ut established hedges in June to tidy them if they are growing fast. A final cut can be done in early autumn before the weather turns colder. Clip Box hedges and shapes. Scoop out Blanket weed from ponds to keep the water clear. Make sure that canes used to stake plants are topped with eye protectors. Use old plastic plant pots if you have any lying around. Patio and Container Gardening Stake Lilies and Gladiolus growing in pots. They may be damaged by strong winds as they run up to flower. Feed your summer containers each week with a liquid or a concentrate that can be added to your watering can. Keep an eye on hanging baskets and check them for water twice a day. Watch for slug and snail damage and use your preferred method of control. Try cutting an orange in half and leaving outside. Slugs are attracted to oranges making it easier to find the pests, scoop them up and get rid of them! Bulbs and Perennials Lift congested clumps of Daffodils and
dry off the bulbs ready to be replanted in autumn. Lift and ‘heel in’ Tulips if they are in the way of any plans for your summer borders. Once they have finished dying back, they can be replanted in November. Chop back spring flowering Clematis including C. montana and C. macropetala to tidy them. Some of the old, flowered wood can be removed completely if the plants are very congested. Stake tall growing Dahlias as they start to grow away. Trees and Shrubs Remove as many dead heads from Rhododendrons as possible before they set seed by snapping them off. Prune any long new growths on evergreen shrubs such as Choysia, Viburnum tinus and Arbutus to shape them. Prune Rock Roses (Helianthemum) hard after flowering to keep them bushy and make them live longer. Feed Roses with a granular fertilizer such as Top Rose and water in well. Remove spent flower heads regularly on those that repeat flower. Sowing and Planting Tie Sweet Peas to their supports to

LOCAL ANSWER encourage them to twine and become self supporting. Plant out stock purchased from your local garden centre as soon as you can and make sure that newly planted stock does not go short of water. Sow Wallflowers in a nursery bed if you have not already done so. Plant out tender (half hardy) perennials including Osteospermum and Pelargoniums (Geraniums) now that threat of frost is past. Lawns Cut your lawn at least once a week if the grass is growing strongly, on a low blade setting. Spot treat any weeds with a ready to use lawn weed killer. Apply a granular or liquid feed to green up your grass if it is needed. Lightly cut newly sown lawns when the grass reaches a height of 5 to 7cm (2 to 3 inches). The Vegetable Garden Tap the blooms on Tomato plants to help pollination. Plant out Sweet Corn in a block rather than a row for better pollination. Plant out Runner and French beans sown last month once they are large enough. Plant out Courgettes and other squashes into well-manured ground. Transplant Leeks to their final position once they have reached 25cm high. Water all crops well, twice a week if the ground is very dry. Wildlife Provide a wooden ramp so that frogs and toads can escape from sunken areas in the garden such as decking. Leave an area of long grass in a quiet corner if you have space. Many Butterflies will lay their eggs on this and it will provide cover for young frogs, toads and newts. Begin to collect pieces of rotting wood or old logs and place them in a shady corner as a habitat for insects and other creatures. As well as a breeding place this will also act as a larder for birds.

