editor's note We all know—and can admit—2020 hasn’t gone to plan. These past several months have left me with the continuous thought that we are living through history. We learned about historical moments and memorable dates back in school, and it’s apparent we are living through a time that will be remembered and written about for years to come. Most of us have adjusted to this whirlwind of a year by working from home, FaceTiming with friends and family and finding our voices in issues that matter.

opportunity to talk with Jasmine Marie, founder of black girls breathing (pg. 50), which is a safe space for Black women to meditate and take time for self-care. And if you missed our A-Z Shoppe Guide back in May, it’s printed within these pages for you to browse and explore (pg. 69).

Businesses have had to pivot, speak up and rethink strategies to stay afloat. While we are a lifestyle magazine— writing and featuring restaurants, bars, hotels and shops in the Southern California community—every industry has been affected and learned lessons along the way. It hasn’t been the smoothest of times, but our community has shown an outpouring of inspirational support for one another. I’m excited to see this issue of LOCALE printed, sharing brands and small businesses in the Southern California community with you.

And I certainly can’t leave this note without acknowledging and thanking the essential workers who’ve risked their lives to help strangers this year. Always remember to be kind and respectful to one another. Instead of going back to “normal” after all of this is said and done, let’s strive to be better.

Yucca Valley

The day of Clive Standen’s photoshoot began with blue skies, brisk, 45-degree weather and a dirt road off the beaten path. Music filled the Airstream at The Desert Yacht Club, as hair and makeup stylist Aiprll Patino and stylist Neil Cohen got Standen photo-ready for the day. The group, accompanied by Pippo the resident cat, walked out to the Stargazing Boat, parked on the peak of a hill, where Standen was ready to soak up the sun—and the spotlight. Leading Man “I am in the middle of Joshua Tree, shooting in the beautiful surroundings, and I’ve got Mumford & Sons playing in the background with some lovely people and great clothes,” said Standen. “This is pretty much the perfect day!” An Idyllic Setting The Desert Yacht Club was an incredible location for the photoshoot, not only for its plethora of backdrops and helpful staff, but for its natural surroundings as well. “I love how surreal this location is,” Patino said. “It’s gorgeous— the clouds, the sky, the landscape—it’s beautiful, it’s bizarre, it’s amazing.” Nothing But Blue Skies “Clive was so kind to everyone and eager to try different looks, locations and poses,” LOCALE’s production coordinator, Lauren Lewellen, said. “When the production team arrived the night before, it was pretty windy, but we woke up to blue skies. It’s been a perfect day with the perfect team and the perfect subject.” Desert Daydream “Anytime you’re shooting out near Joshua Tree or Yucca Valley, I’ve always felt that it was a dreamland,” photographer Tae Kwon said as he was setting up between shoot locations. “You can just do whatever.” And with a subject like Standen, who was eager to climb around and experiment, the results were nothing short of incredible.

WHISKY FOR THE WIN

We were the first to export Single Malt Scotch Whisky as Single Malt in the United States—that is Scotch whisky that comes from one distillery (the “single”) and is all from malted barley (the “malt”)—back in 1963. If you were drinking scotch before then, you were most likely drinking a blend.

HOLLYWOOD STAPLE

Ò Musso and Frank’s is a must for any out-of-towners. It oozes old-school LA, and the servers and bartenders really know how to lay it on. For me, my go-to there is Glenfiddich 12 on the rocks. Most Angelenos know it’s the oldest restaurant in LA, but everyone else may recognize it from the opening scene of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Ò Republique is one of the best meals and experiences I’ve ever had. I like to go before it’s too busy and order a few different courses at the bar with pairings. I trust everyone there to pick what’s best for what I’m eating. The last thing for me is always a neat dram of Glenfiddich 21 Year Gran Reserva, which is finished in rum casks. republiquela.com

NEIGHBORHOOD GEM

Ò I live in Silver Lake, and I really enjoy having Glenfiddich cocktails at Thunderbolt. The vibe of the place is relaxed, but you won’t find a better set of bartenders anywhere. Shoot for the Stars This Local Angeleno Spills Her Love for LA and Her Favorite Summer Sips

Diamond Bar NAME: Lillian Salazar JOB TITLE: Director of Chains, West Business Unit

75 YEARS IN THE MAKING

I’m not sure everyone is aware that Constellation Brands is a family-founded business celebrating its 75th anniversary this year. Our portfolio of beer, wine and spirits includes some of the most celebrated brands in the world, such as Corona Extra, Modelo Especial, Pacifico, Victoria, Robert Mondavi, Meiomi, The Prisoner, Ruffino, High West, SVEDKA Vodka and many more.

