In The Garden
I
n frosty weather little can be done in the garden. The ground is too hard to dig or plant and the lawn should not be walked on. Although there is very little work to do, January ushers in the beginning of a new year that is full of promise in the garden. Despite the low temperatures and short daylight hours, there some useful tasks that can be done. If the weather is mild, you can still plant roses and bare rooted shrubs and trees. At this is time of year a heated greenhouse has great appeal, especially when the weather is too cold and wet to work outside. The warmth of a heated cold-frame or greenhouse or even a sunny indoor window enables you to sow annuals that need a long growing season and start of those early vegetable crops. Roots of favourite herbs, can also be lifted and brought indoors, to provide fresh shoots and leaves for winter flavour. Winter digging is necessary for beds and borders that need to be planted in early spring. The earlier this is done the better, allowing time for frosts to act and break down the soil. The longer any rough clods
of soil are exposed to frost, the easier it will be to get a fine tilth in spring. While digging, it is a good idea to work in plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost at the same time, thus improving the soil’s texture and richness. If you have planted any trees or shrubs during the winter months, check that they haven’t been lifted by frost. Once lifted, they can rock in the wind and their roots will be slower to get established. Re-firm the plants by pressing down on the surrounding soil with your feet. You may also need to stake any tall or exposed plants to prevent further wind rock. If the surface of water features or a pond has frozen solid, and particularly if it contains fish, break the ice with care. If the ice is very thick, use a little boiling water rather than a hammer, to avoid shock waves which can kill the creatures beneath.
Planning Next Season’s Garden The long winter evenings provide plenty of time to browse through seed catalogues and plan new projects in the garden. Late January to early February is an ideal time to visit garden centres to buy seeds, tubers and bulbs for the coming season. If you are
PAGE 14 | Please mention ‘The Local Answer Ingleby Barwick’ when calling advertisers
See Page 30 for our Index of Advertisers ordering products from a seed catalogue, or over the internet, it should be done as early as possible or they may arrive too late for their proper sowing or planting dates.
Maintain and Check Garden Tools and Equipment Make sure that mechanical equipment such as mowers, rotovators, edgers, strimmers and hedge trimmers are in good working order. If any need repairing or sharpening, take them in for servicing by a professional.

Winter Tasks Any jobs that do not require cementing or painting, such as building or knocking down old sheds, putting up a fence, laying out gravel paths or a terrace or making a rock garden, are best carried out now, while the soil is workable and all the plants are dormant.
Making a Rock Garden This is a good time to make a new rock garden or improve an old one. It is too early to add any plants yet, but the preparation and construction work can be done now. A good builders’ merchant, nursery or garden centre specializing in garden construction materials should have a range of rocks and will be able to advise you on costs, and how many you are likely to need.

