In The Garden
R
egularly remove any fallen leaves from borders and lawns to prevent the spread of over wintering pests and diseases. If you have a greenhouse clear it out and give it a good clean. Remove any painted glass shading and install plastic bubble wrap for insulation. Remove any remaining summer bedding from both containers and borders and replace with plants such as pansies, bellis and wallflowers that will see you through to the spring. Pot up prepared hyacinth bulbs to have flowers at Christmas and New Year. Make sure all planted containers are raised off the ground with pot feet so that they drain well in rainy weather. Continue to plant spring flowering bulbs, except tulips, so that you have a succession of flowers. If you choose the right varieties you can have bulbs in flower from January to May. Net your pond to prevent falling leaves going in and decomposing in the water. Prune bush roses by half to prevent them rocking in very windy weather which can loosen them at their roots. Also prune climbing roses now.
Lawns Keep as many leaves off the lawn as possible to prevent them blocking out light and air and damaging the grass. This is the last chance to scarify, aerate and top dress the lawn if it was not done in September. If the weather is very wet keep off the lawn as much as possible. If the grass is still growing it is fine to carry on mowing.
Fruit and Vegetables Lift and divide old rhubarb crowns that are more than five years old. Make sure that all the divisions have two or more fat pink buds. After preparing the ground really well you can plant new fruit trees and bushes now. Prune out any diseased or dead shoots on apple and pear trees and collect any fallen fruits or dead fruits on the trees. It is important to maintain hygiene in the fruit garden to prevent the spread of diseases. Remove yellow foliage and unwanted runners from strawberry plants and also any plants that look as if they are diseased. Sow over wintering broad beans. It helps if you can cover them with fleece to stop pigeons getting at them.

Clear your old pea and bean plants by cutting off the tops to add to the compost heap. The roots can be dug back into the ground to provide extra nitrogen to the soil. Dig over any vacant areas of the vegetable garden and leave for the frost to break down the clods into finer particles.
Wildlife Always keep your bird bath clean and topped up with fresh water. If there is a very cold spell and the water is frozen over it is very important to keep the bird bath free of ice as it usually means all other water supplies will be frozen too and yours may be the only drinking water they can find. Any type of bird food can now be used as the breeding season is over. Leave a heap of leaves in a sheltered corner of the garden for hibernating mammals and insects, which will attract ground feeding birds. If you have an old ivy plant do not cut it back now as it will provide late nectar for insects.

THE BRAND NEW PEUGEOT 308 SHARP DESIGN WITH LOADS OF EXTRAS
P
eugeot have released the new version of their ever popular 308 series with the announcement that ‘it is better than ever with an updated design, superior technology, and ultra-efficient engines.’ They go on to say that ‘ sharp design is in our DNA and both externally and internally the new 308 has been meticulously developed.’ At first glance you would kind of agree with them as the new car is totally different to the rather ordinary styling of the original model. Featuring a re-profiled front bumper, new bonnet shaping and a re-designed radiator grille that inevitably features the iconic Peugeot lion, the new, fresh styling is an attractive proposition. To further add to the classy design there is also a new LED headlight arrangement. Internally, the car features Peugeot’s new i-cockpit concept which allows greater connection to the road thanks to the compact multi-function steering wheel that gives a heightened sense of agility. There is also a highly visible instrument panel that places key information closer to the road
and a generous 9.7” touch screen. And given that the choice is wide, with a selection of five door hatchbacks and an estate, there should really be something to suit most family requirements. It really is brand new right from the new EMP2 platform upwards with a range of new Euro compliant ‘BlueHDi’ engines providing amazing economy. The most cost effective, in fact, offers around 80mpg and excellent hybrid-beating CO2 emissions, both of which make it one of the most efficient and economic cars in its class. The platform itself is 70kg lighter than its predecessor, as is the body with greater use of high strength steels, better joining arrangements and the use of aluminium and thermoplastic for various panels. Passenger space isn’t as good as some rivals in the rear because Peugeot has given the 308 a bigger boot than most of the rest. Equipment is generous, with every car apart from the base model featuring sat-nav, while top models boast things like massage seats as standard kit – items normally associated with higher premium cars.

