MAKING THE ISSUE Working with the fabulous clothing line Grayse, which has locations on El Paseo and in Orange County, the styling was flawless. Everything your fashion-filled heart can imagine: sequins, lace, bright colors and shimmer were all showcased in this photoshoot. Stylist and co-owner of Grayse, Kelly Gray, said that this was one of her favorite collaborations. “I was thrilled with the opportunity to collaborate with Locale on this shoot,” added Gray. “It was the perfect combination of lifestyle, fashion and glamour.” It was so fun to have actress, model and rising star Perry Mattfeld grayse our cover for this issue. The soon-to-be “Shameless” star worked with the stylish brand previously and only has positive things to say about them. “I love being a part of a female-forward company. Ms. Kelly and her mother are the anchors behind the garments for women, designed by women,” said Mattfeld in her interview. “Every time I slip into a dress or a pair of Grayse pants, I can physically feel the thought and precision that is put into every stitch, every seam and every drape of magnificent fabric. I feel good in the clothes even before I get to see how beautiful they look on.” The Riviera Palm Springs made for the perfect background for our November cover shoot. Creative, decorative and straight up stylish spaces in almost every nook of the resort created ideal backdrops for celebrity photographer Hamid Moslehi. “It's always fun to work with Kelly, however, this time the model Perry made it more special and the location was the cherry on top,” said Moslehi. Elegant and so Old Hollywood-esque, J Russell! The Salon gave Mattfeld loose waves, sexy side swoops and chic up-dos. With 12 overall looks, we hope you enjoy this exclusive look at the brand’s upcoming clothing line!

A NOTE FROM OUR

PUBLISHER Home has never had an address for me. From my earliest recollection, our family was loading up a moving truck nearly every year. Mostly, we moved around the same city, usually less than a few miles from our previous address. We had a couple of larger moves, including a move my senior year of high school that took me from my home state of California to Flagstaff, AZ. The desire to change homes so rapidly must be genetic. My dad was a mover, his dad was a mover and from what I can tell our family has always been on the move. I have carried on with this tradition, and as of writing this, I am now living in my 35th house in the last 38 years. Home has always been more of a feeling. Home is the way you fold your towels, the way the house smells when your mom is cooking and the people you choose to snuggle on the couch with. Home is where the people I care the most about are. On Oct. 20 my definition of a home will change forever. Even though my fiancé Erin and I have lived together for almost five years and been engaged for more than two, the celebration and ceremony on that date in October will make home mean so much more to me. It will be how we fold our towels, the way our cooking makes the house smell and the snuggles on the couch with our family that will mean home to me for the rest of my life. Erin Frances Price did not exist to me before Feb. 5, 2012. I didn't even know the day before that

I needed her, but in those five years since, she has become my cheerleader, support system, travel partner, stepmom to my children, fiancé and now wife. I now cannot imagine existence without her and any day away from her is a day away from home. Erin, if you are reading this for the first time or the fifth, I hope these words I stole from Edward Sharpe ring true to you and become more real as the years wear on, “Home is wherever I'm with you.ˮ Now, back to our regularly scheduled programming. In this Home///Away issue, we will help you mix up some cocktails (p. 104), upgrade your closet (p. 72) and give you our ABC's of home decor and travel (p. 39). We were lucky enough to catch up with the upcoming star of Showtime’s “Shameless,” Perry Mattfeld (p. 80), witness the beauty of strong women lending each other a hand (p. 150) and get you hungry for some of the best burgers in Palm Springs (p. 99). Within 26 stories, we also talk to one of our favorite local chefs in the friendly confines of their own kitchen (p. 94), give you an insider’s look at Old Town La Quinta (p. 135) and talk with celebrity stylist Salvador Camarena about what inspires him (p. 112). We hope you can find plenty of our suggestions helpful and we hope you tap some of the local companies we recommend in this issue to make your house feel like a home.

Confucius once said “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” These home experts can fully attest to that quote. They use terms like love, passion, mission and enthusiasm to describe their feelings about their work. These amazing artists use their particular talents to transform homes, landscapes and lives, but the common thread is that they feel a unique connection and responsibility to their communities.

Sara and Richard Combs OWNERS, THE JOSHUA TREE HOUSE

Q: Do either of you have a background in interior design, carpentry, renovation or inn management? Sara Combs: We’ve been dating since high school, and within our first six months of dating Rich’s family moved into an early 1900s home that they were renovating. It was definitely a great intro into renovations for both of us. Richard Combs: Our experience with interior design is based on gut instinct. While we both went to a Fine Art school for college, we started along our path of designing spaces by designing for ourselves. Q: What drew you to Joshua Tree and how do you see your role in the community? SC: We were drawn to Joshua Tree after a cross country road trip we took back in 2014. We stayed in Joshua Tree for only one night, but it stuck with us throughout the rest of our travels. As soon as we returned to California, we headed straight for Joshua Tree to become a part

of the community that had felt so friendly, fresh, and inspiring to us. RC: We hope that our role in this community is to connect other artists, designers, writers etc. so that we can collaborate and create amazing things together. Q: Are you looking for another property to revamp? SC: We did actually just acquire a parcel of land, and are excited for the new challenge of building from scratch! Q: How would you describe your decorating style? SC: Our aesthetic celebrates the age and history of both spaces and objects. We love natural materials that get better with age: wood, leather, wool, etc. RC: We also design our spaces around the experiences we hope people will have within them, and love to enhance the simple moments in life: reading a book, having coffee or having a conversation with friends.

DIRECTOR OF COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT, DESERT AIDS PROJECT AND REVIVALS STORES

Q: What inspires you to do this work that benefits so many people? SH: In some ways, Revivals feels like a community center because our volunteers and store employees personally know our customers or have friends who receive health care at DAP. Each of us is inspired by having found our mission match. Q: Tell us about some of the awards Revivals has won. SH: Year after year, Revivals

wins Best Thrift Store in reader generated contests such as Best of the Valley, Best of the Best, Ultimate Pride in The Desert Sun newspaper, Palm Springs Life Magazine and Desert Outlook. This year we were excited to learn we also won Best Furniture Store. Q: Revivals has their own brand. Is it furniture, fashion or both? SH: Mode at Revivals Furniture® is a collection of affordably designed new furniture, lighting, rugs and accessories that fit perfectly in the desert midcentury modern casual lifestyle. Q: How would you describe your role in the community? SH: What I love most about my job is being able to tell the unique stories of Revivals’ customers, volunteers and team members. The store attracts fascinating people who care deeply about the community.

OLD AND NEW • Revivals refers to their design aesthetic ‘mixed-century modern™.’ Where else can you buy an affordable new sofa and pair it with a resale lamp from the ‘60s? BIG TIME • Lindsey Bennett of HGTV’s “Desert Flippers” selected items from the Mode at Revivals Furniture® collection for three episodes that are airing.

OLD SCHOOL • The Joshua Tree House was originally built in 1949 by the same people that built the Joshua Tree Inn. It would have been one of the first houses built in the area. FROM ANOTHER PLANET • Every year in May, the Joshua Tree Retreat Center is host to Contact in the Desert, dedicated to the study of aliens and UFOs. Q: Why is Revivals so much more than a thrift store? Steven Henke: Revivals store is a unique retailer because it benefits the Desert AIDS Project (DAP). Donating, shopping or volunteering at Revivals helps fund primary, dental and behavioral healthcare along with a host of the services that create community and offer support to DAP’s 4,200 clients.

POWER TO THE PEOPLE • The biggest reason clients hire them is because they really are home experts. They make sure that the rooms they do for clients reflects the clients, not them. WORLD TRAVELER • Sullivan has designed kitchens, bathrooms and closets in homes from Los Angeles and Chicago to London and Paris.

