M
ow lawns regularly in May. They will need to be mowed at least weekly, twice weekly if possible now as they will grow very rapidly at this time of year. Avoid mowing too short this early on as this may cause the roots to grow shallowly and will make the lawn susceptible to moss and weeds Treat bare patches – this can be done by throwing seed down where the grass is thin. This is known as over-seeding. Feed the lawn – feeding the lawn with a fertilizer will ensure a thicker, healthier more drough-resilient lawn. Treat moss and weeds – feeding the lawn should assist in keeping the moss and weeds at bay, however, if it does persist there are products on the market that will feed and weed the lawn. Aerate Lawn – if your lawn is growing on heavy, compacted or clay soil, it will benefit from being aereated at this time of year. Aerating improves the drainage on your lawn and encourages good growth. Remember to dress the surface once aerating is done as this will further improve drainage.
Garden Care
Keep on top of weeds – the soil is starting to really warm up now so weeds will be growing rapidly. Keep on top on top of
them in flower and veg beds by hoeing them and pulling out as much of the weeds as possible, so they are unable to take a hold. Plant seedlings out – you can now start to harden off seedlings sown in February and March. Start by introducing them slowly by putting them out during the day and after a week or so, you can plant them into their final position. Prepare your beds – get your beds ready for planting your bedding plants by clearing debris and adding fertilizer and compost to your soil. Look out for pests – the vine weevil will attack container plants but you can add nematodes now to kill them off. The most vulnerable plants to this pest are cyclamen, begonia and primula. Dead head spring bulbs – you can now start to dead head daffodils and other spring flowers as they die off. Leave the leaves of the plant to die off naturally and feeding these plants now will ensure a good display for next year. Trim hedges – this is the time of year to give your hedges their first trim. In warmer climates, hanging baskets can now go out for the summer – elsewhere, these can be hung in a greenhouse until the risk of frost has passed. Dead head daffodils and tulips and other

LOCAL ANSWER spring bedding plants – let the plants continue to grow until they die off as this will enable the bulbs to store up energy for blooming in the next spring.

Winter crops can now be sown – Leeks, brussels sprouts, winter cabbage, marrow. Starting them off in pots is a good idea, you can then plant them out in a few weeks once you have seedlings. Harden off your tomatoes – If you have ‘potted on’ your tomato seedlings, May is a good time to start hardening them off by introducing them gradually to the outside, extending the length of time you leave them out each day. However, do not leave the plants out overnight until all risk of frost has passed as they are very sensitive to frost and it will kill them off. Alternatively you can introduce them to an unheated greenhouse to harden them off. Earth up your potatoes – Keep pulling the soil up around the base of your potatoes to avoid them coming into contact with the light, as this turns them green.
Other Activities
Pinch out the tops of sweet peas – this encourages the plant to bush out and produce more flowers Keep on top of your composting – during the growing season, you will need to keep topping up with well-rotted compost. Feeding everywhere in your garden is a good idea in May, as it helps to get the nutrients back into the soil after the wet winter months. Keep ponds clear and filters clean – also start feeding fish regularly. As the days warm up and we see more of the sun, you may see blanket weed forming on the surface of your pond. Remember to remove this as soon as it appears as it will spread quickly once it gets a hold. Look out for disease on your roses – these can include mildew, rust and blackspot. Diseased leaves should be removed as soon as possible.

SAFETY FIRST FOR THE ALL NEW 2016 VOLKSWAGEN PASSAT
I
f safety is more important to you than devastating good looks - and why wouldn’t it be? - the Blue-Motion - VW’s new version of the consistently popular Passat is definitely the car for you. The upgraded design still plays it safe in every possible way but there is nevertheless a lot of appeal in its new look. Volkswagen claim the car has been given a more dynamic presence and sophisticated look, but closer examination shows that the upgrade is fairly standard with new front and rear styling tweaks, revised interior surfaces and details, a new steering-wheel design, new column-stalk design, and chrome and piano black trim. There’s a little more chrome at the back, a domed bonnet and a more substantial fourbar front grille, however, that definitely do add to the sophistication. LED headlights and rear lights also improve the exterior looks, while an R-Line trim with black accents, rear diffuser and unique alloys with
Z-rated rubber create a slightly more sporty look.. Despite the well publicised ‘Dieselgate’ scandal, VW have made the new Passat diesel only, obviously aiming at the extremely lucrative company car market.
It rides some 15mm lower on a sports suspension to reduce drag and with front shutters directing air around the nose there is a considerable impact on efficiency. VW claim the BlueMotion model offers 76.3mpg while the economy continues with CO2

