In The Garden
R
egularly remove any fallen leaves from borders and lawns to prevent the spread of over wintering pests and diseases. If you have a greenhouse clear it out and give it a good clean. Remove any painted glass shading and install plastic bubble wrap for insulation. Remove any remaining summer bedding from both containers and borders and replace with plants such as pansies, bellis and wallflowers that will see you through to the spring. Pot up prepared hyacinth bulbs to have flowers at Christmas and New Year. Make sure all planted containers are raised off the ground with pot feet so that they drain well in rainy weather. Continue to plant spring flowering bulbs, except tulips, so that you have a succession of flowers. If you choose the right varieties you can have bulbs in flower from January to May. Net your pond to prevent falling leaves going in and decomposing in the water. Prune bush roses by half to prevent them rocking in very windy weather which can loosen them at their roots. Also prune climbing roses now.
Lawns Keep as many leaves off the lawn as possible to prevent them blocking out light and air and damaging the grass. This is the last chance to scarify, aerate and top dress the lawn if it was not done in September. If the weather is very wet keep off the lawn as much as possible. If the grass is still growing it is fine to carry on mowing.
Fruit and Vegetables Lift and divide old rhubarb crowns that are more than five years old. Make sure that all the divisions have two or more fat pink buds. After preparing the ground really well you can plant new fruit trees and bushes now. Prune out any diseased or dead shoots on apple and pear trees and collect any fallen fruits or dead fruits on the trees. It is important to maintain hygiene in the fruit garden to prevent the spread of diseases. Remove yellow foliage and unwanted runners from strawberry plants and also any plants that look as if they are diseased. Sow over wintering broad beans. It helps if you can cover them with fleece to stop pigeons getting at them.

LOCAL ANSWER Plant out spring cabbages and these need netting to protect from pigeons. Clear your old pea and bean plants by cutting off the tops to add to the compost heap. The roots can be dug back into the ground to provide extra nitrogen to the soil. Dig over any vacant areas of the vegetable garden and leave for the frost to break down the clods into finer particles.
Wildlife Always keep your bird bath clean and topped up with fresh water. If there is a very cold spell and the water is frozen over it is very important to keep the bird bath free of ice as it usually means all other water supplies will be frozen too and yours may be the only drinking water they can find. Any type of bird food can now be used as the breeding season is over. Leave a heap of leaves in a sheltered corner of the garden for hibernating mammals and insects, which will attract ground feeding birds. If you have an old ivy plant do not cut it back now as it will provide late nectar for insects.
Looking Good This Month Acer Varieties - Brilliant foliage turning yellow, bronze or red. Anemone Hybrida - Japanese anemone. Tall stems with white or pink flowers. Colchicum - Autumn crocus/naked ladies as the flower appears without leaf. Malus Varieties - Crab apple trees with colourful fruits. Nerine Bowdenii - Masses of pink blooms on naked stems. Parthenocissus - Virginia creeper with leaves turning fiery red. Physalis - Cape gooseberry or Chinese lantern. Papery red lanterns. Pyracantha Schizostylis - Kaffir lily. Exotic looking gladiolus type flowers. Sorbus varieties - Rowan. Large clusters of bright red fruits.