Benjamin Sullivan OWNER, KBC BY BENJAMIN SULLIVAN

Q: How long have you been designing kitchens, baths and closets in the desert? Benjamin Sullivan: I have been an interior designer for 20 years plus. I've been designing client kitchens, baths and closets here in the Coachella Valley for 10 years. Q: Do you have a favorite type of design? BS: Design is a funny thing. It changes and evolves with each client's needs. I am known locally for my midcentury/modern designs, though known [nationally] for my classic designs. Q: What do you find most rewarding? BS: Repeat business with former clients. I have so many clients over the 20 years that I still do homes for around the globe. Now I have their children coming to me for their homes. Q: You are a local Palm Springs resident. How do you view your role in the community? BS: Giving back to the community. I buy and source locally. I try to keep as much of my business in the desert as possible. Q: What inspired you to enter the kitchen, bathroom and closet design industry? BS: I was born in the industry. I've designed so many amazing houses over the years, but in every home I enjoyed the design and building of the kitchens, baths and closets more than any other rooms in the house. Those were always the most challenging, so when I moved to the desert, I built my practice on those three areas and to this day, I love my job more than ever. Gary Fredricks OWNER, GARY FREDRICKS LANDSCAPE DESIGN Q: Your designs are breathtaking. What inspires you? What is your design process? Gary Fredricks: Thank you! It is the same as anything else that has to do with art. If I see something that resonates powerfully with me, whether it is a plant, an artifact, a garden composition or a wild landscape, I’ll photograph it, sometimes with a camera and sometimes just in my head and if I’m lucky enough to have the opportunity to replicate it in my work, I will.

Kenn Gray

Q: Tell us how your passion for landscape design affects your role in the community? GF: No matter where I am living, I try somehow to be involved in the aesthetics of my community. I just completed a three-year term as a member of the Architectural Advisory Committee for the city of Palm Springs. I’m currently on the board of directors and the landscape committee for my homeowner’s association. Q: You have designed gardens for homes from many different

climates. How does the climate influence your design? GF: Climate determines the plant palette I can work with. It also sets the tone for how and how often the outside space is used. Is it purely a garden space or will it be used for recreation, dining, entertaining, etc? Q: You seem to have a gift for creating outdoor living spaces that incorporate indoor space and natural surroundings. How did that evolve? GF: After my first time visiting English gardens, I was particularly struck by how many were organized into garden rooms. I was impressed how the transition from one room to the next dramatically increased the visual impact of each room. That impression stayed with me and still influences much of my work. Q: What fun facts can you share with us about your work? GF: Ellen DeGeneres showed her house on her TV show. She is strolling through an alley of potted olive trees I placed outside. She was picking dollar bills off them and calling them her money tree. SHHHH! • After a completed project, Fredricks found out that Joan Rivers was a prospective buyer, so he and his employee hid in a bedroom closet hoping to hear some of her famous wit.

Morraika Simonds

OWNER, AN INTERIOR MOTIVE DESIGNS LLC Q: How would you describe your style? Morraika Simonds: Eclectic! I like many different styles, but it is not about what I like. It is what my clients want for their homes. My strength is to take their style and make a cohesive design come to fruition.

Vincent Battaglia

FOUNDER AND OWNER, RENOVA SOLAR

Q: What inspired you to get into the solar energy business? Vincent Battaglia: That essentially goes back to when I lived in Russia. I saw the waste and I knew there were better ways to use energy without so much waste of natural resources and electricity. Q: Your company is young—founded in 2006— and you have already won many awards. Will you tell us about some of them? VB: It makes me happy to hear us be called a young company. Four years is the average for a solar company. I like the recognition, but I use it as a motivator. My greatest honor was to receive Dealer of the Year from Sun Power. We use their modules. Of the 452 dealers, we were dealer of the year and it is great to receive that recognition from our peers. I was a finalist last year in the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the year award for the Inland Empire and Orange County. Q: It is fascinating that you envisioned Renova Solar as your Master's thesis. Can you tell us more about that and did the thesis eventually become your book Cut the Cord? VB: Yes. In 2007 there was so much misinformation about solar energy, batteries, our right to use the sun and energy independence. So, I started to write notes about

the horrible business models of the energy companies, microgrids and batteries in the home. Eventually, I had so many notes I had to cut them down and turned them into my book. If anyone would like to learn more, they can reach out to me at Renova Solar, and I will send them a copy free of charge. Q: You emphasize that you are a local company. How do you see your role in the community? VB: I want this community be proud of what can be grown here. We can be more than small businesses with 10 employees. We can grow national organizations. I want to see the Coachella Valley lead as entrepreneurs and continue to use our valley as a headquarters. Q: Why are you so passionate to get everyone off the grid? VB: Because, when I left Russia, and I had seen the oligarchies and how mean they are to their people and their control over power companies, I knew I had to do something about it in my country. I saw how corrupting centralized power can be. I am not selling something that will not work. I have no bag of tricks. Every day, with every contract, I use the sun for my purpose.

Renova Solar 75-181 Mediterranean Ave, Palm Desert, CA 92211 760.503.3417 | www.renovasolar.com

GETTING SYMBOLIC • Saffron orange is Renova Solar’s mascot color, as it’s the color of light and eternal life. GREAT BEGINNINGS • Renova Solar started officially in 2006, and are dedicated to being an energy company offering closed loop, holistic solutions that will help consumers avoid the electric utilities who really are the energy companies of yesteryear.

Q: What are people looking for in an interior designer? MS: Someone that will listen and communicate. Someone who will create a design that is functional and who will tailor a design to the individual. Someone who will create a unique design that they may not be able to envision on their own. Q: How did growing up in the Coachella Valley affect your feelings about interior design? MS: Growing up in the Coachella Valley, I was exposed to big beautiful homes and unique architecture. We have the best of the best here and it taught me anything is possible. Q: As a long time desert resident, how do you see your role in the community? MS: I came from very modest beginnings. Growing up in the desert, I was provided many opportunities, and I see myself as an example to the young people growing up that you can start with nothing and create success for yourself. Q: To what do you owe your success? MS: I owe my success to my supportive family, my great clients, hard work and a little luck! Raise the Woof Pijuan Design Workshop Knows That When it Comes to Spoiling Fido, Go Big or Go Home

“We are open to the individual taste of the client. The goal is always to provide for the needs of the dog and the happiness of the owner.” —Alejandro Pijuan

WRITTEN BY: ERICA JOHNSON PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY: WILLIE ROMERO PHOTOGRAPHY

As they say “It’s a Dog’s Life,” but these days, dogs have it pretty good. There are doggy spas, dog treat bakeries, daycare and dog strollers—everything to pamper and spoil your beloved companion. For those that have been there/done that and are ready for the next level, Pijuan Design Workshop offers hand-crafted, midcentury modern dog houses. Beautifully designed and perfectly functional, your puppy can now have his own dream home.

A

Alejandro and Sara Pijuan are the husband and wife team responsible for creating these wonderful abodes for the lucky pooch in your life. After receiving their degrees in architecture from USC, the pair have great careers with firms designing for humans, but find that designing for dogs is much more fun. “We work on high-rises and single family homes, but when people find out about the dog houses, they get really excited. It’s fun to see their reactions. You can see it in their eyes that it makes them happy,” said Alejandro. You can treat your pooch to “1118 Woof Ranch,” a cedar-shingled ranch home inspired by Richard Neutra, complete with a planter, deck with artificial turf and a stand for water and food bowls. Your pup will love “Dog Re-Treat,” inspired by the use of recycled materials with a live roof system planted with carex grass. For the beach-lover, there is “Dog Tower 9,” a lifeguard station dog house that doubles as a stylish end table for books, lamps or accessories. There are other styles and options available for dogs of every size and every home is designed for the dog to be able to move freely in and out and see what’s happening outside through windows or portals.

