R
egularly remove any fallen leaves from borders and lawns to prevent the spread of over wintering pests and diseases. If you have a greenhouse clear it out and give it a good clean. Remove any painted glass shading and install plastic bubble wrap for insulation. Remove any remaining summer bedding from both containers and borders and replace with plants such as pansies, bellis and wallflowers that will see you through to the spring. Pot up prepared hyacinth bulbs to have flowers at Christmas and New Year. Make sure all planted containers are raised off the ground with pot feet so that they drain well in rainy weather. Continue to plant spring flowering bulbs, except tulips, so that you have a succession of flowers. If you choose the right varieties you can have bulbs in flower from January to May. Net your pond to prevent falling leaves going in and decomposing in the water. Prune bush roses by half to prevent them rocking in very windy weather which can loosen them at their roots. Also prune climbing roses now.
Lawns Keep as many leaves off the lawn as possible to prevent them blocking out light and air and damaging the grass. This is the last chance to scarify, aerate and top dress the lawn if it was not done in September. If the weather is very wet keep off the lawn as much as possible. If the grass is still growing it is fine to carry on mowing.
Fruit and Vegetables Lift and divide old rhubarb crowns that are more than five years old. Make sure that all the divisions have two or more fat pink buds. After preparing the ground really well you can plant new fruit trees and bushes now. Prune out any diseased or dead shoots on apple and pear trees and collect any fallen fruits or dead fruits on the trees. It is important to maintain hygiene in the fruit garden to prevent the spread of diseases. Remove yellow foliage and unwanted runners from strawberry plants and also any plants that look as if they are diseased. Sow over wintering broad beans. It helps if you can cover them with fleece to stop pigeons getting at them.

LOCAL ANSWER Plant out spring cabbages and these need netting to protect from pigeons. Clear your old pea and bean plants by cutting off the tops to add to the compost heap. The roots can be dug back into the ground to provide extra nitrogen to the soil. Dig over any vacant areas of the vegetable garden and leave for the frost to break down the clods into finer particles.
Wildlife Always keep your bird bath clean and topped up with fresh water. If there is a very cold spell and the water is frozen over it is very important to keep the bird bath free of ice as it usually means all other water supplies will be frozen too and yours may be the only drinking water they can find. Any type of bird food can now be used as the breeding season is over. Leave a heap of leaves in a sheltered corner of the garden for hibernating mammals and insects, which will attract ground feeding birds. If you have an old ivy plant do not cut it back now as it will provide late nectar for insects.

THE NEW RENAULT GRAND SCENIC - WELL WORTH A LOOK!
A
s a Renault Scenic driver – and dare I say it – enthusiast, the arrival of a new version is something I’ve personally loved examining. The spacious feel, the high riding seats and the SUV inspired styling are all features that I have come to truly appreciate in my own car and this latest offering gives all that and much, much more. The recently released ‘Grand Scenic’ offers a wonderful alternative to the bland choices currently filling the mid-sized MPV sector. It’s a perfect family car with a really roomy interior boasting a large expanse of glass and plenty of adjustments for the steering wheel and driver’s seat. On the lower trim models, the dashboard features a 7-inch portrait mounted touch screen, rising to an 8.7-inch screen on the higher models. Three rows of seats are provided for the larger family, but for those with the average 2.4 children the third can be neatly fold flat into the floor to give loads more storage space. And while it sits lower to the ground than the five seat Scenic version – as much as 53mm when fully loaded – it nevertheless gives the impression of an elevated SUV. Stylistically it still shares the same distinctive
diamond nose badge and swept back grille as the smaller Scenic but dramatic two-tone colour combinations and generously sized wheel-arches with 20-inch alloy wheels make it one of the most dramatic looking MPVs currently available.
Other clever ideas for making the Grand Scenic even more family friendly include front and rear under-floor lidded storage spots, an additional rear view mirror to help keep an eye on what the kids are up to, a spacious central sliding armrest / storage console, and a spring-loaded drawer in place of the traditional glove box. Seatback trays for the kids’ food and split and side folding seats add to both leg and luggage space. The Grand Scenic is available with two

