and improve next years crop. Prevent any disease getting into your tree by ensuring your saw and secateurs are sharp and clean. Leave cordons and espaliers, they should be pruned in late summer.
Root crops such as parsnips, leeks, kale, winter cabbages and sprouts should be harvested this month, ready for use with your Christmas lunch.
Ensure outside plumbing is well insulated, even if not in use, including outside taps, ponds and drainpipes. Switch off and drain any water attachments, store them indoors if at all possible.
Apply a dry mulch around borderlinehardy plants such as Agapanthus, Hedychium and Melianthus to protect the crown from the winter frosts and snow.
If you have fish in your pond, make sure they have air holes if the water freezes over. A rubber ball left to float should prevent the water from freezing over.
Start to reduce the amount of water you are giving to your houseplants. They require less water through the winter months, but keep an eye on any which are located near any sources of heat, such as radiators and heaters as these are prone to dry out more.
Unused terracotta pots need protection. Bring them indoors or store them in your shed until spring. If you have some in use, wrap them in bubblewrap or newspaper to help protect them from the damaging frosts.
Containter-grown herbs can be brought inside, such as chives, mint and basil. They will do best on a sunny windowsill. Apple and Pear trees can be pruned in December to maintain healthy growth
Bird feeders should be kept topped up with fresh seeds and nuts throughout the winter months. Bird baths will also need to be topped up during winter. A kettle of water in the morning will ensure a nonfrozen bird bath through most of the day.

December is the perfect time to dig heavy soils as the winter frosts will help to break down any newly turned lumps, leaving you with more manageable soil next season. Flamboyant summer displays may well be over, but there is no reason why your garden cannot look just as spectacular during December. WINTER’S ON THE WAY... MAKE SURE YOUR CAR IS GOOD AND READY!
I
t’s bitterly cold, you’re driving home from work looking forward to a warm house and a ready prepared meal and suddenly the car gives up. It’s the last thing any driver needs, but while the weather is still in a decent mode there is so much you can do now to prevent any such disaster.
If you’re due for a tune-up, have it done before winter sets in. Winter magnifies existing problems such as difficult starts and laboured performance so tuning the car now makes sure it will run smoothly however cold the conditions. Be diligent about changing the oil and filter at recommended intervals as dirty oil can spell trouble in winter. Check the fuel, air and transmission filters at the same time.
Checking the most relevant parts of the car before winter properly arrives is a sensible way to be confident you won’t be Get the battery and charging system stranded out in the cold with the inevitable expense that emergency repairs checked for optimum performance. but could well save you a fortune in the long run! Make sure heaters, defrosters and wipers work properly. Consider winter wiper blades and use cold weather washer fluid. As a general rule, wiper blades should be replaced every six months.
Try and keep the petrol tank at least half full at all times to decrease the chances of moisture forming in the pipes and possibly freezing. This also gives the car added weight to enhance your grip on the road.
If you aren’t already a member of one of the emergency motoring organisations then invest in membership now. It’s always Stock up the car with a good windscreen hoped that you’ll never need them but defrost spray and a decent scraper. A believe me, there isn’t a more welcoming brush, a set of jump leads, a blanket, a bottle of water and a torch are all pieces of sight when you’re stuck at the side of the road wondering whether you’ll ever get equipment that could ultimately become home. For the relatively small cost it could really, really useful, so store them in the boot just in case. be the best investment you’ve ever made. Check the tread depth and pressure of your tyres. They are the contact between you and the road and it’s absolutely vital that they are equipped to do the job that is asked of them.
Looking after all these seemingly obvious things is a task that can easily be overlooked until it’s too late, so make sure for everybody’s sake that you don’t become one of those poor unfortunates we see stranded at the side of the road on dark, cold nights.
If snow and ice are a problem in your particular area, consider special tyres designed to grip slick roads. During winter, Have a great - and very safe - winter. the tyre pressures should be checked weekly. All this also applies to your spare www.raceandrallyexperiences.com wheel so check that too! In addition to your tyres, the braking system is also the most vital ingredient in keeping you safe on the road, so have them checked. The ability to stop quickly and efficiently could be the difference between disaster and staying accident free. Have the exhaust system checked for carbon monoxide leaks. Winter weather means your windows are permanently closed and your heater is turned up most of the time so infiltration of toxic fumes could be a real danger. Check to see that exterior and interior lights work, headlights are properly aimed and your indicators, fog lamps and warning lights are all operating efficiently. Letting other road users know your intentions in plenty of time can prevent a lot of accidents in icy conditions.