Motoring
THE SIXTIES ICON THAT STILL STANDS THE TEST OF TIME!
G
oing back to the sixties when the Mini was first launched, few would have envisaged its enduring popularity but early models are now considered real classics and are consequently much sought after. The Mini was, of course, the original game changer in the premium small car class and when BMW acquired the Rover Group (formerly British Leyland) in 1994 they retained the rights to build cars using the MINI name even though most of the rest was sold on in 2000. Today’s Mini is, of course, very different to that original 60s icon and now - under the ownership of the BMW Group, the Mini – or MINI, as it’s officially labelled – is bigger, and is just one of a family of related models that the original designer Issigonis (who died in 1988) would probably never have dreamed of. Despite the obvious increase in size, ‘new’ MINI buyers seem more than willing to pay for a classy super-mini with a prestige badge and a style that still bears some sort
of resemblance to the original. It is also still handy enough in size to suit urban driving and parking conditions. That said, the new Clubman has – for the first time – the availability of a four wheel drive set up, though only on the Cooper S and SD models. Even then it isn’t a permanent feature, instead remaining front wheel drive until slip is detected at which point the rear wheels are instantly re-coupled. It also features torque vectoring enabling it to brake or send power to individual wheels. Such additions add weight to the car but that doesn’t detract at all from the enjoyment of driving it. While Mini were able to call the previous Clubman a five-door , two of them were for access to the boot, with only one giving access to the back seats. The new model is now actually what the rest of the carmaking world calls a five-door – though Mini now use the term ‘six-door, ‘ because they have retained the two doors at the back.
PAGE 18 | Please mention ‘The Local Answer Ingleby Barwick’ when calling advertisers
LOCAL ANSWER Despite that, it really is now a full size car. It is relatively low, however, and still smaller than full-size hatchbacks so can genuinely still be classed as a ‘MINI.’ The Clubman is built on the same UKL1 platform as the Mini hatchback but benefits from a completely redeveloped front suspension and multi link rear. A choice of three and four cylinder turbo petrol engines is available in Cooper and Cooper S variants and from Cooper D and Cooper SD 2.0 litre diesel engines. There is also an optional eight speed gearbox on certain models. Internally, there’s plenty of room for a couple of sizeable adults in the back but the middle seat is narrow and there’s a bit of a lump on the floor to straddle. That said, though, the soft base makes it very comfortable. The boot is slightly smaller than a Golf, but larger than a Ford Focus and has a hinged shelf that can be used to divide the load space. Large items are no problem, though the double rear doors only add complications in accessing the boot. There’s ample room up front, and the Clubman boasts more storage space than a Mini hatchback, with bigger door bins and more cubby holes. Mini UK has decided not to sell the Clubman in basic One specification, which makes the starting price for the range appear expensive compared with more mainstream offerings. In addition, there’s no version of the Clubman that emits less than 100g/km of CO2, which might be a detrimental factor in the lucrative company car market. There are a number of personalisation options available but you need to be careful because they can push the price up significantly. Standard equipment includes remote keyless entry, electric front windows, telescoping and tilt steering wheel, heated door mirrors, air conditioning and speed control. One really excellent package on offer covers all servicing for five years or 50,000 miles,
as well as the cost of any replacement parts that are needed to get your car through an MOT during that period. There is little doubt that the new Clubman will appeal to a much wider audience than ever before as it has become a perfect family car that nevertheless combines fun with a reasonably economical drive. So if you’ve previously enjoyed the sporty appeal of the car and have now reached the point where a family style car is more appropriate you certainly aren’t going to feel disappointed.

Football
A FABULOUS END TO THE SEASON
T
he most wonderful thing about this year’s Championship play-offs is that ‘Boro avoided them with a sensational final day that still has me tingling every time I think about it. It was a fabulous end to a truly sensational season and - to be perfectly honest - was no more than we deserved. The fact that Brighton finished the season 15 points above Sheffield Wednesday, beat them both home and away in the league yet lost to them in the lottery of the play-offs was the best example of why we just had to avoid this incredibly unfair system that only exists to increase the already ludicrous amounts of money that football attracts. Sadly - and typically - ‘Boro made very, very hard work of ending up in the automatic promotion places and that applies to both the season itself and that very special Saturday. A quick glance at our results against the top sides in the division demonstrates just how much we deserved our
promotion because results against the other five sides in the top six show we won 21 out of 30 - losing only to Hull. Conversely, only 11 points out of 30 were won against Rotherham, MK Dons, Charlton, Bristol City, and Fulham - all of whom ended up in the bottom seven. But that’s where we have to stop looking back and start looking forward to probably the greatest opportunity most of our squad have experienced in their careers. Cup wins against Manchester City and Manchester United , and the incredible Liverpool performance where we lost 1413 on penalties show that we have huge potential against the top sides. Having said that, the performances in the same period against Arsenal and Everton unfortunately demonstrate we have a lot to learn and mean we can’t show any signs of complacency. So while I’ve never considered that spending huge amounts of money guarantees anything I suppose we have

to look at the potential the transfer market offers. And while we can all look with envy on what ‘little Leicester’ achieved this year we can only hope to emulate the feats of Bournemouth who did enough to earn a second successive stay in the financial wonderland that is the Premiership. There’s little doubt that Gary Gill and his team have scoured the world for potential superstars, but given the choice there is little doubt that any player good enough to be approached by a premiership side would hesitate before committing themselves to Middlesbrough. That is certainly not a criticism from me of a region I personally adore. It is simply a fact that sarcastic and unfounded comments from Southern journalists and a fairly inclement climate have given the area an unfortunate reputation.
