable of beating anyone and surprise results happening

LOCAL ANSWER almost every week. So looking at ‘Boro’s prospects for next season we no longer need to look at the likes of West Brom, Bournemouth, Sunderland, Watford, Hull and Burnley as the only teams we can beat to guarantee safety. Instead we should look at the first game against Stoke as a potential victory and the same should be said whoever we play. Leicester’s performances last season must give everyone the heart to go up against the big boys of the league and actually win. To make things that bit more difficult, though, some huge managerial names have arrived, but both Louis Van Gaal and Jose Mourinho showed last season that previous glory guarantees nothing. At this stage, at least, everybody’s equal. I simply can’t wait for the first official team sheet and that opening day with a packed Riverside welcoming back the Premiership with the same fantastic atmosphere we so enjoyed against Brighton. Not long now!
