In The Garden
A
s Christmas approaches, our to-do lists don’t often contain gardening tasks at this time of year.
Luckily, you can take it a little easier this month without any risk to your garden; maintenance is the most important thing until spring. Of course, if you are looking to keep up the pace of your gardening, don’t worry, there are still plenty of smaller jobs to do! Clearing borders of dead or dying plants helps create tidy displays, showing off those still in bloom. The spent debris makes a great soil improver for next year, so get it rotting down. Prune harshly to improve the shape of your trees and shrubs, look out for flaws such as split or broken branches, and make sure you cut them back so they are healthier next year.
down and used to rejuvenate your soil with nutrients. If you’re looking for something a little more natural, green manures like clover or rye are great for improving soil nature’s way! Mulch requires very little work, and is great for applying to the roots of established or flowering plants. Let earth worms do all the hard work; they will eventually drag and blend the mulch into top soil. Don’t let ivy be a pest; it may seem like any other climbing plant usefully covering your bare walls and fences. Unfortunately no matter how much you try and keep it in bounds, ivy always has a way of escaping! It has a habit of smothering other plants and annoying neighbours, so make sure you keep cutting back those escaping shoots or get rid of it altogether.
Don’t rely on bought garden compost; it’s the perfect time of year to create your own! Keep any plant cuttings and kitchen scraps, mix them together and allow them to rot down ready to be used next spring.
Be aware of pests and diseases, one of the most prevalent diseases this time of year is root rot. Stop root rot by placing pots in the rain shadow of a wall or fence and lift them off the ground on pot feet or large stones to let the moisture drain out.
Leaves and manure are great for creating an alternative to compost; leaf mould can act as soil coverage during those harsh winter months and manure can be rotted

Protection December is all about protection for your plants and garden wildlife. Protect ponds by catching any fallen leaves with a small net and trimming off any dying or tatty foliage so they don’t pollute the water. You may wake up on those winter mornings to find your pond covered in ice, fish can withstand such low temperatures but can’t survive too much in the water. Float a tennis ball on the surface to stop ice taking over your pond and keep your fish and pond wildlife safe!

If you are extremely worried about some of your tender plants, the best thing to do is move them inside when the weather becomes more severe. The cold weather doesn’t just affect your plants, don’t let your containers crack as the frost starts to set in, wrap them with bubble polythene or fleece. If you have lots of containers pack them together and wrap protection around as a group. Your garden furniture is also at risk, cover furniture with polythene sheeting to protect it from becoming damp and possibly rusty. Remember to replenish and add water for birds to drink out of. Watch out for bird nests when pruning. Many gardeners assume that birds aren’t hungry when they look plump; birds actually fluff up their feathers to minimize the loss of heat from their bodies when they are seriously hungry.

