A NOTE FROM OUR

PUBLISHER "All of us every single year, we're a different person. I don't think we're the same person all our lives." -Steven Spielberg As I age, "Happy New Year" (the words we echo each time this year signifying a lingual rebirth) like so many things in my life has taken on a new meaning for me. It seems the only way for me to become clearer and more awake to the impermanence of life and the opportunity it provides is to live longer. You could see this as kind of a cruel joke, a life that only allows us to gain wisdom while losing life's breath. I choose to see it differently. Wisdom presents itself only when you are capable of doing something with it. Happy New Year to me means, "Happy there is more time to create, inspire, shop, travel and eat.” This first issue of 2018 assumes the latter understanding of “Happy New Year.” Our wonderfully creative and fabulous team has resolved to challenge your beliefs of what is available in Greater Palm Springs. To inspire you to eat better, live better and experience new and more things than you did in the past year; to leave your comfort zone.

To align with our goals, we have changed the names of our mini-magazines within our publication to Foodie, Shoppe, Alive and Escape. If you got a new Fitbit this holiday season, please take a second and strap it on because the calorieburning, drool-inducing pages of our first "Foodie" section are sure to get your heart racing. If our "Foodie" issue is too big to complete in one sitting, may I suggest starting with an interestfocused guide to Modernism Week (p. 119), a sneak peek of what to expect at our issue release party at the new Kimpton Rowan Palm Springs (p. 6), @hotpinkpineapples shows us the most creative dishes in the area (p. 77), our massive "Foodie" guide (p. 43) and take a doggie bag for the rest when you have more time to digest. ....and I mean this. Happy New Year!

I met Tommy in his office at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. I found myself getting a bit nervous and thinking, “This guy has been to the Olympics and won a medal! And I don’t know the first thing about tennis.” I’m not much of a sports fanatic, so I had to mentally prepare myself to share the same space as someone who has seen the world, competed with the best and has successfully captured his dreams.

I

He was in his office watching tennis on a big flat screen TV while re-wrapping the grip of his racket. Before I could even begin the interview, Tommy started interviewing me and asked, “So are you based here in the desert? Were you born and raised here?” This highly successful professional athlete was taking an interest in my history. This was no longer an interview, but a real conversation. Nick Isabella photographed Tommy using a Canon 5D mark III paired with a set of Sigma f1.4 Art lenses at 35mm, 50mm and 85mm, as well as a Canon 135mm f2.0 and a pair of Interfit S1 HSS strobes. “The conditions in the desert were a bit

harsh, with the late morning heat setting in and a cloudless sky, but Tommy and the crew at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden made things easy and were a pleasure to work with,” Nick said. “Our goal was to photograph Tommy in a way that showed his personality and that he was an athlete without it turning into an action sports shoot.” I’ve never met a professional athlete before, so I don’t know if this is always true, but the energy and the presence that Tommy created was remarkable. His stature was looming, tall, with long arms and legs and very distinguished facial features. Hearing this tennis giant talk about things like family and being a father was what stood out most to me in his story: “You can’t prepare for it. You can buy books and do this and that and think that you know what’s going to happen, but you really don’t.” After talking about things other than tennis with Tommy, I no longer felt that I was speaking with Tommy Haas, pro athlete, but rather, Tommy Haas, father and family man who also happens to have a killer serve.

These Palm Springs carnivore experts are serving and seasoning beef like a boss and we’re here to share it with you! With mouth-watering meats and dishes on the menu, if you’re not licking your barbecuesauced fingers, you’re doing it wrong. And it is totally acceptable if you need to ask for extra napkins.

ON TO THE NEXT ONE • His second location, Sandfish by Engin Onural, is finally here! Engin’s goal is to make sure his “second baby” will be as successful as his first. DISH IT OUT • Engin’s favorite dish on the menu? “I love them all.” He suggests trying the Spicy Tuna Tostada and The Venue Roll. NATIVE KNOWLEDGE • Engin is also a sake sommelier, so be sure to sample the extensive array of fine sakes.

ENGIN ONURAL CREDENTIALS: OWNER AND EXECUTIVE SUSHI CHEF AT THE VENUE SUSHI BAR & SAKE LOUNGE AND SANDFISH BY ENGIN ONURAL Q: When did you know the culinary path was for you? Engin Onural: Young. Very young. I was already cooking with my mother and making family dinners. I was already making a bold statement in the neighborhood.

Q

Q: How do you get your inspiration? EO: Traveling. I have been heavily inspired from Scandinavia lately, traveling to Denmark, Sweden and Norway [and] understanding their culture. What they eat and the native ingredients are what makes me happy, and when I’m happy I get inspired. Q: What do you hope guests will take away from eating your dishes and from their dining experience? EO: Our dishes are always well balanced with flavors so you actually get the flavor of the ingredients you are eating. Our Omakase (chef’s tasting menu) is constantly evolving. Recently, we had Spanish octopus, bluefin tartar with Japanese tobiko and toast, 38 LOCALE MAGAZINE

Hamachi sashimi with takuan mentaiko paste, elderflower crème brûlée and the list will go on. Q: How do you think your role as a chef affects your community? EO: We feed people, meaning we take care of people. We enjoy taking care of people. Also, some of us, including myself, are continuously involved in many charities, helping them raise even more money by being part of it. We are also educators. In my case, I am showing eating healthy can be delicious and lots of fun. Q: If you could only use three ingredients for your food, what would your choices be and why? EO: Hamachi, feta cheese and microgreens. Shockingly, feta and microgreens go extremely well with sushi.

LET’S TACO BOUT IT • Gregorio’s favorite dish on the menu? The baja fish tacos, of course!

G R E G O R I O CA L D E R I N CREDENTIALS: EXECUTIVE CHEF, EL JEFE AT THE SAGUARO PALM SPRINGS Q: What is your fondest memory of food? Gregorio Calderin: When I was a kid growing up in Puerto Rico, during the holidays my father used to roast a whole pig for the family. I would sit and turn the pig by hand every so often. Q: At what point did you feel you wanted a career in the culinary industry? GC: At a very young age, I was intrigued by vegetables, especially seafood. I loved unique flavors and always wanted to try things kids usually don't like to eat. Q: What inspires you? GC: Traveling is the best way for me to get ideas for cooking! I enjoy trying new things. Also, reading is inspiring.

