In The Garden
C
ut down herbaceous stems and clear the tatty remains of annuals, but do leave a little cover of the perennials that fade relatively elegantly (sedum, astilbes and grasses for example) They will provide winter interest as well as some much needed wildlife shelter - ladybirds especially appreciate winter quarters and will repay your hospitality by disposing of aphids in industrial quantities next year. Leaving sodden debris and fallen leaves around plants will only encourage pests and disease.
Clean out the greenhouse Clear out the greenhouse, wash pots and trays, clean, mend and oil your tools and throw away anything that is beyond hope or reasonable repair! Cleaning your greenhouse thoroughly will prevent pests from hibernating and leaping into action next spring. Wash the windows inside and out to allow maximum light in over the winter and scrub benches, fixtures and glazing bars with disinfectant, making sure you hose the whole place down really
well, especially dark and dusty corners. For really effective pest elimination, fumigation is the ticket. Move all plants outside, shut the windows, light a sulphur candle in the middle of the floor, (retreat at speed!), shut the door and wait until the smoke and fumes have completely dispersed several hours later. Your greenhouse should now be delightfully pest free!
Drain and lag... Save yourself untold irritation and expense by draining and lagging standpipes, outdoor taps, irrigation lines and water pumps in advance of sudden hard frosts.
Prepare your soil for next year For beds that lie bare in winter, carry on with the winter digging until the soil is too hard - use compost, manure, leaf mould - in fact as much organic matter as you can lay your hands on to replace the goodness in it. It can be left in a pretty rough state over the winter when the elements will break the clods down, making spring
PAGE 14 | Please mention ‘The Local Answer Ingleby Barwick’ when calling advertisers
LOCAL ANSWER planting infinitely easier! For text book soil improvement, you should add a layer of organic matter and dig it in by turning over spadefuls so it is buried below the surface. If this seems too much like hard work, just mulch the bed and leave the rest to the worms! If your soil is thin or heavy clay, just fork it over now; too much digging on the former will bring up infertile matter from below whilst great chunks of wet clay will remain rock solid over the winter and become nigh on impossible to break up next year.

Planting Plant bare-rooted trees, shrubs, hedging and roses as well as fruit trees and bushes. Soak the roots in a bucket of water for an hour first and protect against frost and wind if exposed.
Rake fallen leaves Fallen leaves prevent light and air getting to plants and lawns and these dark, damp conditions are also heaven on earth for slugs, snails and an unwholesome array of fungal diseases. However, don’t waste these tumbled treasures - given time they will decompose into fabulously rich leaf mould - aka ‘nature’s soil conditioner of choice’! Rake them up and throw into a simple frame made of chicken wire or wood. Failing that, black bin liners spiked with air holes will do if you can bear the sight, but remember to dampen the leaves first should they be dry (some hope!). Leaf mould takes about a year to mature (two in the case of oak leaves), makes a great top dressing for woodland plants such as rhododendrons and is an excellent and free home-grown substitute for peat. Don’t be tempted to use rose leaves, which can easily carry infection, or evergreens, which take too long to rot down.

