Rave Reviews For Izzie

I

zzie Fenny took the decision to open her own salon earlier this year having worked for a salon in Yarm. It is proving to be very successful and is getting rave reviews. She trained at Stockton Riverside College and was awarded student of the year twice on her beauty and nail courses. Izzie qualified to Level 3 in beauty and nails. The salon is located beside the family home on Yarm Road in Eaglescliffe and, as she is always on the premises, is happy to take appointments early morning before people

go to work, or evenings, it is open 7 days a week. Parking is not a problem as you can pull in and park on the drive. This is a unique salon set in beautiful surroundings, offering a wide range of beauty treatments and fabulous nails express, acrylic, gel or normal polish. She has an extensive range of colours, glitters, chromes and stamps. With the party season coming up, book in for all your treatments, you will feel amazing and your nails will be the best at the party! Visit Izzie’s page on instagram.

In The Garden

C

ut down herbaceous stems and clear the tatty remains of annuals, but do leave a little cover of the perennials that fade relatively elegantly (sedum, astilbes and grasses for example) They will provide winter interest as well as some much needed wildlife shelter - ladybirds especially appreciate winter quarters and will repay your hospitality by disposing of aphids in industrial quantities next year. Leaving sodden debris and fallen leaves around plants will only encourage pests and disease.

Clean out the greenhouse Clear out the greenhouse, wash pots and trays, clean, mend and oil your tools and throw away anything that is beyond hope or reasonable repair! Cleaning your greenhouse thoroughly will prevent pests from hibernating and leaping into action next spring. Wash the windows inside and out to allow maximum light in over the winter and scrub benches, fixtures and glazing bars with disinfectant, making sure you hose the whole place down really well, especially dark and dusty corners. For really effective pest elimination, fumigation is the ticket. Move all plants outside, shut the windows, light a sulphur candle in the middle of the floor, (retreat

at speed!), shut the door and wait until the smoke and fumes have completely dispersed several hours later. Your greenhouse should now be delightfully pest free!

Drain and lag Save yourself untold irritation and expense by draining and lagging standpipes, outdoor taps, irrigation lines and water pumps in advance of sudden hard frosts.

Prepare your soil for next year For beds that lie bare in winter, carry on with the winter digging until the soil is too hard - use compost, manure, leaf mould - in fact as much organic matter as you can lay your hands on to replace the goodness in it. It can be left in a pretty rough state over the winter when the elements will break the clods down, making spring planting infinitely easier! For text book soil improvement, you should add a layer of organic matter and dig it in by turning over spadefuls so it is buried below the surface. If this seems too much like hard work, just mulch the bed and leave the rest to the worms! If your soil is thin or heavy clay, just fork it over now; too much digging on the former will bring up infertile matter from below

PAGE 14 | Please mention ‘The Local Answer Ingleby Barwick’ when calling advertisers

See Page 30 for our Index of Advertisers whilst great chunks of wet clay will remain rock solid over the winter and become nigh on impossible to break up next year.

Planting Plant bare-rooted trees, shrubs, hedging and roses as well as fruit trees and bushes. Soak the roots in a bucket of water for an hour first and protect against frost and wind if exposed.

Rake fallen leaves Fallen leaves prevent light and air getting to plants and lawns and these dark, damp conditions are also heaven on earth for slugs, snails and an unwholesome array of fungal diseases. However, don’t waste these tumbled treasures - given time they will decompose into fabulously rich leaf mould - aka ‘nature’s soil conditioner of choice’! Rake them up and throw into a simple frame made of chicken wire or wood. Failing that, black bin liners spiked with air holes will do if you can bear the sight, but remember to dampen the leaves first should they be dry (some hope!). Leaf mould takes about a year to mature (two in the case of oak leaves), makes a great top dressing for woodland plants such as rhododendrons and is an excellent and free home-grown substitute for peat. Don’t be tempted to use rose leaves, which can easily carry infection, or evergreens, which take too long to rot down.

Motoring IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN - SO MAKE SURE YOUR CAR IS READY FOR WINTER!

L

ow winter temperatures and adverse weather conditions can make even the most basic trips in your car extremely hazardous - especially if you haven’t prepared well in advance. In November we can begin to expect poorer road conditions but with just a little bit of effort many of the problems can be alleviated before they even appear. Here are a few top tips from motoring experts to ensure a Winter of trouble free motoring and while you may think they are obvious observations it’s amazing how many people regret having ignored them! 1. Get your car serviced - This is probably the most obvious advice you can be given but it’s amazing how many people ignore it. While cold weather can cause many problems, up to half can be prevented by regular servicing and maintenance checks. Many garages offer free or discounted winter car checks and its certainly worth taking advantage of them to ensure you don’t get stuck miles from home in freezing conditions. 2. Check the battery - The battery should be the first priority because during the winter months it suffers from considerably more usage during cold temperatures. Increased use of lights, heater and blower all place it under additional strain, while on cold mornings it’s often the case that just starting the engine will take far longer than normal. Batteries have an effective life of around five years and if you are having trouble starting the car on a cold morning that is the best place to start looking for the solution. Get it checked and replaced if necessary.

