ut back lupins and delphiniums that have finished flowering to encourage a second flush later in the season. Continue to deadhead the flower border on a regular basis as this will also encourage more flowers later on. Don’t forget to feed all the flower borders and containers every two weeks and water well in dry weather. Containers may need watering as much as twice a day in very hot weather. Keep up with the weeding otherwise the weeds will take moisture and nutrients meant for your flowers. Take time out to sit in your garden and enjoy!
Lawn Keep mowing regularly unless there is a drought. Set the mower blade slightly higher than before so that if it becomes very hot the grass will not dry out so much. Only water any recently sown grass or
new turf. If an existing lawn does go brown it will recover after the first rains.
Fruit and Vegetables If apple trees are still over crowded with fruit after the June drop then take out any blemished fruit and the central apple from each cluster. As soon as summer fruiting raspberries have been cropped, cut out the old canes. Regularly pick courgettes to prevent them from becoming marrows. Pick peas and beans as soon as they are ready or they will become tough and stringy later. Lift and use over wintered onions. Sow spring cabbage and winter salad crop seeds.
Wildlife Top up bird feeders and tables regularly but avoid chunky food that could be taken back to fledglings and choke them and keep the bird bath topped up with fresh water.

Plant marigolds around the vegetable garden to attract hoverflies and grow more plants that have single flowers rather then doubles as these seem to attract insects better. Don’t deadhead roses that produce hips as these will be a valuable food source later on in the season.

ALFA TO CONTINUE THEIR LATEST SUCCESS STORY WITH THE NEW SUV STELVIO
I
n my youth the one car that most of my peers longed for was an Alfa Romeo, because in those days it represented the most stylish and sporty model around. The company has retained that attraction to this day but many other manufacturers have overtaken it in both style and value. Recently, however, Alfa has come well back into the limelight following its very successful launch of the new Giulia saloon. They are now seeking to further boost their current popularity with the launch of their first SUV - the Stelvio and have sensibly decided to adapt many of the more innovative and appreciated aspects of the Giulia into this new model. That not only includes engine and chassis parts but also some of the styling, and the result is a pretty imposing unit. When it’s launched in the Autumn there will be 2 engines to choose from - a 2.0-litre turbo charged petrol with 276bhp, or Alfa’s 2.2-litre turbo diesel with 270bhp and a useful 470Nm of torque. Both cars will be four wheel drive with eight speed automatic
gearboxes as standard. That unfortunately means they will not be offering a manual gearbox, even as an option. Despite the fact that most Sports Utility Vehicles include the ‘sport’ in their title, not many actually achieve the ‘sport’ concept, but with the inclusion of many of the Giulia features and the promise of lightweight and strong engines this offering from Alfa certainly does. Alfa have also been able to keep CO2 emissions pretty competitive so that makes it a good option for the company car market. Entry level cost is expected to be around the £30,000 mark to compete directly against the likes of the BMW X3 and Audi Q5. Inside, it’s very much like sitting in a slightly elevated Giulia, with the dashboard layout and design almost identical. But there’s nothing wrong with that because the highquality finish keeps it very much upmarket. There’s plenty of room as well, so both passengers and luggage will be comfortably accommodated. Up front there are door

LOCAL ANSWER pockets that can hold a bottle of water and other assorted requirements, while storage in front of the gearstick includes a couple of cup holders and plenty of storage under the centre armrest. The requisite pair of USB sockets can be found between the front seats. The electric seats are easy to adjust to suit both tall and shorter drivers and there is also adjustable lumbar as well. The steering wheel, too, is electrically adjustable. There is also the option of superb aluminium shift paddles behind the steering wheel for great looks and a great feel. All Stelvio models are equipped with an easily controlled colour infotainment screen operated via a rotary dial mounted between the seats, and the Sat Nav is easy to use. Entry level Stelvio models still get plenty of kit as standard including: 17inch alloy wheels, leather steering wheels, a 6.5inch infotainment system, cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, automatic braking with pedestrian detection, electric tailgate

Eventually Alfa intend to launch a pair of entry level engines - a 2.0-litre petrol with 197bhp and a 2.2-litre diesel with 178bhp. At the higher end of the scale there will also be a 503bhp flagship version of the car, which will be based on the same Ferrariderived twin-turbo V6 that is a feature of the Giulia Quadrifoglio. Something for everyone in fact!

