In The Garden

April Gardening Tips

C

ut back perennials and ornamental grasses to make way for new growth. Plant summer flowering bulbs in well prepared soil. If you have wet soil place a layer of grit in the bottom of the planting hole. Enliven your garden with some new varieties of herbaceous perennials such as hardy geraniums, heuchera, poppies etc. Have a continuous supply of flowers for cutting and bringing indoors by either planting suitable perennials such as lupins and delphiniums or by sowing annuals such as cosmos, gypsophila, nicotiana, helichrysum, etc. Pot up canna rhizomes in a warm, light position to flower in the summer. This is the best month for planting new roses but never plant a new rose in soil that has grown a rose previously as the new one will suffer from rose transplant sickness. If you must have a rose in a particular place then you will have to change the soil at least 3ft all around the planting hole and 3ft deep. Much easier to find a new home. Prune established bush and standard roses and add a rose fertiliser around the base of the plant. Prune summer flowering shrubs such as buddleia, lavatera, hardy fuchsia and

perovskia. Remove any plain green stems from variegated shrubs otherwise they will eventually revert to all green. Cut off the heads only of daffodils that have finished flowering. Leave all the foliage in place for at least six weeks so that the bulb can renew its energy for flowering next year.

Lawns Check that your mower is in good working order. Raise the mowing height for the first cut of the season. New lawns can be made using turf but it is best to wait until late in the month or even into April before sowing grass seed. Towards the end of the month feed the lawn with a high nitrogen fertilizer.

Fruit and Vegetables If you didn’t prune your autumn fruiting raspberries, gooseberries or blueberries there is still time to do it now. Mulch all fruit with your own compost or well rotted farm manure but make sure it does not actually touch the stems of each plant as this can cause them to rot. Place cloches or fleece over strawberry plants to bring them on for an earlier crop. Remove the forcing cover on rhubarb.

LOCAL ANSWER If the weather is suitable you can sow beetroot, broad beans, carrots, leeks, lettuce and other salad leaves, onions, parsnips, peas, radish, spinach and summer cabbage and cauliflowers. Make sure the ground is friable and sow to the depth shown on the packets.

S O B N I G

LANDSCAPES DRIVEWAY & PATIO SPECIALIST

If you have a frost free greenhouse you can sow aubergines, cucumbers, peppers and tomatoes. Plant onion sets, shallots and garlic. At the end of the month plant early chitted potatoes and put maincrop potatoes in trays or boxes to chit. Any vegetables still left from winter will need feeding with Growmore or any balanced fertiliser. Regularly hoe vegetable beds so that weeds are not taking any available moisture or nutrients.

Wildlife

Buy nesting boxes to attract birds to your garden. Hang them on a wall rather than from trees if you have cats coming into your garden. Carry on putting food out for birds but make sure there are now no large pieces of food in case the mother bird feeds it to fledglings. If your wildlife pond does not have any frogspawn try to get some from another pond that has plenty. Keep the bird bath topped up with water.

HYUNDAI ‘S NEW i20 - A REAL COMPETITOR IN THE SUPER-MINI CLASS

T

his new version of the i20 is continued proof of Hyundai’s recent development, with quality and value important indications of the company’s attempts to dominate the super-mini class. You might be surprised to learn that the number one reason given for buying a Hyundai is styling, but over the past five years it has progressively renewed its model range, adding design flair and sophistication to the reliability already enjoyed by owners of the earlier models.

though, because the new i20 is indeed a bigger car than both previous models and many of its competitors. The increased dimensions give it a more comfortable and spacious interior and also a boot that is bigger than average.

The only items of significance to have been carried over from the old car, in fact, are the engines. Externally the new i20 incorporates a touch of individuality that its predecessor lacked, with gloss black rear window pillars overcoming the accusations of blandness aimed at the previous design. The range starts with a 1.2-litre petrol engine with either 74bhp or 83bhp and a The interior also impresses, with a level of five-speed manual gearbox, plus there’s a finish to its dashboard worthy of a bigger, more expensive car. That’s fairly appropriate, 99bhp 1.4 petrol that available with either PAGE 14 | Please mention ‘The Local Answer Ingleby Barwick’ when calling advertisers