3. Top up engine coolant with antifreeze Engine coolant in your radiator should be a 50/50 mix of water and antifreeze and over a long hot summer your antifreeze can often be diluted further than is safe. People make the mistake of topping up just with water during the year, so the antifreeze gets over-diluted and freezes during very cold weather, often leading to the engine over-heating and consequently large repair bills. It’s therefore vital to top up with antifreeze before winter. 4. Check the condition of your tyres - As a car’s tyres are key to both steering and braking, it is essential they are in good condition, so have them checked for both pressure and tread depth. In snowy or freezing conditions it is essential to have good road grip and both factors are extremely important towards both your safety and that of other road users. The motor organisations recommend a minimum depth of 3mm during the winter, compared to the legal minimum of 1.6mm. You could also look at changing from summer to winter tyres, as these also offer increased grip in snow, slush or ice. 5. Check your lights - Check that all lights, indicators and rear reflectors are clean and working properly. Also make sure there are no cracked lenses or blown bulbs, and don’t forget to check full beam headlights, fog lights and indicators. Apart from the safety aspect, faulty lighting represents the perfect excuse for the police to pull you over. 6. Wash your windscreen and wipers - In snow, sleet or rainy conditions it’s vital that your visibility isn’t hampered by poor windscreen

PAGE 18 | Please mention ‘The Local Answer Ingleby Barwick’ when calling advertisers

See Page 30 for our Index of Advertisers wipers or oily film on your windscreen. Give them all a good check and clean and make sure you keep your windscreen washer topped up with the appropriate antifreeze cleaning fluid. It’s also a good idea to run your fingers down your wiper blades to check for nicks and tears and to check for any small chips in the windscreen that may become hazardous during frosty conditions. You could also touch up any chips in the car bodywork as the abundant salt deposits on winter roads will attack them. 7. Prepare well for longer journeys - Before setting off on a longer journey, check the weather forecast, travel news and safest routes and allow extra journey time to avoid having to rush. Clear all windows of snow and ice using a scraper and de-icer, re-check your tyre pressures and ensure you have antifreeze in your car. 8. Carry a winter car breakdown kit - Despite all your efforts to prevent such problems there may be a time when you do actually break down and it is best to be prepared. A ‘breakdown kit’ should include a shovel, torch, blanket, hi-visibility vest, screenwash, food and

drink supplies, scraper and de-icer, and snow grips for your shoes in case you need to walk to safety. And don’t forget a fully charged mobile phone. Drive according to the road and weather conditions because common sense needs to prevail to reduce the number of accidents. 9. Check your cover - Comprehensive breakdown cover is crucial at this time of year and will give you the peace of mind of knowing you won’t end up stranded in the cold. So check your policy and remember to take a contact phone number with you on all journeys. 10. Other important factors - Always keep at least a quarter of a tank of fuel in case of unexpected delay and keep checking the oil. If you are able, check your brake pads, brake discs and brake fluid to ensure the brakes are fast and responsive. If not, get someone else to do it. Ensure the fan belt and alternator drive belts are tight and not worn and that plugs and other leads are in good condition and secure. All that should be done on your service, of course, but it doesn’t harm to keep checking. It’s always better to be safe than sorry!

Healthy Eating

QUICK LENTIL SOUP

W

ith food prices going up and wages staying the same, we all need to think about our budgets but also stay healthy. One way to make your food shopping trips economical and ensure you don’t waste food is to plan your weekly meals in advance: • See what you’ve already got in the house and use these ingredients to plan your meal • Look online or in cookbooks to find ideas for healthy and low-cost meals based on what’s cheap in the supermarkets and what your family enjoys. One good website is https://www. bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/category/ healthy - you can search recipe categories or put in an ingredient and it comes up with recipe suggestions. In the meantime, try this recipe, great thick Lentil Soup for winter:

Ingredients: 8oz greens (cabbage, broccoli, kale etc), 2 tablespoons olive oil, 2 medium carrots, 1 medium onion, 4 cloves garlic, 1 teaspoon ground cumin, 1 teaspoon paprika, ½ teaspoon turmeric, 2 medium tomatoes, 6 cups veg stock, 1½ cups red lentils, salt and pepper, dessertspoon lemon juice Method: Steam green and set aside. Finely chop onions, carrots and garlic and fry gently for about 8 minutes until golden. Add tomatoes and cook for a few minutes. Stir in the spices for 30 seconds. Add stock and lentils. Bring to the boil and reduce the heat, cook until lentils are soft. Put in your cooked greens, salt and pepper and lemon juice. Blend. Tips: Buy bottled lemon juice – cheaper than fresh ones. Buy your spices in Indian supermarkets, much cheaper.

