lant spring flowering bulbs such as daffodils, crocus, muscari and scilla but not tulips. Continue with dead heading and weeding so that you extend the flowering season and keep soil nutrients and moisture for your plants and not the weeds. If you have any large clumps of perennials or alpines then now is a good time to split and divide. Most plants can be separated into many smaller pieces which can all be replanted or given away. Discard the very old centre portion as this will not make a good new plant. Plant out new spring bedding such as wallflowers, primula and bellis. Bring inside any tender perennials such as fuchsia or geraniums before the first frosts. If you have somewhere frost free they can be kept over winter or if not then take cuttings. After the first frost lift cannas and dahlias or if you live in a sheltered spot you can try to leave them in the ground but cover them with straw or bracken.
one. If the edge of a lawn has broken down then cut out a patch round it of about 1 foot square and turn the turf round so that the broken edge is now next to the lawn and the good edge is facing out. The bare patch can then be sprinkled with fine soil or compost and then seeded. It is a good time to scarify (rake out all the thatch and debris with a long tined rake) and aerate (make holes all over the lawn with a fork and brush in compost). It is hard work but well worth doing as the lawn looks much better and it prevents problems such as moss and water logging. After scarifying and aerating put on an autumn feed that is high in potassium. Don’t use a summer feed as you will get soft growth which will be prone to disease. Finally top dress the lawn with loam or sand working it in with a still brush or the back of a rake. If this all sounds like too much hard work you can buy scarifiers and aeraters to make life easier.

Remove any diseased fruits to stop the spread of disease. At the end of the month wrap grease band around the trunks of fruit trees to prevent the wingless female moths from climbing up to lay their eggs. Continue to sow over wintering seeds such as spinach, turnip, lettuce and onions. Any outdoor tomatoes should be picked before frosts and brought indoors to ripen. Leave them on the vine and place the whole truss in a greenhouse or on a windowsill. Lift onions and shallots but do not bend over at the neck as they wont store as well. If the weather is not wet leave them to dry on the soil otherwise bring them into a dry shed. Lift all root vegetables and store in a cool, dark and dry place. Leave parsnips in the ground as they are better tasting after being frosted.
Wildlife Clean out bird baths and keep them topped up with water. As the breeding season for birds is not quite over it is still not safe to put out peanuts and other large bird food but continue with small bird food. If you have the room put a pile of twigs or logs in a quiet corner of the garden as these will become home to lots of wildlife. To make it an attractive area plant around the logs with primroses, ferns etc. Do not cut back any plants with seed heads, such as sunflowers, as they provide a useful source of food for birds. Make or buy a hedgehog hibernation box and leave it under a pile of dead leaves at the back of garden where it will be undisturbed. If making it yourself add a tunnel to the entrance hole to stop predators from entering the nest.