LOCAL ANSWER a six-speed manual gearbox or four-speed automatic.. The diesel line-up, meanwhile, includes a 74bhp three-cylinder 1.1 and a 89bhp four-cylinder 1.4, with the 1.1 available in both standard form and as a more efficient (and expensive) ‘Blue’ model. This features a stop-start system and narrower tyres to improve emissions and average fuel consumption from 103g/km and 70.6mpg to 84g/km and 88.3mpg. The clever work of the Hyundai designers is immediately obvious when the engine is switched on because it is so quiet you can barely tell it’s running. Once you set off, though, the standard six-speed gearbox is smoother than before. Safety has also improved with high-strength steels making up a large proportion of the new body shell, creating extra rigidity. There’s also improved grip and a noticeable tightening of the steering performance, while the notorious speed bumps that have become a plague of almost every suburban street are now well absorbed. Price-wise, the range starts at £10,640 for the 1.2 S, while another £750 adds airconditioning to a reasonably generous entry-level specification that includes electric front windows, a driver’s seat height adjuster, a reach and height adjustable steering wheel and hill-start assist. Hyundai expects the next trim level up, called SE, to be the best seller, however, because it brings Bluetooth, alloy wheels,

more speakers, rear electric windows, cruise control, a lane departure warning system, rear parking sensors, iPod connectivity and leather finishes to the steering wheel and gearlever knob. The dashboard is soft to the touch and available with an appealing two-tone finish. The top of the dash also features a mounting that allows you to harness your smart-phone’s navigation. Economically, an impressive 70mpg is anticipated, while CO2 Emissions show 104g/km, putting it into VED Band B (£0 first year, £20 thereafter). That’s well in keeping with its competitors and makes it a cheap car to run. So, this quiet, roomy and well finished example rides and handles well, is economic to run, very stylish to look at and is an ideal family car that is already considered one of the best cars in its class. It’s certainly worth a look!

It was a very hot day and The Lone Ranger and Tonto walked into a saloon and sat down to drink a beer. After a few minutes, a big tall cowboy walked in and said “Who owns the big white horse outside?”

The Lone Ranger stands again, and claims, “I do, what’s wrong with him this time?” “Nothing, but you left your injun runnin!”

The Lone Ranger stood up, hitched his gun belt, and said, “I do....Why?” The cowboy looked at the Lone Ranger and said, “I just thought you’d like to know that your horse is about dead outside!”

LOCAL ANSWER Everyone seems to be in such a hurry to scream ‘racism’ these days. A customer in the supermarket asked, “In what aisle could I find the Irish sausage?” The assistant asks, “Are you Irish?” The guy, clearly offended, says, “Yes I am. But let me ask you something. If I had asked for Italian sausage, would you ask me if I was Italian? Or if I had asked for German Bratwurst, would you ask me if I was German? Or if I asked for a kosher hot dog would you ask me if I was Jewish? Or if I had asked for a Taco, would you ask if I was Mexican? Or if I asked for Polish sausage, would you ask if I was Polish?” The assistant says, “No, I probably wouldn’t.” The guy says, “Well then, just because I asked for Irish sausage, why did you ask me if I’m Irish?” The assistant replied, “Because you’re in Halfords.” Harry was really keen to get married but no matter which girl he took home his mother simply didn’t approve. His friend suggested that he should find a girl who was just like his mother and that would solve the problem. When he finally found a girl who looked like his mother, dressed like his mother and talked like his mother he took her home to introduce her to his parents. Next day his friend asked how it went. ‘Not good,’ said Harry. ‘My father hated her.’

A drunk staggers to the toilet in a large restaurant. On his way back he stops at a table and asks a young lady if he stood on her foot on his way out. ‘Yes, you did,’ she said angrily. ‘Oh good,’ said the drunk. I knew my table was around here somewhere.’ Dorothy and Edna, two “senior” widows, are talking. Dorothy said: “That nice George Johnson asked me out for a date. I know you went out with him last week, and I wanted to talk with you about him before I give him my answer.” Edna: “Well, I’ll tell you. He shows up at my apartment punctually at 7 P.M., dressed like such a gentleman in a fine suit, and he brings me such beautiful flowers! Then he takes me downstairs, and what’s there but a luxury car... A limousine, uniformed chauffeur and all. Then he takes me out for dinner... A marvellous dinner... Lobster, champagne, dessert, and after-dinner drinks. Then we go see a show. Let me tell you, Dorothy, I enjoyed it so much I could have just died from pleasure! So then we are coming back to my apartment and he turns into an ANIMAL. Completely crazy, he tears off my expensive new dress and has his way with me two times!” Dorothy: “Goodness gracious!... So you are telling me I shouldn’t go out with him?” Edna: “No, no, no... I’m just saying, wear an old dress.” Est. 2003