On the equipment front, in fact, there are five different 308 trims but only one bespoke level for the 308 GTi. The entry-level provides steel wheels, LED day-running-lights, air conditioning, cruise control, DAB radio, and Bluetooth and USB connectivity as standard, while going up to Active adds 16in alloy wheels, rear parking sensors, dual-zone climate control, automatic lights and wipers, and Peugeot’s 9.7in touch screen infotainment system complete with sat nav. Upgrading to the Allure trim adds parking sensors at the front, LED headlights, electrically folding mirrors and an electronic parking brake, while the GT Line models add scrolling indicators, 18in alloy wheels, LED front fog lights, darkened glass and a reversing camera. The range-topping GT-trimmed 308 comes with a sculpted body kit, lowered suspension, keyless entry and go plus numerous autonomous safety technologies.
Prices start at around £15,600 but rise steeply to over £26,000 for the 2.0BlueHTE GTI. The price range is progressive, however, so you can buy according to both your requirements and your budget. Whatever you decide, however, this is a quality car that the family will love and will give you enjoyable, comfortable driving with more comprehensive safety features, a more desirable look and greater efficiency at a price that suits you.

Recipe Ingredients: Pastry: Buy a pre-made pastry case or a pack of ready-made shortcrust pastry. 450g pumpkin or butternut squash, 2 eggs, 3oz brown sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, ½ teaspoon nutmeg, ½ teaspoon ginger, ½ teaspoon allspice/10 fluid oz of evaporated milk
Method: Peel the pumpkin or butternut squash and cut into chunks. Steam it until tender or cook it in the oven for 20-30 minutes on gas mark 6/200C. Squeeze the water out using a sieve or through thin cotton muslin. Mash the pumpkin until like a puree. Mix all the other ingredients well in a bowl and add the pumpkin. Roll out the pastry and line a flan tin (if you only have smaller ones, do two). Pour in the pumpkin filling into the tart tin and cook on gas mark 4/180C for 45 minutes. Test with a knife to see that the filling has set. Let it cool and serve cold with low fat crème fraiche or yoghurt rather than fattening cream. Tip: If using ready-made pastry, roll it out thinner so that the pie will have less calories.

There are certain things in life which although a little disturbing - can still be the basis for an ironic kind of humour. Here are a few great examples..... This morning I was sitting on a park bench next to a homeless man and I asked him how he ended up this way. He said, “Up until last week I still had it all. A cook who cooked my meals, my room was cleaned, my clothes were washed and pressed, I had a roof over my head, I had TV, internet, I went to the gym regularly, the pool, the library, I could still go to school.” I asked, “What happened then? Was it Drugs? or Alcohol? Divorce?“ “Oh no, nothing like that,” he said. “I got out of prison.” Everyone claims to remember where they were when they heard of President Kennedy’s assassination. I certainly do. I was sitting at home watching BBC News! A man had just settled into his seat next to the window on the plane when another man sat down in the aisle seat and put his black Labrador Retriever in the middle seat next to the man. The first man looked very quizzically at the dog and asked why the dog was allowed on the plane. The second man explained that he was from the Drugs Enforcement Agency (DEA) and that the dog was a ‘sniffing dog’. ‘His name is Sniffer and he’s the best there is. I’ll show you once we get airborne, when I put him to work.’ The plane took off, and once it had levelled out, the DEA Agent said, ‘Watch this.’ He told Sniffer to ‘search’. Sniffer jumped down, walked along the aisle, and finally sat very purposefully next to a woman for several seconds. Sniffer then returned to his seat and put one paw on the Agent’s arm. The Agent said, ‘Good boy’, and he turned to the man and said, ‘That woman is in possession of marijuana, I’m making a
note of her seat number and the authorities will apprehend her when we land.’ ‘Gee, that’s pretty good,’ replied the first man. Once again, the Agent sent Sniffer to search the aisles. The Lab sniffed about, sat down beside a man for a few seconds, returned to its seat, and this time he placed two paws on the Agent’s arm. The Agent said, ‘That man is carrying cocaine, so again, I’m making a note of his seat number for the authorities.’ ‘I like it!’ said his seat mate. The Agent then told Sniffer to ‘search’ again. Sniffer walked up and down the aisles for a little while, sat down for a moment, and then came racing back to the Agent, jumped into the middle seat and proceeded to empty his bowels all over the seat. The first man was really disgusted by this behaviour and couldn’t figure out how or why a well-trained dog would behave like that, so he asked the Agent, ‘What’s going on?’ The Agent nervously replied, ‘He’s just found a bomb. An old man walked into a chemist and asked for a bottle of methylated spirits. The girl at the counter said ‘No way. You’re that drunk that sits in the park drinking cider and getting drunk every day. You’re going to take it to the park and drink it.’ ‘Now isn’t that just typical,’ said the old man. You make a mistake in life and people judge you for it forever. I’ve given all that up and have taken up my old career as a painter and decorator. The meths is to wash my brushes with. You people are too judgemental!’ The girl immediately felt very guilty for her obvious misconception and - apologising profusely - handed the man his bottle. ‘Oh,’ he said, ‘haven’t you got a cold one?’