COME ONE, COME ALL

g Pijuan Design Workshop will be exhibiting at the Palm Springs Modernism Show Fall Preview Oct. 20-22.

MODEL BEHAVIOR

g The Pijuan’s originally designed for their own beloved Husky, Adilynn, who is also the model for the brand.

The thought and care that goes into the construction of each home makes these not only a great way to show your love for your pet but also a great investment. You can have the homes customized to fit any style or even to mimic the architecture and style of your actual home. “We are open to the individual taste of the client. The goal is always to provide for the needs of the dog and the happiness of the owner,” said Alejandro. PIJUAN DESIGN WORKSHOP www.pdworkshop.com @pijuandesignworkshop

No matter how many hours of “Million Dollar Listing” one watches, we will never understand what it’s like to be on the other side of the home buying court, unless, of course, you're a real estate agent. It takes a lot to find that clawfoot tub, open floor plan, large yard, close to town with a room for your art and a yoga studio. Most agents will find a house that checks off most of your list, which is great, unless it doesn’t fit your lifestyle. That’s where The Agency comes in.

The Agency is the West Coast’s premier luxury real estate brokerage and lifestyle company with an office located in Palm Springs. Founded in 2011, The Agency has redefined the real estate business by cultivating a spirit of collaboration, innovation and integrity. Clients and listings are represented in a collaborative environment amongst its agents, providing clients with a true competitive edge in the marketplace. The Agency goes beyond what a conventional real estate brokerage offers, envisioning itself as a lifestyle company that informs and connects a vast international audience, through new technological advancements, social media strategies, design, marketing and sales solutions for buyers, sellers and investors across the globe. The Agency has a widespread reach with agents and offices in some of the most desirable locations, both in the United States and abroad, including Greater Palm Springs. The Palm Springs area is unique in that it offers something for everyone, from new buyers to those looking to retire and everyone in between. When it comes to presenting properties to buyers, Rich Nolan of the GPS office stays true to the mission and focuses on the lifestyle of his buyers. “Palm Springs has something for all styles and tastes. For me, I like to find out the client’s lifestyle first, then find the home that complements their style of living,” he said. Each member of The Agency team brings something new and unique to the table, much like the properties they represent. Richard Bartholomew represented a house built around an indoor swimming pool. “The living room, dining room and kitchen were all centered around the pool, connected by bridges,” he adds. “I don’t think this style of living would be for everyone, but it was 56 LOCALE MAGAZINE

GOING GLOBAL The Agency partners with Savills, a global network of over 600 offices, helping link clients to 30,000 agents in markets such, as Asia, Europe, Australia and India.

certainly very cool to look at and different from most of the homes we see.” Dedicated to success, agents like Maria and Mike Patakas are sure to focus on quality work. They approach buyers a little differently. “We focus on the value of the lot the home sits on, the attributes and the longterm potential. Because our market is mainly second-home based, we have to make sure to present properties with strong characteristics, so when a buyer goes to sell, they will have a better chance of maximizing profit,” Maria Patakas said. As for what attributes an agent looks for to ensure the success of each listing, Maria says, “The most important thing is that the seller has maintained the property consistently and will do what it takes to have the property show at its very best. When discussing what requirements agents like to have met before taking on a property they think “the most important requirement is if the seller is maintaining the property consistently or if they will do what it takes to have the property show as best as possible. Even if it is a resale, we want to present it just like a new model home to the market. We put a lot of attention and investment into the listings we represent and aim to exceed our clients’ expectations on every transaction.” The Palm Springs team strives to ensure that their clients are happy and confident about their decisions, whether

buying or selling. They go above and beyond to build relationships and provide personalized service, such as Mike Stevins, who takes road trips to Santa Monica to represent a client's daughter in the purchase of a house. “To me, it is zero percent about markets and 100 percent about quality relationships,” Stevins said. “I am very close with my clients, and I once heard a client jokingly say ‘Michael, there isn't a barbecue, birthday, bar mitzvah or sale at Fred Segal that we haven't seen you at.’ Who doesn't love a good sale?” The team also stays on top of trends in the market, which varies depending on buyer demographics. According to The Agency’s Joe Chung, the area is a melting pot of trends, due to a rise in second-home buyers who don't always have a defined taste. According to Chung, millennial buyers tend to be drawn to midcentury homes, and while older buyers prefer other architectural styles. Keeping tabs on trends like these helps the agents stay successful and relevant in an ever-changing marketplace. The Agency corners all ends of the market, which helps keep its agents so well stocked with an inventory of gorgeous homes. When a company goes to such great lengths to guide you through the sale or purchase of a home, you know you’ve found a winner.

GIVING BACK The Agency was the first real estate brokerage to partner with Giveback Homes, where every donation directly helps build homes for families in need. HIGH-PROFILE LISTINGS GPS is home to numerous high-profile homes including the Frank Sinatra house, listed by Rich Nolan: “When I represented the former Frank Sinatra residences, there were a lot of unique features and amazing history that I couldn’t disclose, but I can talk about the helicopter pad—that was pretty cool.”

I got a job out of high school working in a local hotel, and that’s what got me the bug to continue. I enjoy the fact that there’s something new everyday that prevents the job from becoming monotonous. Q: What is the best part about working in the hotel industry? MLV: It’s a small, intimate hotel. It’s in the heart of the valley, and when you step onto the property, you feel like you are worlds away. It is a very relaxing area with relaxing scenery, like the beautiful, majestic mountains.

THAT’S AMORE • Matthew and his wife enjoy vacationing in Italy because of the scenery, food and experiences. CALIFORNIA LOVE • An LA native, Matthew loves that the hotel industry allows you to move to different cities.

Kathrin and Brian Smirke OWNERS OF WE ARE IN OUR ELEMENT Q: What is the Dome in the Desert? Katherine Smirke: The Dome is a secluded house in Joshua Tree. It is a place of solace and solitude that can be rented through Airbnb. Q: What inspires you to create these spaces? Brian Smirke: Before we had the Dome, we were in LA buying properties and fixing them up in terms of how people were going to live in them. The Dome gave us the ability to create a space totally devoid of what other people wanted. Knowing that it wasn’t a full-time residence, we didn’t have to be totally practical. We could design the spaces in a more interesting way and do it purely to our likes and dislikes. That was what inspired us to continue; it’s such a creative process.

“IT’S NOT A PLACE WHERE PEOPLE JUST COME TO SLEEP; WE TRY TO CREATE A MOOD AND ALLOW THE GUESTS TO EXPERIENCE THE DESERT IN OUR EYES.” —KATHRIN AND BRIAN SMIRKE

Q: What makes you different from other homes on Airbnb? BS: What makes us different is that we buy some of the most run-down

properties and fix them up with budget restrictions. We can reenvision and create the way we like. We like creating an experience for our guests. It’s not a place where people just come to sleep; we try to create a mood and allow the guests to experience the desert in our eyes. Anyone can book a hotel, but we don’t think they would be able to feel as connected. Q: What is your favorite part about the Airbnb business? KS: Doing this stuff is great because it gives us opportunities to be creative. Once it’s done, we have time to pursue other things we’re interested in. Of course, we have to keep in touch and see if everything is flowing smoothly. We give our guests a lot of privacy, but we enjoy hearing about their experiences. Some people even get engaged at the Dome, or have other life altering experiences. Some people have even bought their own places in the desert because they loved it so much; it makes it so special.

