Is Your Conservatory TOO HOT TOO COLD In The Summer?
Why invest in a New Home Conservatory Roof? We are approximately 75% cheaper (better priced) than replacing your existing roof. HOW? 1. We insulate and improve the energy efficiency of your conservatory ceiling from the inside of your conservatory. 2. We do not replace your existing conservatory roof. Our Solution: We use an interior lightweight guaranteed insulated system that will keep your conservatory COOL in the Summer and
In The Winter?
WARM in the Winter. This guaranteed installation is carried out in 1 day with the minimum of disruption to you. We only insulate the interior conservatory ceiling and transform your conservatory into a living space that can be used by you to enjoy 365 days a year - even when the sun is shining for hours or heavy snow is on the ground. There is no change to the external appearance of your conservatory roof. How many times during the winter period have you wasted
energy and money by allowing the heat from a radiator or electric fan to escape through the conservatory roof? Why are you wasting expensive heating? WE HAVE THE SOLUTION Compare our price to a new conservatory roof - taking up to 3/4 days to complete with all the household disruption and noise that occurs. Your garden is affected by all the work being carried out. For further information, telephone 07979 867550 or 01642 386009.

In The Garden
I
t’s a good idea to keep a close eye on the weather during April. Frosts are still common, and many plants and flowers may need protection in the form of fleece or cloches. Hopefully, the ground will not be too wet and so now is a good time to finish off digging over your plot in preparation for all the vegetables you are going to grow. As the weather gets warmer, the weeds will grow in earnest. Regular weeding, before they become established, is important. Vegetable Garden To Do’s Start an asparagus bed - Early April is not too late to start an asparagus bed. Make sure the ground is prepared ready for the arrival of the asparagus crowns as you will need to plant them shortly after they arrive. The crowns must not be allowed to dry out. For this reason, don’t buy them from a garden centre where they have been kept on a shelf for several weeks. Earth up first early potatoes and plant out second early and maincrop varieties Protect first early potato shoots against frost by earthing up as they break through the soil. Second earlies and maincrop seed potatoes can now be planted. Chitting the seed potatoes beforehand may improve yields, but is not essential. Keep on top of weeding - It is much easier to deal with weeds whilst they are small.
Pick them out by hand or use a trowel or hoe. Doing this regularly will mean a weed free plot, and nowhere for pests (especially slugs) to hide. Put up bean supports - Put in place wigwams or rows of canes ready for your runner and climbing french beans. As the ground is soft, it will be easy to push the canes into the soil. Sow vegetable seed outdoors - Many seeds won’t germinate until the soil temperature has reached about 7ºC, but if the weather has been warm you can start sowing carrots, broad beans, parsnips, spinach, beetroot, peas, mangetout, lettuce, radish, scorzonera, swiss chard, rocket, runner beans, salsify, sorrel, sprouting broccoli, swede, and turnips. Sow vegetable seed indoors in trays or pots - Start sowing indoors, or in a greenhouse or coldframe, celeriac, kale, parsley, leeks, brussel sprouts, summer cabbage, cauliflower, lemon grass, comfrey, calabrese, peas, mangetout, squash and pumpkins. Towards the end of the month start sowing sweetcorn, cucumber, courgette, french and runner beans, ready for planting out mid May. If you have a greenhouse that they can grow in then you are not too late to start chillies. Plant onion and shallot sets - If you have space, now is the time to plant onion sets. White onions are relatively cheap in the
PAGE 14 | Please mention ‘The Local Answer Ingleby Barwick’ when calling advertisers
See Page 30 for our Index of Advertisers shops but red onions and shallots are much more expensive, so it’s worth thinking about growing these. Harden off plants - Seedlings that have been started indoors but are to be grown outside can be hardened off on warm still days. Place them outside during the day, but take them in again late afternoon, and do this for about a week or so. This way they will get used to the cooler conditions before being planted outside. Protect plants from frost - If a frost has been forecast, protect plants using horticultural fleece or cloches. Divide herbaceous herbs - Herbaceous herbs, such as chive, oregano, mint and tarragon can be dug up and divided, just before proper growth begins. Divide the root clump, re-plant and water well. Fruit Garden To Do’s Clean up your strawberry beds or pots Remove any dead or damaged leaves and old runners from the plants. If the plants are getting older, thin out the smaller crowns leaving 3 to 4 crowns per plant. Apply a fresh layer of straw if using as a mulch. Apply a mulch to soft fruits - All soft fruits, such as strawberries, raspberries, redcurrants, blackcurrants, and gooseberries will benefit from a mulch. Garden compost, leaf mould, organic manure, straw, hay and spent mushroom compost can all be used. Hay is more beneficial than straw as it breaks down more easily and releases more nutrients into the soil. Apply an acidic mulch to blueberries and cranberries - These are acid loving plants, so mulch with an 8cm (3in) layer of acidic material such as bark or old pine needles (kept from your christmas tree!). Prune stone fruit trees - To avoid risk of infection, stone fruits, such as plum, cherry, peach, nectarine and apricot should only be pruned during the growing season. Prune late April, when the plants are in leaf and after flowering. Immediately seal all cuts greater than 1cm (½in) with wound paint.

