lant or divide snowdrops while they are still in the green. Deadhead pansies and other winter bedding on a regular basis so that they carry on well into the spring. Start gladioli corms and dahlia tubers off by placing them in trays in a light, warm place. Remove dead leaves from alpines and top dress with grit or gravel. Plan your summer containers and bedding and buy plug plants to grow on in the greenhouse. Slug killer should be added to the garden where you know hostas, delphiniums and lilies will soon be appearing. The best day to do this is Valentines day as it is the right time and the easiest date to remember. Sow hardy annuals in pots or trays if you didn’t do this last autumn. Wisteria should be pruned by cutting back the sideshoots to two or three buds. Cut back group 3 clematis down to the lowest pair of strong buds and then feed and mulch. At the end of the month top dress beds and borders with a fertiliser such a fish, blood and bone or Growmore.
Lawns Turf can be laid if the ground is not frozen or really wet and then keep off of it for several weeks. If the conditions allow, you Page 14
can prepare the seed bed for making a new lawn in the spring. As moles will be starting to mate this month watch out for increased activity and get rid of any mole hills that appear on the lawn. As the soil pushed up is so fine use it for seed sowing. If you have noticed moss or algae on the lawn it means you have drainage problems. Make a note to improve drainage at a later date.
Fruit and Vegetables Prune autumn raspberries, taking the old canes down to the ground and if summer fruiting raspberries are growing too tall for their support they can also be pruned. Plant new fruit trees and bushes and bare rooted cane fruits. If you have peaches, nectarines or apricots with early flowers you can protect them from frost with fleece. Apply a general fertilizer to all your fruit using the rate given on the packet. Now is a good time to mulch all the fruit beds with garden compost or well rotted manure. Once you have an area of the garden or allotment prepared for seedbeds cover them with fleece, clear polythene or cloches to warm up the soil prior to sowing. HUGE NEW CAR ANTICIPATION FOR 2017
I
t seems that as year follows year more and more exciting cars are launched and competition among the big players in the industry is becoming increasingly stronger. Great new cars to look forward to in 2017, for instance, include the BMW 3 Series, Audi A6, Nissan Micra, Ford Fiesta and much more. The great thing is that the numerous new models scheduled to come on to the market this year literally cater for everyone, ranging as they do from standard family hatchbacks to exceptionally designed and unbelievably exciting sports cars. We can all therefore anticipate an action-packed year ahead. Here are just a few of the big new launches we can look forward to....

The car will have an apparently lightweight construction and the four-cylinder unit’s modest 250bhp will work with the light shell to take the new model from 0-62mph in 4.5 seconds. Cosmetically, the car’s sculptured sides mould into lateral narrowing shapes that give the illusion of an elongated tail. Internally, a combination of leather, fabric, carbon fibre and aluminium give a beautifully modern design that nevertheless harkens back to the best styling of the sixties’ A110. ASTON MARTIN V8 VANTAGE At the highest end of the price range featured here, the Vantage will start at around £90,000 and will be on sale from around Autumn this year. It represents the latest move in Aston Martin’s continuing range upgrades and comes hot on the heels of the new V12-engined DB11, but power will come courtesy of Mercedes because the newcomer features the same 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 as the AMG GT. The V8 Vantage will get a manual gearbox, too. As before, there will be a Vantage Roadster to follow. Space prevents us from outlining all the other fabulous additions to the motoring world during the next twelve months but over that time we will be testing many of the more appropriate launches and giving you the most important facts when it comes to choosing your own prospective purchases. It was doubly mystifying in view of the fact that less than a week earlier Watford fans had come out in defence of the ‘Boro support following a totally unjustified statement from Watford Mayor Dorothy Thornhill claiming they had been disrespectful during Graham Taylor’s tribute. Social media users were quick to point out that the travelling Boro supporters had shown huge respect for the former England manager with one Watford fan writing: “Please ensure your fans know how grateful we were on Saturday. This women does not represent our great town and club, she is so out of touch it’s unreal. Thanks again for your amazing support.” That’s not the first time this year that ‘Boro fans have been singled out for praise from both opposing clubs and the media alike, and they are enjoying a thoroughly deserved and growing reputation for both their good behaviour and their excellent support. So after all that - and once again after an afternoon in which the Red Faction never ceased their noisy support even after we Page 36
went behind, Aitor chose to criticise the chant ‘Attack, attack, attack,’ suggesting it was the catalyst for ‘Boro to start throwing long balls forward and abandon his own preferred formation. Do we need to point out it hadn’t really worked up to that point and besides, he’d just put two extra strikers onto the field. What were they supposed to chant, ‘Defend, defend, defend? I’ve never heard that done in my sixty odd years of watching football! So what happens now? On the premise that you should never bite the hand that feeds you it’s going to be very difficult for Aitor to resurrect the strong backing he’s had up to now from the crowd. Constantly thrusting it down everybody’s throat that when he arrived we were nearer the first division of the Championship than the Premier League isn’t going to help him either. We are aware he’s done a great job so far but many still believe that had he shown a bit more flexibility things could have been so much better. For instance, a little more adventure at home against the likes of Watford, Crystal Palace and Leicester could have seen us out of sight of the bottom three by now. His stubbornness has certainly cost the club money because his treatment of Jordan Rhodes, Stewart Downing and Daniel Ayala has not only left a bad taste in the February 2017 | The Local Answer Magazine

mouth, but has, without doubt, reduced the trio’s perceived worth in the transfer market considerably. And while we’re on the subject of the transfer market, what on earth has happened to make it look likely that we’re also about to lose our most positive attacking force of the season with Gaston Ramirez apparently set to leave? The only really good news in a pretty dismal month - though let’s be honest it wasn’t really news - was that Chinese interest in the club has been dismissed with the categorical statement ‘Middlesbrough Football Club is not for sale.’ With the owner/ Chairman we’ve got that definitely goes without saying. Steve Gibson is a ‘Boro legend and long may he remain so! Never mind, at the time of writing we’ve still got the fifth round draw for the FA Cup to look forward to providing we can avoid another embarrassment at the hands of Accrington Stanley on Saturday. (Accrington Stanley, who’s Accrington Stanley? ..... Exactly!)