WINTER TYRES ARE THEY WORTH THE BOTHER?
A
s soon as the temperature drops and there are signs of snow and frost a friend of ours books her car in to have winter tyres fitted. I have to admit to having strong reservations about the benefits of that, since this country - and last year was a great example - rarely has enough snow to create the kind of problems that would make the annual investment worthwhile. Or does it? We decided to investigate the pros and cons and are happy to pass on our findings. There’s no doubt it’s a debatable subject and therefore it’s actually worth examining what exactly is a ‘winter tyre’ and what are its benefits? In this country the type of tyre that can safely be used in winter is more accurately classed as a ‘cold weather’ tyre, recognisable by the snowflake symbol. They are manufactured from a tread rubber compound (high silica content) with a tread pattern specifically designed
to retain flexibility in low temperatures (below +7C) and give good braking and traction performance on snow and ice as well as on wet roads in cold conditions. These are produced using a softer compound than the ones we normally use which means that they still provide a grip in those temperatures below 7 degrees centigrade. Our every day tyres are of a harder construction and while that means they soften in higher temperatures and provide a good grip most of the time, once the temperature falls below the magic 7 degrees centigrade they provide less grip on the road. The way the tread patterns differ on the cold weather tyre is that fine grooves are cut into each tread block to enable the tyre to improve its bite into snow. But let’s be honest, in recent years we’ve hardly had any snow, so is it worth the expense to furnish your car with a whole new set of tyres just for the odd shower?
PAGE 18 | Please mention ‘The Local Answer Ingleby Barwick’ when calling advertisers
LOCAL ANSWER
Perhaps the answer lies in the fact that these tyres are not just built for snow, but create a much safer grip in icy or cold, wet weather and during January and February we tend to get quite of few of those sort of conditions. Let’s also examine the expense involved. If you are using your winter tyres it obviously means your normal tyres are safely tucked up in the garage not being used and therefore not adding to their mileage. That means that both they - and obviously your winter tyres - will last twice as long anyway as they are only used for half the year. The only additional expense, therefore, is the initial cost of the winter tyres and the cost of having them changed twice a year. Why, you might ask, don’t the manufacturers come up with a tyre that can do both? Well, they do, actually, and this is called an ‘all season’ tyre. Its aim is to give you decent grip in all weathers but that would suggest that because it’s not built for specific climatic conditions it can’t possibly offer the best results for whatever the weather throws at you at any given time. That means that it isn’t as good as having two specialist tyres and switching between them from season to season because you are then giving yourself the perfect tyre for the time of year. We don’t really get the kind of extremes other countries have to endure, of course, but there are nevertheless times throughout the winter when you need all the road grip you can get! It’s really a matter of personal opinion and circumstances, but for anyone who relies on their car with high mileage throughout the year it seems to make sense to give yourselves the safest
possible conditions when you’re driving. The fact that winter tyres not only reduce stopping distances in snowy and icy conditions but also help with cornering and avoiding the skidding others cars experience is a pretty good reason why you should perhaps give it serious thought. Whatever your decision, though, do drive carefully this winter and stay safe regardless of the conditions!

Recipe
CHRISTMAS CAKE This traditional rich fruit Christmas cake is moist, loaded with nuts and fruit that have been fortified with sherry and rum, and warmingly spiced with cinnamon. INGREDIENTS: 250g currants 250g raisins 250g sultanas 90g glacé cherries 50g chopped candied citrus peel 60g sliced almonds Finely grated zest of ½ a lemon & ½ an orange 275g plain flour
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon ¾ teaspoon ground mixed spice 225g butter 225g light brown sugar 4 medium free range eggs 1 tablespoon of black treacle (this is optional, it gives the cake a darker appearance and a deeper treacle taste) 2 tablespoons each of sherry and dark rum
METHOD: Preheat oven to gas mark 2 or 150 °C (130 °C for a fan assisted oven). Grease and double line a deep 8”/20cm cake tin using non-stick baking paper. Fold a 27“/69cm length of brown paper to form a strip that stands 5cm above the depth of your baking tin. Place the paper around the outside of the tin and tie it in place with string. This extra brown paper will protect the cake edges while baking. Gather, weigh and prepare the dried ingredients. Sort through the currants, raisins and sultanas and remove any stalks. Wash and dry the cherries and chop them in half. Place the dried fruit, cherries, candied citrus peel and grated zest in a large bowl and mix well. Add 1 tablespoon each of sherry and rum and leave to stand. If you have the time, the fruit can be prepared the evening before and allowed to
absorb the sherry and rum overnight. Sift the flour and spices into a separate bowl. Break the eggs into a jug, and whisk lightly with a fork. In another big bowl cream the sugar and butter until light, fluffy and pale in colour. If you are using treacle add it now. Add the whisked egg to the creamed butter and sugar a little at a time, along with a tablespoon of the sifted flour. Using a metal spoon, gently fold in the remaining flour. Then stir in the dried fruits and almonds. Combine well. Spoon the cake mixture into the pre-lined cake tin. Use a wet spoon to ensure that the mixture is flat, level and smooth and that all the fruit is covered, to prevent it catching when baking. Place a 9 or 10” square piece of non-stick baking paper over the rim of the cake tin to protect the top of the cake whilst baking.
PAGE 20 | Please mention ‘The Local Answer Ingleby Barwick’ when calling advertisers
LOCAL ANSWER Fold a piece of brown paper several times to make a nine or ten inch square, put it onto a baking sheet and place the full cake tin on top. The paper will protect the bottom of the cake from burning, and the baking tray will make the cake easier to remove from the oven. Place the tray and cake on a shelf in the center of the oven. Bake for two hours then turn the oven down gas mark 1 or 140 °c (120 °c for a fan assisted oven). Bake for a further two hours. After four hours, remove the cake from the oven and test with a metal skewer as baking times can vary. If the skewer comes out clean the cake is done. If not return to the oven and retest every 10 minutes until done. Remove the cake from the oven and allow it to cool in the tin, with a clean tea towel placed over the top to keep the moisture in. Once the cake is completely cold, turn it out of the tin. Prick the top of the cake with a sterile skewer. Pour on the remaining sherry and rum, allowing the alcohol to soak into the holes before wrapping in greaseproof paper and an outer layer of foil.

