Is Your Conservatory TOO HOT TOO COLD In The Summer?
Why invest in a New Home Conservatory Roof? We are approximately 75% cheaper (better priced) than replacing your existing roof. HOW? 1. We insulate and improve the energy eďŹƒciency of your conservatory ceiling from the inside of your conservatory. 2. We do not replace your existing conservatory roof. Our Solution: We use an interior lightweight guaranteed insulated system that will keep your conservatory COOL in the Summer and
In The Winter?
WARM in the Winter. This guaranteed installation is carried out in 1 day with the minimum of disruption to you. We only insulate the interior conservatory ceiling and transform your conservatory into a living space that can be used by you to enjoy 365 days a year - even when the sun is shining for hours or heavy snow is on the ground. There is no change to the external appearance of your conservatory roof. How many times during the winter period have you wasted
energy and money by allowing the heat from a radiator or electric fan to escape through the conservatory roof? Why are you wasting expensive heating? WE HAVE THE SOLUTION Compare our price to a new conservatory roof - taking up to 3/4 days to complete with all the household disruption and noise that occurs. Your garden is aected by all the work being carried out. For further information, telephone 07979 867550 or 01642 386009.

In The Garden
M
ow lawns regularly in May. They will need to be mowed at least weekly, twice weekly if possible now as they will grow very rapidly at this time of year. Avoid mowing too short this early on as this may cause the roots to grow shallowly and will make the lawn susceptible to moss and weeds Treat bare patches – this can be done by throwing seed down where the grass is thin. This is known as over-seeding. Feed the lawn – feeding the lawn with a fertilizer will ensure a thicker, healthier more drough-resilient lawn. Treat moss and weeds – feeding the lawn should assist in keeping the moss and weeds at bay, however, if it does persist there are products on the market that will feed and weed the lawn. Aerate Lawn – if your lawn is growing on heavy, compacted or clay soil, it will benefit from being aereated at this time of year. Aerating improves the drainage on your lawn and encourages good growth. Remember to dress the surface once aerating is done as this will further improve drainage.
Garden Care
Keep on top of weeds – the soil is starting to really warm up now so weeds will be growing rapidly. Keep on top on top of
them in flower and veg beds by hoeing them and pulling out as much of the weeds as possible, so they are unable to take a hold. Plant seedlings out – you can now start to harden off seedlings sown in February and March. Start by introducing them slowly by putting them out during the day and after a week or so, you can plant them into their final position. Prepare your beds – get your beds ready for planting your bedding plants by clearing debris and adding fertilizer and compost to your soil. Look out for pests – the vine weevil will attack container plants but you can add nematodes now to kill them off. The most vulnerable plants to this pest are cyclamen, begonia and primula. Dead head spring bulbs – you can now start to dead head daffodils and other spring flowers as they die off. Leave the leaves of the plant to die off naturally and feeding these plants now will ensure a good display for next year. Trim hedges – this is the time of year to give your hedges their first trim. In warmer climates, hanging baskets can now go out for the summer – elsewhere, these can be hung in a greenhouse until the risk of frost has passed. Dead head daffodils and tulips and other
PAGE 14 | Please mention ‘The Local Answer Ingleby Barwick’ when calling advertisers
See Page 30 for our Index of Advertisers spring bedding plants – let the plants continue to grow until they die off as this will enable the bulbs to store up energy for blooming in the next spring.
Fruit And Veg
Winter crops can now be sown – Leeks, brussels sprouts, winter cabbage, marrow. Starting them off in pots is a good idea, you can then plant them out in a few weeks once you have seedlings. Harden off your tomatoes – If you have ‘potted on’ your tomato seedlings, May is a good time to start hardening them off by introducing them gradually to the outside, extending the length of time you leave them out each day. However, do not leave the plants out overnight until all risk of frost has passed as they are very sensitive to frost and it will kill them off. Alternatively you can introduce them to an unheated greenhouse to harden them off. Earth up your potatoes – Keep pulling the soil up around the base of your potatoes to avoid them coming into contact with the light, as this turns them green.
Other Activities
Pinch out the tops of sweet peas – this encourages the plant to bush out and produce more flowers Keep on top of your composting – during the growing season, you will need to keep topping up with well-rotted compost. Feeding everywhere in your garden is a good idea in May, as it helps to get the nutrients back into the soil after the wet winter months. Keep ponds clear and filters clean – also start feeding fish regularly. As the days warm up and we see more of the sun, you may see blanket weed forming on the surface of your pond. Remember to remove this as soon as it appears as it will spread quickly once it gets a hold. Look out for disease on your roses – these can include mildew, rust and blackspot. Diseased leaves should be removed as soon as possible.