THE NEW HONDA JAZZ - AN ABSOLUTE TARDIS!
W
ith more than five million sold since its launch in 2001, the Honda Jazz has proved itself over and over again. While big brothers Civic and NSX Supercar attract more interest to the Honda Group, sales of the Jazz have been an integral part of Honda’s financial stability over the past seventeen years. Much of its popularity can be attributed to its similarity to a mini-MPV, and the attraction to older drivers who appreciate the easy entry via wide-opening doors, the simplicity of the drive and the reliability over a long period of time. Not satisfied to sit on its laurels, however, Honda has launched this version as literally all-new and the hope is that it will appeal more than ever before to the younger driver. Main differences are a new chassis using Honda’s Global Compact Platform that includes a new front suspension designed to improve ride comfort and satisfaction. The longer wheelbase also gives increased interior space - it’s 95mm longer than its predecessor - meaning that a couple of tall adults will sit comfortably in the back with a
third able to squeeze in if necessary. You’ll also have those clever Magic Seat bases which you can either flip up to allow bigger loads across the rear seats or you can fold then down completely to leave a fully flat extended load deck. A further advantage of the new design is the additional sound absorbing material behind the dashboard which reduces wind and road noise considerably. Perhaps the only downside to the new model is that initially it will be limited to a single choice of engine. A 1.3-litre petrol is the spec available but at least you can choose between manual and automatic. Not particularly impressive if you’re looking for something truly sporty but it nevertheless offers an extremely smooth performance. To compensate, the six speed manual gearbox has closer ratios so the gear changing is incredibly efficient. For anyone preferring more clout, Honda are preparing a second launch next year of a 1.5-litre i-VTEC engine 130PS. With such a compact car it hardly needs saying that it’s a great little city car, but
PAGE 18 | Please mention ‘The Local Answer Ingleby Barwick’ when calling advertisers
See Page 30 for our Index of Advertisers we’re saying it anyway. Loads of grip and balance, accurate power steering and great economy are all integral necessities of this type of car and the new Jazz provides them with aplomb. The ride is definitely improved and even with the larger 16inch alloys it takes speed bumps without a problem. Internally, the fit and finish is excellent, with a well laid out dashboard boasting clear dials, gloss-black surfaces and a TFT screen adjacent to the speedometer to display all the driving data you require. Standard steering wheel levers give you good control and cover the phone and stereo as well. A choice of five trim levels allow you to personalise your Jazz – S, SE, SE Navi, EX and EX Navi. The entry-level trim comes with cruise control, Bluetooth, and Honda’s magic seat and active city braking systems. Upgrade to SE and SE Navi and you also get Honda’s Connect touch screen infotainment system and drive assist pack, with the latter
also including a Garmin-powered sat-nav. The range-topping EX and EX Navi also give you alloy wheels, front fog lights and a rear view camera as standard, as well as sat nav as part of the bundle. The Jazz has always demonstrated excellent economy and the new version is just as efficient. CO2 emissions start from an impressive 106g/km while Honda claim a fuel economy of 61.4mpg. Both mean running costs won’t break the bank! All models other than entry S trim will help protect you with a standard safety package that includes a forward city alert, lane departure warning, automatic main beam and traffic sign recognition. Prices start from £16,235 So, if you’re looking for a small, efficient car with amazing internal space and good boot size you don’t need to look any further. It’s a great little car on the outside and a comfortable, spacious car on the inside. What more could you ask for?

Healthy Eating
HEALTHY APPLE & BLACKBERRY CRUMBLE
E
veryone loves a dessert, but shop bought ones can contain a lot of fat and sugar. Making a pudding with fruit gives you the best of both worlds - a sweet that is healthier. This recipe includes oats (which are good for lowering cholesterol) and eating apples & blackberries (which are good sources of fibre, vitamins and minerals). It’s blackberry season now so you can get out and pick your own for free, or buy frozen ones.
Ingredients: 7 eating apples dessertspoon sugar 100g blackberries 50ml water For the crumble: 60g porridge oats 120g plain flour 40g muscovado brown sugar 75g low fat spread
METHOD: Heat the oven to 400 degrees or gas mark 6. Peel and slice the apples. Put into a saucepan with the sugar and 50ml water. Cook until softened. Mix in blackberries and leave to cool. Prepare the crumble: Mix oats, flour and sugar. Add the low fat spread and rub it into the flour mixture using fingertips, until it looks like breadcrumbs. Put the apple mixture into an ovenproof dish and top with the crumble. Cook 25 minutes or until golden. Serve with low fat custard or crème fraiche. Healthy tips: Mix sunflower seeds into the crumble mix to make it healthier. Make your own custard using custard powder and semi-skimmed or soy milk - add enough sugar to sweeten - will contain less sugar than shop-bought.