Q: After dining at El Jefe, what type of experience do you hope your guests will have? GC: The menu style at El Jefe is the perfect accompaniment to the margaritas, craft cocktails and beers we serve. I hope this delicious and approachable menu makes our guests want to come back over and over again. Q: As a chef, how do you believe your role affects the community? GC: Since our menu features regional cuisine, I try to buy from the closest farms possible. The Coachella Valley and the surrounding area offer a unique assortment of some of the finest produce in the state.

JOE FUNKEY CREDENTIALS: OWNER, SMOKE TREE BBQ BAR & GRILL

MARG-OCLOCK • Gregorio suggests that the tacos, nachos and the burger are better when paired with a drink.

Q: What is your favorite memory with food? Joe Funkey: There are too many to have a favorite. Some are eating in France at some amazing cafes, traveling cross country on the Harley, local barbecues and sharing a meal with Chef Reese.

NATIVE KNOWLEDGE • The restaurant is located in The Saguaro Palm Springs, so book a couple of nights to give you ample time to try all of Gregorio’s creations on the menu.

Q: What is the best advice you’ve ever received? JF: My roommate told me I should marry my wife. I already knew that though.

EL JEFE AT THE SAGUARO PALM SPRINGS 1800 E Palm Canyon Dr Palm Springs, CA 92264 760.323.1711 www.thesaguaro.com

Q: What are your goals for your restaurant? JF: To continue to provide traditional barbecue for all who love it and for those who will love it. Q: What is your favorite dish on the menu? JF: Another tough one. I do really like the half chicken. Baby back and brisket are right up there too.

Q: How does your position affect your community? JF: I feel that first and most important is we are the neighborhood go-to place for good food and value. LOCALE MAGAZINE 39

A RT U R O CA S I L L A S CREDENTIALS: EXECUTIVE CHEF, ACQUA CALIFORNIA BISTRO & LULU CALIFORNIA BISTRO Q: What is your favorite food memory? Arturo Casillas: One of my favorite food memories was when a friend asked if I could make a traditional Scottish haggis for his birthday. Of course, I said yes, even without having any idea what haggis is. The day of the party one of his family members was very emotional and told me she hadn't had haggis in many years. That moment is one I will never forget, both the joy and memories that food can bring to a person.

Q

Q: What are you most passionate about? AC: I'm most passionate about the business of a restaurant and the adrenaline of a busy day. It always keeps me going. Q: What do you hope guests will take away from eating your dishes and from their dining experience? AC: I want all of our guests at Acqua and Lulu 40 LOCALE MAGAZINE

to be satisfied with their meal and to have had a fun time. We serve smiles at Acqua and there’s always a party at Lulu. Q: How do you think your role as a chef affects your community? AC: I like to use honest foods that are locallysourced, the best ingredients possible and especially sustainable seafood. That gives our guests the best possible dining experience by eating better and healthier foods.

TWO CENTS • The best advice that Arturo has ever received is that nobody is so poor that they have nothing to give, and nobody is so rich that they have nothing to receive. MORE, MORE, MORE • Check out their sister restaurant in Palm Springs, Lulu California Bistro! NATIVE KNOWLEDGE • Acqua California Bistro offers gift cards for that last minute rush when you forgot to buy your loved one something for their special day!

M A R CO AG U I L A R CREDENTIALS: CHEF DE CUISINE, ADOBE GRILL AT THE LA QUINTA RESORT & CLUB Q: Describe your favorite memory of food. Marco Aguilar: Cooking with my grandparents at [the] age of 6. Q: Where does your inspiration come from? MA: My inspiration with food comes from my childhood memories and all the trips and places that I have visited around the world. Q: What kind of experience do you hope your customers will have? MA: I hope they get the feeling of [having] been in Mexico every time they dine here at Adobe Grill. Q: Describe your role in the community? MA: Being a chef is not just about

cooking. I try to coach and mentor my cooks about good behavior, discipline and respect in our kitchen and their own life. My goal is always building a great team with great people. Q: What is your favorite dish on the menu currently? MA: Our tacos. You have to try them! Q: If you could only use three ingredients for your food, what would your choices be and why? MA: Corn to make tortillas, beef to make carne asada and chilies to make salsas. I would choose these ingredients so I can make tacos. Life without tacos is not a life at all.

AT FIRST SIGHT • Marco knew he wanted to cook after he first came to the US to visit his parents and had a summer job in a restaurant that he loved. NATIVE KNOWLEDGE • Tap your foot and shimmy to the live music at Adobe Grill on Fridays and Saturdays from 6-9 p.m.

Q: What is your most memorable moment with food? Gabriel Woo: One of my favorite most recent food memories was eating vongole in Capri, Italy. There is something about having fresh pasta looking out at the sea and smelling the ocean breeze that will stay in my food memory bank forever. Q: Where do you get your inspiration? GW: I get my inspiration through the seasons. What is in season now? What colors would look beautiful together? What cuisine am I leaning towards? What have I been yearning to try? What can I teach my young team? I ask myself all these questions and more when I create my weekly dinner menus. Q: What are you most passionate about? GW: I am most passionate about creating memories through food. I love watching people after dinner. In the beginning, everyone is a little reserved and casual; by the end of service, the communal table is thriving with new acquaintances,

telling stories and having meaningful conversations. I help make that happen over a delicious meal. I’m passionate about the power of food. Q: Describe the experience you hope your guests will have at your restaurant. GW: I hope they take away a food memory. Even if it is just a new flavor combination or a new dish they have never tried. I hope they feel the love and care that went into making their dinner. Q: If you could only use three ingredients, what would they be and why? GW: Shallot, I use it in almost anything I cook. It’s such a good ingredient for a solid foundation; tarragon, I’ve been obsessed with it for a couple years now; vinegar, I love adding vinegar to my dishes.

“All of the food we serve is organic. No chemicals, no preservatives, no processed foods of any kind.” —Josh Pena

On those hot desert afternoons, it’s no wonder that the smoothies and bowls are the most popular. They are made with a combination of fruits and vegetables in a base of either rice, vanillaalmond, coconut or soy milk. You can also get a smoothie made with coconut or filtered water. And whether served in a glass or in a bowl, we suggest digging in with a spoon. In particular, the Blue Coco Smoothie Bowl is a turquoise-hued concoction made with pineapple, banana, coconut nectar, shredded coconut and spirulina. The spirulina gives it that beautiful shade. And you might ask yourself, what is spirulina? It may seem daunting for newbies to the health-scene, but the tasteless, freshwater, blue-green algae is between 50-60 percent protein, is rich in antioxidants and iron, according to Health Line. Founder Josh Pena breaks down the bowlfull of benefits. Raw Remedy “provide[s] fresh, organic and raw plant-based foods that are better for the body while adopting sustainable business practices that benefit the community and planet. Among other benefits, people that adopt a raw, plant-based diet are more regular and don’t experience bloating. They have more energy and they are in a better mood. All of the food we serve is organic. There’s no chemicals, no preservatives and no processed foods coming in or out of our shop of any kind. When you eat processed foods, your body has to burn off the toxic chemicals and preservatives which can cause havoc to the body. Also, the body does not know what to do with some of the chemicals once you ingest them, so they get stored in fat cells.”