Motoring
THE NISSAN LEAF 2018 - THE NEW BRIGHT SPARK ON THE MOTORING CIRCUIT
T
alk of forthcoming legislation to ban the manufacture of petrol and diesel engine cars has prompted many to look more closely at the electric car concept and although there is still not a huge rush by the British public to adopt them there is definitely a lot more interest in the pros and cons of electric car technology. Nissan have therefore timed the launch of the new version of their popular ‘Leaf’ model perfectly and are likely to enjoy increased interest since its recently won ‘Best Electric Car’ at the What Car? 2018 Awards. Nissan’s Intelligent Mobility technologies ‘ProPilot ‘and ‘e-Pedal’ caused What Car? Editor Steve Huntingford to say that the ‘Leaf’ won their award because it ‘combined excellent performance with generous standard equipment and low running costs.’ The first ‘Leaf’was introduced in 2011 and was considered quite ‘quirky’ at the time. Nissan’s new version has a more conventional look this time around, with four versions available offering varying degrees of attraction. The first, ‘Visia,’ comes with 16-inch steel wheels, LED daytime running lights and chrome door handles. It’s anticipated, however, that the most popular models will be
at the higher-end of the scale. The ‘Acenta,’ for instance, has alloy wheels rather than steel, front fog lamps and electric folding mirrors. Move up another notch and the ‘N-Connecta’ has 17-inch alloys, tinted glass, and gloss black paint, while the top-of-the-range ‘Tekna’ also includes bright, full-LED headlights. Internally, there’s plenty of room for four tall adults, with a fifth possibly able to squeeze into the middle of the back row. The boot is a decent size compared to the Ford Focus or Volkswagen Golf. The optional ‘Bose’ sound system - standard on the Tekna version creates a bit of a bit of extra technology boxes on the boot floor but the quality of the sound negates that small problem. Storage isn’t bad with a number of recesses situated around the cabin, though there is no fold-down central armrest in the back. As with most electric cars The Leaf is comfortable rather than thrilling, but the ride is a real pleasure with good stability and excellent cornering so is great for both driving around the city and for cruising on the motorway. And that brings us to the big questions of power and distance which is one of the main reasons for people to dispense with the idea of buying electric. Well, the latest ‘Leaf’ provides
PAGE 18 | Please mention ‘The Local Answer Ingleby Barwick’ when calling advertisers
See Page 30 for our Index of Advertisers a 40kWh battery, which is bigger than the previous version and thus offers more power. It also regenerates electricity to the battery when you lift off the accelerator, so you can control how much regeneration is achieved. Driving it in an economical manner is helped dramatically by the in-car graphics that show how much energy you’re using, and sticking to those indications for maximum driving efficiency should get you a range of around 160 to 170 miles. Using a public fast charge outlet could get the battery charged up to 80 in around forty minutes - just enough time for a nice lunch or afternoon tea! Charging overnight at home with the 32kW wall box that is supplied free with the car should give you a complete charge in around a standard night’s sleep of eight hours. Whatever the method it is much, much cheaper than filling up with petrol or diesel. And speaking of economy, the new ‘Leaf,’ despite the improvements - is actually cheaper than the original. Add to that the exemption from excise duty (car tax), free parking in
R O * O F
many places and - if appropriate - exemption from London’s extremely irritating congestion charge and you’ll see that it has huge financial advantages when compared with the traditional petrol and diesel alternatives. The entry-level Visia car comes with cruise control, automatic headlights and wipers and a basic audio system, while the Acenta adds Apple Car Play and Android Auto for integration with your smartphone. It also gets a more comfortable leather-wrapped steering wheel and air conditioning. The N-Connecta has part-leather upholstery, a clever around view monitor that shows an overhead view of the car when parking or manoeuvring, as well as parking sensors. The Tekna has leather, heated seats, an electronic parking brake and the previously mentioned uprated Bose stereo system. So, If an electric car has become your preferred choice, the Leaf’s comfortable ride and impressive range makes it an attractive proposition and - in our opinion - a car that is really worth investigating.

IT’S THE TURN OF THE ENGLISH...
O
ver the last couple of issues we’ve related a few stories about our friends in Scotland and Ireland that were told in an affectionate way and without any offence intended. As promised - and to show we have no prejudice against anyone - here are some similar tales that we feel reflect the idiosyncrasies of the English. Enjoy! A man goes to a marriage guidance councillor and said ‘Please help me. My wife is unfaithful to me. Every evening, she goes to The Red Lion pub and picks up men. In fact, she sleeps with anybody who asks her! I’m going crazy, what do you think I should do?”“Relax,” says the Councillor, “take a deep breath and calm down. Now, tell me, exactly where is The Red Lion?” John was on his deathbed and gasped pitifully. “Give me one last request, dear,” he said. “Of course, John,” his wife said softly. “After I die,” he said, “I want you to marry Bob.” “But I thought you hated Bob,” she said. With his last breath John said, “I do!” A Geordie won a toilet brush which was the booby prize at his local pub’s raffle. A couple of weeks later the landlord asked him how he was getting on with the toilet brush. ‘Well,’ said the Geordie, ‘I don’t think much of it. I’m going back to using toilet paper!’