DIABETES AND DIET
A
s more people are diagnosed with diabetes, information on how to self-manage and improve symptoms is useful to be able to take things into your own hands. This month we’ll look at diet: as well as weight loss, medication, exercise and good sleep, diet is an important part of controlling your diabetes. If you eat too much high GI foods, they break down quickly and cause blood glucose levels to rise sharply ‘spike’. Examples of high GI foods are white bread, sweetened drinks, biscuits, pastries and potatoes. Low GI foods break down more slowly and less likely to cause a rapid increase in blood glucose, also they tend to be healthier. Examples include: wholemeal bread, milk, beans, leafy green vegetables and berries.
Here’s a recipe that can be made quickly and easily – beans are high in fibre and good for protein, tomates are a great source of vitamins C and A and rich in lycopene which is an antioxidant (body absorbs this better with cooked tomatoes):
Quick Bean Chilli Ingredients: 1 tablespoon of oil, 1 large onion, 2 stalks celery, 1 clove garlic, chilli powder or flakes (put in ½ - 1 tsp depending on heat you want), 1 red and 1 yellow pepper, 2 small courgettes or l large one, 1 tin low sodium tomatoes, 1 dessert spoon tomato puree, 2 tsp veg stock power or a cube, tin kidney beans, water. Method: Fry the onion, garlic and celery for 5 minutes over a medium heat.

he famous Edinburgh Fringe comedy festival begins on August 4th and if you’ve never been you may well wonder whether it is, indeed, actually funny. Having been a few times I have to say that it’s a bit like any comedic situation. Some will find it hilarious and others will find it a bit dull - it really depends on your personal sense of humour. To give you some examples - and let you see for yourself - we’ve managed to find what ‘experts’ consider the best twenty jokes told over the past ten years or so. We’ve also included the writer’s name just to shame them. See what you think! 1. “Never date a tennis player. WITHOUT DOUBT, THE BEST OPTION! LET’S HOPE HE CAN TAKE US FORWARD AGAIN
I
t has to be said that to most of us the appointment of Gary Monk represented probably the best option of the numerous names that had been bandied about since relegation. Like all incoming managers, however, he has much to prove and a lot of convincing to do before he is taken to the hearts of the ‘Boro faithful. Like me, most ‘Boro fans just want someone who takes the club to his heart, isn’t afraid to put his own stamp on proceedings and is as eager for success as the rest of us. Let’s hope that he can go on to demonstrate all those attributes. His first major decision – the release of Stewart Downing – created something of a split between those die-hard ‘Boro fans who still think of Stewie as ‘one of our own’ and those who want a complete change going forward. Looking at the decision realistically I felt the decision was a good indication that Gary was not only aware of Downing’s unconvincing performances for the majority of the season but also the obvious problems he created behind the
scenes that affected the smooth running of the club – and, some would say, accounted for the end of Aitor Karanka. Although he ‘s obviously the Academy’s most successful product to date there comes a time when you have to admit that change would be the best option for all concerned. I really do wish him well, though, and would love to see him go to somewhere like Brighton and produce some of the magic we have seen in the past. That the magic will certainly not be with ‘Boro is an excellent indication that Gary Monk has his own ideas and hopefully a short term plan that will also succeed in the long term. I, for one, am really looking forward to seeing what those ideas are and how they are implemented in the potentially interesting few weeks before the first game at Wolves on August 4th. While he’s spent some time putting his backroom staff together, the deafening silence regarding the future of Steve Agnew – combined with the aforementioned Downing release –

would suggest he is doing things his own way. But in that respect I applaud him for giving Dimi Konstantopoulos a renewed contract. Still a huge fans’ favourite for his two very special years as our number one, I still find it hard to believe Karanka didn’t give Dimi a single chance in the premiership. He deserved a lot better! At the time of writing the players haven’t even returned back for pre-season so there isn’t a great deal happening at the Riverside. By the time of the next edition, however, it is hoped that there will have been a number of comings and goings. We all know who should be in the latter category but it will be fascinating to see who will represent the former. After the second half of last season exciting days are coming back to the Riverside with a vengeance.