Hippocrates once said, “Let your food be your medicine and your medicine be your food.” During the late 1960s and early 1970s, health food stores began popping up all over the country. Among their various products, these stores offered an assortment of raw, organic, unprocessed and in-season fruits and vegetables. Those who shopped at these stores were often referred to, unfortunately, as health-nuts. Well, looks like they were on to something! Fifty years later, the train of thought has shifted and the health craze is in full swing. In this

case, Hippocrates would approve of the medicine disguised as a delicious smoothie bowl. Tucked into a cozy corner in the historic La Plaza in Palm Springs is Raw Remedy Organic Juice and Raw Food Bar. A constant stream of customers stops by to sample and enjoy the creations of founders Josh Pena and Nick Valdez. The menu features delicious veggie burgers, raw, plant-based tacos, wraps, salads and gazpachos. Customers can be seen enjoying their nutritious grub at tables inside the restaurant, at the counter overlooking La Plaza or outside in the sun, soaking in Palm Springs’ perfect weather and vibrant lifestyle.

The flavor of the Blue Coco is both tart and sweet. The texture is icy, creamy and refreshing, similar to a sherbet and a sorbet. The bowl is topped with granola and coconut nectar, and the finished product is laden with fresh seasonal fruit, edible flowers, chia and hemp seeds, and so much more. It is almost too pretty to eat! “Unlike most juice bars, our bowls come fully loaded and made with lots of love! We never add ice or liquids to our smoothies so you’re always getting 100 percent fruits and veggies,” said Founder Nick Valdez. At the core of Raw, the philosophy states that they want to educate the younger generation on eating healthy. “We have noticed a lot of parents are now switching to a more plant-based diet and raise their children accordingly. We have also increased our visibility by participating in all three Certified Farmers Markets in the Coachella Valley and we conduct private events around the valley as well to promote our cause...We get a lot of elderly people who have been sent by their doctors, believe it or not. They have been told to get off the red meat and cut out sugar and processed foods entirely... People are finally waking up and thinking about what they are putting in their bodies,” he adds. Hippocrates had it right, and we prescribe this smoothie bowl for a step in the right (healthy) direction.

Coffeehouses and boba spots seem to be everywhere you look these days. Although you might think that they’re all the same, the people featured here will tell you the shops are as much about the community it serves as it is about the drinks. Each of these distinctive places attract and serve a clientele that is more like family than customers. Read on to hear from seven local experts that love coffee and boba as much as you do.

GOOD DOG • Customs Coffee loves to see pups of every shape and size, and sell treats for dogs. SONG BIRD • Danielle loves to sing to her own tune. She can often be heard singing as she cleans and goes about her daily duties. NATIVE KNOWLEDGE • Need a laugh? Ask the baristas at Custom Coffee for one of their “bad dad jokes.”

DA N I E L L E CA R D I N A L E CREDENTIALS: BARISTA, CUSTOMS COFFEE Q: What makes your coffeehouse stand out? Danielle Cardinale: We do not source from large corporations. We support local businesses. We only serve fresh, organic Joshua Tree Coffee Company. Our pastries come from L’Artisan Valley Baking Company, located in Thousand Palms, and Swiss Donuts in Palm Desert. Not only do we serve our customers from this shop, we also serve our coffee to our neighboring restaurants, Reservoir and Draughtsman.

Q

Q: How would you describe your atmosphere? DC: The atmosphere is almost like a permanent vacation. We have people from all over the world enjoying the Palm Springs lifestyle while also enjoying the universal language of good coffee and good food.

Q: What is your favorite drink on the menu? DC: Most of my favorite drinks are not actually on the menu. I love to make my own creations everyday based on how I am feeling. When it is cold I love to steam cinnamon and salt into my caramel lattes. When it is hot I love

to melt agave and honey into my espresso then pour it over cold, vanilla flavored soy milk. Q: What inspires you? What are you most passionate about? DC: Inspiration for me comes from my music and everyday life. I am always trying to create something different whether it is a new coffee drink or something as simple as a different way to do my hair and makeup. Q: How did you get involved in the industry? DC: I first got involved in this industry with Starbucks. I worked for them for over three years. At first it was the best time of my life. After a while I realized that I wasn’t happy making caramel frappuccinos with extra caramel and whipped cream everyday. I wanted something more. I wanted to create. I wanted to experiment. I wanted to remind myself what real coffee is and Customs Coffee allows me to do that.

K R I ST I N M AY CREDENTIALS: OWNER, VINTAGE COFFEE HOUSE Q: What makes your coffeehouse stand out? Kristin May: Personalized service. We know our customers by name. We know what they like, and many times have their coffee ready for them before they get out of the car. We do not have a big turn over of staff so everyone knows everyone. Q: How would you describe your atmosphere? KM: Homey and clean. I would compare it to the bar on the television program ‘Cheers.’ We have the same charm. Our customers call themselves grandma and grandpa to my three

children. We have college students who sit in here and do schoolwork all day long. It is a home away from home. Q: What is most fun and rewarding aspect of your job? KM: I am doing this because I am single mother. My sons wanted to work but they couldn’t get jobs that would work around their school and sports schedules. My daughter can come here after school and do her homework. I can teach her that she can do anything she wants to do. I can be with my kids. Q: What is your favorite drink on the menu and why?

KM: I am an Americano drinker because I can taste the hues and depth of the coffee. Americano coffee is espresso and steamed hot water. It keeps the coffee in its original flavor. Whenever I have coffee some place else I always have an Americano, that way I can compare the quality of our coffee. Q: Why did you name you coffeehouse Vintage Coffee? KM: Vintage Coffee was the name when I bought the place, but we do use an old, classic, vintage machine. Our coffee is hand pulled, hand pressed and hand poured vintage style.