LOCAL ANSWER petrol and no fewer than six diesel engines and depending on the version offers up to 80mpg and very low emissions. Renault has a reputation for safety that few other car manufacturers can match. The Grand Scenic comes with a comprehensive suite of kit including six airbags, stability control, active emergency braking with pedestrian detection, emergency brake assist, tyre pressure monitoring and two Isofix points in the rear. You also get lane-departure warning, traffic sign recognition, hill-hold assist and automatic headlight beam adjustment. In crash tests by Euro NCAP, the five-seat Scenic performed well, earning a full five-star rating overall, including an impressive 90% score for adult protection and an 80% rating for child protection. Most versions of the Grand Scenic come well equipped. Even the entry-level Expression+ provides dual zone climate control, four powered windows, an electronic parking
brake, LED running lights, cruise control and a 7.0-inch touch-screen infotainment system that incorporates Bluetooth and a DAB radio. The Dynamique Nav adds more features, including front- and rear-parking sensors, rear seat trays, a sliding centre console, rear reading lights, sun blinds for the rear windows, hands-free entry and start up, and sat-nav. In my humble opinion it’s a great car, but since I’ve already admitted to being a bit biased perhaps you should go and try it for yourself. I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.

THE JURY’S MOST DEFINITELY OUT
S
tarting the season with three unbeaten games and following that up (at the time of writing) with three consecutive defeats suggests a certain degree of consistency but it’s the sort we can do without! What the games so far have positively indicated, however, is that the jury is most definitely still out on some of Aitor Karanka’s summer signings. Karanka has stated that if Victor Valdes was the Valdes of a few seasons ago we would have had to pay millions for him. Perhaps that statement underlines the truth. He isn’t the player he was and personally I’d rather have seen Dimi given the opportunity that last season’s performances merited. There seems to be a bit of a blinkered attitude towards Konstantopoulos that meant he had to fight his way above Thomas Mejias last season and this season he finds himself in third place to what – on the evidence of their performances so far are a couple of very ordinary goalkeepers. While we were pretty much outclassed against Everton most of us felt that at least two of the goals were a result of Valdes being stuck to the floor and not attacking the ball as Dimi did last season. The Lukaku ‘goal’ (he didn’t even touch it) was a farce with Valdes adopting a statuesque position from which he didn’t move towards the ball at any point so didn’t touch it either. Perhaps he may return to the Valdes of old but in the meantime I remain utterly unconvinced. It’s hard to criticise Alvaro Negredo’s efforts so far because he hasn’t really had any support or service, but when Karanka finally decided
to give Jordan Rhodes his Premiership debut and the chance to form a dual front striking partnership against Spurs Karanka astonishingly brought Negredo off and put Stuani alongside him instead. Conversely, that double substitution gave Adama Traori the opportunity to fly at the Spurs defence and he did it magnificently on three of four occasions. He has to have more opportunities to do the same. De Roon finally played a full game but to be fair it’s hard to remember anything he actually did against Spurs, and the way Heung MinSon motored around Calum Chambers for his second goal also suggests that his place in the team owed much to our promise to Arsene Wenger that he would get game time. Ayala was our best player last season and it’s hard to see the reason for not giving him the opportunity to repeat those excellent performances. If we’re giving Valdes plenty of time we owe it to Ayala to do the same for him. Incidentally, all the indications that ‘Big Sam’ is having Ben Gibson watched for an England spot are hopefully true because so far he has been one of the best performers and deserves to be looked at. He was excellent against Spurs and added his first goal of the season to boot. Sadly, it makes you wonder after Chelsea centre back Gary Cahill’s performances in the last couple of weeks whether a load more money is heading our way in January. I hope not because we need local talent showing the foreign imports just how much this club means to so many of us! That was best illustrated by Maricio

Well done everyone in the posh seats for joining the Red Faction in giving the team every possible support. Keep it up! After all this seemingly negative comment, though, I still feel we have enough to stay well clear of the bottom three this season. Karanka’s already stated that games against the likes of Everton and Spurs are not what we’re really about this season and that the fixtures against our apparent peers in the Premiership are the ones on which we have to concentrate. Sadly, that gives the players some sort of ‘get-out’ when they’re playing top teams and we can do without that! We need them believing that whoever they are playing, three points are at stake and available to both teams. I draw your attention to Bournemouth 1 Everton 0. They didn’t give Everton the respect we did and got what they deserved because of it. Let’s hope we can start doing the same!