RESIDENT OF: Diamond Bar, CA LOCAL LIVING: 36 years

LOVE FOR LA

I’m a native Angeleno whose parents emigrated from Mexico in pursuit of the American dream. My parents taught me that every obstacle can be overcome with hard work, education, determination and compassion. These values and characteristics are not unique to me, as these are shared by many Angelenos; for that, I love LA.

SIPPIN’ AT HOME

Ò Lately, I’ve been on a seltzer/rosé kick, so I combined them to create the perfect drink I call roseltzer! It’s 1/3 Meiomi Rose, 1/3 Corona Hard Seltzer Cherry, 1/3 Canada Dry Ginger Ale and a wedge of lemon (squeeze and drop in glass). Stir and garnish with a rosemary twig—enjoy!

Ò SoCal is made up mostly of wonderful, passionate people who come together through the good and bad. What I love most is the lifestyle, the diversity of cultures, values, taste and sound. In SoCal, you can find the best food from around the world and (did I mention?) the best weather; it’s like an endless summer vacation!

PERFECT PAIR

Ò My go-to meal is green chili chicken enchiladas with Spanish rice and corn salad. This pairs perfectly with Pacifico beer, which is a lightly bitter pilsner that’s not too heavy yet crisp and refreshing. Plus, it enhances the taste of the green chilis.

TAKE A HIKE

Ò My favorite local nature spot is the Schabarum-Skyline trails in Walnut. It’s a hidden gem that few know about. There are nine different trails you can take, and I prefer segment H. It’s 3.43 miles, I love the scenery and it’s not too difficult to hike!

“On a hot summer day, Corona Premier is the perfect beer; it’s very light yet rich in flavor. It pairs well with lemon shrimp skewers.”

MARGARITA TIME

Ò A Casa Noble spicy pineapple margarita is one of my favorites. In a shaker, add and muddle pineapple and jalapeño. You’ll need two chunks of fresh pineapple, two slices of jalapeño, 1 ounce of fresh lime juice, 1/2 ounce agave syrup, ice, 2 ounces of Casa Noble tequila and 2 ounces of pineapple juice. Shake and pour into a Tajin-rimmed glass.

LOCAL LIVING: 2 Years

There are different languages spoken in California. This variety creates a beautiful sound we get to hear when walking down a street or sitting in a restaurant.

LIKE THE FRENCH

Ò When hosting at home, I love surprising guests with a French margarita. Adding this elegant twist to a familiar classic is always a crowd pleaser. You’ll need 2 ounces of Lillet Blanc, 1 ounce of Olmeca Altos blanco tequila, .75 ounces of fresh lime juice and half an ounce of agave or honey syrup. Shake and strain it over ice and garnish with an orange wheel.

HAPPY HOUR AT HOME

Ò After bartending for 12 years, making complicated cocktails at home is something I only do on special occasions. My go-to is usually a Lillet and soda water with a slice of orange and fresh mint from the garden. It’s a simple cocktail that is light and refreshing, which is perfect for winding down after the 405 commute, and before you start the battle of “What’s for dinner?”

LILLET www.lillet.com

ORANGE YA GLAD

Ò One of the main components of Lillet is the housemade orange liqueur that helps comprise its unique signature flavor. When they first began making this, they would use the peels from thousands of Hattian and Spanish oranges in the liqueur and donate the fruit of the oranges to local schools and hospitals.

ANY WAY YOU WANT IT

Ò Lillet is one of the most versatile spirits I have ever come across—it will really surprise you how many ways it can be used. You can drink it on the rocks or make it into a French mojito; it’s fantastic when using it in the traditional Thanksgiving cranberry sauce or freeze it with lemonade for a summer treat. If you want more beverage inspo, follow @ lillet.usa on Facebook and Instagram!

SEAFOOD SENSATION

Ò Lillet is incredible with seafood. The region of Bordeaux, where Lillet comes from, is known for its vast marine cuisine, so it makes sense that the two would be suited for each other. I love to make a simple panseared halibut with summer veggies and fresh tomatoes. After searing the fish, I use butter and Lillet Blanc to deglaze the pan and sautée the veggies.

On the surface, Clive Standen is what you’d picture as the definition of manliness. He’s played warriors, is an athletic champion and does his own stunts. Get to know him a little better and you’ll find that beyond the biceps and the beard is a caring father of three, an ambassador for marine life and someone who loves singing along to Mumford & Sons. In other words, Standen represents less of what it means to be a “man’s man” and more of what it means to be a man of the modern age.