BIG NAME • Sylvester Stallone was the first customer in the shop. NATIVE KNOWLEDGE • Vintage Coffee House is the unofficial coffeehouse for Coachella Fest. Located just a few miles from the polo grounds, Vintage Coffee averages 2,000 customers a day during the two weekends of the concert.

Q: How would you describe your atmosphere? Esteban Cartagena: Our atmosphere is very, very friendly and inviting. We are always making sure our customers are taken care of and make sure they have an amazing experience from the moment they walk in until the moment they walk out. Q: What is the most fun and rewarding part about your job? EC: Getting to know and interact with a good variety of people from our regular customers, my coworkers and visitors from all over. I want to mention that our regular customers have made a good impact in our Koffi family. We always appreciate your presence and the good energy you bring to the coffee family. I hope you know who you are. Q: How is your business involved in the community? EC: We support our communities in so many ways. In each of our locations we have an open community board for people

to post their ideas, upcoming events and gatherings. We have also been very consistent with our support of the many humanitarian organizations from cancer awareness to the AIDS Walk. Q: What inspires you? What are you most passionate about? EC: I have a lot of passion for learning and teaching. I enjoy taking different ideas and perfecting them and taking it to the next level. I am very passionate with whatever I create or do. There is always something to be learned from everybody I meet and that is one thing I like about my job. Q: How did you get into the industry? EC: Luckily, Koffi opened the doors for me the minute I decided to join the family. I think that speaks for how involved Koffi is with the community. As a good old Koffi friend said, ‘Teamwork makes the dream work,’ and that has been our motto at Koffi. LOCALE MAGAZINE 61

Q: What makes your coffeehouse stand out in Coachella Valley? Kelly Segré: We are an eclectic mix. We differ from your standard, sterile coffeehouse. We are surrounded by books, music and art. We believe in serving good quality coffee. Our goal is not only to serve good coffee and tea but to create an environment in which people feel comfortable and can be inspired. Q: How would you describe the atmosphere at Gré Coffeehouse and Art Gallery? KS: I am influenced by the midcentury beatnik culture and the coffeehouse scene. We are the only independent coffeehouse in Downtown

Palm Springs to be open in the evening. Gré Coffeehouse is a place for creative people to enjoy contemporary photography and our Saturday open mic night. Q: How is your business involved in the community? KS: The main way we are involved in the community is that we foster a safe place for creative people of all ages to express themselves. All of our community events are free and open to the public. Q: How did you get involved in the industry? KS: As a teenager in the early 1990s, my friends and I spent countless late night hours in coffee shops. When I moved to Palm Springs, I noticed the coffeehouse culture

was severely lacking. With the help of my childhood friend, I created a place that I would have loved to go to when I was in my late teens and early 20s. Q: What inspires you? What are you the most passionate about? KS: Photography! I have been a professional photographer for 20 years. My coffeehouse, Gré Coffeehouse and Art Gallery, is named after my photography business. My nickname was Gré because of my love for black and white photography and the letters g-r-é are the last three letters of my last name. More than anything I am inspired by the creative people who come here and strive to change the world through art.

GAMES AND GOOD READS • Gré hosts a weekly board game night Mondays at 6:30 p.m. If you lose a game you have to write something with colored chalk on the black boards that line the walls. They also have a large collection of novels for their book exchange. SIDE HUSTLE • Kelly is also a photographer! You can check out her photography at Ksegre. com. COMPLEMENT THAT HANDLEBAR MUSTACHE OR FEDORA WITH THIS COCKTAIL WRITTEN BY: QUINTAN VALLES PHOTOGRAPHY BY: JANE CHOUTEAU

We hipsters like the simple things; clothing, meals and the occasional cocktail—oh, but only if they’re organic, handcrafted, locally-sourced and infused with exotic goodies! Nobody understands the hipster palate like 4 Saints, located at the tippy-top of the Kimpton Rowan Palm Springs. And lead bartender Jeff Cleveland is the hipster whisperer when it comes to creating craft cocktails with flavors that will knock your Birkenstocks off. The Vista Chino cocktail is the perfect combination of elegance and simplicity for both the casual libation seeker and the snobbiest of cocktail “sipsters.” The choice liquor in this beverage is rum, but not just any rum (hold on to your fedoras), this is fig-infused rum. And what infused liquor is complete without a house-made syrup? Jeff mixes in syrup made with cinnamon, vanilla and honey with the rum, which is then shaken with lime juice and strained into the glass. Next, the mixture is topped with Prosecco and garnished with an orange peel. Of all the tasty ingredients we have here, it’s the fig that really gives this

drink its zing, as Jeff states, “I really like the element that the figs bring to it. Figs are not something that people are accustomed to eating every day.” He continues, “it’s an ingredient in the drink that you may not immediately identify, but it’s what really gives the drink its character.” Inspired by the classic Air Mail cocktail, this elevated version takes its name from the well-known Vista Chino Street in Palm Springs. Jeff chose this name because after enjoying a classic Air Mail at Workshop Kitchen + Bar while on vacation, Jeff and his wife pulled their car over on Vista Chino and had a conversation that ultimately led to them moving to Palm Springs from Milwaukee, WI. So what is the best way to enjoy this drink, according to its creator? Jeff explains, “If I finished a meal here at 4 Saints and I did not save room for dessert, but I wanted one more thing,” he continues, “the richness and decadence of the flavors in the drink would be something nice to finish the meal with.” So the next time you are at 4 Saints, take Jeff’s advice and skip the sweets and instead, pop open that Prosecco and make The Vista Chino your “saintly” treat.

The Vista Chino Ingredients • Fig-Infused Rum • Cinnamon, Vanilla, Honey Syrup • Lime Juice • Prosecco • Orange Peel Garnish On the Rocks • They have a great list of vermouths and fortified and aromatized wines to stimulate the palate, and allow guests to enjoy a drink the 4 Saints way. Native Knowledge • Get a panoramic 270-degree view of the desert while you dine on the rooftop at 4 Saints.

FIND, or “Food In Need of Distribution” is the only food bank in the Coachella Valley area. Operating for over 30 years, FIND Food Bank strives to provide quality meals to those who suffer from food insecurity, or people who don’t have access to safe and healthy meals at all times. Unlike a soup kitchen, FIND Food Bank is the regional hub that makes sure an adequate amount of food is available for their partnering agencies that directly distributes food to those in need.

With a focus on relieving hunger and its causes through awareness, education and by getting the community involved, FIND partners with agencies to offer all manner of food distributions, from afterschool programs to neighborhood pantries. They also offer a CalFresh Outreach and Case Management Program as another way to fight hunger. The CalFresh Program, formerly known as food stamps, connects food-insecure families to additional nutrition resources for their household, by way of an EBT card used at local stores.