Christmas A TRUE - AND LOVELY - CHRISTMAS STORY
Y
ou may well have heard this story before but we feel it’s worth re-telling because the message it portrays is one of hope and should give all of us on Teesside the thought that however bad things may currently seem you never know what lies around the corner! Robert May was born in America in the early nineteen hundreds and was never destined to grow more than five feet tall. Because of that he was bullied at school and was never taken seriously in anything he attempted. When he left university he began work as a copywriter with Chicago Mail Order House Montgomery Ward and eventually felt fortunate to find a wife who bore him a daughter. Sadly, his wife became ill and bedridden and a great percentage of his earnings went on medication and doctor’s bills and he struggled to make ends meet. One evening his four year old daughter climbed onto his knee and asked ‘Daddy, why isn’t mummy like everyone else’s mummy?’ It was a simple question asked with child-like curiosity but it struck a personal chord with Robert May. He had often asked the same question about his own lack of height and to try and relieve the awkwardness of the moment he began to tell his daughter a story. It was about someone else who was different, ridiculed, humiliated and excluded because of the difference. Bob told the story in a humorous way, making it up as he went along like dads do. His daughter laughed and clapped as the misfit finally triumphed at the end of the story. Night after night she appealed to him to re-tell the story and she never tired of it. Because he had very little money for Christmas presents for his daughter he decided that he would do something special for her that year and so he turned the story
into a poem and used his own artistic talent to illustrate it and turn it into a hand-written book. On the night before Christmas he took it to the office Christmas party to show one of his colleagues. His friend was impressed and insisted he read the story aloud to everyone else at the party. Somewhat embarrassed by the attention, he took the small volume from his pocket and began to read. At first the noisy group listened in laughter and amusement but then became silent and attentive. When he finished they broke into spontaneous applause. Later, and feeling quite pleased with himself, Bob took the book home and wrapped it lovingly for his daughter’s present. Needless to say she adored it. When Robert returned to work after the holiday he was summoned to see his manager. He was told that everyone was talking about his story and that marketing were looking for a promotional tool. He asked Robert’s permission to have his story published. The following year - 1939 - a copy of the book was given to every child who visited the department stores of Montgomery Ward and it eventually became an international best seller, making Robert a rich man. Sadly, his wife had passed away in the meantime, but he was able to move from the small apartment and buy a big house where he was able to provide handsomely for his growing daughter. The story is not quite over. In 1947 songwriter Johnny Marks used the theme of Robert’s poem to write a song that eventually became a world-wide number one hit for famous film star of the day Gene Autry - the singing cowboy. You may just remember it. The first line goes ‘Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.......!’

Christmas Coffee Break Humour
D
espite the atrocities of the past few weeks there is little doubt that we are all still relishing the Christmas break. To try and relieve some of the problems the world - and France in particular - has had to face here are a few Christmas tales that might hopefully bring a smile or two.
confidently. “Rudolph and Olive?” said the mother, quizzically. “Are you sure?” “Yes, mommy, Rudolph and Olive. Like in the song.”“The song?” asked the mother. “What song?” The girl sang, “Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer, had a very shiny nose. And if you ever saw it, you would even say it glows. Olive the other reindeer....”
A great letter to Santa... Dear Santa, This Christmas can you send me a fat bank account and a nice, thin body. But please be careful because I asked for the same last year and you got it the wrong way round.
A 6 year old boy told his parents he didn’t want to go to church on Christmas Day. “But,” said his mother, “It’s important to go and celebrate the birth of Jesus” “Why?” asked the little lad. “We don’t even KNOW him!”
A guy bought his wife a beautiful diamond ring for Christmas. After hearing about this extravagant gift, a friend of his said, “I thought she wanted one of those sporty fourwheel-drive vehicles.” “She did,” he replied. “But where was I going to find a fake Jeep?”
A couple purchased an old home in Northern New York State from two elderly sisters. Winter was fast approaching and the lady of the house was concerned about the house’s lack of insulation. “If those two old ladies could live here all those years, so can we!” her husband confidently declared. One November night the temperature plunged to below zero, and they woke to find the interior walls covered with frost. The husband called the sisters to ask how they had kept the house warm. After a rather brief conversation, he hung up. “For the past 30 years,” he muttered, “they’ve gone to Florida for the winter.”
When a father asked his little boy what he wanted for Christmas, the boy replied, “A baby sister.” As it turned out, his wife was pregnant anyway, and duly delivered on Christmas Eve. On Christmas day she brought home a brand new baby sister for their son. The next year, when the father asked his little boy what he wanted for Christmas, the boy said, “If it wouldn’t make mommy too uncomfortable, I’d like a pony.” One Christmas, a mother asked her young daughter if she could name two of Santa’s reindeer. “Rudolph and Olive,” replied the young girl
As a little girl climbed onto Santa’s lap, Santa asked the usual, “And what would you like for Christmas?” The child stared at him open mouthed and horrified for a minute, then gasped, “Didn’t you get my E-mail?”