Already very active with Muay Thai boxing and professional stunt training, Standen’s acting career began in his teens, which was around the time his mother had decided to go back to school so she could teach drama therapy to children with Down Syndrome. “I was 16 and very impressionable...and I really looked up to my mum and all the [21-year-old drama students] she was working with,” he says before cracking a smile. “At the same time, there was also a girl I really liked...and that’s where it started.”

A

With the support of a mother and teachers who believed in him, Standen decided to take the idea of acting professionally more seriously. “I’ve always been that person where you give me an incentive and I suddenly get tunnel vision, and I ride toward that goal,” he explains. From there, he decided to take classes to further his education on the subject but was disappointed by the amount of armchair knowledge the courses required. “I couldn’t just do theater, which was frustrating to me at the age of 16. I was like, ‘Why isn’t there a course that is practical to being an actor?’” Standen recalls. “A lot of the courses were all theory...and I had already read all the books that were on the syllabus. So I did a year of theater studies and [then] dropped out—I didn’t want to be a historian, I wanted to be an actor.” Standen found his place in performing arts courses, which not only allowed him to practice his craft, but it also let him explore the more physical side to performing, and this is where he was able to tie in his knack for athletic training. “It all came in handy for the stunts I do now!” he says. “I’m a little insane and crazy and a bit of a lunatic when it comes to stunts.” Needless to say, the combination of his acting and physical training fared well for him in his career. Best known for his role as Rollo in “Vikings” and Bryan Mills in the “Taken” TV series, Standen’s acting career has taken him around the world, through ancient and modern times alike. When he wasn’t sword fighting in Camelot or throwing axes in Kattegat, he was pulling off a heist in Rhode Island or getting hit by a car (then stealing said car). “It’s simply not true that you just walk into jobs,” Standen explains. “Usually you get cast for what your strength is. I’m a very physical actor; I have a very physical presence, and I got into acting to play numerous different characters—and characters that were far removed from myself.” “I don’t actually like playing onto type,” he continues. “But usually, that one audition you get right at the beginning of your career is the one where people go, ‘I can just see him playing that role!’ I think I was thrown into the historical epics, the dramas that are more physical, and now I can branch out.” His roles have all been very different characters to play, but there is something Standen loves about each of them: they are flawed. “I don’t think anyone’s perfect,” he says. “There’s something I hold on to and think about quite a lot: in Chuck Palahniuk’s ‘Fight Club’ (the book), the first time the main character sees Tyler Durden is on the beach, and he’s getting driftwood and shoving it in the sand…” The passage Standen’s referring to continues: “What Tyler had created was the shadow of a giant hand. Only now the fingers were Nosferatu-long and the thumb was too short, but he said how at exactly four-thirty the hand was perfect. The giant shadow hand was perfect for one minute, and for one perfect minute Tyler had sat in the palm of a perfection he’d created himself.” (Chuck Palahniuk, Fight Club). “The point of that scene in the book is all you can expect from perfection is a moment, and if you look for anything more, you’re going to be disappointed,” Standen explains, “and I think human beings are the same. You can have many moments of perfection in any one day, but you have to look for them and appreciate them.”

Extracurricular Activities When he’s not working, Standen is an acting ambassador for Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.

He’s Got the Beat “I did a lot of contemporary dance training,” Standen shares, “and I think it actually helps with the choreography of fighting and the sword play—you pick up the moves and your movement ability is so much better.”

40 LOCALE MAGAZINE

Parental Guidance “We have this little game around the dinner table now where I go, ‘Say one good thing about your day and one bad thing about your day,’” says Standen, “and none of the other kids or anyone around are allowed to question that bad thing… It’s about being readily available to communicate your feelings with the people you love.”

Location, Location, Location Some of Standen’s favorite filming locations have been in the Wicklow Mountains of Ireland and Tybee Island in Georgia.

Nice Handiwork Standen is a former international Muay Thai boxer, a fencing gold medalist and is ambidextrous with a sword.

Standen never shies away from his characters’ flaws. Instead, he embraces them, letting those imperfections add texture and humanity to the roles. Aside from being flawed, the roles throughout his career have all tended to be rough around the edges. Whether he’s played the honorable knight, the battlehungry viking or the vengeful ex-CIA operative, they can categorically be called men of violence. However, Standen’s most recent role of Anthony Lavelle in “Council of Dads” is a change of pace.

