R
ecycle your Christmas tree by shredding or taking it to any voluntary run organisations who will dispose of it for you. Remove any snow from greenhouse and conservatory roofs and also from tree branches and shake it off shrubs to prevent breakages. Cut off old leaves from hellebores to expose the flowers and mulch underneath with bark or grit to stop the flowers being splashed with mud when it rains. If the weather is very cold try grouping planted containers together next to a south facing wall for extra protection. Check that pots close to walls are getting adequate rain water and if not water on a regular basis. Check your greenhouse insulation is still in place and that your heater, if you have one, is working properly. Sow sweet peas in long tubes and put in a heated propagator. Once they have germinated they can be moved to a cold greenhouse or cold frame. Ventilate the greenhouse on mild and sunny days but don’t forget to close down well before dark.
On fine dry days walk around your garden and inspect that all is as it should be e.g. no plants have come loose at the base with wind rock, tree ties are not broken, tree stakes are not loose, no branches have snapped and left jagged edges where disease could enter etc
Lawns New turf can be laid in mild weather but not if the ground is either frozen or water logged. Lawn edges can also be repaired to save time later on. You can also deal with humps or hollows in your lawn now. Cut a cross with a spade and carefully peel back the turf. Either remove or add some soil to the required level and put back the turf, pushing the cut edges together. Keep off the lawn as much as possible during bad weather, either cold or rain.
Fruit and Vegetables Plant new fruit trees or bushes if the ground is not frozen or waterlogged. Cut down and remove the stumps of any old fruit trees that are not now worth their keep. Prune currants and gooseberries. Place cloches over strawberry plants for an earlier crop.

LOCAL ANSWER Start to force rhubarb by placing a large pot, bucket or special forcing jar over the crown. Sow broad beans in pots and place in a cold frame for planting out in the spring. For early crops of lettuce, radish, spring onions, etc, sow the seeds in trays or pots and germinate on a windowsill or in a heated propagator. Once germinated the seedlings can then be put in a greenhouse for planting out next month. Onions grown from seed can also be germinated now in the same way but do not plant out until March.

Wildlife As most of the berries and seeds will be gone from the garden by now it is most important that you keep the bird table regularly topped up. At this time of year they really like anything fatty such as meat, cheese, cooking fat, coconut or any other nuts that have not been salted. Some birds such as thrushes and blackbirds prefer to eat on the ground so if you have any fruit that is past its best these could be left in an open part of the garden. Keep the bird bath topped up with fresh water and make sure it is not frozen. If your pond is frozen over hold a saucepan with boiling water on top of the ice and wait until it melts a hole. Do not smash through the ice as this will harm fish and wildlife.

The best parts of the interior, however, is its obvious material quality and its immaculate finish. Recipe
EASY SCONES INGREDIENTS: 250g self raising flour 1 teaspoon baking powder, a generous pinch of salt 60g butter chopped into cubes 150ml milk METHOD: You can add cheese (strong cheese is good but any works) for cheese scones, dried fruit or glace cherries for fruity scones or leave them plain if you’re that way inclined. Sieve together the flour, baking powder and the salt (or if you don’t have a sieve, just mix it all round in a mixing bowl). Add the butter to the flour mix and using your fingertips, rub them together until it looks like really, really fine breadcrumbs. Add your fruit or cheese at this point if you’re going to. Use about three hands of raisins in the fruity batch and about 150g grated cheese in cheese scones but you can use more or less depending on what you fancy and what you have in. Make a hole in the mixture and pour in about half the milk. Use a spoon to mix together and add more milk as you need to in order to make a dough.
When the mixture starts to resemble a dough then you can get it out of the bowl and pop it on a floured surface and give it a quick knead. The trick is to handle it as little as possible. Roll out the dough until it’s about 2.5cm (an inch) thick and then either use a cookie cutter or a glass to cut out your scones then transfer them to a lightly greased baking tray.
Brush a little milk on top to glaze them and if you’re making cheese scones you can also top with a little grated cheese. Pop them in the oven for around 15-20 minutes at around 200c. Always slice one in half when you think they’re ready to make sure they’re cooked through.