finishing her trip with a cup of coffee and a beautiful slice of chocolate cake , compliments of the last shop. She was jubilant. Then she remembered her husband. Feeling guilty, she dashed to the hospital. She saw the doctor in the corridor and asked about her husband’s condition. The lady doctor glared at her and shouted, ‘You went ahead and finished your shopping trip didn’t you! I hope you’re proud of yourself! While you were out for the past four hours enjoying yourself in town, your husband has been languishing in the Intensive Care Unit! It’s just as well you went ahead and finished, because it will more than likely be the last shopping trip you ever take! For the rest of his life he will require round-the-clock care and you will be his carer!’ The woman was feeling so guilty she broke down and sobbed. The lady doctor then chuckled and said, ‘Nah, I’m just pulling your leg. He actually died. Now come on, show me what you bought.’ My wife just said to me ‘You weren’t even listening were you?’ and I thought ‘that’s a pretty weird way to start a conversation!’ We’ve discovered that there’s a definite disadvantage in being an Englishman ... and here it is. Japanese eat very little fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than us. Mexicans eat a lot of fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than us. Chinese drink very little red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than us. Italians drink excessive amounts of red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than us. Germans drink lots of beer and eat lots of sausages and fats and suffer fewer heart attacks than us...... The conclusion is that you can eat and drink what you like. It’s apparently speaking English that kills you...
The Dark Side Of Women! A woman was in town on a shopping trip. She began her day finding the most perfect shoes in the first shop and a beautiful dress on sale in the second. In the third, everything had just been reduced by 50 per cent when her mobile phone rang. It was a female doctor notifying her that her husband had just been in a terrible car accident and was in a critical condition in hospital. The woman told the doctor to inform The teacher in an infant school was trying to her husband where she was and that she’d teach her pupils good grammar. She said to one be there as soon as possible. As she hung little boy ‘Paul, give me a sentence beginning up she realised she was leaving what was with the letter “I”. Paul started his sentence with shaping up to be her best shopping day ever ‘I is’ when the teacher quickly interrupted him ..... ‘No, Paul, you must say “I am” not “I is.” ‘OK,’ replied so she decided to get in two or three more Paul, but I still think that ‘I’ is the ninth letter of the shops before heading to the hospital. She alphabet!’ ended up shopping the rest of the morning, PAGE 26 | Please mention ‘The Local Answer Ingleby Barwick’ when calling advertisers

Football
LET’S HOPE WE TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE FIXTURE LIST!
A
t the start of the season we all look at the fixture list to see what the run-in is going to be on the off-chance that we may need to win the last couple of games to progress to either automatic promotion or the play-offs. This season I remember thinking that a home game against Millwall was an infinitely more attractive proposition than a trip to Ipswich a ground where I still vividly remember Dalian Atkinson tearing us apart. As it happens, the Millwall game looks much more difficult and has turned into the most important of the season because a win will guarantee that much sought after play-off spot. The only way the fixture list hasn’t been kind is that the Millwall game comes before deadline and I’m writing this with fingers crossed not knowing the outcome of that game. I am, however, presuming that ‘Boro will do enough to reach the end of season lottery even though my sixty odd years as a ‘Boro fan should have taught me that is a very dangerous ploy! We have, however, hit good form at exactly the right time with a decent performance and win against Bristol City being followed by an excellent performance and great win at Derby. Every player played his part in that Derby game and we looked particularly
strong throughout the team. That both games were against top ten sides made the two results doubly satisfying taking into account the poor performances against the top ten so far this season. And so - hopefully - on to the play-offs where - if results go as I expect - we’ll probably be playing Aston Villa for a place in the final. As well as Villa have played this season, and the fact we failed to get more than a single point from the six available against them, the statistics don’t tell the full truth. We started well at Villa Park but had Adama Traore sent off after only four minutes to negate any chance of a famous victory. A draw under extreme pressure was a very good result under the circumstances so honours remained reasonably even. We played very well at the Riverside but failed to put our chances away only to be foiled by a Robert Snodgrass header in Tony Pulis’s first game in charge. An easy victory over them in the league cup was sandwiched in between and should give us even more confidence that we can indeed make Wembley. Once there, of course, it’s anybody’s guess who the opposition would be but Fulham’s fantastic end of season run suggests it would probably be them provided Cardiff don’t slip up in their last three games.
PAGE 28 | Please mention ‘The Local Answer Ingleby Barwick’ when calling advertisers
Solution
There are lots of questions still to be answered, of course, but it has developed into a really exciting end to the season - a scenario that didn’t look particularly promising until Pulis took over. I’m pleased to see Garry Monk getting decent results at Birmingham, however, because he is a thoroughly decent bloke, but it is a fact that Pulis has had a much more positive effect since his appointment. Whatever happens over the next few weeks though, it’s pretty obvious to most ‘Boro fans that changes will have to be made over the summer to make us more effective going forward. Our midfield is not anywhere near as creative as it could be though Mo Besic has certainly improved that aspect of the play since his introduction. In the meantime we can only watch on with bated breath and pray that we don’t have to suffer yet more Wembley heartbreak. One day it might happen for us in the national stadium. Let’s hope this year is that time! Hopefully see you at Wembley!