Lisa believes that food insecurities are a community problem and therefore should be a communitybased solution.

Although FIND Food Bank President and CEO Lisa Houston is resigning her position with the food bank to take on a new role as Chief Operating Officer of the Desert Healthcare District and Foundation—a major donor to FIND Food Bank—she is excited to continue on her journey to relieve hunger. “The FIND Board of Directors is very excited about Ms. Houston’s new endeavor with the Desert Healthcare District, as it will continue her good work addressing not only food insecurity, but the overall importance of individual and community health. We know she will always have a special place in her heart for FIND and we will always have a special love for her and her passion to help others,” said FIND Board Chair Deborah McGarrey. 74 LOCALE MAGAZINE

To make matters worse in our slice of the Southern California desert, high summer temperatures mean tight budgets and hungry kids with little access to food when they’re out of school. FIND and their partners stepped in to offer Kids Summer Club, a 10-week program that distributes nutrient-rich food to over 6,000 kids as well as their siblings including those at home who might not be able to participate. But they don’t stop there— FIND also partners with some area schools during the year to offer a free mini farmers market for students.

Far and Wide For areas of the desert that are more difficult to reach, FIND Food Bank uses a Mobile Pantry Truck, a gift from Kraft Foods. Serving several locations, FIND is able to deliver to those underserved areas on a monthly basis.

Lisa believes that food insecurity is a community problem and therefore should have a community-based solution. During her eight years at FIND, she explains the importance of the organization as a tool to assist with this solution by getting awareness of the problem back into the daily lives and conversations of the community. “We should pay attention to one another,” she said. Coming soon to FIND is the Virtual Food Drive. Rather than carrying canned food with you to the donation bin, you’ll be able to purchase healthy food through FIND’s website that will then be distributed to their partner agencies and families in need. Most may consider homelessness as a problem among individuals who need food, but it extends to recent divorcees who are now single and have to provide for their families, a family who may have a spouse who came up with a sudden illness, working families who hold down several jobs to make ends meet and even seniors who are raising grandchildren. Financial strains may affect anyone at any given time, and FIND offers ways to assist those experiencing food insecurity. “Meals or food [goes] beyond nutritional value; it brings us together,” says Lisa. It’s a team effort, and when it comes to solving this issue, we need all hands on deck.

ROOSTER AND THE PIG

Æ First, we headed to Rooster and the Pig. Now, I have to admit that, although I am generally a fan of exotic spices, I have had a small hesitance towards curry in the past. I

I like to consider Palm Springs as my home away from home. Just two hours east of Los Angeles, it’s a desert oasis getaway. I’m obsessed with the picturesque desert, mountain landscapes and the unmatched midcentury architecture that lines every street. It’s a perfect vacation spot for me where design meets destination and everything about it says, “Here—lay in this chaise lounge by the pool while I get you a piña colada and a magazine.” Of course, not to be outshined by the scenery and cocktails and perhaps more important than anything else, Palm Springs has some of the best places to eat, which I just have to tell you about!

“The gift of having a vision and seeing it through is worth all the stress and work.” —Tara Lazar

TARA LAZAR IS SERVING UP FRESH FOOD AT CITI TASTE OF TENNIS WRITTEN BY: ASHLEE POLAREK

When it comes to delicious food and being surrounded by some of the best players in tennis, Citi Taste of Tennis is the place to be. The evening offers attendees the opportunity to mingle with tennis stars and enjoy signature food and drinks from local restaurateurs kicking off the BNP Paribas Open in the city of Indian Wells. The popular foodie event benefits United Way of the Desert, a charity focused on ending poverty in the Coachella Valley.

W

Tara Lazar brings brightness to Palm Springs, much like her favorite ingredient lemon juice, which brings brightness to any dish. The Citi Taste of Tennis regular and founder of F10 Creative—a collection of four restaurants, a bar and a catering service—chatted all things entrepreneurship, food and tennis with us gearing up for the event. Before she was a restaurateur, this Palm Springs native spent her days playing tennis at Mission Hills. Now, she’s started her own business, and even with the workload that comes with it, Lazar believes it’s worth the squeeze: “The gift of having a vision and seeing it through is worth all the stress and work.”

Located at the Hyatt Regency Indian Wells Resort & Spa, Citi Taste of Tennis gives attendees the chance to talk with their favorite pros from the BNP Paribas Open while enjoying delicious food and drinks from various restaurants in the greater Palm Springs area.

Tara Lazar

Penny and Judi Lerner, the producers of Citi Taste of Tennis, are a female power duo that Lazar speaks highly of. “Penny and Judi use their gut, expert networking and compassion to create these smoothly run events that give back to our favorite charities,” says Lazar. “I think women add a different perspective to decision making. Women seem to have better intuition and as an entrepreneur—you wing it quite a bit, so it’s really helpful to have a good gut.” So what does Lazar suggest filling that gut with after a long night of tennis? “A margarita, on the rocks, salt on the rim—it does wonders for your second serve.”

Her business model is simple. Lazar thinks about what she wants to eat that day and then works it into her menus. “Our business looks like 75 percent being surrounded by yummy food, 22 percent fun coworkers and a three percent serious work time,” she says. When she's not enjoying a poolside cocktail or camping in Joshua Tree, she can be found at Citi Taste of Tennis, sharing a bite and enjoying the company. “It’s nice to participate in activities that bring the community together that also have a charitable benefit,” says Lazar. “So many of our regulars are there, so many fellow chefs, and tennis is in our DNA.” CITI TASTE OF TENNIS www.cititasteoftennis.com Photoshoot Location: MR. “We utilize functional medicine that’s non-invasive with a more lifestyle therapy focused approach instead of the use of prescription meds all the time.”—Dr. Sonja Fung

Guac This Way Medicine isn’t the only thing Dr. Fung is passionate about; she’s also a sucker for mom-and-pop taco shops. “You know, the hole in the wall places.” It’s California; we feel you doc—and we’re adding guac! Climate Control Dr. Fung loves desert living and appreciates the sunny, dry climate and scenery. And mountains are a must, as she was born in Portland, Oregon.

Meet Dr. Sonja Fung, one awesome Primary Care (and cat loving) Naturopathic Doctor, who can help you establish what she calls “the building blocks to help balance your body.” She’s the ‘keep it real’ doc who has no shame in asking, “Did you poop today? Because hey, elimination is important! You can rebuild your system that’s not working properly just by changing your diet. Did you drink enough water? Bring it back to the basics.”