Humour A HUMOROUS LOOK AT CHRISTMAS & NEW YEAR We know it’s the nicest and happiest time of the year, but Christmas and New Year also throw up some humorous little stories. Here are just a few for you to enjoy! It’s probably not true but there’s a story going round that when Good King Wenceslas ordered a pizza he always wanted a ‘deep pan - crisp and even!’ Christmas dinner was great this year,’ said one little girl to another. ‘We had Grandma and Grandad.’ ‘Crikey,’ said her friend. ‘We only had turkey.’ The vicar was walking down the street one Christmas eve when he saw a small boy trying to press the doorbell of a house across the street. Unfortunately the doorbell was too high for him to reach. After watching the boy’s efforts for some time, the vicar walks over to the little fellow and, placing his hand kindly on the child’s shoulder, leaned over and gave the doorbell a solid ring. Crouching down to the little lad’s level, the vicar smiled benevolently and asked, ‘And now what, my little man?’ - to which the little lad grinned broadly and said ‘Now we run like hell!’ Daisy and her thirteen-year-old sister Mary had been fighting a great deal during the last year. This often can happen when you combine a strong-willed twoyear-old, who is sure she is always right, with a young adolescent. Their parents, trying to take advantage of Daisy’s new found interest in Santa Claus, reminded the two-year-old that Santa was watching and he was unhappy when he saw children argue and fight. This had little impact on Daisy who really didn’t understand. ‘I’ll just have to tell Santa about your misbehaviour,’ the mother said as she picked up the phone and dialled. Daisy‘s eyes grew big as her mother asked, ‘Mrs. Claus?’ (it was really Daisy and Mary’s
aunt) can you please put Santa on the line. Daisy’s mouth dropped even further open as her mother described to Santa (the girls’ uncle) how the two-year-old was acting. When her mother told Daisy that Santa wanted to talk to her, she reluctantly took the phone. ‘Santa,’ speaking in a deep voice, explained to her how there would be no presents on Christmas morning for children who fought with their sisters. He would be watching, and he expected things to be better from now on. Daisy, now even more wide eyed, solemnly nodded to each of Santa’s remarks and silently hung the phone up when he was done. After a short while, her mother (trying hard not to laugh at being so clever) asked Daisy what Santa had to say to her. In almost a whisper, she sadly but matter-of-factly stated, ‘he said he won’t be bringing Mary any toys this year.’ We know a man who claims that anyone who thinks alcohol is a depressant obviously isn’t drinking enough of it!
And finally, some New Year’s Observations: 1. A New Year’s resolution is something that goes in one year and out the other.
PAGE 26 | Please mention ‘The Local Answer Ingleby Barwick’ when calling advertisers
LOCAL ANSWER 2. My New Year’s resolution is to be more optimistic by keeping my cup half-full with either rum, vodka, or whiskey. 3. My New Year’s resolution is to stop hanging out with people who ask me about my New Year’s resolutions. 4. People treat New Year’s Eve like some sort of life-changing event, but it’s pretty certain to assume that if your life sucked last year, it’s probably still going to suck tomorrow. 5. May all your troubles last as long as your New Year resolutions..... 6. Again, Dear Lord, my prayer for 2017 is a FAT bank account and a THIN body. Please don’t mix it up again like you did this year. 7. Remember you don’t have to worry about initially breaking your New Year resolutions. You can re-set them on January 14th (Orthodox New Year) and February 8th (Chinese New Year). Have a wonderful Christmas and very best wishes for 2017.