CH-CH-CH-CHANGES • Kathrin Smirke originally moved to Los Angeles in the hopes of becoming an actor, but now, in addition to her Airbnb projects, is a stained glass artist. JACK OF ALL TRADES • Brian Smirke wanted to pursue a career in writing music. Now, in addition to working with his wife, he is a real estate developer, designer and part time musician.

get to work with community leaders, and to be able to have the flexibility to do whatever we want to help the guests is really awesome. Q: What has been the most interesting moment during your time at Avenue of the Arts? KC: Everyday is interesting. One of the things about the hospitality business is that it is always evolving and things are always different. We get rock bands to cast and crews of Broadway shows to royalty from the Middle East to giant parties to small private wine dinners. There’s always something happening. Since we’re in such a unique location in a city that’s a center for cool, it’s really good to be a go-to place for those kinds of things.

WALK THE WALK • Costa Mesa being “the center for cool” as Chouinard says, the Avenue of the Arts Hotel is only about a five-minute walk to the Segerstrom Center of the Arts. WORTHY CONTENDER • Chouinard says the biggest challenge is standing out amongst big names, and with a Marriott and a Westin only a five-minute walk away, the challenge is even more pronounced.

Amanda Szabo FOUNDER OF RESORTPASS

Q: What inspired you to create ResortPass? Amanda Szabo: There are so many resorts in San Diego and all I wanted to do is lie by the pool, have a drink and go in the hot tub at hotels near where I live. I didn’t feel comfortable sneaking in, so I’m thinking these pools are empty a lot of the time; so why can’t I pay just to be there? I hadn’t been able to do that because hotels didn’t have a system, so I connected these two sides by providing that system for hotels to benefit from hotel day-guests. Q: Which hotels have accepted and began selling ResortPass? AS: There are a few. The first one was the Estancia La Jolla Hotel &

Spa. They had a beautiful pool and a really nice spa. They benefitted from locals looking to use their pools and cabanas. Other hotels include the Hilton San Diego Resort & Spa and the Paséa Hotel & Spa, as well as hotels in Hawaii, Texas, Florida and Arizona. Q: What is the best part about creating a way for people to have a “daycation”? AS: It makes me happy that people can enjoy luxury. They don’t have to sneak around, and the pass allows them justifying going to a hotel. It opens up more opportunities to people, and I look forward to allowing them the opportunity to experience it.

Sarah Zurell: I love solving real life problems with human powered technology, and so when I met Randall Jamail, Pavemint’s CEO, I knew parking was a problem I could help solve. Thirty percent of city traffic is caused by people looking for parking, and that comes to 4.2 billion tons of CO2 every year just in LA alone. If people know where they are going to park before they leave their house, they won’t have to spend 20 minutes looking for a space, and their cars wouldn’t pollute our air. reservations vary from $5 to $100, and it all depends on demand and where the space is located. In Silver Lake, you might pay $5 for a few hours, whereas if you were going to a Ram’s game at USC, you might pay up to $100. Typically beach city spaces go for around $10 to $30 for the day. Q: What are your hopes for the future of Pavemint? Destination VACATION Hotel Paseo is About to Be Your Favorite Palm Desert Getaway

WRITTEN BY: AMEIHIA TURINGAN PHOTOGRAPHED BY: GEORGE DUCHANNES

Known as a city where “snowbirds” come to escape the cold of winter, Palm Desert is adding a new place for them to relax in. Hotel Paseo, the newest venture in Palm Desert, invites you to check in for a stay at its establishment. Nestled in the Coachella Valley, Hotel Paseo is the first luxury hotel to be built in Palm Desert in 30 years. The Autograph Collection hotel contains an array of amenities and experiences to guarantee that you’ll have an enjoyable time. “[Ten years ago], our owners saw that there was something missing in the El Paseo shopping district; they thought that a luxury hotel could anchor and complement the shopping area,” said General Manager Gil Reyes. Described as an “homage to the effortless style of the Golden Era” by Reyes, the hotel is meant to provide a warm and fun environment that “empower[s] visitors and locals to find their path.” Inside the hotel, guests can check into one of the 150 rooms or the renovated 25-foot vintage 1950s Airstream Cruiser trailer located on the backyard lawn. All rooms are decorated with local artwork and equipped with smart TVs to stream Netflix, Hulu Plus, Pandora and YouTube. “It's uniquely in a position to incorporate modern technology to the overall guest experience,” said Reyes. Along with the lodgings, the hotel boasts a spa, restaurant, fitness center and pool. At the spa, you can relax with couples massages, manicures and pedicures. To eat, guests will be served breakfast, lunch, dinner and happy hour at Chef Andrew Copley, Juliana Copley and Tony Marchese’s AC3 Restaurant + Bar, which specializes in new American cuisine with global twists and serves cocktails, California craft beers and wine. The hotel also has an expansive workout room featuring new equipment, bicycles, morning yoga and tai chi classes as well as a pool to help guests burn off a few calories. After swimming a few laps, you can treat yourself to the cabana bar or play lawn games with the bocce ball court, cornhole or shuffle board. If you decide to venture out and soak in the desert sun, the hotel is located right in the premium shopping, dining and art gallery destination of El Paseo. Hang It Up, Before You Go-Go CALIFORNIA CLOSETS CAN HELP YOU DESIGN A CLOSET THAT WOULD MAKE CARRIE BRADSHAW BLUSH

WRITTEN BY: REBECCA GRAZIER PHOTOGRAPHED BY: JOE NARDELLO

Looking to spice up your closet space? California Closets offers custom designed closets that can fit anyone’s space and style needs. California Closets uses a software called ClosetCad Pro, that allows the designer and client to create their dream closet one component at a time. The designer starts by dragging and dropping the partitions and the very top shelf, then building from there.

L

Clients have the option of choosing from the most basic type of closet with shelves and partitions or going with a completely decked out, Carrie Bradshaw type of closet. However, it’s not so much about the simplicity than it is about how the client wants the space to work for them. For the main structure of the closet, clients can choose from a variety of different finish options ranging from classic white to the upgraded Tesoro™ Collection which is exclusive to California Closets and imported directly from Italy. Now, this is where the real fun starts. After choosing the type of finish, clients are able to select upgraded drawer and door fronts with gorgeous patterns and glass inserts, clear glass or leather shelves and a range of contemporary to luxurious handle options. They’re also able to choose stunning quartz countertops, angled shoe shelves, numerous lighting options—pretty much all the accessories a closet would ever need. Pull out belt racks, tie racks, jewelry trays and hamper rods can be added in as well. If you can think of it, they probably have it.

Q&A WITH CALIFORNIA CLOSETS DESIGN CONSULTANT

Kristina Alcocer

Q: What is your inspiration when designing? Kristina Alcocer: We have this amazing showroom with our design studio. It’s beautiful. Once you open up all the different drawers and see all the different colors and materials that we have, you can start pulling it all out and putting it all together to a vignette, which is kind of your drawing board of what you can possibly play with. That’s kind of where my inspiration comes from, and I also just look at other beautiful closet ideas that I see on Pinterest. Q: What is the process for designing a closet? KA: That’s the fun part. During the initial consultation, that’s where we first start off with just talking to the client, understanding their needs and making sure that we are a proper fit for the client. Then we measure the space and we actually sit down on the first consultation with the client, open our laptops and plot it all into our ClosetCad Pro software. It’s a really collaborative process. Q: What is a typical day for you? KA: My day is always different, and that’s what always makes it really interesting and fun. Pretty much, I have one to two 74 LOCALE MAGAZINE

appointments set for the day, and I visit the client’s home and I manage my time around that. So it’s kind of always changing, but it’s what keeps it interesting. [I have] multiple projects that are always going on, so even though I work from home, it feels like I have a very social job because I have so many clients that I’m working with. Q: How would you describe your style? KA: I’d say that my style is that I like to keep the closet very balanced. I want it to look good, and I try to start off with a focal point of that closet and then I work my way out from that point to kind of build the rest of the space around it so it can all fit together. Q: What’s your favorite part of the closet? KA: That is a tough question because my favorite is probably how the closet comes together as a whole. But, if I had to choose a favorite, it would probably be a tie between floor to ceiling angled shoe shelves behind beautiful glass doors or a large island with a quartz countertop. I commonly use these as a main focal point in the closet and then everything else comes together from there.