Dr. Fung works with all ages, be it newborns or seniors, and multiple conditions including but not limited to cancer or the everyday run down and fatigued symptoms. From preventative care to sports medicine, she’s got your back, bones and pretty much all your joints covered. Some popular services bring patients in weekly, like the B-vitamin injections, while more chronic diseased patients are in the office two to three times a week. Let’s be honest, all around wellness is so necessary no matter what stage of life you’re in or what condition ails you.

M

Whether your lifestyle entails being up early in the SoCal surf or slaying all day in the office, when troubled waters arise, consider naturopathy and chill. Dr. Fung explains, “Some people don’t know what naturopathic doctors are really about. We’re primary care doctors with a holistic viewpoint. We utilize functional medicine that’s non-invasive with a more lifestyle therapy focused approach instead of the use of prescription meds all the time.”

Let’s be honest, all around wellness is so necessary no matter what stage of life you’re in or what condition ails you.

Another go-to treatment for Dr. Fung’s patients is Regenerative Injection Therapy, which is a treatment for chronic pain caused by unhealed joint injuries. “The body stimulates its own healing abilities...if you put a cortisone injection in a joint, it’s just a temporary ‘kill the pain’ type of fixer-upper. It’s just masking the problem; my goal is to fix the problem,” she stressed. When asked what inspires her in the medical/naturopathic field, Dr. Fung explained that “I’ve always been interested in the body and medicine. Growing up with a family that used Western medicine as well as Chinese traditional medicine, I noticed when I got sick, I got Chinese remedies from my grandmother. We would go to Chinatown and get bark [and] herbs and brew medicinal tea or

soup, and she would make me drink it. It worked better than antibiotics, [and] I would think ‘Wow! All I have to do is drink this horrible tasting medicine and I’m better!’” When Dr. Fung hit naturopathic medical school, she honored both traditional and conventional medicine and her passions just leveled up. When she’s not off duty and being a foodie with her hubby and her two cats, you’ll catch her rock climbing and hopefully not blowing out her knee while doing it. Check out the video she recently posted on social media where she got injured and is getting regenerative injections by her fellow Live Well doc, Dr. Brian Myers. “If I get injured, I have to follow my own medicine,” she says. There’s something so refreshing about a clinic that offers a variety of adjunctive treatments, including acupuncture, Reiki therapy and stress management by a doctor who supports and knows how to take a spoonful or injection of her own medicine. With that in mind, whether feeling like the flu is creeping in or just generally feeling run down, hit the problem head-on at Live Well Clinic. It is the best way to reboot, recharge and revitalize your system, be it for maintenance, prevention or healing a multitude of conditions. It’s a win-win. So, here’s to a happy and healthy year!

She is also a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery (AACS) the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons (ACOS) and the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). Dr. Lombardo stands firm that she is an artist first. Before attending medical school, Dr. Lombardo received an art degree from DePaul University in Chicago. She decided to pivot her career when, during her surgery rotation in medical school, she participated in a surgery to restore a young man’s face that was altered from a car accident with a semi-truck. “After art school, I had this epiphany to combine art and science together. I don’t just nip-and-tuck, but put all of my art training and medical knowledge into one, which I think separates me from others,” Dr. Lombardo said. Since this epiphany, she has been in the business of art-meets-medicine for nearly 10 years.

Native Knowledge Dr. Lombardo sticks to paleo cooking and works out at the local kinetics gym where she was awarded Athlete of The Year.

WHEN TOMMY HAAS FIRST PICKED UP A TENNIS RACKET AT FOUR YEARS OLD TO TRAIN WITH HIS FATHER, HE MAY NOT HAVE KNOWN THAT THIS GAME WOULD SHAPE THE COURSE OF HIS LIFE. HE PROBABLY ALSO DID NOT KNOW THAT WHEN HE FIRST HIT THAT BALL, HE WOULD GROW TO LOVE THE GAME THAT WOULD BRING HIM 563 PROFESSIONAL WINS, NINE INJURY-RELATED SURGERIES AND, OF COURSE, A SILVER MEDAL AT THE 2000 SYDNEY OLYMPICS. WE DON’T ALWAYS KNOW WHERE OUR PASSIONS WILL TAKE US, BUT FOR TOMMY HAAS, BY AGE SEVEN, HE KNEW THAT HE AND THAT RACKET WOULD BE TOGETHER FOR A VERY LONG TIME.

NATIVE KNOWLEDGE • Haas recommends hitting up some of the restaurants located at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden for some good eats. “Nobu or Spago are just incredible. The fact that you can have world class food here at a tennis tournament is amazing.”

106 LOCALE MAGAZINE

“I WASN’T SURE ABOUT THE OLYMPICS. LOOKING BACK, WITH ALL OF THE INJURIES THAT I WENT THROUGH, I’M NOT SO SURE IF MY BODY WASN’T DESIGNED TO BE A PROFESSIONAL ATHLETE OR IF I WAS JUST TRAINING WRONG.” —TOMMY HAAS

Interestingly, Haas’ first athletic endeavor was not tennis. The current BNP Paribas Open Tournament Director and former World No. 2 practiced martial arts before he ever picked up that racket. Haas explains, “My father was a tennis teacher. He did judo for a very long time, so he actually put me in judo first because that was his main passion.” It wasn’t until Haas was hanging around his dad to watch him teach at the tennis club that he met his true calling. “When I was about four years old, I was introduced to playing tennis,” he said. “I had a small wooden tennis racket and a tennis ball and they would tell me ‘go to the wall and detain yourself,’ and that’s how I started getting into tennis.” This is where Haas began showing some impressive skill, and it started to become clear that he belonged on a tennis court. Once I was seven years old I knew that I wanted to be a tennis professional,” he said. After this, Haas’ family made his dream their dream and began to nurture his talent. After moving from his home in Hamburg, Germany to enroll in a tennis academy in Florida, Haas made his professional debut in 1996 in Indianapolis when he was only 18. “I remember they told me that I would get a wild card,” recalls Haas. “I was over the moon. I remember playing my first round against Dick