THE TRUE FACTS ABOUT MEN AND WOMEN’S EVOLUTION Speaking recently to my grandson about life in general and how strangely different people can be, I got to thinking about the real differences between not just people in general, but men and women in particular. I therefore began to put together a number of great examples of that concept and I’d like to share them with you! A little girl - keen to know how she came to be on the earth - asked her mummy ‘Where did people come from?’‘Well,’ said her mummy, ‘first God created a man and a woman and then they had children. Then those children grew up and had children of their own and so on and so on and that’s how the world has so many people, including you.’ She then went and asked her daddy how she came to be and his answer was slightly different. ‘Well,’ he said, ‘First God created monkeys and eventually over a period of time those monkeys evolved into people and that’s how we came to be on the earth.’ Later, they were all sitting at the dinner table and the little girl said to her mummy ‘Mummy, you told me a fib. Daddy said people came from monkeys.’ ‘No dear,’ answered her mummy. ‘No one told you any lies. Daddy was talking about his family and I was talking about mine!’ Now Friday nights are traditionally the nights when the girls get together and the boys get together and sit in pubs discussing their partners. From the women’s point of view their attitude to men can be summed up by some of the following observations... ‘Men are like blenders.... you know you need one, but you’re never quite sure why.’ ‘Men are like mascara. They usually run at the first signs of emotion.’ ‘Men are like bank accounts.... without a lot of

money they don’t generate much interest.’ ‘Men are like horoscopes. They tell you what to do but they are usually wrong.’ ‘Men are like popcorn. They can satisfy you but only for a little while.’ ‘Men’s brains are like the modern prison system - not enough cells!’ But we have to give the men the chance to get their own back. Here they come...... ‘We’ll never understand women. They can pour boiling hot wax on their upper thigh, let it cool, then tear it off, ripping the hair out by the root. And yet they’re still afraid of a little spider!’ In the beginning, God created the earth and rested. Then God created man and rested. Then God created women. Since then neither God nor man has rested. Two men were admiring a famous actress, but one of them said ‘Yeah, but if you take away her beautiful hair, her great figure, her wonderful features and her lovely personality, what are you left with? ‘My wife,’ said his friend. It’s a fact of nature that women live longer than men. We reckon that’s because they don’t have wives! It’s a woman’s fault that men tell her lies. She asks too many damn questions. Modern women put on wigs, fake eyelashes, false fingernails, a load of assorted make-up, living bras, various pads and have a multitude of plastic surgeries yet still complain they can’t find a ‘real man.’ My wife is as beautiful today as the day I married her. It just takes her about half an hour in front of the mirror to get there! And the main difference between men and women? Few women admit their age. Even fewer men actually act it!

LIES, DAMN LIES AND STATISTICS

I

t’s thought that Benjamin Disraeli originally coined the phrase ‘there are lies, damn lies and statistics.’ He was obviously trying to suggest that while statistics aren’t necessarily lies they can nevertheless be translated in different ways. And that can certainly be attributed to Middlesbrough’s performances so far this season because if you look at the relative success ratio to date the statistics actually contradict each other. The first one bandied about by most of the press is that we spent over £40million on players during the summer. While that may be reasonably accurate, the contradictory fact is that incoming transfer fees negated most of that sum. The second statistic that many pundits keep churning out is that before Cardiff City we had only lost one game in the last nine. Sadly for ‘Boro fans the contradictory statistic of that period is that we only won two. In terms of league points that meant we had earned a mere eleven points from the twenty seven that were available. That is definitely not promotion form. One of those games, incidentally, was the league cup win (or whatever it’s now called) against Aston Villa and having just returned from a reasonably good performance against Bournemouth in the same competition only to lose 3-1 it is hard to equate the

comparisons between our league results and those cup results because the teams are so different. In first team terms, therefore, the constant declaration that this is a new squad trying to knit together that will eventually start to take the league by storm is one which we faithfully cling onto in the hope it actually happens. Sadly, the longer the weeks - and games - go on, the less conviction there is that it is ever going to become reality. Now I’ve been a constant supporter of Adama Traore this season and still believe that his ability will eventually shine through if he can only harness it into a system that combines his undoubted talent with the kind of teamwork that enables the people alongside him to take full advantage. But if that doesn’t start happening fairly quickly, his services will have to be deemed dispensable because if incidents like the sending off at Aston Villa and the unnecessary tackle against Cardiff continue then he can only be deemed a liability. He played really well at Bournemouth, however, and if he can carry on that sort of performance with the first team over the next few weeks he might just redeem his situation. Whatever happens, though, we have to start picking up more wins than draws. At the time of writing the saddest statistic of all is that we have four wins, four defeats and five draws, but convert those draws into wins and

Solution

we’d have another ten points on the board. It doesn’t take a genius to see that under those circumstances we would be in the top two! Perhaps I’m trying to convince myself that our chance is still alive and there isn’t a great deal of distance between where we are now and potentially being in the play offs or even automatic promotion places. But we all know that things are rapidly going to have to change. I’ve seen enough of many of our new players to suggest that individually they have decided talent. But they have to combine that talent with that of their colleagues to create great teamwork and the consequent results we all hope will follow. If it doesn’t happen in the next month or so we will undoubtedly find ourselves in an impossible position and the season will be relatively dead. I therefore pray that by the time I write this piece for the December magazine things will be infinitely more optimistic. We can only keep our fingers crossed.