S

“There seems to be a big thing about toxic masculinity,” Standen says. “There’s nothing wrong with a man who cries and expresses emotion. And I wanted Anthony to be a hugger, a kisser. He’d hold his heart on his sleeve: when he’s angry, he’s angry; when he’s emotional, he’s emotional, you know?” Over the past few years, the term “toxic masculinity” has become an undeniable buzzword. The term not only challenges how our society sees men, but how our society shapes these men as well. It’s an idea that’s been around since the ‘80s, and it’s just now catching on in the mainstream. While the current rhetoric may seem like it’s mostly focused on calling out men for being

predatory or too aggressive, the term was originally created to question why our society raises our boys to feel shame for emotional expression, to utilize violence as an indicator of power and to be overtly self-reliant, among other points. While his warrior-type roles haven’t necessarily been poster boys for today’s idea of healthy masculinity (presumably due to the time periods the stories are based in), Standen has attempted to bring a more relevant portrayal of modern masculinity to his present-day characters. But not everyone has been on board with it. “I did have some time on ‘Taken’ [during] a very emotional scene...the scene felt very much like the scene in Se7en with Brad Pitt yelling, ‘What’s in the box? What’s in the box?’” Standen shares. “And I played the scene really emotionally—I had tears in my eyes— and the director came up to me and went, ‘Can we do another take? But can you stop the tears, because tough guys don’t cry.’” Despite this note, Standen felt strongly about this scene and continued to deliver an emotional performance, but by the time production was finished, each one of Standen’s tears had been edited out.

In a stark contrast, Joan Rater and Tony Phelan, the producers of “Council of Dads,” were seeking the opposite from their actors. “One of the reasons I signed on [to ‘Council of Dads’] was Tony Phelan saying, ‘Let’s just stamp out this toxic masculinity,’” Standen says. “And I told him that story, and he said, ‘Well, you’re not going to get that from me.’”

I

The NBC show, which aired this past March, follows the Perrys, a family that has just lost father and husband Scott Perry to cancer. In his remaining months, Scott had created a Council of Dads to help take care of his five children after he’s gone— from driving lessons to words of wisdom. “It’s been really great to play a character that’s emotionally ready,” says Standen. “There’s a lot of violence and gratuity in the world right now... and ‘Council of Dads’ has a really positive message, and it’s full of joy...and optimism about moving on, and finding humor through grief, and it’s about who shows up. It really mirrors the modern family today, I think.” Aside from its relevance, one reason Standen believes the show will resonate well with its audience is because he has seen the parallels between the story and his own reallife experiences firsthand. “‘Council of Dads’ works on so many levels, but what’s interesting to me, especially with my character, is the role of a father in our society,” Standen explains. “My dad left when I was eight years old, and I haven’t seen him since. I had an amazing man who stepped in and took over that role, and I don’t like calling my stepdad my stepfather—he’s my dad. Anyone can be a father, but it takes a strong man to be a dad.” “‘Council of Dads’ is about a man who dies of cancer...but it doesn’t have to be about death; there are lots of families out there where dads just walk out, they leave or they’re away on business for very long periods of time,” Standen continues. “So on one hand, it’s about the role of single moms and how hard they work, but it’s also about how important the role of a father figure is.” On-screen, Anthony Lavelle is a man without a family, whose superpower would be “the ability to talk to children on their level.” Standen describes his character as the “cool uncle” that kids can trust and talk to, but he’s still able to fill in as the strong male role model. “But what’s interesting is that he’s never had anyone love him,” Standen shares, “and he needs this family as much as they need him.” Another way that Anthony paralleled reality is that Standen plays the best friend of a man battling cancer, a role he has played in real life. “My best friend—best man at my wedding, best friend I have in my whole life—was diagnosed with cancer, and he was very, very ill,” Standen says. When he originally met with Rater and Phelan, who wanted him for the part of Anthony, Standen pitched himself to play the role of Scott Perry, who dies in the first episode. “I start crying in my interview with them, going ‘I’m not sure I can play this role because my best friend is dying of cancer, and I don’t want to be the guy on TV playing the best friend.’ And they said, ‘Well, maybe this is why you need to play this character.’” This is a man who has fallen backwards off a three-story-high wall (on purpose), but the role of Anthony daunted him on a much deeper level. “Most of the roles I’ve played in my career have been far removed from me,” he explains. “It’s very hard for me to go, ‘This is me. I’m playing myself.’” But Standen remembered advice he had received in drama class: if you’re scared of a role, you should play it. Fortunately, Standen’s friend is now in remission. “He’s a lot better now,” he says, “but it was terrifying at the time.” Standen’s hope for ‘Council of Dads’ is that it sparks real-time conversations within families and creates a platform where difficult, but important subjects can be broached. He believes that an open line of communication is key—not only to strong, inclusive families, but to raising the next generation as well. “It’s about communicating. There’s a lot of anxiety and depression and things that people are ashamed to talk about, and I think it’s important to vent by talking,” Standen notes. “And again [it comes back] to who shows up...about loving yourself and living in the moment,” he says with a grin. “All you can expect from perfection is a moment—so live that moment!” LOCALE MAGAZINE 43