Norman. I beat him and then I beat Renzo Furlan from Italy, then Mark Woodforde,” he continues, “and then, all of a sudden, I’m in the quarters and I’m playing Pete Sampras, who I had seen at the academy when I was 13 or 14 years old when he was training in Florida. He was number one in the world at that time and I was like ‘Wow, this is amazing.’” At the age of 18, Haas was acing his way to success, serving to some of his childhood idols and making the world of tennis his home. “I was so excited,” he said, “I got some ATP points, and my ranking went up and then I played the qualifying for the U.S. Open a few weeks later,” he recalls, “I played one of my childhood idols, Michael Stich. I lost to him in a tough first round, but those were the few weeks where I was like ‘I think I’ve arrived.’” And arrive he did. Only four years later, Haas’ impressive skill was earning him a spot in the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Up to this point, he had been hard at work getting his professional stats up and playing some incredible matches that had him in the top 10 for the very first time by 1999. However, after so many intense matches and a training regimen that would have you out of breath just thinking about it, Haas faced a grim reality that all professional athletes face at some point in their careers; Haas entered the millennium with an injury that

threatened to smash the possibility of the Olympics for him. “I wasn’t sure about the Olympics,” says Haas, “looking back, with all of the injuries that I went through, I’m not so sure if my body wasn’t designed to be a professional athlete or if I was just training wrong,” he laughed. For athletes like Haas, who have been wielding a racket before they could see over the net, the body is bound to have some serious aches and pains. “I couldn’t practice much before and I was still unsure about competing because of my injury,” says Haas, “but most of my friends and family said, ‘Look, this is the Olympics. It’s going to be an amazing experience, seeing all of the other athletes from around the world and getting the chance to go for a medal.’” So with the love and support of those around him, Haas went on to compete in Sydney. Now being the humble champ that he is, Haas never in his career had designs of snagging one of those pretty Olympic medals, but his tremendous skill and determination won him silver anyway. “I’m happy I went. Just to know that I got a medal made me so happy, I was over the moon. It was a great experience,” he remarked. “And now it’s one of the nicest things to have in your trophy case.” Haas continues, “Now, when my kids see the Olympics and my

He explains, “I always like to feel comfortable on and off the court. oldest daughter says to me, ‘You have a medal!’—That’s really special to me.” Winning an Olympic medal might have most of us ready to hang up the racket, kick up our feet and call it a job well done (like, really well done). Not for Haas. There were still more topspins, backhands and matches to smash before the rally was over. “I looked at [the Olympics] as another tournament,” says Haas. “Of course it was different, there’s no points or prize money, it’s more about the history and being a part of the Olympian tradition. It’s really cool to look back and know that I have it.” Haas was absolutely killing the tennis game. He was shredding every court that he set his swift feet upon and the future was looking bright. But with all the vigor and determination within Haas’ spirit, his body just couldn’t seem to keep up. Haas would eventually undergo nine injury-related surgeries. That’s nine reasons for the average person to call it quits, but Mr. Haas is not your average person. “Sometimes you don’t know how you’re going to react to something in life until it happens to you,” he said. “In 2001 and 2002 I was playing at my best, I was thinking that this was my time to win a Grand Slam, and then I started having issues with my shoulder.” Haas discovered after many trips to the doctor that the issue was a torn ligament

that required surgery and would put him out of commission for eight to 10 months. In the tennis world, that's a lifetime, he says. “I have seen other players undergo surgeries like that and they didn’t really stay on tour very long after that. I thought this could possibly end my career.” The thought of this must have been devastating. But looking again to his incredible family and friends for support, as well as having an abnormal amount of determination and drive to get back on the court, Haas made his way back to the top again. “I had good people around me and I stayed positive.” Haas was on the road to recovery when, as he explains, “I started practicing again after the first surgery,” he recalled, “and of course, something felt wrong again and I needed another surgery.” On some level we can all relate to the feeling of being knocked down and getting back up only to be knocked down again. For Haas, his career depended on him getting back up. “I really thought this might be the end,” he said. “With some ambition, belief and a little bit of luck that my shoulder held up, I came back and by 2004 I was back in the top 20. It was a great ‘I’m back’ feeling. I knew that this is where I belonged.” The rocky road of injuries and recoveries is a road that Haas became very familiar

“THINGS HAPPEN FOR A REASON, AND IF I DIDN’T HAVE THAT BALANCE WITH MY WIFE AND HAVING A FAMILY AND DIDN’T HAVE THAT FOCUS OR MENTALITY SHIFTING TO BECOMING A FATHER AND WANTING MY DAUGHTER TO SEE ME PLAY, WHO KNOWS, EVERYTHING COULD HAVE CHANGED.” —TOMMY HAAS

with, and it was always those closest to him that kept him moving forward. “I give a big shout out to everyone in my life at that time for always keeping my mind hungry and encouraging me to come back no matter what,” says Haas. This was especially true for Haas when he started a family of his own. Now a father of two, Haas reflects on how the birth of his first daughter motivated him to keep going even in the face of adversity. “Having a family changes everything. You can’t prepare yourself for it,” he said. “Having a daughter and a family gave me the motivation to keep playing. Things happen for a reason, and if I didn’t have that balance with my wife and having a family and didn’t have that focus or mentality shifting to becoming a father and wanting my daughter to see me play, who knows, everything could have changed.” But like Haas said, “things happen for a reason.” Haas continued to be one of the most exciting and recognized names in tennis and became number 12 in the world by the end of 2013. “I would have never thought in a million years that I would be playing ‘till I was 39 on tours— it’s ridiculous,” he laughed. Haas is ready to spend more time with his family and seeing what life after tennis looks like. “The fact that I don’t have to train hard anymore, be on a certain diet or get up

and go to bed at a certain time is a whole new environment for me,” he said. “I’ll continue to play as much as I can because I absolutely enjoy going out there.” Now in his second year as Tournament Director of the BNP Paribas Open here in Indian Wells, Haas looks forward to continuing this position as retirement approaches. “Each year we strive to build on our success and improve the fan experience at the BNP Paribas Open. I’m excited and eager for my second year as Tournament Director and can’t wait for our fans to experience the improvements and upgrades we’ve made to the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. The action on and off the court this March will once again remind people why we call our home Tennis Paradise,” added Haas. “I’m stoked about the idea of helping out here and hopefully do a good job as tournament director,” he says. “I want to keep coming up with ideas that make us unique here as this event keeps growing, progressing as one of the top tournaments to participate in. Every time I’m here, I just want to stay.” Yes, the desert can have that effect on people, and we can only hope that Tommy Haas decides to make this his home in the future; we’ll be sure to keep the courts warm for him.