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR MAKES!

o back a year, and losing a goal in the second minute against QPR and losing one in the 85th minute at Fulham would undoubtedly have led to two defeats and no points. Fast forward twelve months and things were completely different with the equaliser at Fulham vitally important for much more than the point it brought. This is a squad of players that simply doesn’t know the meaning of capitulation and if you had to sum up what Garry Monk has given us in one word it has to be ‘excitement.’ When that rather ludicrous second goal went in against QPR early in the second half there was none of the resigned communal sighs that would have greeted such an incident under Karanka. Because while he would have continued in the same vein with a complete lack of forward movement or any kind of pro-active change in personnel, this set of players simply shrugged the setback aside and went in search of both an equaliser and ultimately a winner. The same applied at Fulham where the draw almost felt like a victory after coming back so late to equalise. Had Ashley Fletcher managed to get a touch on the ball in the last minute, in fact, it could easily have been
another three points. I said last month that one very positive sign of Garry Monk’s excellent recruitment was the Carabao Cup result and the performance against Scunthorpe in which the team - showing ten changes from the one that had been used over the first four games - comfortably won with some great movement and three excellent goals. Exactly the same can be said about the ten changes made at Aston Villa and the very comfortable nature of the win demonstrated just as strongly how deep the quality of this squad really is. Once again, Monk showed he has no compunctions about blooding young players and the performances of both Lewis Wing and Marcus Tavernier on that night is an indication that the future is looking good. Perhaps the only disappointment of the last four weeks was the red card for Adama Traore after a sensational performance against Bolton in which he demonstrated his understanding of Garry Monk’s instructions to get up the wing and look for Britt Assombalonga. The two crosses for his goals suggested that Traore had at last come of age, but the very silly sliding tackle when there was simply no threat to our goal showed he still has much to learn. He’s

still wonderfully exciting when he storms forward, though, and having completed his three match ban we are now - at the time of writing - looking forward to two home games in the space of four days. If he’s picked for either or both of them he could well carry on as he did at Bolton. Six points in those two games (Norwich and Brentford) and we could easily be challenging Leeds, Cardiff and Ipswich for an automatic promotion place. There’s still a long way to go, of course, but it’s quite a while since we were able to arrive at the Riverside with so much anticipation and - I say it again - excitement. And with the unbeaten run stretching to seven games at Fulham there is also a degree of that longed for attribute consistency. It still has to be said, however, that we have yet to show the really dynamic performances of which this team is definitely capable but picking up points when there is so obviously a lot more to come is a great sign. Long may it all continue!