LONG LOST ANTIQUE TREASURES MAKE FOR QUALITY TV

I

t has to be a testament to the popularity of the numerous antique based programmes shown on BBC that firstly there are so many of them and secondly their constant repeats still attract as many viewers as the originals. I have to confess to totally understanding that concept because I simply can’t get enough of them. From the beginnings of the ‘Antiques Road Show’ - with the wonderful Arthur Negus -to the modernday version where would-be antiques entrepreneurs queue for hours to present their potential treasures to the experts I have watched with unbridled fascination to see whether a long lost artefact can be unearthed. Even John Sullivan - who lived for years on his wonderful creation Del Boy Trotter couldn’t resist the temptation to ultimately allow Del and Rodney to discover the long-lost John Harrison ‘Lesser Watch,’ a maritime timepiece whose existence had never been totally accepted by experts world-wide but finally attracted a bid at Sotheby’s of £6.2 million. The old dream of winning the pools has definitely been superseded by such a scenario. On my days off I always insist on having

lunch at 12.15pm so I can enjoy the wonderful Tim Wannacott take two teams of enthusiasts through the ‘Bargain Hunt’ experience of buying three items and subsequently having them auctioned to see who makes the biggest profit - or, as frequently happens - the smallest loss! I have to admit yelling at the telly when someone spends a ludicrously large amount that they could never hope to recover. Better to spend small and hope for a similarly small profit, even though the dream is always that it will be something a bit special that even the ‘antique dealer’ (they mostly look like dodgy house clearance people to me) didn’t recognise. Perhaps the most surprising thing about all these variations of the original ‘Road-show’ is that despite all the publicity surrounding the antiques industry there are still a variety of treasures being unearthed every single day. At this point I have to confess a little disappointment for my own children that no matter how hard they scour my house once I go to the great antiques shop in the sky they won’t find a single genuinely historical thing (unless, of course, they look in my wardrobe but in that instance age

LOCAL ANSWER will certainly not translate to value). Perhaps the nicest aspect of the antiques industry is that it is genuinely timeless. For every year that man exists on this planet there are an abundance of antiques being created for future generations. In fifty years time, for instance, a classical Chippendale sideboard could well stand alongside a set of 1960s plastic chairs where both will be described as ‘genuine antiques. ‘ Looking back, I regret not looking after my ‘Baco’ building set and all my ‘Meccano’ sets and their boxes because I’m pretty certain they would be worth a fair amount these days. But let’s be honest, as with everything that many people take very seriously indeed there’s always a lighter side. How many times have we seen people on the Road Show expressing their feelings that ‘regardless of price it belonged to my mother/father/grandmother etc so regardless of the value I would never

sell it!’ Rubbish! We secretly believe that once they’ve been told the item is worth thousands they can’t wait to get it down to Sotheby’s so they can pay for their next trip to the Maldives. I personally couldn’t help admiring the guy who presented his late father’s lifelong collection of military models to be told they were worth around £10,000. His utterly refreshing and honest response was ‘Thanks, Dad - a new car at last!’ Absolutely brilliant!

Football

IF WE DIDN’T HAVE BAD LUCK WE WOULDN’T HAVE ANY!

I

t would appear that the Gods of football have very mixed feelings about where they want Middlesbrough FC to be. They certainly don’t want us at Wembley because having already presented us with away cup matches against league champions Manchester City, runners up Liverpool and Cup holders Arsenal this season they would then have us visit Manchester United in the FA Cup quarter finals. That was never going to happen, of course, given the football lesson we received at the hands of Arsenal but if I was being charitable towards the aforementioned football Gods I would have said they wanted us out of the cup so we could concentrate on getting us back into the Premiership. Why then, do they decree that every goalkeeper who comes to the Riverside is destined to play the game of his life while our own Tomas Mejias is given

the onerous duty of presenting the opposition with a goal and a victory they simply didn’t deserve. As usual with the necessity for early deadlines this is being written with important games still in the offing but on the Sunday night following the Leeds defeat I am still in a state of shock that we actually failed to get anything from a game we completely dominated. No fewer than 28 shots on goal and eighteen corners were compiled by ‘Boro yet we were unable to get past yet another fantastic goalkeeping performance. That we have Bolton to come to the Riverside on Tuesday is the perfect opportunity to regroup and continue our tremendous season but you really do have to wonder after the unbelievably bad refereeing performance at Birmingham and the Leeds disappointment whether we have done something to upset the powers that decree how any good

luck that is made available is actually distributed. At the moment I can’t remember much of it coming in our direction. But, as I’ve said before, this team - and its wonderful management - is made of truly stern stuff and Aitor Karanka in particular would disregard any talk of needing luck to win games. His meticulous preparation and attention to every detail for every single match demonstrates his obvious belief that this is the way to ultimately achieve the end result we all yearn for. Results to date - and the resulting league position - are testament to that belief. And if we are in a similar position when the season ends nobody will ever be able to intimate that we have been lucky. We haven’t!