Humour GARDENING - IT’S NOT ALWAYS HARD WORK!
P
erhaps January isn’t the best time to think about gardening but we decided that since it’s one of the few months of the year when you don’t have to worry about all the work that needs to be done it’s the perfect time to look at the more humorous side of what is really a lovely hobby. Enjoy! The vicar was congratulating one of his parishioners on the way he had transformed a piece of waste land into a really beautiful garden. ‘It’s wonderful,’ said the vicar, ‘what man can achieve with the help of the Almighty.’‘That’s true, vicar, ‘said the man ‘but you should have seen what it was like when the Almighty had it all to himself!’ ‘Sooner or later,’ said a woman to her husband as they looked out onto their garden, ‘you’re going to have to make a proper scarecrow to keep the birds off the flower beds.’ ‘What’s wrong with the one we’ve got now?’ he asked. ‘Nothing,’ replied his wife, ‘but my mother’s arms are getting tired.’ The man who had the best garden in the street was asked by one of his neighbours what the secret of his lovely garden was. The man replied that it was all down to water. ‘Really,’ said his neighbour, ‘What sort of water?’‘Well,’ said the gardener, ‘It’s mostly sweat!’ Two men were walking down their street from the pub when it started snowing. ‘Great’ said one of the men, ‘I love it when it snows.’ ‘Why?’ asked his neighbour. ‘Because,’ replied the first, ‘when there’s four inches of snow on the ground is the only time my garden looks as good as everybody else’s.’ A little boy was taken to his granddad’s allotment so he could help his granddad dig
up some potatoes for dinner. After they’d dug up three roots and got enough potatoes they headed for home. ‘Did you enjoy that?’ asked the granddad. ‘Well,’ said the little lad, ‘It was all right, but I don’t know why you buried them in the first place!’ The best definition of a garden we ever heard was that ‘It’s a thing of beauty and a job forever!’ (We have to thank John Keats for that one!) Two guys who had neighbouring allotments entered their potatoes in the local show. One is declared the winner and immediately swaggers over to his neighbour and boasts ‘I’m not surprised I won, to be honest, because I thought your potatoes looked a little puny in comparison to mine’‘That’s true,’ said the other gardener, ‘but I grew them to fit my mouth, not yours!’ The manager of a garden centre was walking round when he noticed one of his salesmen in conversation with a prospective customer so he sidled across to hear what was being said. He was astounded to hear the salesman saying ‘No, we haven’t had any of that for a long time and I have no idea when we’ll be getting any more.’ Once the customer left, the manager angrily walked over to the salesman to give him a telling off. ‘Never let me hear you say you can’t get something for a customer. Whatever they want we can always get it on order and deliver it, do you understand?’ The assistant nodded . ‘Anyway,’ said the manager, ‘what did he want?’ The assistant looked at him smugly and said ‘Rain.’ Dad found his four year old son Harry chewing on a slug in the garden. After the initial surge of disgust his Dad said ‘But Harry, what did it taste like?’‘Well Dad,’ said Harry, ‘It tasted a bit like a worm.’

LOCAL ANSWER Two old ladies were sitting on a park bench outside the local Town where a flower show was taking place. The thin one leaned over and said, “We never have any fun anymore. For five pounds I’d take my clothes off and streak through that stupid flower show!” “You’re on!” said the other old lady, holding up a £5 note. The first little old lady slowly fumbled her way out of her clothes. Completely naked, she streaked (as fast as an old lady can) through the front door of the flower show. Waiting outside, her friend soon heard a huge commotion inside the hall, followed by loud applause and shrill whistling. A NEW YEAR - A NEW APPROACH AND HOPEFULLY NEW CLUBS FOR TWO EXCELLENT PROFESSIONALS
T
he most difficult thing about being a football manager is that whatever decisions you make and whatever team you select there will be a percentage of fans who think you’re right and an even larger percentage who think you’re wrong. Leaving out Adama Traore for the Hull game, for instance, was a decision that was met with enormous scepticism from many, yet it was a cross from Victor Fischer - his direct replacement - that ended up winning us the game. And while that might suggest a piece of exceptional managerial acumen from Aitor Karanka there are many who would still query why Traore wasn’t brought on later in the game when Hull had finally decided to move out of their own half and open up a bit. His pace would surely have been their biggest problem. ‘Boro, by then of course, had typically dropped back twenty yards once they’d scored and that allowed Hull to create genuine goal scoring opportunities. It’s something we ‘Boro fans have seen many times before and indeed have come to expect. The reason I am bringing this up now is that deadlines for this edition make the Hull game the last I can comment on and anything after that would be pure speculation. That’s why now I’ve had my little bleat about a game we actually won - I would like to put a more positive slant on the Karanka decision making to date. We’ll never know the truth of the Jordan Rhodes signing (unless Karanka reveals it in his autobiography in about twenty years time and by then we probably won’t care) but his
treatment of the player since he was signed doesn’t really leave a lot to the imagination. I feel sorry for Jordan Rhodes because he has never been given any sort of chance to prove himself. In the only game he started in the Premiership he played really well but was subsequently dropped and has since been on and off the bench with no chance to show what he can do. David Nugent has also been given little or no opportunity to prove himself even though he - like Rhodes - has been a consistent goal scorer all his career. Yet here we are (at the time of writing anyway) in a reasonable position that - were this the end of the season would be greeted as real success by both fans and pundits alike. Coming up to the Premiership and holding your own is not something many clubs accomplish, so the fact we’ve done it so far speaks volumes for the way Aitor has not only created exceptional organisation but has also instilled a wonderful combination of discipline and team spirit. If he can maintain that throughout the season we’ll continue to climb the table - especially now that now we’ve overcome the early season jitters that saw us lose points to teams that were obviously not as good as us. (Stoke, Crystal Palace, West Brom, Leicester City and - dare I say - Arsenal, are perfect examples and were performances that should have brought us at least an extra nine points.) So, by the time you read this the January window will have opened and with any luck both Nugent and Rhodes will be sought after by clubs who recognise their goal scoring prowess and are willing to give them regular first team

To see them both being ignored week after week despite a twelve goal drought from the first choice striker is something none of us have been happy to see, but the points tally and our position in the table demand that we have to trust Aitor implicitly and respect his judgement. There aren’t many who would have predicted some of the tremendous results we’ve enjoyed so far. Those that did could have made a small fortune at William Hill! Whatever’s happened since I wrote this, though, I’m pretty sure we’ve continued to make a good fist of things and we should be starting the new year in a position that gives our survival hopes real credence. And despite the beliefs of the extra fifteen thousand or so supporters we’ve suddenly attracted in the last twelve months, both I - and the other fifteen thousand faithful who have stuck with ‘Boro through thick and very, very thin over many years will consider that a real achievement. So let’s just stick with Aitor and his beliefs. If we do I think the future looks very bright indeed! Have a great 2017 and a wonderful end to the season!