Clients have the option of choosing from the most basic type of closet with shelves and partitions, or going with a completely decked out, Carrie Bradshaw type of closet.

Less is More THIS STYLISH MOBILE ABODE IS 600 SQUARE FEET OF POSSIBILITIES

WRITTEN BY: QUINTAN VALLES PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY: KELLY PEAK

The days of fantasizing about that big mansion you’ll buy when you hit the jackpot are beginning to fade away as environmental awareness and simple living is quickly becoming more popular. We are realizing that less is way, way more! The Palm Canyon Mobile Club in Palm Springs is hopping on the eco-friendly tiny-house bandwagon to show us that chic stylish living can come in very small packages (600 square feet to be exact). So wipe those shoes off and let us give you the grand tour in one of these little nooks—because no one wants to clean a mansion anyway.

The days of fantasizing about that big mansion you’ll buy when you hit the jackpot are beginning to fade away as environmental awareness and simple living is quickly becoming more popular.

A MOBILE DEVICE These chic little mobiles are in fact mobile, if you so desired you would be able to relocate your home. But why would you want to leave beautiful South Palm Springs? That’s just silly.

GO GREEN To make the footprint of these homes even smaller most of the roofs are built to support solar panels.

As real estate agent Paul Kaplan states, “This home is perfect for someone downsizing and looking for indoor/outdoor living.” It has the vintage mood that Palm Springs is known for with all the modern edges and amenities. The first thing you’ll notice is a classy deck with plenty of room for a table and chairs for a nice early morning breakfast or a relaxing afternoon with a good book and a sunset. The unique and vibrant color scheme on the outside of the house creates fantastic curb appeal as the bright yellow door frame accents the cool gray exterior. Inside, the living room showcases sleek wooden floors and retro furniture. You’ll suddenly feel like you’re taking a little timetravel vacation to a groovier time. Aside from the ones overhead, there are plenty of other windows to create an open feel so you can let out that claustrophobic sigh of relief. Some other features that Kaplan mentions are “insulated ceilings and walls, dual pane windows, high ceilings, a spacious bathroom and modern appliances.” This next room is for all the foodies out there. Let's take a peek inside the kitchen, the tastiest and, dare we say, most important room of the house. This completely modern kitchen flashes some elegant quartz countertops and designer hardware like a stainless steel sink and contemporary stove, dishwasher and microwave. The cupboards are a simple, clean white with stainless steel handles for you to keep all your goodies inside. Just because this house is small doesn’t mean your plates have to be.

So where are you going to catch your z’s after enjoying the nearby Palm Springs nightlife? In this perfectly portioned bedroom, complete with mirrored wardrobe doors to conceal all your swag. They are also useful by providing you with a luxurious place to make sure your outfit is on point, and of course, your hair and eyebrows are most definitely on fleek. Even with a full-size bed, you will have room for a nightstand and that built in dresser where you can keep all your lucky socks and undies. Now, it's time to see the place that most of us start our day and get prepped for the hustle and bustle ahead—the bathroom. Ah yes, we all appreciate a lovely bathroom, it's our place to relax and practice our singing in the shower or give ourselves that 10-second pep talk in the mirror before we face the day. The simple and sleek design of this bathroom creates a serene atmosphere from the granite sink to the stainless steel lighting fixtures above. With ample space for your toiletries below the sink, you’ll be able to fit all of your beauty essentials in one place. Now, if you thought 600 square feet is not enough space to entertain guests, then guess again! Your place will be the place to hangout for your friends and fam for summer night barbecues. The meticulously maintained grounds of the Club and the resort-style pool, clubhouse, barbecue and lounge areas are perfect for summer fun. And if you want to get out of this beautiful little house for a bit, Kaplan says that residents can enjoy nearby attractions such

as “downtown Palm Springs entertainment venues, restaurants, bars and hiking.” So whether you’re in the house or out exploring the city, there will never be a dull moment. Okay, we know what you’re thinking, ‘this place seems great, but there is no way I'll be able to accommodate my beloved dog who is also my best friend/cuddle buddy.’ Well, the animal lovers at the Palm Canyon Mobile Club were thinking of your furry little friend when they created a community dog park. Now you and Lassie can take a stroll or play some fetch and maybe sniff a new friend or two (that last one is just for your dog). If you’re getting jealous of all the nice exercise your pooch is getting, then go have yourself some “me time” at the community gym. Build lean muscle with the free weights or get that heart rate up with some miles on the treadmill. Now you no longer have to waste valuable time driving yourself to the gym or hand over your hard earned money for a membership. One of the wonderful aspects about this house and the Palm Canyon Mobile Club is the perfect balance between community and privacy. The serene sense of privacy is best felt through that fenced backyard with a stunning view of the mountains. It’s perfect for watching the sunset and having a moment of meditation in your own personal succulent garden and neat desert landscape. This hip and modern tiny house packs a huge punch in delivering style and comfort. You may just find yourself having more “staycations” in this little spot.

[His daughter] was now his sous chef, and she was prepared to taste and give the thumbs up when necessary.

from chef Michael Beckman’s demeanor, it is obvious when you walk into his kitchen that he loves cooking at home; to him, it is relaxing, therapeutic and it centers him. He likes how meditative cooking at home makes him feel. He mentioned that cooking usually involves his two-year-old sitting on the counter with his wife by his side, paired with a glass of wine. They also enjoy being outside, sitting in the backyard and getting the grill going. The conversation started with a red tool box; it was interesting to see such an industrial, unique object in his kitchen. As he continued to chop vegetables, I gazed outside, and spotted a small red top grill. Nothing extravagant, just simple. The pieces of the masterpiece that he was creating began to come together. Similar to a painter preparing for a major opening with a blank canvas, this non-assuming grill appeared as a lonely object, sitting in the middle of a well-manicured backyard with a picturesque lake as its backdrop. In no way did I imagine that this simple object would be the foundation of the dishes that he was creating.

My curiosity began to grow. I had to ask, “Are you more of a griller, or pots and pans type of guy?” Beckman replied, “This time of year, we try to stay inside. If I have the time, I like to fire up the charcoal grill because I like the smoky flavor you get from it. Usually a combination, a good healthy salad, legumes, whole grains and something smoky and grilled. A lot of the food at my restaurant comes from that flavor profile.” Beckman uses the same tools to cook at home as he uses in his restaurants, Truss and Twine and Workshop Kitchen + Bar, and he keeps them all in that red toolbox. As the comfort level heightened, the

to simmer gently. “At Workshop I use San Marzano tomatoes canned in Napoli,” Chef Beckman adds. 5. Braise with a couple cloves of crushed garlic and sprigs of thyme. Keep adding water as the lentils absorb the liquid until they are tender. Season with salt and finish with butter or olive oil. 6. For our gorgeous fish from Veta La Palma, Spain, simply rub inside and out with salt and chermoula, a Moroccan spice blend. Drizzle a little olive oil over the skin, and grill gently over medium heat on a charcoal grill until you feel the meat is easily separated from the spine.