Motoring
A QUALITY USED CAR IS A REAL ECONOMY DRIVE!
W
hile most people would love to be able to afford a brand new car there are obviously many to whom that will always be just a pipe dream so this month we’ve decided to look at a couple of models that make great used car purchases. We all want to save money on our motoring bills and obviously one of the best ways to do this is to buy a used car instead of paying loads of money to have something brand new that will automatically lose you thousands as soon as you drive it off the forecourt. In many cases, in fact, used models are still covered by the manufacturer’s warranty so the only thing you’ll miss out on is all that depreciation! If you’re looking for a decent sized family car, one way to ensure you get the best deal is to go for something that has become a typical fleet car. Buying an ex company car has a number of advantages. Firstly, company cars are always well serviced and are bought as much for reliability as anything, so you know you’ll be getting
something you can trust. They also need to be comfortable and attractive otherwise the company high flyers for whom they are bought would demand something better. Obviously, as a company car it would tend to have higher than average mileage but that means the price will be subsequently lower and you can probably pick up a really nice car for lots less than you’d expect. According to Auto Express, in fact, the ideal purchase in this category is the Vauxhall Insignia. It is, they say, a handsome, comfortable and high quality car that was updated in 2013, so buying a used model that encompasses the improvements made at the time will give you a great deal. Around £7,000 should be enough to get you a mid range Diesel with reasonable mileage - about a third of the car’s original cost! As a sizeable family car the Insignia offers a great spec, plenty of extras and a comprehensive choice of models, all of which make it a perfect used car option. Turning to the best choice for a premium small car it’s hard to look beyond the Fiat
PAGE 18 | Please mention ‘The Local Answer Ingleby Barwick’ when calling advertisers
LOCAL ANSWER 500, now one of Britain’s most popular small cars. It’s great to drive, very easy to park and comes with some excellent features for the relatively small price tag. Visibility is also great due to the high driving position and generous window sizes. Perhaps its best features are the opportunities to customise the car and make it almost unique to yourselves, with full body wraps, a choice of decals and plenty of bold colours. To have that option obviously only applies if you’re buying new, but with plenty of used models available, checking out used car web sites should give you a really enjoyable choice. The car itself has barely changed since its launch in 2007, with last year’s upgrade the first it’s had, though even then it only involved changes to front and rear light designs and a new touch screen infotainment system. That’s a good example of ‘it it ain’t broke don’t fix it, and
Fiat have obviously been happy with the response of car buyers so have left it alone. It’s consistent popularity also means that it retains its value really well once the initial ‘new car depreciation’ has kicked in so you’ll have something that’s really worthwhile. It’s also cheap to run, which maintains the economy throughout its working life. A great little car you’ll really enjoy.
STRONGER PENALTIES ANNOUNCED FOR USING MOBILE PHONES WHILE DRIVING
O
ne of the more sensible decisions recently made by the motoring authorities has been the intention to increase penalties for the use of a hand held mobile phone while driving. It’s amazing how many times you see someone driving along with the mobile in one hand and the steering wheel in the other. It’s hard to imagine that there are so many important calls that need to be made in such hazardous circumstances. So from 2017 motorists caught using a handheld mobile phone when driving face six penalty points and a £200 fine. Why wait that long? It should be immediate because it really is both dangerous and stupid. The modern reliance on continually texting, making phone calls or checking social media accounts is one of society’s biggest bugbears but to do it while driving
deserves the ultimate punishment. And for drivers who have recently passed their test that could be having their licence revoked and being forced to retake their test. The new rules will come into force sometime in the first half of 2017 in England, Scotland and Wales, and could see fines of up to £1,000 with a six-month driving ban for drivers who are caught twice for the offence. The announcement follows the RAC’s ‘Report on motoring 2016’ which showed that a record number of motorists admitted using hand held phones while at the wheel. Eleven million motorists admitted making or receiving a call in the last twelve months, while a further five million admitted taking photographs or videos when driving. These are astonishing statistics and the problem simply has to be addressed. These new regulations will hopefully help.

BANANA FUDGE LAYER CAKE INGREDIENTS:
- For the Sponge 175g unsalted butter, softened 25g light brown muscovado sugar 175g self raising flour 1 tbsp milk 150g caster sugar 3 large free-range eggs, at room
temperature, beaten ½ tsp vanilla extract - For the Filling and Topping 175g light brown muscovado sugar 75g double cream 1 ripe banana 150g unsalted butter
METHOD:
into the mixture with a metal spoon.
1. Preheat the oven to 180C and grease two 20.5cm sandwich tins (lining the bases with baking paper). Beat the softened butter in a mixing bowl with a wooden spoon or electric mixer until creamy. Add the two sugars and beat well until the mixture is light and fluffy.
4. Mix the vanilla extract and milk before folding into the mixture.
2. Gradually add the egg, beating after each addition. Add a tablespoon of the flour with the last portion of egg to stop the mixture from curdling. 3. Sift in the remaining flour and fold
5. Divide the mixture equally between the two prepared tins and spread evenly. Bake in the oven for 18 to 20 minutes until the cakes are a light golden colour and just firm enough to the touch. Turn out the sponges on to a wire rack to cool completely. 6. Meanwhile, make the fudge by heating the butter, cream and sugar in a medium pan over a low heat. Stir frequently until the butter has melted.
PAGE 20 | Please mention ‘The Local Answer Ingleby Barwick’ when calling advertisers
LOCAL ANSWER
Increase the heat a little and simmer for 3 minutes, stirring frequently to keep the mixture from catching. 7. Remove from the heat and stir vigorously for 30 seconds. Leave to cool, stirring gently occasionally. It will gradually thicken and is ready to use once it has become spreadable (You may need to put it in the fridge for a few minutes).