Breathe In, Breathe Out black girls breathing Is a Meditation Safe Space Created for the Well-Being of Black Women WRITTEN BY: TAYLOR GORSKI • PHOTOGRAPHY BY: GERALD CARTER, TANISHA THOMAS & NEOSHA GARDNER STYLED BY: MICHELLE CARLTON • MAKEUP BY: KALENA MURPHY

Passion x Purpose • “I feel very aligned and purposeful in my work and feel like people can see why this work is so necessary and beneficial,” Marie states. She’s just getting started. Make It a Priority • Marie describes how it’s about unlearning the “go, go, go” mentality and learning self-care. Believe in Your Dreams • black girls breathing was granted $10,000 from Dream Warriors Foundation in Atlanta to kick-start the company— building the foundation to their work and their online community.

A session consists of breathwork, organic conversations and navigating feelings and emotions the Black community has been facing. Sessions have been hosted across the country in Los Angeles, New York, Atlanta, Boston and beyond. Due to COVID-19, black girls breathing has extended their virtual sessions over the past few months, hosting more online circles and will continue to do so until 2021. “COVID very specifically affected the Black community along with native and indigenous communities. I wanted to create an offering where people can have the work accessible—to access the actual breathwork for free—that hasn’t been a possibility, so I wanted to bring down that barrier and open up these spots,” she says. A crowdfunding campaign was launched after inquiries were made about donating sessions to make them free and available to Black women. After 150 slots were donated by non-Black allies for the May 31 class, Marie saw the need for this to continue throughout the year. black girls breathing is striving

to provide over 100 Black women per session access to free classes for one year. “It’s important to offer consistent classes to be able to shed the effects of trauma,” Marie says. Healing in the body is the overall mission of black girls breathing. “With anxiety, stress and depression, the data and medical research out there shows that Black women are the biggest segment that suffers from physical ailments linked to chronic stress,” Marie explains. A number of therapists who are a part of the BGB community, recommend their clients and are incorporated into the virtual sessions. From Toronto to Bangkok, the black girls breathing community has reached women across the globe. Marie’s overall goal is to make her services available for Black women all over the world. Women ranging from 18 to 70 years old are joining sessions to take a moment to care for themselves and invest in their overall well-being. Marie states, “As we seek equality and justice, we still need to take care of ourselves. That’s a revolutionary act in and of itself.”

Founded in 2018 by Jasmine Marie, black girls breathing is a safe space for Black women to actively nurture their mental, emotional and spiritual health through meditation and breathwork. Breathwork is a meditative healing technique that helps reframe the body’s response to trauma and triggers. “I recognized the lack of diversity in breathwork and the fact that it was generally not accessible in the Black community, especially knowing the specific challenges the Black community faces when it comes to mental health,” Marie explains. 50 LOCALE MAGAZINE

Chances are, you’ve spotted the LENITA flower truck, drawing attention with its bold, dark text juxtaposed against the soft, pastel pink backdrop— striking, yet modest. LENITA founder and GRITA owner Nemuel DePaula carries a deep affinity for the arts and dreamed of making beauty and joy accessible throughout Los Angeles. With this vision and his little pink truck, DePaula hit the road, determined to help LA’s vibrant community “stop and smell the flores.” What started as a creative outlet flourished into something much deeper. With this new venture came the opportunity to bring local artists together, forging a sense of community and highlighting

While patrons can expect an assortment of freshly cut floral arrangements, LENITA also offers ceramic pots, jewelry, candles, publications and more—all originated by local artists. “The fusion of the floral business and art is a natural one,” states DePaula. There’s something honest and true about supplying beauty in its most natural form— whether it’s plucked straight from the earth or drummed up into existence by the soul of an artist. When asked about his line of work, DePaula beams, “I do it for the smirks. For the passersby who see the truck for the first time and can’t help but smile.” And what a unique and fulfilling

Name: GianMarco Cosmi Job Title: Chef at The Italian Homemade Company

Transport yourself to Italy without hopping on a plane and traveling across the world. Just a drive away, The Italian Homemade Company creates fresh, homemade and authentic Italian pasta. Pick a pasta (fettuccine, tagliate, gnocchi and ravioli are just a few of the options), pick a sauce (think Bolognese, marinara and pesto) and definitely add a side of meatballs and homemade flatbread. Is your mouth watering yet?