conversation took a comedic turn. “Say for instance you were on ‘Naked and Afraid,’ cooking style. What is that one tool you can not do without?” Beckman replied, “My knife. It is my carbon steel 11-inch chef’s knife and it is versatile for everything.” He keeps his tools basic at home, something that most master chefs would appreciate. As the fragrant aromas began to fill up the room, his wife and daughter woke up from a nap. At this point, we are all immersed in culinary bliss. He sat his daughter on the counter, and she observed him cooking as if this was a part of her everyday routine. She patiently watched her dad as he diligently prepared some of her favorite dishes. She was now his sous chef, and she was prepared to taste and give the thumbs up when necessary. When it comes to sourcing ingredients for his home, his strategy is all about freshness. “We use farmto-table, farmers market and Whole Foods. We are shopping for organic produce at home,” he explained. He grabs a few things from work as well to include into his home dishes. “A lot of the spices and oils and specialty fish that is hard to get anywhere retail, we take advantage of the supply chain at work.” One of his favorite places is the Santa Monica Farmers Market, due to the fact that he went there religiously every Wednesday for three years. “I feel like I know it well,” he mentioned, and “the produce is always beautiful.” After all of the conversation amongst family and friends, it was time to eat. The table was set outside in a beautiful manner, paying attention to every

detail. Today, he was a master host, chef, fishmonger and waiter—he was everything, all while keeping a calm demeanor. He created a warm environment that I am sure spills over into his restaurants. Dinner was served. Our meal included grilled fish that was flown in from Veta la Palma, French lentils, onion confit and roasted baby fennel. He created a true work of art with just two tools; his grill and his beloved knife, and lest we forget, the love and helping hands of his family. He proved that cooking from your heart starts in the home. The delicious spread was complete; we all enjoyed the rest of the evening and continued the chatting until the sun set in the heat of the desert.

7. Drizzle with more olive oil coming off the grill and dust with the chopped fennel fronds.

3. When the shallot confit and the fennel are done, combine the two, and finish with the chopped fennel fronds and a touch of extra virgin olive oil. 4. For the French lentils, give them a quick rinse then sieve. Dice up some carrot, celery and shallot, sauté that in ghee then add the lentils and peeled, chopped tomatoes, and enough water LOCALE MAGAZINE 97

HONORABLE MENTIONS

SHARING IS CARING Chef Granados recommends splitting your meal with a friend so you can try more items without getting too stuffed. After trying to eat this burger solo, we think this is sound advice.

We know Coachella for its rockin’ music festivals and vast desert landscape, but this town also has some great places to chow down. We had a hankering for some tasty burgers and heard that Chef Carlos Granados and his crew were serving up a Black and Blue Burger that was like a music festival for your taste buds. So we stopped in Cafe 54 at the Augustine Casino, the place that Chef Carlos proudly calls his home, to see what this talented man is capable of burger-wise. Let’s just say, after tasting this burger you’ll leave the casino feeling like a winner.

W

Chef Granados is careful to ensure that his guests can order classic comfort foods while at the same time using ingredients and preparation methods that elevate the dishes to a gourmet status. This heavyweight burger is the perfect combination of comfort and elegance. Nestled between two soft, grilled brioche buns is an eight-ounce juicy burger patty stacked will all kinds of tastiness. The house-made bleu cheese dressing is drizzled on top of the patty and topped with sautéed mushrooms, onion, tomato, lettuce and bacon. When the order for a Black and Blue Burger comes through, Granados’ skilled and careful hands charbroil the patty to your liking (well-done or still mooing), then carefully sautés the onions and mushrooms and places two locally baked

brioche buns on the grill to develop a nice lightly toasted outer layer. Once the crispy yet soft buns are on the plate, Chef Granados places that thick patty on the bottom bun and tops it with fresh bleu cheese and drizzles that housemade bleu cheese dressing over it. He then places two thick-cut savory strips of bacon on top and lays the sautéed mushrooms and caramelized onions over the bacon and, of course, the fresh tomato and leafy lettuce next. Then the burger is topped with the brioche bun and a steak knife is inserted in the middle of the burger to hold everything together (it’s also useful for fending off your jealous friends from stealing off your plate!). Now that first bite is an eventful flavor experience. You have the warm, soft brioche buns to slowly sink your teeth into before you hit the fresh crunch of the lettuce and tomato. Next you notice the thick-cut salty bacon that compliments the sweet grilled onions to make that ohso-satisfying sweet and salty combination to guide you into the sharp spark of the bleu cheese. The flavor of the bleu cheese pleasantly lingers throughout the bite, and blends with the charbroiled taste of the burger patty. Go ahead and savor that second bite as you did the first, there’s plenty more of that burger to enjoy, and we are very, very happy about that.

Q&A With Executive Chef Carlos Granados Q: What sets the Black and Blue Burger apart from the other burgers on your menu? Carlos Granados: This burger brings you a sweet tanginess and saltiness that people crave in a burger. The flavors blend really well, and it's one of our more popular burgers. With this burger you don’t have to say, ‘Give me a burger and add bleu cheese’ or this or that, it’s already there for you. Q: What ingredient would you say makes this burger pop? CG: The bleu cheese. It’s the creaminess, the saltiness and the tang of the bleu cheese that makes the flavor pop, it really stands out. If you just had a bacon burger, it would be good but it wouldn’t pop. The cheese blends well with the bacon and if you took it out, it would still be a good burger, but it wouldn’t stand out. Q: What would be your idea of the perfect meal for a first time visitor of Cafe 54 with the Black and Blue Burger as the main course? CG: It would depend on where you come from and where you grew up. I have a Mexican heritage and I am used to those flavors, but I also lived in Santa Barbara where there was a lot of Asian culture and flavors. So it also depends on how adventurous you’re going to be. One of my favorites would be our Asian Chicken Salad. Q: In your opinion, what makes a burger truly “gourmet”? CG: It happens when you start thinking about what each item brings to the burger. If I were to make a bleu cheese burger and use just any bleu cheese or using other ingredients just because they are cheap, then you won't have a quality product. I look for the right flavors to blend together; you have to pay attention to each ingredient in the burger. So you need time, thought and skill. You can’t just throw it in the microwave and be done, you have to put care and love into it; pay attention to the details. Q: Would you pair this burger with beer or wine, and why? CG: I would probably pair it with a red wine or a bolder beer to compliment the bleu cheese. But it really depends on the flavors you’re used to. If you’re not a red wine drinker then you might not want something strong, but you still want something to compliment how strong the bleu cheese is. LOCALE MAGAZINE 101

Inside the ever so lovely Villa Golighty in Palm Springs, a sweet and sassy sartorialist is lighting up the room with free spirited charm in a finely fitted, blush pink suit serving piñata smooches and shaking his “Judy” (his personal word for booty) to ‘90s Jennifer Lopez jams. The vibe is contagious. And that’s before witnessing him jump into the backyard pool with his stylish threads on. Salvador “Sal” Camarena, born and raised in Indio is a self proclaimed “Modern Mexican.” He’s the celebrity wardrobe stylist you can’t help but wish could be your personal stylist. “I really just want to make people happy—give them that JLo glow and make them smile," said Camarena.

Camarena puts love and light into everything he styles from flower arrangements, interior design and piecing together outfits for celebrities. During this year’s Modernism Week, within the walls of the gorgeous and mod home of his friend Kelly Golightly, he slayed in the creation of the Beyoncé bathroom paying tribute to Bey’s Lemonade album. The lavish lavatory is complete with a retro phone above the TP with signage reading “Dial 9 To Call Becky With The Good Hair” and brightly colored, lemon wallpaper certainly making the Beyhive proud. Speaking of the powers that bey, one of Camarena’s style manifestos includes channeling your inner Beyoncé. “It’s about being confident and just owning who you are even if you’re wearing sweatpants,” said Camarena.