5 Tips from Tommy for Enjoying the BNP Paribas Open 1. Game. Set. Match! When the best tennis players in the world descend on the desert, you never know what you’ll see. The competition is fierce and the serves are hot. 2. Come hungry! This is not your typical stadium fare. The Indian Wells Tennis Garden serves up world-class food prepared by legendary chefs like Wolfgang Puck and Nobu Matsuhisa. 3. Practice, practice, practice! Stake out your spot at the practice courts and see tennis legends up close and personal. 4. Enjoy the views! The Indian Wells Tennis Garden is one of the most scenic sporting venues in the world. Take a look and see why it’s called Tennis Paradise! 5. Bring a jacket! Nights can get chilly in the desert, but you won’t want to miss a moment of the magical evenings, complete with tennis under the lights and live music around the grounds.

EMPIRE POLO CLU B E Q U E ST R I AN P OLO

Native Knowledge: This top-notch polo facility is the same venue for the Coachella Music Festival. Whether your head-banging or polo-trotting, these grounds should be a must on your places to visit in the desert.

DO’S AND DON’TS

1 Do wear sturdy, comfortable shoes.

2 Do pretend like you’re in England. This activity is a little challenging. Not only because of the hand-eye coordination equestrian polo requires, but mostly because you are riding a giant animal while trying to hit a ball between two posts—not easy! “This will change your life forever,” says polo instructor Jessica Bailey. “As soon as you get out there and start feeling confident and start having that connection with the horse running down the field, you’re going to get hooked.” It also helps to have a sturdy pair of shoes with some kind of heel to prevent any slipping in the stirrups of the saddle. After that, just grab the reins, let the horse do the work and have some fun with it!

PRO TIPS

1 Don’t fret if you’re a newbie; head towards the back until you’re comfortable.

2 Listen to a yoga-inspired playlist before going in.

Find your center with yoga/meditation teacher Paul Penners. What makes this yoga experience so unique is the beautiful and quiet desert surroundings. “Here in the desert, it is a completely different experience. There is not one traffic light, there’s space and mountains, it’s the ideal place to practice yoga and meditation,” explains Penners. The lack of hustle and bustle outside helps to calm your mind, which is surprisingly difficult to do while holding a warrior pose. All you will need for this activity is stretchy clothes and some positive desert vibes. Namaste.

From metallics to mirrors, contemporary kitchens have been on trend watch for homeowners looking to upgrade their kitchen with a new flare. Although this trend may seem not easily mastered, H3K Design broke it down so you can design your kitchen with this trend in mind. Owners Howard Hawkes and Kevin Kemper said, “We love seeing new combinations of different styles, and there seems to be a trend to mix modern and traditional looks.” From composite stone and countertops filled with glitter, to stainless steel finishes and exposed elements, here’s how you can bring this style into your home.

SO MOD “The biggest advantage of stainless steel kitchens is durability; for clients who cook for themselves or guests most days, there really is no better choice. Up and Coming Currently, KUD Properties is working on developments that would allow them to build more Desert Eichler homes in a neighborhood. KUD Properties embraces quality service, attention to detail and a unique marketing approach capped off with a good oldfashioned hustle for every real estate client. With offices based in the heart of Palm Desert, Troy Kudlac, founder and broker at KUD Properties and Ross Stout, agent, pride themselves on honesty and integrity as their number one priority. Both self-starters, family men and former athletes, they understand that it takes drive and determination to run a thriving and successful business.

“We found a niche in midcentury modern homes.”— T R OY K U D L AC

Q: How did you meet and what inspired you to start KUD Properties? Troy Kudlac: I started KUD back in 2010, at the time the real estate market was depressed, and we saw an opportunity to invest in midcentury homes. Fast forward to 2013, Ross and I met and we had a ton of things in common and became great friends. Four months later, Ross called me and mentioned the timing was right in his business to transition and he was ready to move over to KUD. Ross Stout: I had been in real estate for four years, I entered the market at the same time Troy started his residential business. The timing was perfect, there was an opening for Troy to have me, and it worked out perfect. We saw an opportunity to be able to expand our reach in the community by starting a team this year. We have brought on like-minded people who share the same values and work ethic with a goal of expanding the brokerage and the product we bring to the market. Our team has increased from Troy and myself to a team of eight agents in the last few years, and most of the team joining us in the last six months. KUD Properties Residential Brokerage looks to make a big splash in 2018! Q: Give a brief background on KUD Properties and why it’s a notable business in the desert. TK: KUD Properties as we know it today started in 2015 as we found a niche in midcentury modern homes. We set ourselves apart here in the desert by being advisors to clients and meeting their needs, not just order takers. RS: We call ourselves ‘real estate consultants;’ we have a great grip on the market. Since I grew up in the desert, I know this place very well. We don’t want to just throw somebody’s house on the market and hope it sells; we have a strategy and purpose behind it. Not all homes here in the desert are midcentury modern. Although that is our passion in our heart of hearts, our ability to sell homes reaches beyond architectural style and we can navigate a client through any

transaction no matter what the home looks like. Our team and myself pride ourselves on being the best we can be for our client no matter what the house looks like or where it is located in the desert. We love our jobs and in turn the service we provide is love for people and real estate.

“We don’t want to just throw somebody’s house on the market and hope it sells; we have a strategy and purpose behind it.” —ROSS STOUT

Q: How do you feel the Desert Eichler style has evolved since you built your first home? TK: The first Desert Eichler is our most iconic house. My contractor, Steve, and I went to the Eichler neighborhood in Orange County, we walked around, knocked on doors and talked to people. We found out what was liked and hated by each owner so we could build on that information and improve the homes. I put on my Joseph Eichler glasses and try to look through the lenses as if he was rebuilding the homes today. He was a successful developer who modified his designs to meet demand and constantly improve, we strive to do the same. RS: The Eichler house in part set the stage for the growth of Palm Springs in the recent years. Q: How would you describe a “Desert Eichler" home to someone who is new to the desert? RS: The appeal is that it takes the classic midcentury architecture from renowned architects and adds today’s finishes and technology. You get a brand-new home that reflects the nostalgia of Palm Springs, the indoor/outdoor lifestyle, and achieves the premium living experience current buyers are looking for. If you want the minimalist midcentury feel, with the luxury upgrades and products of today, you can find them together with a Desert Eichler. Q: Who is your typical buyer of these homes and why? TK: Our clientele is mostly second homeowners looking for an architectural masterpiece in Palm Springs. They grew tired of the costs to renovate an old property and are confident in the quality of a new century modern home. LOCALE MAGAZINE 131