T

Started in San Francisco in 2014, The Italian Homemade Company is now opening their newest location in Long Beach at 2nd & PCH. The Italian Homemade Company is a family affair; Chef GianMarco Cosmi is the brother of Mattia Cosmi, who founded the company with his wife, Alice Romagnoli. The family came to America from Rimini, Italy—a small beach town in the region of Emilia-Romagna known for its balsamic vinegar, Parmigiano-Reggiano, mortadella and prosciutto. Cosmi has been a chef for 14 years; he studied cooking in Italy at ALMA International School of Cuisine just outside of Parma and traveled and worked all over the country. “I’m very proud to keep the Italian tradition alive and share it here in California,” Cosmi says. While pasta is the main attraction at The Italian Homemade Company, other menu items include homemade yeast free flatbread sandwiches (aka Piadine), salads, cold plates and Italian desserts. Although every pasta at The Italian Homemade Company is delectable, the vegetarian ravioli shines. The ravioli is made with the best possible ingredients—ricotta made fresh every week at Double Eight Dairy Farm in Petaluma, Parmigiano DOP aged 24 months and an unrevealed secret that explains the freshness of all the ingredients combined. Each square noodle is individually stuffed with rich ricotta and spinach; the finest sauce pairing is the brown butter and sage sauce. “It’s a very delicate sauce that enhances the fresh pasta flavor. Sage is bitter and ricotta is sweet, so it’s a great marriage,” explains Cosmi. “Having the knowledge of the traditions is the best; learning how to make pasta directly from my grandparents was a true treasure. We get to share that with the people who come to our restaurant. The key is to keep it original. And Italian,” Cosmi says. The fast and casual environment of The Italian Homemade Company, typically packed like a true Italian trattoria, will satisfy your pasta cravings in no time. As Italian film director Federico Fellini said best, “Life is a combination of magic and pasta.” 62 LOCALE MAGAZINE

HOW TO MAKE AUTHENTIC, ITALIAN RAVIOLI Chef GianMarco Cosmi Walks Us Through How to Make This Delectable Dish

Bite into a raviolo—an authentic, Italian homemade delight—and experience a burst of flavor. The Italian Homemade Company, who brought their Italian recipes and secrets straight from Italy, shares how to make this delicious dish. And you’re going to want to make it again and again.

B

Step 1:

• Gather your ingredients: 2 cups of double 00 flour, 3 eggs, Ricotta from Double 8 Farm (Petaluma), ParmigianoReggiano aged 24 months, ½ cup fresh spinach, nutmeg, salt and pepper.

Step 2:

• Make the pasta dough by mixing the flour and eggs. “The flour we use is the best flour, and it’s expressly milled for us in Italy by Molino Pasini. I think that makes a big difference in our pasta,” states Cosmi.

Step 3:

• “Parboil the fresh spinach, drain it and then mix with the flour and three eggs,” explains Cosmi.

Step 4:

• Use your hands to knead the dough. “The pasta needs to be kneaded for about 10 minutes until the pasta at the touch is smooth and fairly even,” says Cosmi.

Step 5:

• Roll out the dough, stuff the noodles and use a manual wheel cutter to individually cut out each ravioli.

Step 6:

• Cook in salted boiling water. “Pasta will cook in just three minutes if it’s freshly made,” explains Cosmi.

Step 7:

• Once your sauce of choice is added and ready to serve (browned butter and sage is recommended, topped with a sprinkle of grated Parmigiano Reggiano), pair your ravioli with a glass of Sangiovese from Romagna. “The light tannins pair with the spice and the herbal aroma of sage, and they round up the melted butter,” explains Cosmi. Buon Appetito!

OUTDOOR DINING IN MANHATTAN BEACH GETS APPROVED WITH THE HELP OF MICHAEL ZISLIS

Michael Zislis

WRITTEN BY: TAYLOR GORSKI PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY: PATRICK RECORD

The Manhattan Beach City Council has approved outdoor dining now through the end of September. Restaurants are permitted to use public parking spaces and other public right-of-way spots for dining purposes, while following some requirements. The idea was spearheaded by Michael Zislis, owner of popular South Bay restaurants and hotels including Rock’N Fish, The Strand House, Shade Hotels, BREWCO and more. “I was thinking with COVID that restaurants were going to be at this lower capacity. I thought if people could dine outside in the parking spaces, it would be an incredible idea,” Zislis explains.

IT’S A VIBE

With gorgeous ocean views and summer California weather, this new outdoor dining addition has a total European vibe!