HYUNDAI LAUNCH THEIR FIRST N PERFORMANCE MODEL
H
yundai have just launched their first N performance model with the new 130i N – their first ever hot hatch and the first model to wear the brand’s N performance badge. The standard i30N will cost from £24,995, making it one of the best-value hot hatchbacks - undercutting the Ford Focus ST by £240 and coming in more than £3,000 cheaper than both the standard VW Golf GTI and the Peugeot 308 Gti. Upgrading it to the N Performance version adds an extra £3,000 to the price but, at £27,995, it’s still £325 cheaper than the standard Golf GTI. It’s spec brings 275hp – 40hp more than a Golf GTI Performance Pack and almost £2,000 cheaper than the VW. Sporting a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine with 260lb ft of torque and 250hp will get you a 155mph top speed, though when you may be able to test that statistic remains a mystery. The i30 N’s optional performance package obviously gives you more power but also adds a few other sporty trinkets like stickier Pirelli P-Zero tyres, red brake calipers and bigger brake discs with larger 19-inch wheels. If you go for the non-performancepack car it offers 18-inch wheels. The most important addition, though, is the electronically controlled limited-slip
differential – designed to help the i30 N accelerate hard out of tight corners without spinning the front wheels. Visually, the difference between the 130 N and a standard i30 is easy to recognise with pumped-up wheel arches, bigger bumpers, larger 18 or 19-inch wheels and two exhaust tips. It also sits 4mm lower on 18-inch wheels and 8mm lower on the 19s. Black headlamp surrounds, a triangular brake light in the black spoiler and a smattering of N badges complete the extremely sporty look. Colour-wise, the i30 N offers Performance Blue, Clean Slate, Polar White, Micron Grey, Phantom Black and Engine Red colour schemes. Internally, Performance versions will have N branded leather seats available in leather or grippier suede cloth with electric adjustment for both front seats. Thick side-bolsters will keep you tight on fast cornering, while a chunky steering wheel complete with buttons will allow you to switch between the i30 N’s driving modes – Eco, Normal, Sport, N and N Custom. Each mode changes the engine response and aggression of the auto revmatching system, limited-slip differential, exhaust sound, electronic suspension and stability control.
PAGE 18 | Please mention ‘The Local Answer Ingleby Barwick’ when calling advertisers
See Page 30 for our Index of Advertisers As standard, the i30 N gets a five-inch touch screen infotainment system, with the option to upgrade to an eight-inch version with satellite navigation. It also shows you how much power and torque you’re using and monitors your turbo boost levels, lap times and acceleration figures. More usefully, perhaps, all i30 Ns come with Apple Car Play and Android Auto smart phone mirroring systems. You can also add a wireless charging pad for compatible smart phones, and live-traffic updates. Because of a stiffening bar running behind the rear seats, boot space is slightly reduced from the normal i30 but this improves handling an still means you can get 381 litres of stuff in the boot, compared to the 395 litres you get without the stiffness bar. The i30 N comes with a whole host of safety kit, including automatic emergency braking that can stop the car automatically if it detects an imminent crash that you’ve not responded to. Fatigue detection can
alert you if it thinks you’re nodding off at the wheel, lane-keep assist will steer you back in your lane on the motorway if you drift out, and a traffic-sign recognition system will flag up the current speed limit on the sat-nav display, as well as on the small screen between the rev-counter and speedo dials. So, a performance model that more than competes with its rivals. It is due to be launched in early January and is well worth considering.

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS - THE FIRST THING THAT GETS BROKEN ON JANUARY 1st They say making New Year’s resolutions is something most people do with the absolute intention of keeping them but always find it impossible. But for those who made one and kept it last year we would like to offer our hearty congratulations. For the rest of you (and that includes us) here are a few New Year observations you might like! It’s everybody’s New Year wish to win the lottery. Well if I did I wouldn’t take the publicity, you get too many begging letters. And if they’re anything like the ones I send out I wouldn’t want to know. An optimist stays up until midnight to see the New Year in. A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves. My brother’s New Year’s resolution is to move out of our parents’ house. You’d think after 49 years he’d try another one. Every New Year’s Day I celebrate making it through another holiday season without killing my relatives. My New Year’s resolution is to get better at pretending to know the words to Auld Lang Syne. New Year’s Eve, when auld acquaintance be forgot (unless those paternity tests come back positive). A New Year resolution is something that goes in one year and out the other. This New Year’s Eve I’m going to make a resolution I can keep: I’m not going to diet this year. Women get a little more excited about New Year’s Eve than men do because they have better intentions. But they still drink too much, make a lot of promises they’re not going to keep and the next morning as soon as they wake up they start breaking them. Men just call that a date.
My New Year’s resolution is to eat better, so from now on, I’m going to only date blokes who can afford to take me somewhere other than McDonalds. If you make a New Year’s resolution to eat a healthy diet, and you keep it, you won’t actually live longer, but it will bloody well seem like it. Youth is when you’re allowed to stay up late on New Year’s Eve. Middle age is when you’re forced to. Usually my main goal at a New Year’s party is to remember who I came with. May you find the strength to write, “Who is this?” to all the strange numbers that text you “Happy New Year!” tonight. My New Year resolution is not to shovel snow. Since I live in Florida I feel pretty good about it. New Year parades have a lot in common with Santa Claus. Nobody is ever awake to see either one of them. This New Year I was going to make a resolution never to be late again, but I didn’t wake up until January 2nd. “Out with the old, in with the new” is a fitting expression for a holiday that is based on vomiting. My New Year’s resolution is to try to remember why I’ve walked into a room. I see no need to make more New Year’s resolutions when the ones already on the books aren’t being kept. My New Year’s resolution is to take all the Christmas lights down by Easter.
And finally, a wish to you all - may all your troubles last as long as your New Year’s resolutions. Have a great 2018!