WE REALLY HAVE TO BE MORE PATIENT!
I
t’s hard to deny that ‘Boro make very hard work of breaking down teams who come to the Riverside hoping to go away with a point but the way the Championship is progressing this season most hosts are going to be faced with similar problems. The perfect example of the perpetrators are Queens Park Rangers who arrived with probably the most valuable (in terms of transfer fees) team in the league, yet instead of coming with a progressive and attacking policy they instead put eight or nine men behind the ball in the hope their expensively constructed squad might create a single goal on the break. That ‘Boro kept their formation, remained patient and ultimately got their rewards from a completely unnecessary handball when Rob Green had the shot covered is perhaps the ultimate justice we deserved on a night where we could -and should - have been a couple of goals up at half time. But, for me, the most rewarding aspect of a night where the weather was dreadful and the match was live on every pub TV in Middlesbrough was that a thoroughly committed crowd of 20,000 plus turned up to watch the match at an average cost in excess of £25. It’s true that before the end some of these supporters - and let’s be honest they are people who - at the price and under the conditions - must be real ‘Boro supporters decided to voice their frustration at the way we often passed backwards and sideways
with only minutes to go. I have to confess I found myself voicing similar protests but the end result proved both mine - and other complaints - to be totally unfounded. And that’s why we are going to have to be incredibly patient and believe in what Aitor is trying to achieve. Match winner Grant Leadbitter summed it up perfectly afterwards when he said ‘You get days where you come off the pitch frustrated but you also get days when you finish with three points and everybody is pleased. You achieve that by being patient and keeping possession. That is the belief we have in the dressing room and that is what we want the fans to buy into.’ There’s an awfully long way to go with only a third of the season gone but this is where most of the more realistic ‘Boro fans would have given their right arm for us to be at this stage in the season. But by the time you read this (deadlines again mean I have no idea what happened) we’ll have played Huddersfield and Ipswich away and had the quarter final home tie against rapidly improving Everton in the Capital One Cup quarter finals. If we are looking for omens, one of the proudest moments in our history included the fact that after a 0-0 full time score at the Riverside we beat Everton 5-4 on penalties to progress to the quarter final tie away to Spurs where we again won on penalties. And who can forget Franck Queudrue’s wonderfully confident walk to the penalty spot at White

LOCAL ANSWER Hart Lane, he juggled the ball on his head before scoring the goal that gave us give victory and a semi final opportunity against Arsenal. To sum it up there is a great deal of luck and even more patience required to have a successful season because every side in the league is hoping for the same thing. As only one team in the twenty four Championship contenders we have to hope that we can eventually pull it off. It has to be said, though, that we haven’t been totally convincing so far, but the fact that as I write we are only two points off the top two teams suggests that if we do finally begin to click the league is ours for the taking. The margins are minimal but the belief around the Riverside should be extremely positive. In Aitor we should really trust because before his arrival we were going nowhere. Now we really are heading upwards... Have a fantastic Christmas, a wonderful New Year and a hopefully winning end to the 2015-16 season.

Recipe
TROPICAL COCONUT CHRISTMAS CAKE
A
s with a traditional Christmas cake, you can use any fruits you’d like in this recipe. There are some great pre-mixes of tropical fruit out there that will save you buying them all separately, and the ginger can be omitted if you want.
COCONUT ICING: 75g butter 150g icing sugar 200g desiccated coconut
INGREDIENTS
If you’ve time, soak the dried fruit overnight in the rum, in a covered bowl.
CAKE: 600g mixed tropical dried fruit (Maybe a 200g mix of apricots, sultanas and apples, plus 400g mix of pineapple, papaya and mango) 50ml rum or other spirit (optional) 185g butter 185g golden caster or light brown sugar 3 eggs 225g plain flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 30g chopped crystallised ginger Spice blend as desired – Example: 1 teaspoon each of cinnamon and ginger and 1½ teaspoons of nutmeg
METHOD
Beat together the sugar and butter until light and fluffy. Add the eggs, spices, baking powder and sieved flour, and beat again until smooth. Finally, add the dried fruit and ginger and mix well combined with an even distribution of fruit. Pour into a greased, lined tin – 7 inches round with high sides is perfect, but you could use a larger round, a square or even a novelty tin. Bake at 150 degrees for 2½ to 3 hours, until an inserted skewer comes out clean. Timing

LOCAL ANSWER will very much depend on your oven type, it would take 2½ hours in a fan oven. If the top is starting to brown then cover with tin foil for the remainder of the cooking time. Remove from the tin and leave to cool completely – overnight is ideal as you don’t want the icing to melt off! For the icing, simply beat together the butter and icing sugar until light and fluffy. If you have an electric stand mixer then leave it on for 4-5 minutes, the extra beating will lighten the mixture. Add the coconut and beat again until smooth, use a dash of milk if it’s a little too stiff. Use immediately as it will set hard – applying generously all over the cake, and smoothing with a palette knife dipped in hot water. Decorate as required and finish with a festive greeting!