THE PLACE TO BE

Downtown Manhattan Beach is known as the “Pearl of the South Bay.” Founded in 1912, Downtown

“I THOUGHT IF PEOPLE COULD DINE OUTSIDE IN THE PARKING SPACES, IT WOULD BE AN INCREDIBLE IDEA.” —MICHAEL ZISLIS

Zislis formulated his idea into a plan and sent it out to council members. “My brother said, ‘They will never let you dine on the streets, and you’ll never be able to drink alcohol on the streets!’” Zislis says. Well, the city council and Manhattan Beach loved the idea and wanted to expand it citywide. They put it on the agenda, voted on it a couple of weeks later and approved it. Decks, platforms and other barriers for safety and health measures are required for businesses participating in outdoor dining. “It was a big effort from all of the local restaurants. We all worked together and pulled it off. It’s the best feeling in the world!” exclaims Zislis.

The city took a survey of the public’s view of outdoor dining, and more than 93% of residents were supportive of the idea. “Our council really understands how devastated restaurants are from COVID. It’s just so scary for everyone and the city. This government really understood how to help the community,” says Zislis. Whether you’re craving a different dining experience or want to enjoy the SoCal summer weather and an ocean view, make your way down to Manhattan Beach! As of now, these outdoor dining opportunities are approved until the end of September.

“One of my favorite moments was displaying my summer MUCHO collection as a performance piece with several models that interacted with my large-scale art installation of six paisley sculptures at Coachella 2019. It’s surreal to see my work living outside of my studio, [not to mention] outside of my head. Seeing my work outside for people to experience is incredibly motivating.”

“Seek inspiration, visualize, sketch ideas, convert sketches to designs, communicate designs to weavers, await the magic. [The best parts of designing are] experimenting with colorways and shapes, awaiting the final product and unveiling what a drawn design becomes as a woven piece of art. Creativity is the manifestation of my thoughts and vision into reality—it is my freedom.”

“I work a little backwards. I create an item first, and from that item I formulate a mood and story. Production... is almost always challenging and oftentimes painful but a necessary evil. It looks a lot like Band-Aids and broken nails—I’ve worked with my hands for years now, which basically means never having a decent manicure, but it comes with the territory.”

CO-FRIENDLY Whimsy + Row Strives for Sustainability and Style

WHIMSY + ROW 12801 Venice Blvd Los Angeles, CA 90066 424.500.2405 www.whimsyandrow.com

Founder Rachel Temko studied sustainable fashion while in school, and after seeing the limited options available, she decided to create her own brand. “Our story began with vintage and supporting other brands,” Temko explains. “When we transitioned into creating our own ecoconscious collections, we took a pledge that every decision we made would be the most sustainable option.” Being that the fashion industry is the thirdlargest polluter in the world, all items at Whimsy + Row undergo a strict regimen for sustainability.

WRITTEN BY: ALLIE LEBOS PHOTOGRAPHED BY: CHARLIE CHIPMAN

“Made in limited-run batches in Los Angeles, our clothing is handmade

under ethical conditions, using the most sustainable materials,” states Temko. “We produce everything locally, use low-impact dyes, zero water printing, recycled water, upcycled fabrics and fabrics made with natural fibers like linen, Tencel, certified organic cotton and cupro.” Through the efforts made at Whimsy + Row, nearly two million hours of light bulb energy have been saved, along with almost 500 pounds of waste. “Without sacrificing style, fit and quality, we are an attainable and approachable eco-conscious brand. We’ve got the best of both worlds,” says Temko. While Whimsy + Row has plenty of options when it comes to giving your wardrobe a stylish yet conscious upgrade, Temko’s favorites are their Flora Pants, Jordan Jacket, Maya Top, Linen Valentina Sets and Lola Dress.

1. “During spring and summer, we offer Boy Smells, which are amazing candles that have been flying off the shelves.” 2. “Saint Luis is a brand we carry in Recess. These are the premium vintage T-shirts that you can’t find in any other store (besides Jeffrey’s). 3. “TS(S) is a new brand we are carrying in our men’s store. The brand is a highend, contemporary line with a variety of unique silhouettes.” 4. “We have an amazing sunglass and optical provider called Framed Ewe. They have a multitude of high-end sunglasses. The one that stands out the most to me is Jacques Marie Mage. JMM has a cult following with specific frames selling out before they even hit the floor.” 5. “Assouline has done a great job bringing an assortment of coffee table books that range from a watch collector’s dream to the history of the cigar.” 6. “Proenza Schouler, a staple for most women, released the new collection of their White Label with us. It has done extremely well with an amazing selection of outerwear!”

[Lost & Found] is a Bohemian-inspired time machine that transports you back to an era when quality eclipsed quantity.