THE MAZDA CX-3 - STYLE, ECONOMY AND CLASS IN THE CUV ARENA
T
he current popularity of CUVs (crossover utility vehicles) can be summed up by the huge number that queue at the local primary school every morning so mummy can drop off her little darling in what now seems to be the ‘in’ thing to drive. Effectively, they are vehicles built on a car platform and combine - in various degrees - desirable aspects of an SUV (sport utility vehicle) with the popular features of transport concepts like station wagons and hatchbacks. The downside is that many of them combine fashionable looks with unfortunately high running costs, but Mazda have launched a complete alternative in the shape of their CX-3 model that’s designed to rival the Nissan Juke, Peugeot 2008 and Renault Captur. Based on Mazda’s recently launched 2 supermini, the CX-3 promises to combine rugged looks and a high-riding driving position with exceptional economy. Unlike many rivals, the CX-3 is available with two and four-wheel drive transmission options. The former promises impressive efficiency while the latter gives a degree of both off-road ability and wintry weather security.
Two engines are available – one petrol and one diesel – and Mazda claim that both are very cost effective. By keeping weight down and employing a number of fuel-saving technologies, Mazda has managed to keep running costs for the CX-3 pretty reasonable. Driving is also a joy as the steering is light, direct and accurate, while the six-speed manual gearbox is noticeably efficient. For a tall vehicle the road holding is excellent with plenty of grip on all kinds of surface. No matter which engine you choose, you’ll enjoy similar exterior styling. The CX-3 is the latest model to be treated to Mazda’s bold KODO design treatment, and takes its cues from the larger CX-5 and the new 2. That gives a similarly bold front grille and a mix of really stylish curves and creases. Internally, the CX-3 benefits from the beautifully designed dashboard of the 2, with eyeball air vents and an instrument cluster that cleverly combines digital and analogue dials. Externally, the car looks great. Along with the angled fog lights, the CX-3’s lighting format is instantly recognisable at night and gives the compact crossover a sporty look. At the back, the tail-lights have the same effect. They’re shallow and wide, sitting across the
PAGE 18 | Please mention ‘The Local Answer Ingleby Barwick’ when calling advertisers
LOCAL ANSWER rear wings and boot lid. Above them is the black C-pillar, which helps make the Mazda look lower to the ground in conjunction with its small rear window – although this doesn’t reduce visibility. Along with the CX-3’s raised ride height, there’s lots of black plastic body cladding around the wheel arches and door sills that gives the car a rugged appearance to go with the other racy design elements. The interior is similarly well built with a stitched leather effect on the dash creating a truly up-market impression. The choice of trims is similar to that of other Mazda models with a choice of SE, SE-L and Sport Nav. Standard features on all versions include airconditioning, alloy wheels, Bluetooth, body coloured bumpers, LED headlamps, a headup display, keyless entry, a subtle tailgate spoiler and a touch-screen infotainment system that provides DAB radio and a BOSE audio system. Both SE and SE-L models can be specified with sat-nav for an extra £600. The SE-L model adds climate control, heated front seats, lane departure warning and autonomous emergency braking, while the Sport Nav gets sat-nav, larger 18-inch alloy wheels and LED headlamps and rear ‘signature lamps plus the addition of extra chrome for the sills. The 104bhp 1.5-litre diesel is the only diesel engine in the lineup but is the most efficient. It’s the same engine you’ll find in the smaller Mazda 2 and it’s a perfect character fit for the CX-3. Fortunately, this comfort doesn’t prevent you having a high degree of driving enjoyment, for - as with other Mazda models - the CX-3 has been designed with driver engagement in mind. The steering is wellweighted, quick and precise, allowing you to place the car accurately. Well-equipped and offering substantial kerb appeal, the entry-level model costs around £17,600. By contrast, the cheapest Nissan Juke will cost closer to £13,500 but it’s nowhere nearly as powerful, not as generously equipped or more importantly - as up-market. The CX-3’s external dimensions are slightly larger than those of the Nissan Juke, so
it’s no surprise to find there’s more room inside. Occupants in the back get a decent amount of legroom, while only the tallest passengers will find the sloping roofline eats into headroom. Opening the tailgate reveals a spacious 350-litre boot. The Mazda’s load lip is high, but the boot is well-shaped, plus it benefits from a handy false boot floor that can be lowered to create more space, or raised to make a flat load area when the 60/40 split rear seat is folded. Mazda has also worked hard to make the CX-3 safe, and all models get six airbags, stability control and tyre pressure monitoring. The SE-L benefits from the addition of lane departure warning and autonomous emergency braking, while the Sport Nav adds a heads-up display, reversing camera and powerful LED headlamps. Buyers can also add the all-weather security of four-wheel drive, although this electronically controlled transmission is only available in top of the range Sport Nav trim. It’s all well worth a look!

Music CATTLE & CANE - THE MUSICAL PRIDE OF TEESSIDE
I
’ve seen many great musical performances over the years but it was an absolute privilege and pleasure to be at the launch of ‘Home’ - the first album of Thornaby based folk/rock band ‘Cattle & Cane’ a couple of weeks ago. Appropriately held at the superb Teesside University Student Union building in Middlesbrough’s Southfield Road, a fully sold-out house saw a memorable performance from a group that has become - and justifiably so - the pride of Teesside. Comprised of lead singer and main songwriter Joseph Hammill, his sister Helen - both of whose vocals are absolutely tremendous - brothers Fran (Guitar) and Vin (Bass), and family friend Tom Chapman (percussion) the group have enjoyed a meteoric rise to fame - at least on Teesside over the last couple of years. Prior to the formal release of ‘Home’ Joseph admitted that the group were really proud and excited . ‘ We feel the album production lends itself to the songs,’ he said. ‘We wanted to let them shine through as much as possible – we definitely steered away from ‘over-production!’. We’re really looking
forward to getting it out there and playing live.’ And that shone through at their launch because the music was sensational and the performance from all of them exemplary. One of the most poignant moments of the night was Joseph’s solo performance of the magnificent ‘Infant Hercules’ which he dedicated to the steelworkers of Teesside. The song is a wonderful reflection on the origins of Middlesbrough, tracing as it does the town’s industrial heritage. His dedication to the current problems being faced by the Teesside steelworkers is something that should concern everyone who loves this area and its history. But the night belonged to ‘Cattle & Cane’ and the thousand plus audience gave them wonderful acknowledgement of a tremendous performance. They are truly great musicians whose awareness of their Teesside heritage ( ‘Boro fans all) shines through their music like the ICI beacons that once graced the town’s skyline. Let’s hope their progress continues and the problems facing the steel industry on Teesside can be overcome.