INSULTS AS AN ART FORM Unlike the sad situation that exists today where insults tend to be delivered with a plethora of four letter words, there was a time when directing an insult towards someone was almost an art form. Here are a number of excellent examples delivered by a number of famous people...
“He is a self-made man and worships his creator.” - John Bright
A member of Parliament to Disraeli: “Sir, you will either die on the gallows or of some unspeakable disease.” “That depends, Sir,” said Disraeli, “whether I embrace your policies or your mistress.”
“I’ve just learned about his illness. Let’s hope it’s nothing trivial.” - Irvin S. Cobb
“He had delusions of adequacy.” - Walter Kerr
“He is simply a shiver looking for a spine to run up.” - Paul Keating
“He has all the virtues I dislike and none of the vices I admire.” - Winston Churchill
“In order to avoid being called a flirt, she always yielded easily.” - Charles, Count Talleyrand
“I have never killed a man, but I have read many obituaries with great pleasure.” Clarence Darrow “I feel so miserable without you; it’s almost like having you here.” - Stephen Bishop “Thank you for sending me a copy of your book; I’ll waste no time reading it.” - Moses Hadas
“He has never been known to use a word that might send a reader to the dictionary.” - William Faulkner (about Ernest Hemingway)
“He is not only dull himself; he is the cause of dullness in others.” - Samuel Johnson
“He loves nature in spite of what it did to him.” - Forrest Tucker “Why do you sit there looking like an envelope without any address on it?” - Mark Twain “His mother should have thrown him away and kept the stork.” - Mae West
“I didn’t attend the funeral, but I sent a nice letter saying I approved of it.” - Mark Twain
“Some cause happiness wherever they go; others, whenever they go.” - Oscar Wilde
“He has no enemies, but is intensely disliked by his friends.” - Oscar Wilde
“He uses statistics as a drunken man uses lamp-posts... for support rather than illumination.” - Andrew Lang
“I am enclosing two tickets to the first night of my new play; bring a friend, if you have one.” - George Bernard Shaw to Winston Churchill “Cannot possibly attend first night, will attend second... if there is one.” - Winston Churchill, in response
“He has Van Gogh’s ear for music.” - Billy Wilder “I’ve had a perfectly wonderful evening. But I’m afraid this wasn’t it.” - Groucho Marx How could anyone possibly be offended!

Football
A MIXED START - BUT THERE’S A LOT TO LOOK FORWARD TO
W
hile the start to the season hasn’t been as spectacular as we all hoped, there are definite signs that we are heading in the right direction. Both away games at Wolves and Forest could easily have ended with much more positive results with at least four one-on-ones with goalkeepers being spurned. On another day they would probably have gone in and we may well have been sitting with twelve points instead of six (at the time of writing). One very positive sign that Garry Monk has done good business so far was the Carabao Cup result and performance against Scunthorpe in which the team - showing ten changes from the one that had been used over the first four games - comfortably won with some great movement and three excellent goals. If nothing else it showed that the likes of Lewis Baker and Ashley Fletcher are certainly good enough for a league start. Once again, the Marmite-like Adama
Traore (you either love him or hate him) has shown in the last couple of outings that regardless of many people harping on about his ‘end product’ he has a lot to offer. I would gladly pay to watch his pace and movement any time and he showed against Forest he can frighten defenders to death! Also very impressive on the night was the performance of youngster Marcus Tavernier who certainly didn’t look out of place on his first team debut. Unlike Karanka, it appears that Garry Monk is more than willing to give the kids a try if they look good enough. It all suggests that in the heat of the cramped Championship season we have plenty of options right across the park and when the inevitable injuries and sudden loss of form arrive there are certainly players to come into the important positions. The next week or so (again, at the time of writing) will define what the final squad will be but if no one else comes in and we retain the current players

(though Stewart Downing is the most likely to depart at this point) then I for one would remain quite confident that we will be thereabouts at the end of the season. But there’s a long, long way to go and while the start of the campaign is always fraught with the danger of remarkable upsets (I give you Chelsea v Burnley as a great example), there has been enough to show that we have nothing to fear over the coming months. That somewhat overused word consistency really is the key, but we’ve seen many times in the past that putting three or four good results together makes an enormous difference when you view the league table. Let’s hope they’ll come against Preston, Bolton, Villa and QPR. Good results against those four will set us up nicely!