C

Golightly describes her pal’s personality as “someone you just naturally gravitate to, the life of the party and hysterical without trying to be.” Golightly and Camarena know one another from mutual design circles where they attended Fashion Week together. “We realized we were two, design-nerd peas in a pod who are just geeked about pretty visuals,” said Golightly. Camarena’s upbeat and colorful persona of “Hollywood Glam With Palm Springs Swag” matches his personal wardrobe style of grown-and-sexy mixed with whimsical, playful pieces. The man has not one, but two closets! “In closet number one I have my suits, bow ties, dress shoes, pocket squares, my grown man attire; you know, the stuff you want to steal,” said Camarena, “In closet number two, I have my jogger situations, elastic waist bottoms ‘cause I like to eat 114 LOCALE MAGAZINE

my tacos, the kicks (sandals and Vans), oh and I love a slide shoe, my Selena tees, tons of swimsuits, short sleeve button downs; there is a lot of playful color prints and party stuff. It’s basically a piñata explosion,” said Camarena. When speaking of his resumé, Camarena is modest, and not to name drop for him, but he’s outfitted the likes of Jeff Lewis, Heather McDonald, Ali Landry, partner Ross Mathews and then some. You may have also seen Camarena doing his thing on “Revenge Body with Khloe Kardashian,” E! Live from the Red Carpet, “Chelsea Lately” and “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.” As if his resumé is not already poppin’ you probably turned the pages of In Touch Weekly and saw his skills. When the dapper designer isn’t styling and profiling, he’s a doggy daddy to two chihuahuas, Audrey (named after Audrey Hepburn, of course) and Selena, named after the “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom” singer. You’ll also most likely find him working his “Judy” training for the Glitter Run, which benefits LGBTQ. The 5K funds go directly to the Latino Initiative. “I’m all about pushing the culture and promoting communities working together.” For the next month or so, Camarena is committed to working on the future project of building his brand to continue doing what he loves. “I legit love styling and it goes back to making people smile.” He hopes to host his own makeover show for the everyday man and woman. So, let’s aim to live like Camarena: embrace your talents, tailor your suits and eat tacos.

#Inspo Camarena draws his inspiration from his mother, Frida Kahlo and Selena Quintanilla. Style Goals Camarena would love to style Kendall Jenner, Issa Rae and Jackie Cruz.

“I REALLY JUST WANT TO MAKE PEOPLE HAPPY— GIVE THEM THAT JLO GLOW AND MAKE THEM SMILE.” —SALVADOR CAMARENA

The Motto Camarena’s fashion motto is: “Be yourself, because at the end of the day there is no one else like you and I’ve also gone by Marc Jacobs’ ‘Make it pretty and f— it up.’”

“I’M ALL ABOUT PUSHING THE CULTURE AND PROMOTING COMMUNITIES WORKING TOGETHER.” —SALVADOR CAMARENA

One side is for coffee and a place where kids can hang out, but the other side has a wine-tasting bar for the adults.

I’M FROM LA QUINTA; It’s a quaint little city near Palm Springs, but no one really knows where it is. It’s pretty hard explaining to people

so I tell them that Coachella Fest takes place in the city

right next to mine. People understand then! Old Town La Quinta is right in my backyard. It’s a cute little area with

restaurants, stores and salons. Pretty much everything you could ever need is in Old Town La Quinta (including ice

cream!). Recently, I visited a couple of my favorite shops there and thought I would show you. Obviously I had to change my outfits to match each location because I’m

‘extra.’ I definitely plan on going there more often; it’s so beautiful and I had an awesome time!

Old Town Coffee Company I like coming to this coffee shop; it’s very quiet and the hot chocolate is really good. Anyone who has a page theme on Instagram would be obsessed with this place. It’s a cool place to go to when you want to relax and unwind. I come here on my days off. 760.564.5233 136 LOCALE MAGAZINE

Q&A With Jenna Ortega by Makena Hale

The ice cream looks amazing and tastes amazing—I love this place!

Makena Hale, daughter of LOCALE’s publisher Erik Hale, had the chance of a lifetime—to spend the day with one of her favorite Disney Channel stars, Jenna Ortega. She even was able to interview her and ask the questions she’s been wanting to know!

Makena Hale: What are some of your favorite things to do in Palm Springs? Jenna Ortega: I like to go to the movie theater. We have a Wet ’n’ Wild here so we like going to the waterpark a lot and [going to] pool parties with my friends.

Certified Farmers Market Certified Farmers' Market is adorable. I like going there to pick up fresh fruit and to smell the flowers. La Quinta’s a small town, so you almost always run into someone you know. They play good music and everyone is really nice. If you’re in La Quinta on a Sunday you should check it out! MH: Is there a certain person who inspired you to become an actress? JO: The person who inspired me to become an actress was Dakota Fanning and I remember I saw her in Man on Fire and I thought she was the coolest thing ever, especially since she was [the same] age in that movie as I was at the time. MH: What’s your goal for the next 10 years? JO: I want to be a leading lady in feature films and I want to win an Oscar. As I get older, I want to get into directing and writing and producing and stuff like that, so I can work behind the camera.

Eevaan Tré Eevaan Tré is Bringing a Different Kind of Heat to SoCal With His Smooth R&B Tracks WRITTEN BY: QUINTAN VALLES PHOTOGRAPHED BY: GEORGE DUCHANNES

2015 was a big year for R&B singer/songwriter Eevaan Tré. That was the year he made it to the musical mecca known as the Coachella Music Festival. For many musicians, making it to Coachella is a pretty big deal; it’s the moment in a music career that signifies, “you’ve made it.” For Tré, the big shows are great, but it’s the small venues that are intimate and personal, just like his music, that are the most memorable. Writing music since he was 16 years old, Tré received encouragement from teachers who saw his musical potential, which led him to make a career out of his talent (thanks Teach!). Coachella was Tré’s big musical moment, “I’ve always entered competitions, and spent one year out in LA spending money on making songs,” said Tré, “but it never really happened for me until I played at Coachella Fest. It wasn’t until then that I was like ‘Damn, this is cool.’” We agree, Coachella is pretty cool, but what’s even better is experiencing it with your bandmates who are also your best friends, as Tré explained, “We get to travel and do music so that’s kind of dope. You find stuff out when you go on the road with your homies,” he exclaimed, “We had a bass player one time who was the guy that would bring his sleeping bag and would sleep in the nude! So that was interesting,” he laughed.

Tré also looks to his iPod for inspiration and listens to artists such as Michael Jackson and James Brown because, “he really controlled his band,” stated Tré, “I also like Prince because he was so out there. I grew up listening to Justin Timberlake, so a lot of boyband stuff.” Tré has opened for some wellknown favorites like the B-Side Players and Ozomatli, and he also dreams of working with some of his other favorites. “It would be cool to work with someone like Anderson Paak,” said Tré. “He’s one of my favorite artists right now and Justin Timberlake, of course, would be dope.” Eevaan Tré and J.T. on the same stage? We’re not sure if the world is ready for all that fire.

Be on the lookout for his upcoming album and make sure to catch Tré at one of the local venues like Moxie, where he performs every Friday. These small shows are dear to Tré’s heart. “I like small shows because I get to be more intimate with people,” said Tré, “To be honest, when I played at Coachella, I don’t even remember that show, it just went by so fast. I like the smaller sets.” So if you get a chance to see one of those intimate shows, don’t miss it! We have a feeling Eevaan Tré won’t be playing these small venues for very long.

BACK TO SCHOOL Ò If Tré was not making music he would love to teach, he explained, “I like teaching because I feel like there were not a lot of opportunities for me as a kid growing up in Coachella and kids need someone to point them in the right direction. I would like to be a mentor for kids and keep them motivated.”

ON REPEAT Ò Tré says that if you looked at his iPod right now you would find a lot of Kehlani: “I love Kehlani, Kehlani is my girl. She’s like the new Aaliyah, she’s definitely my favorite artist right now.”