Humour IDLE CHATTER - IT CAN BE QUITE GOOD FUN!
A
t the risk of offending those who like a good gossip or to shout their mouths off in public a few great stories have come our way that show that while the concept of gossip and public abuse can sometimes be a bit hurtful it can also be extremely funny. Here are some great examples! A woman said to her friend “Peggy told me that you told her the secret I told you not to tell her.’’ “Well that’s nice,” said the friend in a hurt tone. “I told her not to tell you I’d told her.” “Oh dear,” said the first woman. “Well don’t tell her that I told you that she told me because I said I wouldn’t.’ (that’s what we men call the simple life!) “As you know,” said a woman to her friend, “I never repeat gossip. So listen very carefully because I’m only going to tell you this really juicy story once!” Mildred, the church gossip and selfappointed arbiter of the church’s morals, kept sticking her nose in the other members’ private lives. Church members were unappreciative of her activities, but feared her enough to maintain their silence. She made a mistake, however, when she accused George, a new member, of being an alcoholic after she saw his car parked in front of the town’s only bar one afternoon. She commented to George and others that everyone seeing it there would know what he was doing. George, a man of few words, stared at her for a moment and just walked away. He didn’t explain, defend, or deny; he said nothing. Later that evening, George quietly parked his car in front of Mildred’s house... and left it there all night! (Don’t mess with the quiet ones!)
A lot of ladies used to sit together every evening in a park and talk non-stop. On one occasion they were sitting very quietly and a gentleman who always walked past the noisy group every day was surprised to see them all so quiet. He knew one of the ladies so he took her to one side and inquired as to their silence. ‘Well,’ she said, today everybody’s turned up so we have no one to gossip about!’ A school football match was taking place and at half time the referee called over one of the young players. ‘Tell me,’ said the referee, ‘do you understand that you shouldn’t swear at your opponents, kick them in the leg or pull them back by their hair?’ ‘Yes, sir, of course,’ said the little lad. ‘In that case,’ said the ref, ‘would you mind going over and telling your mother!’
I HAVE A LITTLE SATNAV
This recently came to our attention and it certainly rang a bell with us (we’re all blokes, of course). Could it possibly have been written by Pam Ayres? Enjoy! I have a little Satnav, it sits there in my car. A Satnav is a driver’s friend it tells you where you are. I have a little Satnav, I’ve had it all my life. It’s better than the normal ones, my Satnav is my wife. It gives me full instructions, especially how to drive. “It’s sixty miles an hour”, it says, “You’re doing sixty five”. It tells me when to stop and start, and when to use the brake, And tells me that it’s never ever, safe to overtake. It tells me when a light is red, and when it goes to green,

LOCAL ANSWER It seems to know instinctively, just when to intervene. It lists the vehicles just in front, and all those to the rear. And taking this into account, it specifies my gear. I’m sure no other driver, has so helpful a device. For when we leave and lock the car, it still gives its advice. It fills me up with counselling, each journey’s pretty fraught. So why don’t I exchange it, and get a quieter sort? Ah well, you see, it cleans the house, makes sure I’m properly fed. It washes all my shirts and things, and keeps me warm in bed! Despite all these advantages, and my tendency to scoff, I only wish that now and then, I could turn the thing off! If only!!!!

AS CORPORAL JONES WOULD HAVE SAID... ‘DON’T PANIC, DON’T PANIC!’
I
n the words of Dad’s Army’s immortal Corporal Jones - ‘Don’t panic, don’t panic.’ There has been a little disquiet at ‘Boro over the past few weeks, especially after Watford, but following ‘Boro’s best performance of the season at Arsenal things are certainly not as bad as some people - and that particularly includes the national press are trying to make out. OK, the Watford match can only be described as abysmal, but it was nevertheless a game we shouldn’t have lost. And if you examine the other seven Premier league games of the season so far you can rightly say that apart from the first half against Everton ‘Boro players have never looked out of their depth. In reality, we could - and perhaps even should - have beaten Stoke, West Brom, Crystal Palace and even Arsenal so all the doom and gloom hanging around after the Watford game might seem a little premature. We’ve actually lost thirteen points from winning positions so far, a fact that proves how much better off we could have been. Fast forward a week, though, and the whole outlook of the season was completely turned on its head with the wonderful performance at the Emirates. The only thing missing on that occasion - and indeed the rest of the games - was the ability to convert excellent goal scoring opportunities into winning positions. And that’s why you really can question Karanka’s insistence on playing
Alvaro Negredo up front on his own with little or no support. It can be said that the 4-2-4-1 set up at Arsenal proved a master stroke after the Watford performance because Gaston Ramirez finally reproduced last season’s form, Gibson and Ayala played together again and showed why we kept so many clean sheets in the Championship and Victor Valdes finally became a capable ‘Boro goalkeeper. The real catalyst for the improvement, however, was the first start for Adama Traore who frightened the Arsenal defence to death with genuine pace, great footwork and some wonderful runs into their box. Long may that continue even though at only 20 he probably won’t be able to maintain that kind of performance every week. That the result could have been so much better is a thought shared by everyone who gave the team such magnificent support in North London, but once again Negredo was unable to make the most of a couple of excellent opportunities. But does he have competition for his place? Not according to Aitor who claimed prior to the game that Negredo was easily our best striker. Jordan Rhodes didn’t even make the trip never mind the pitch, which confirms he is not in Karanka’s plans, especially after the ludicrous decision to give him two minutes to change the game against Watford. The way he is being treated, in fact, makes it hard to understand why he wasn’t allowed to leave

LOCAL ANSWER towards the end of the transfer window when a few clubs were apparently interested. But back to Negredo, and frankly he may have convinced Aitor but for the rest of us the jury is definitely still out! But who am I to question the man who - in less than three years - has fulfilled all our hopes and dreams and - regardless of questions about the current situation - has shown he has the ability to once again confirm us as an established Premier league club. Aitor has proved he has a lot to offer and the best aspect of that is that Steve Gibson has always demonstrated enough patience and belief to give his managers plenty of time to prove themselves. So let’s hope that by the time I write next month’s piece he has created enough space between ‘Boro and the bottom three to allow us to breathe a little more easily. The last thing we want to have to do is call for Captain Mainwaring!