LOCAL ANSWER emissions of 95g/km resulting in free road tax! Despite all that, the current generation of the Passat is extremely pleasant to drive with light yet accurate and nicely weighted steering and a relatively tight suspension creating excellent control. The BlueMotion is based on the former S-model but there is certainly no lack of quality internally. Like most VWs the car is comfortable, internally efficient space-wise and the lack of unnecessary additional equipment means it’s also very neat. Back seat accommodation is particularly good, with genuinely adult-size seats, of which heated versions are on offer. It’s also easy to get into and out of thanks to the more formal roofline. There’s also an easyaccess feature allowing the vast trunk to be opened with your foot. Back to safety, and the Passat has earned some excellent crash-test ratings, making it one of the top-performing sedans in its class for occupant protection. A rearview camera system is standard equipment, as is a Post-Collision Braking System, helping to reduce (or lessen the severity of ) secondary collisions. Upper trim levels of the Passat can include Adaptive Cruise Control, and a new Parking Steering Assistant. One big improvement is the inclusion of VW’s latest - and excellent - ‘infotainment’ system as part of an impressive range of standard features. Keyless start, stop-start engine function, ABS electronic brakepress distribution, battery regeneration, electronic parking brake, electric windows and electrically heated and adjustable door mirrors are all included. The aforementioned infotainment system features a 6.5 inch touchscreen with USB and Bluetooth. Completing the wide array of features are 17 inch alloys and LED lighting. You’ll be looking at a price from around £23,530 for a 1.6-litre 4 cyclinder diesel with six-speed manual gearbox and front wheel
drive. Top speed is 130mph but that - in this country - should be fairly irrelevant anyway! To sum up we feel that the new Passat BlueMotion will really please company car drivers with exceptional efficiency and undemanding performance. It should also please the family man because it is an excellent family car that will not only look great on the drive but will give loads of space and lots of comfort for a very reasonable outlay.

At Home TYPES OF DISINFECTANT - WHAT TO USE WHERE
C
leaning products will generally remove visible dirt and grease and create a cleaner-smelling atmosphere. They do not however kill germs, but disinfectants do. Whilst scientists say that many of the bacteria in our homes are friendly bacteria and do not cause diseases, they do recommend that danger areas such as kitchens, bathrooms, rubbish bins and drains are treated with a good quality disinfectant regularly. Of course new products are being developed all the time, but for most it will currently be appropriate to use some of the stand alone disinfectants around the home as well as multi-purpose cleaners. If you are using disinfectant however you need to remember that to be effective, it has to sit for at least 5 to 10 minutes in order to have time to kill the bacteria. Read the product label for exact instructions. Household disinfectants generally work by destroying the cell wall of microbes or by interfering with the metabolism of organisms that are living on the objects. In the kitchen, work surfaces and handles particularly cupboard and refrigerator handles can be home to germs. An E-coli bacterium comes from raw meats, listeria from soft cheeses, and salmonella from chicken and raw eggs. In the bathroom, waste particles can stick to the hands, which may then be transferred to the flush and the door handle. Viruses such as the flu, rotavirus, and rhinovirus which cause muscle aches, vomiting, and cold symptoms respectively can also breed well in bathrooms due
to the warm, steamy atmosphere which germs love. As work surfaces and handles can’t be washed in a basin of hot soapy water, disinfectant sprays and wipes are ideal for these areas. In addition to sprays and wipes, disinfectant frequently comes in liquid form either in a regular formula or a concentrated variety. There are special varieties for outdoor use for instance for paths and drains and also some versions usually prefaced by ‘antiseptic;’ which can be used on the skin. Read the instructions carefully though as most general disinfectants can irritate the skin so the use of rubber gloves is recommended and you should avoid contact with the eyes. They also generally have a strong odour so should not be used in tight airless spaces. Many household varieties have a chlorine base but in commercial and hospital environments forms using alcohol or ammonia are commonplace. Defra also provide regulation around disinfectants which can be used alongside animals. By Susan Brookes-Morris