Football
PROMOTION WOULD OBVIOUSLY MAKE IT A VERY HAPPY YEAR, BUT HAVE WE ALREADY BLOWN IT?
I
t’s pretty typical of ‘Boro teams that having hauled themselves into a decent position with four wins out of five they suddenly according to Garry Monk anyway - lose concentration and put in a couple of really bad performances to totally undo the good work that had already been done. The two defeats to Derby County and Bristol City brought us to the deadline for this magazine with Christmas about to intervene so we can only look forward to the December programme with conjecture. Hopefully, however, by the time you read this we might have pulled it back round again and be sitting nearer a play-off position. That, I’m pretty sure, is the best we can now look forward to having seen both Wolves and Cardiff consistently churn out excellent results to be the two that - even at this relatively early stage - seem to have almost certainly cemented their return to the top flight. The forthcoming seasonal programme gives us games at home to Ipswich,
Bolton and Villa and away to Millwall, Sheffield Wednesday and Preston and I would suggest that to enter the New Year in a reasonable position would demand an average of three points at home and one point away from those fixtures. That would obviously give us 12 points and depending on results around us could well see us in those play off positions. Unfortunately, it’s not going to be that easy as none of those games can be classed as a ‘gimme’ - even Bolton as they have picked up a bit since we demolished them earlier in the season. It’s all going to be about taking the chances and it has to be said that while we have fabricated a number of those over the first half of the season they have been consistently squandered. And although he’s done reasonably well in terms of goals scored that also includes Britt Assombalonga who could really have over 20 to his name already had he been able to put away even a small percentage of the chances he’s actually missed.

Solution
That the natives are getting a bit restless is becoming very apparent, with social media full of opinions on Garry Monk and his failure so far to live up to the Chairman’s promise that we would ‘smash the league.’ He was definitely given the necessary financial backing so doesn’t really have any excuses for the team failing to live up to everybody’s hopes and expectations. But football is a funny old game and you never quite know what’s around the corner so all we can do is keep hoping and keep giving the team the kind of support that is widely acknowledged as being among the best in the league. With a lot of luck and a bit more concentration we might still be having the happy new year we all crave. We sincerely hope you do!

WONDERFUL THOUGHTS FOR THE NEW YEAR TO COME... This is a time for reflection as well as celebration. As you look back on the past year and all that has taken place in your life, remember each experience for the good that has come from it and the knowledge you have gained. Remember the efforts you have made and the goals you have reached. Remember the love you have shared and the happiness you have brought. Remember the laughter, the joy, the hard work and the tears. And as you reflect on the past year also be thinking of the new one to come. Because that, most importantly, is a time for new beginnings and the true celebration of life.
And with that in mind may you all.... Have friends who understand you enough to always remain your friend Have work to do that has real value and without which the world would be a poorer place Have a mind not afraid to travel even though the trail has not yet been blazed Have an understanding heart Have a sense of humour without sarcasm or hurt Have time for quiet meditation and the patience to wait for the arrival of these things and the wisdom to recognise them when come. Have a very happy and peaceful 2018.