Jamie Rosenthal Founder, Lost & Found

When Jamie Rosenthal opened her first Lost & Found location 20 years ago, she wanted to give Los Angeles a taste of what the world has to offer. “My father was a shoe designer and manufactured in Italy and around the world in the ‘60s and ‘70s,” says Rosenthal. “My aesthetic is influenced by this period in design and fashion, and where it

intersects with the intellectual and social ideals of this time.” Rosenthal prioritizes craftsmanship and offers a rotating inventory of European fabrics, art and furniture. She is thoughtful in her shop selections and hopes that her pieces “invoke a sense of curiosity and a human connection that does not exist with many mass-produced products and chain stores.” Lost & Found has now expanded to three locations. Like the treasures that take sanctuary inside their walls, these concept stores continue to stand the test of time and gently remind us that beauty doesn’t always fade. Rosenthal continues to remain curious and in motion, always on the hunt for hidden gems across the globe. WRITTEN BY: NICOLE JEFFRIES PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY: LOST & FOUND

Rooted in care and attentiveness, the Sea Wellness Spa promises to cultivate an individualized experience for each client that passes through its doors. “Our intimate, boutique spa allows us to focus on only a handful of clients at one time,” says Spa Director Rachel Stacy. > For a true yogi, your practice is more than a workout—it’s a holistic experience. “From wherever you’re coming from (work, school, traffic, life), feel like you’re walking down a runway in France or through the bowels of a stadium to enter the field,” says Founder Cidney Corpuz. And just like any other journey, you’re going to need the right gear, whether you’re practicing in the studio or at home. Here are Corpuz’s top picks for his practice. Namaste! 1. “An affordable yoga mat is an accessible pick under $25. Indecision on what yoga mat to get can be an obstacle when it comes to practice. You can always stack mats for extra cushion!” www.gaiam.com 2. “Yogitoes is super durable and lasts forever. This pick is pricier but definitely worth it. A mat towel can soak up sweat, add grip and is washable (great for hygiene).” www.manduka.com 3. “A massage on demand—where you want it and compact! Rogue Lacrosse Balls are known for ‘myofascial release.’ That’s fancy talk for selfmassage. Get two!” www.roguefitness.com 4. “Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. It can take 15-20 minutes to process hydration. Once you are thirsty, it’s too late! This bottle from Kuarto is cool, and your purchase helps support a small business.” www.kuarto.co 5. “What to wear, what to wear. Fellas— get the tights. You don’t have to wear anything underneath. Breathable, durable and you can always layer shorts on top. Move with confidence.” www.virusintl.com

Disconnect & Reconnect CAMP UNDER THE STARS AT THIS RETRO TRAILER POND SET ON 130 ACRES IN PASO ROBLES

WRITTEN BY: TAYLOR GORSKI

Call up your girlfriends, your SO or a group of your wine-loving friends and road trip up to The Trailer Pond located on the California Central Coast. Situated in Paso Robles (about 200 miles north of Los Angeles), The Trailer Pond is where camping meets wine tasting. Not just sleepin-a-tent kind of camping, but one-of-a-kind camping in vintage trailers (that are oh, so Insta-worthy).

Paso Robles

The Trailer Pond is tucked away on 130 acres of the organically farmed, boutique Alta Colina winery.

Upgraded Camping

Do Not Disturb

• Five bright, retro trailers surround the property’s pond, each with their own little front porch. Each trailer sleeps one to three adults. While you sleep in comfort— and style—it’s still a camping experience. “There is a communal outdoor camp kitchen that includes all pots and pans, communal bathrooms, hot outdoor showers and an amazing dock for lounging under the night sky with perfect visibility of the stars!” explains Holm.

• Spend a weekend unplugged, outside in the sunshine and with a glass of vino in hand. Private wine tastings are available on the Sundowner Deck, and catered farm-to-table dinners are available for groups. Hike through the bright green vineyards, take a relaxing private yoga class and relax with sunset movie nights in the magical vineyard. Don’t forget your film or disposable camera!

Travel With Friends • Individual trailers are available for booking, as well as group offerings and packages. Whether it’s a bachelorette party, a work retreat or a romantic weekend away, The Trailer Pond awaits your next weekend adventure.

and the rest is history!” Holm beams. Exclusive access to Alta Colina wine is offered to guests staying at The Trailer Pond. “When you’re drinking Alta Colina wine at The Trailer Pond, you’re drinking wine made from grapes grown in the vineyard you’re camping in.”

Book in Advance • Launched by the company Tinker Tin in 2016, founder and owner Jaime Holm explains that they always dreamt of expanding and adding a permanent camp to their business. Four years later, the company is a huge success—you typically have to book your stay at The Trailer Pond months in advance.