THE CLIFF HANGER NOBODY WANTED!
A
t the time of writing this I’m still in a state of disbelief that once again we only got one point from a game we dominated, producing enough gilt edged chances to have seen us out of sight by half time.
Birmingham - and our fantastic record on Friday night televised games should make us feel pretty confident about bringing three points back from St Andrews - it’s all coming down to what we all hope is our last game of the season.
The Ipswich result was sadly characteristic of a number of occasions this season where ‘Boro’s school report would have read ‘could have done better!
The more cynical among us, though, are probably already working out which team we are likely to get in the two leg play-off for Wembley!
Coupled with the wins for Brighton and Burnley, of course, it means we are now faced with the ‘cliff hanger’ to end all ‘cliff hangers.’ It’s a scenario most of have dreaded for ages with the last game at home to Brighton the one on which our whole season now rests.
To be honest I’m not sure my heart will take another play-off battering so let’s hope that on Saturday May 7th the ‘real’ Middlesbrough will turn up, convert a couple of early chances and put us all out of our misery. But we all know - having been ‘Boro fans all our lives - that things are never that simple.
Forget the desire to go up as Champions. The fixture list has almost certainly bequeathed that honour to Burnley, though Sean Dyche’s incredibly hypercritical sniping at ‘Boro’s spending is one reason why most of us were hoping they would only make the play-offs. No, regardless of the result against

LOCAL ANSWER was one of the bits we could well have done without but in view of the way Neil Warnock has had Rotherham playing since his arrival there’s nothing to say we wouldn’t have lost that game anyway. If, at the end of the season, we are still in the Championship then there will be post mortems galore and everyone will no doubt have their own reasons why. But that is in the future, so instead of prematurely looking at a glass that’s half empty let’s instead be completely optimistic and believe in Aitor and his excellent squad and back them completely to do the business for us all. It’s an amazingly exciting time and one that will have the nerves jangling right up until it’s all decided. Let’s hope when it’s all over we can ultimately sit back and enjoy it as having been a very satisfying time to be a ‘Boro fan.

HOMEMADE OREO COOKIES EQUIPMENT & INGREDIENTS Baking trays, baking parchment, cookie cutter, electric mix, rolling pin, disposable icing bag (or knife) and bowls. FOR THE BISCUIT: 210g plain flour 75g cocoa powder 1/2 tsp bicarbonate of soda pinch salt 80g butter, melted and cooled slightly 100g dark brown sugar 1 egg FOR THE BUTTERCREAM: 80g butter 200g icing sugar 50g caster sugar 1 tsp vanilla powder 1 tsp milk
METHOD In one bowl mix the flour, cocoa, bicarbonate of soda and salt. In another bowl mix the melted butter, sugar and egg.
Pour the liquid mix into the dry mix and form a dough. Place dough between two pieces of baking parchment and roll out (you might want to do this in halves or thirds). Cut out shapes using a 2 inch diameter circle but make whatever size and shape you want. Place shapes on sheets of baking parchment on trays and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Pre-heat oven to 170°C or 150°C fan. Bake the biscuits for 7-10 minutes (depending on size). To make the buttercream use an electric mixer if possible. Beat the butter until fluffy. Add both sugars and vanilla and beat more. Add the milk. This makes it a bit more pliable for sandwiching. Using a disposable icing bag (or a knife) pipe the cream in a circle on the edge of the biscuit. Use another biscuit to sandwich together.