Football
NOW WE REALLY CAN LOOK FORWARD WITH TRUE OPTIMISM!
I
f, at the start of November, someone had offered me five points from the matches against Arsenal, Man City, Chelsea and Bournemouth I would have ripped their hands off! Yet a superb string of defensive performances have provided tremendous results against really class opposition and showed us all that this Middlesbrough side has a great deal to offer. Who would have thought this time last year that we would be contemplating an away game against Champions Leicester with total optimism? There’s a real belief around the town that we can not only get something from that game but actually go on and win it (by the time you read this you’ll know the result and I might look a bit of a clown, but that’s football!) But there’s always a downside to any ‘Boro optimism and on this occasion it’s unfortunately the ‘goals for’ column. Karanka has changed his system from his favoured 4-2-3-1 formation to a belief that using three in midfield is a better bet in the Premiership. While that system might provide the ability to contain the attacking threats of the top teams it also means that we are likely to get even less goal scoring opportunities than ever. Against Chelsea we had two reasonable chances but both Traore and Ramirez were unable to hit the target. Negredo did brilliantly to give himself an opportunity but – as on a number of occasions already this season – his final shot was week. So what does Karanka do? It’s been said many times already that Negredo
has very little support up front so replacing him with one of the other two options – Rhodes or Nugent – would seem pointless because they wouldn’t have any support either. But since both have scored consistently throughout their careers and Negredo has missed all his chances since the first game of the season (and that was off his shoulder), why not give one of the others a try? Fortunately, I’m not being paid millions to find the answer to that question which is perhaps just as well because I’m not entirely sure there is a ready-made solution. But let’s look on the bright side. Unlike the previous string of fixtures we now face the real test against teams who are considered our peers. Being honest, results against the likes of Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea are not going to define our season. That we got two away points from them is true icing on the cake but the real crunch now comes against teams in a similar position to ourselves. Five of our next six matches come into that category. That we are unable to compete for the best players in the world means we have to rely on bargains from abroad and the consistent supply from ‘Boro’s wonderful academy. That is really where we hope to negotiate safety and I sincerely believe we can. And on the subject of the Academy, I’m very proud to say that one of my best friends over the past thirty years has been the wonderful David Parnaby. I’ve known him since he was a P.E teacher at Spennymoor Comprehensive and we have – with a number of our mutual friends – enjoyed many weekends away in the Lake

LOCAL ANSWER District, London, Pickering and the war fields of France and Belgium. We also completed the Lyke Wake Walk together a few years ago. Only a week or two ago he and I had a magnificent ‘Whisky Blending Experience’ in a superb York venue that was a birthday present from my daughter. It shows how much my kids think of him that she made it clear that the only person who should accompany me on such a great day was David Parnaby. That we share many happy memories and two wonderful families has made us very close over the years and I would like to take this opportunity to wish him true happiness in his retirement. I am more aware than most how much he has put into his role at the academy and I know that Middlesbrough FC will find it extremely difficult to find a successor who will be able to demonstrate the same enthusiasm, willingness, knowledge and ability he has given them for the best part of twenty years. Their loss, however, is going to be his friends’ gain and we all look forward to many more great weekends with a truly superb bloke. Happy retirement Parno!