Motoring
ATTRACTIVE, ECONOMICAL AND GREAT TO DRIVE THE NEW SUZUKI SWIFT IS WELL WORTH A LOOK! The Suzuki Swift has been a popular feature on Britain’s roads since 2005 so the upgraded version now released by the Japanese manufacturer has been greeted with pleasure by the car’s enthusiasts. Since day one the Swift has had a strong appeal to those who want good value for money and this new version has been designed to give even better value with improved internal space, more generous levels of standard equipment and a good choice of engine sizes. While shorter and lower than its predecessor, the new version is also wider and because its wheels are pushed further into the corners of the car’s interior, space is freed up. Both factors give a much more comfortable and roomy ride than was previously experienced especially since there’s also plenty of headroom for the taller passenger. Rear legroom has been improved, but as with previous versions you can certainly get three people in the rear seats though it then becomes a bit squashed. Even the Swift’s boot has been improved and is now 25 per cent larger than the old Swift’s. It’s still the smallest in its class, however, and
won’t necessarily accommodate all your travel luggage. It should be good enough for the week’s shop though! Suzuki have dropped the three door version of this car so your only option is the much more convenient and preferable five door. Choice of engine reflects the relatively small size of the car, with a choice of a 1.0-litre equipped with a turbocharger or a 1.2.-litre that needs high revving to achieve the desired speed. You could also opt to have a hybrid system known as SHVS (that’s Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki) with either engine which gives a stop/start system that makes the process very smooth indeed. It also helps initial acceleration. You would expect that a small car like this should excel in an urban environment and in that respect the new Swift will not be found wanting. Forward visibility and immediate control are excellent, while the controls are both responsive and accurate. Add to that the lightness of the car and you have a vehicle that is agile and responsive. Suzuki have also fitted a reversing camera to all but the entry-level car to aid rear visibility. To complete the engines’ full potential the
PAGE 18 | Please mention ‘The Local Answer Ingleby Barwick’ when calling advertisers
See Page 30 for our Index of Advertisers optional six-speed automatic gearbox will make them smooth and responsive. If you want the four-wheel-drive system for a bit more assurance over the winter months it can only be ordered with the 1.2-litre engine. As far as standard extras are concerned, the Swift’s upgraded 7-inch touch screen system (standard on all but the base model) might look a little basic but is actually fairly intuitive to use, helped by the inclusion of Apple Car Play and Android Auto smart phone integration. All Swifts come with six airbags and an electronic stability programme that cuts in if the car begins to skid. Upgrading to top-spec SZ5 adds a camera and various sensors for lane departure warning and autonomous emergency braking. The latter, which warns the driver of a potential front-into-rear impact and can apply the brakes to avoid it, is impressive for the fact it works up to 62mph rather than only at town speeds like in many other small cars.
The aforementioned reversing camera that’s standard on mid- and top-spec models is another useful safety feature that is usually only available as an optional extra. Even entry level SZ3 Swifts are well equipped, with DAB radio, Bluetooth connectivity, airconditioning and a leather steering wheel, although you are limited to the SZ-T version If you want 16-inch alloy wheels rather than the standard 15-inch steel items. Economy-wise, official Suzuki figures suggest you’ll achieve something in the region of 65.7mpg, but as with most manufacturer’s estimates that may not be achievable, even if a more realistic 50-55mpg certainly is. Purchase price, though at the time of writing this has still to be confirmed, should start at around £11,999. At the moment there is no Sport version available but this is promised sometime this year. In the meantime, you’ll have to make do with the 1.0-litre SHVS which is a fantastic little car from a highly regarded company.

Football
THERE’S AN EXCITING APRIL AHEAD!
W
hile it’s great that ‘Boro have finally found a degree of consistency with the recent unbeaten run of four wins and two draws easily representing the best spell of the season, there must still be reservations about the team’s ability to compete against the top sides. The four wins (Hull, Leeds, Birmingham and Barnsley) and one of the draws (Sunderland) were all against teams well below us in the table. That we struggled at Brentford - a team much closer to us in the league than the rest - and finished the game relieved not to have lost is evidence enough that we still can’t be too confident against the top six or seven. So the real test of our new found consistency will surely be the last seven fixtures starting with the Good Friday visit of Wolves to the Riverside. Their exceptional season finds them in a position of real strength and with only eight games left and already thirteen points clear of third place they must surely be guaranteed Premier League football next season. Cardiff’s recent six match winning streak has also put them in pole position given that Aston Villa have slipped up of late. Looking at the performances of the other teams above us, in fact, shows that with the exception of Fulham, ‘Boro’s current form is easily the best of the rest and that needs to continue.
How we cope with Wolves on Good Friday will surely be a great indicator of whether we have actually discovered the Pulis way of achieving success, especially when we follow that with a hectic six match April programme. Those fixtures include games against teams around us like Derby (away), Sheffield United (away) and Bristol City (home) so we really have to start competing better against our real play-off rivals. It’s going to be an exciting last few weeks, though, and for that we have to thank the organisation and commitment that Tony Pulis has brought to the club since his arrival. Amazingly, he still has his detractors on both radio phone-ins and social media from ‘fans’ who it seems will only be satisfied when we can attract Pep Guardiola and Lionel Messi to the Riverside. As a ‘Boro supporter of many, many years, however, I - like the majority of real fans - have learned how to have more realistic ambitions. Attracting major sponsorship and top players to what the outside world perceives as the cold, unfashionable North East has always been extremely difficult and shows what an amazing job Bryan Robson did to attract the sensational talent he did. The current wealth of the Premiership and the world wide coverage of the top six has only made it even more difficult because

even Newcastle, with their amazing support week after week, will never be as attractive for prospective investors as the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Spurs and even Arsenal. Perhaps much of that is because of the fawning attitude towards them of the media in general and BBC in particular that suggests the rest are only there to make up the numbers. That’s why Leicester City’s performance in winning the Premiership was probably the greatest sporting achievement and the biggest sporting shock of the last hundred years. So, let’s all just hope that ‘Boro’s recent form can continue until the end of the season and that we can once again look forward to the most exciting lottery of the lot - the play-offs. We know after Norwich two years ago that absolutely anything can happen and that Wembley hasn’t exactly been a successful venue for us in the past but you simply never know. Let’s just hope we can get there and re-write the record books!