Expert: Greg Rubino Credentials: General Manager and COO, Classic Club Early Birdie: Rubino thinks golfing in the morning is the best time to tee off.

Classic Club is more than just an award-winning golf course; it’s more than one of Arnold Palmer’s creations; it is an organization that gives to those in need and keeps its doors open for any who wish to golf. Greg Rubino is the man that runs it all, making sure the staff of Classic Club keeps the course and club in top shape and that all elements of the machine are running smoothly.

Q: WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY AT WORK LOOK LIKE FOR YOU? Greg Rubino: What I think is great about my job is that there really isn’t a typical day. Being part of running a golf course means that every day is somewhat different. My main responsibility is being the person that overlooks the entire operation. Q: What makes Classic Club special? GR: Our ownership group, H.N. & Frances C. Berger Foundation, a large nonprofit, allowed us to hold the facility for charitable purposes. We hold hundreds of charitable events a year here, and we give those charities amazing deals so they can make money on what a normal course wouldn’t charge them; we charge them a lot less than they charge their participants and it allows them to raise money for their charity. Q: How were the charities and nonprofits introduced to the club? GR: So, when the Berger Foundation set out to build the facility they always build with [charities] in mind. When they originally built 146 LOCALE MAGAZINE

it for the Bob Hope Classic, it changed names several times; we hosted it for three years. Once the tournament left and the foundation took it back over in 2009, we officially designated the facilities to be held for charitable purposes. But it’s always been about charity since day one. Q: What do you like most about Classic Club? GR: It’s an unbelievable opportunity to be able to work with a facility that is able to help so many people. Classic Club is great for the golf course, the facility, food and beverage and all that but what makes it really special is our owners and the ability to help people. Q: How did you start golfing? GR: I grew up in Erie, PA and I

had a nine-hole golf course within biking distance, so when I was 12 or 13 years old, I started golfing and I just got hooked on it. Now I’m a PGA professional. There are over 19,000 PGA professionals around the world and we’re the people that actually run the golf courses, versus someone that is a PGA Tour Professional that plays golf for a living. So we’re good golfers but were not on tour, we’re operators. Q: If you could play a round of golf with anyone dead or alive who would it be? GR: Considering the area we live in and my Italian heritage I would like to play with the Rat Pack; Frank Sinatra and that whole group. They grew up in a very different time of celebrity and were true icons in that era. Q: How did Arnold Palmer help in designing the golf course? GR: Arnold Palmer was the designer of the golf course. We gave him sort of an open invitation to design the best golf course he possibly could. I actually got to ride around with him and play some holes with him. He told me that this is one of his favorite golf courses that he ever designed because he really had the ability to take his vision and implement it. LOCALE MAGAZINE 147

Growing up in the Coachella Valley, I spent many nights lying down in the backyard with my sisters while our father pointed out the constellations and told us myths about each one. Some of the myths were Greek, some Native American, some African American. I still look up at the night sky for the belt of the giant Orion, the seven daughters of Atlas known as the Pleiades and, of course, the Big Dipper. As the valley has grown, it is more and more difficult to see the beautiful, desert night sky.

G

During Veteran’s Day weekend, we have the opportunity to view the desert night sky without all the Coachella Valley lights. Joshua Tree National Park is hosting the annual Night Sky Festival Nov. 10-12. The festival begins Friday at 5 p.m. and runs until Sunday at 2 p.m. The primary location for the event will be the Oasis Visitor Center located near the north entrance of the park in Twentynine Palms. The event is free, and in honor of Veteran’s Day, park fees are waived on Saturday and Sunday. Experience telescope and naked eye viewing of our vast universe by night. In addition to the night sky viewing, there will also be astronomy programs as well as an astronomy fair during the day and solar viewing. This incredible and unique event is sure to be one you won’t want to miss! Star gazers and space lovers alike will be able to take part in this event, celebrate the night sky and discover the wisdom of the stars.

This Palm Desert Organization is Helping Women Succeed Against All Odds

WRITTEN BY: NANDA DYSSOU PHOTOGRAPHED BY: BIANCA SIMONIAN

By profession, Joan Busick is a Certified Public Accountant with her own firm in the Palm Desert area, but in her free time, she manages the nonprofit, Girlfriend Factor. To date, Girlfriend Factor has given over $420,000 in grants to over 130 local women to help them pursue college degrees and occupational certificates.

In the ‘80s, Busick was a mother of two and married to the wrong man with very little money to her name. She knew she had to go back to school to take control of her destiny and to regain her independence. With the help of a Soroptimist scholarship, she was able to start over and earn her CPA credentials. Her firm now specializes in helping women become more confident in managing their lives.

In 1999, she published a book, “Surviving Beyond Happily Ever After,” and became an outspoken proponent of both traditional and financial education for women. Still, Busick didn’t feel that her advocacy work was complete until 2005, when she and a small group of dedicated women, including Donna Dunn, Diana Herrington, Jan Harnik, Katie Sween and the “Blind Faith Gang,” brought to life Girlfriend Factor, or GFF.

“Everything we do in Girlfriend Factor is meant to be fun. If I’m going to commit to working on something, I want to enjoy doing it. Quite honestly, before I started GFF, there was nothing in our community that had a fun element to it. Everything was too serious and red-tape,” Busick said of her style of philanthropy. The organization’s primary aim is to provide financial and emotional support to women through its GoGirl! Grants. “The women we select are determined to be successful. They have a specific educational path that they are passionate about that leads to a career. And they are convinced that they will achieve their goal with or without our help.” GFF boasts numerous success stories. “One of our first recipients, Donna, was a truck driver with small kids who had always wanted to be a nurse. She has gone on to earn a master’s in nursing, working as an emergency pediatric nurse in Loma Linda, and eventually teaching other nurses,” Busick said with a smile. “Then there’s Jennifer, who was in the middle of a divorce, struggling and she wasn’t even sure that she should apply. She is now a special education teacher at one of our local elementary schools. And we had Vanessa, from the Hispanic community, who had a small child when her husband was diagnosed with MS,

“It is a celebration of our recipients, and the impact, inspiration and influence women have on each other’s lives.”—Joan Busick and she became the sole supporter of the family. Determined to get an education, to make something of herself, she succeeded against the cultural push back from her family. She earned a degree in psychology and went into counseling.” GFF goes further than simply writing a check. Their Recipient Relations Committee, a group of liaisons, keep in touch with award recipients. They take them to coffee, find out how they are doing and help them as needed. GFF also hosts a High Tea, where recipients can bond with each other. The fund for the grants comes from a combination of sources: general donations, Personalized Giving Grants and fundraising events. Their signature event is the Annual GoGirl Luncheon. “It is a celebration of our recipients and the impact, inspiration and influence women have on each other’s lives,” said Busick. “We always make sure that donors can see the faces of the women they support.” In the first year, they had seven awardees stand up and talk about their stories and plans for the future. This year, they

will have 30 new awardees and several hundred past recipients and donors at this impactful event, held at Miramonte Indian Wells Resort & Spa in November. Looking at the future of GFF, Busick said, “We want to make sure that we are multi-generational in terms of women who lead the organization, so we have our Girlfriend 2 Girlfriend (“G2G”) Circle, consisting of young professionals, ages 25 to 40s, who may be new to philanthropy. It allows them to get to know and encourage each other in their professional growth while learning what it means to be supporting a philanthropic organization.” As a nonprofit, GFF is always looking for donors and volunteers. “We encourage people to get their feet wet, and see if they are passionate about our work. We are more of a lifestyle than a formal organization. We want people involved that love what we do,” said Busick. So dive in, the water is warm and you’ll be having fun while helping women change their lives!