IT’S A GREAT TIME TO BE A ‘BORO FAN!
H
aving just watched ‘Boro’s thoroughly professional demolition of Wolves in the third round of the Capital One cup it is becoming increasingly obvious that Aitor Karanka has assembled a squad that not only combines discipline, consistency and patience but is also very capable of producing extraordinary flair. If six wins in a row hasn’t given fans the belief that this team really can overcome the disappointment of Wembley in May to give us automatic promotion then a glance towards the bench in the Wolves game really should. Despite a very comfortable 3-0 victory, absentees from the starting line-up included first team regulars Stewart Downing, Adam Clayton, Daniel Ayala, Dimi Konstantopoulis, David Nugent and seven goal Christian Stuani. Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of the game, though, was the first glimpse of the very youthful looking Carlos de Pena and his contribution on his debut was considerable with a big hand in two of the goals. That Albert Adomah thoroughly cemented his return to the first team fold with his third goal in two starts since the apparent rift with Karanka also augers well for what is - in
view of the enormous TV money soon to be available - a vital season for everyone. Of course, all this optimism can quickly diminish if the dismal Bristol City performance is ever duplicated but I can’t see that happening as this is a team that is growing in confidence and ability all the time and the comments of other championship managers suggest that they can see the depth of quality now emanating from the Riverside. Following the much awaited win at Nottingham Forest, for instance, their manager Dougie Freeman openly admitted he expected ‘Boro to win the league. Leeds are up next, of course, and in view of early deadlines I can only speculate on how that might go. After the two games last season when we absolutely dominated only to end up with nothing, it’s the old football adage that in what is effectively a derby game, anything can happen. What I do expect on this occasion, however, is that we will continue to show the strength and flair we have all enjoyed so far and by the time you read this Leeds will have been well beaten. So let’s hope that the consistency now being shown can continue long into the future. It’s probably far too much to suggest that

LOCAL ANSWER our unbeaten run could keep going through the whole season because that just doesn’t happen. Since we have already overcome the previous hoodoos of Sheffield Wednesday and Forest, however, you never really know, though looking into the very near future I see the Reading game as a huge challenge as they have already shown they are a very good side. But we can only wait and see and hope that the crowds - despite the awful circumstances surrounding Teesside steel production continue to rise and fans once more have lots to be proud of. The thirteen thousand plus gate for the Wolves game was really excellent when you consider it was one of three home games in nine days and that run must have stretched budgets considerably. But it is - without doubt - a great time to be a ‘Boro fan. Let’s just hope that if we do go up there will still be derby games up the road to look forward to. At the moment that’s looking extremely doubtful!

Recipe
EASY ORANGE CHEESECAKE INGREDIENTS BISCUIT BASE: 8 Digestive biscuits 2oz (50g) butter CHEESECAKE FILLING: 5oz (125g) natural yogurt 1 standard packet cream cheese 1oz (25g) sugar 1/2 orange jelly Juice and grated peel of 1/2 orange
METHOD No baking is required for this really quick and easy retro recipe. Crush digestive biscuits (Put them in a small sandwich bag and bash them with a rolling pin!) Meanwhile melt the butter in a saucepan. Add the crushed biscuits to the melted butter and stir until all the biscuits are coated.
Pour the biscuit mixture into a greased 8 inch loose bottomed cake tin and press down with the back of a metal spoon. Place your base in the freezer for half an hour to set whilst you make the filling. Cream the yogurt and cream cheese together. Melt half an orange jelly in 2 tablespoons boiled water, add sugar and stir until dissolved. Add to yogurt mixture with juice and peel of half an orange Pour onto biscuit base, smooth over and place in fridge to set. Once set, add the topping of your choice – We used Cadbury’s flake and a tin of mandarins. You could easily adapt this Easy Orange Cheesecake to Lemon Cheesecake by simply substituting the orange jelly, orange juice and peel for lemon jelly, lemon juice and lemon peel.
