GOING GREEN

HIGHER EXPECTATIONS

• Palm Springs has changed—we don’t just mean the rainbow flags or the Instagram-worthy pink door, we’re talking about the blossom of a new industry: marijuana. And no, it’s not the kind you find in your brother’s sock drawer.

• The cannabis industry raked in $3.1 billion in 2019, and it’s forecast to rise to $7.2 billion by 2024. With such financial growth, it’s no wonder many entrepreneurs set their eyes on a budding opportunity and are dipping their hand into a newer, greener frontier.

In a new market scene that is literally ablaze with a constant influx of new products, San Diego-based NANOCRAFT CBD has set themselves apart from others trying to make a name for themselves in the cannabidiol arena. Not only do they use top-quality, hemp-derived CBD products scientifically engineered for “the athlete in all of us,” but NanoCraft also sets itself apart with their dedication to philanthropy through their charitable organization, NanoCraft Kids.

“We really want to change the CBD market and our community with our products. And we have a number of ways we’re doing that with our innovation, our unique products and the charities we work with.” —Todd Erwin, Co-Founder of NanoCraft CBD

Going With the Flow • The idea for NanoCraft CBD was actually born out of Erwin and McKellar’s original idea for a business venture—they wanted to create and market CBD-infused coconut water. As they worked to develop and scale their business idea, they branched out beyond just creating a line of waters into a full range of CBD products.

“We really want to change the CBD market and our community with our products,” says NanoCraft CBD Co-Founder Todd Erwin. “And we have a number of ways we’re doing that with our innovation, our unique products and the charities we work with.” Erwin and his business partner, Stefan McKellar, founded NanoCraft CBD three years ago with an ambitious mission. They wanted to change the perception of CBD products and help people see the benefits they provide. They wanted to disassociate from the negative stigma that has attached itself to marijuana and identify as an industry leader in the health and fitness market. Simple education was one of their greatest obstacles—consumers needed to know that CBD products aren’t synonymous with weed. “We really want to stop people in their tracks. We need to be able to address the misconceptions and be able to tell people, ‘No, this isn’t the same thing as weed. CBD is different, and here’s why in order to get them to recognize the benefits of our products,” Erwin explains. 16 LOCALE MAGAZINE

H2-Oh! • NanoCraft waters will soon be available in three varieties: CBD water, CBD Energy water and CBD Recovery water. These waters are gluten-free, vegetarian, organic and non-GMO. They contain only CBD derived from hemp. What’s Next? • As the market changes to adapt to the widespread use of CBD products, Erwin and McKellar are hoping to get their products on the shelves of big box stores like CVS, Wal-Mart and GNC, as well as popular gyms and fitness centers.

THC vs. CBD • Tetrahydrocannabinol and cannabidiol are the two primary cannabinoids that occur naturally in marijuana plants. THC is the agent responsible for the “high” that recreational marijuana users experience. CBD, on the other hand, is nonpsychoactive and does not have these effects.

“We work hard to make sure that every part of our user experience is excellent, from our packaging to our website, and of course the taste.” —Stefan McKellar, Co-Founder of NanoCraft CBD

By harnessing the health benefits that CBD offers, without the “high” that THC provides, the pair believes they can blend science and nature to benefit everyone’s wellbeing. Their line is unique and varied, including soft gels, enhanced water, supplements, pain sticks and drops. This variation promises a safe introduction to CBD products that new users can be comfortable with as well as a range that those who are more familiar can explore. “What we want people to see is that they’ve got options. The hope is that people can use CBD to reduce their dependence on the drugs that do harm. You hear of people getting hooked on Xanax and opioids—these people are just looking for relief. And while everybody is different and nothing is guaranteed, some people are seeing great results using CBD without the unwanted side effects,” McKellar says. While promoting health benefits and fostering education and understanding around CBD is very important for Erwin and McKellar, they also aim to be a leading brand in the CBD market that consumers could trust. “We like to think of ourselves as the Nike of the CBD market,” notes McKellar. “We are a top-tier brand that provides a top-quality product. We work hard to make sure that every part of our user experience is excellent, from our packaging to our website, and of course the taste.” In order to build trust in their brand, NanoCraft CBD makes science-based information readily available to consumers via data-based blogs and research on their website. NanoCraft CBD also

heads the second-largest CBD education group on Facebook. Additionally, the company has dedicated itself to philanthropy, contributing $1 from each product sold to charitable organizations, such as the Mauli Ola Foundation and Child Hunger Sucks, through NanoCraft Kids. “We wanted to make sure that we could put something back into the community with what we were doing. The two organizations that we work with are really focused on helping out kids and that’s really important,” McKellar explains. “We’ve already been able to give about $10,000 [through our charitable organization] so far this year. We’re hoping to reach our big goal of being able to donate $100,000 by the end of the year. We’re on track to reach that and I really think we can.” While the popularity of CBD continued to grow rapidly over the last several years, the use of CBD health products by athletes and other individuals is still under question. NanoCraft CBD is doing their part to bring awareness and promote the benefits that CBD promises. Fortunately, the athletics industry is making strides by connecting NanoCraft CBD sponsorship agreements with athletes in a variety of sports including surfing, tennis and golf. “There were times when we were literally bootstrapped, trying to make this happen. We had to keep pushing through all of that. And we couldn’t do it without the team we have here,” says McKellar. “We’ve been able to surround ourselves with people who have our same vision. And we’re so lucky for that—none of this would be possible without them.” LOCALE MAGAZINE 17

5 THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT ONE OF SAN DIEGO’S COOLEST DISPENSARIES WRITTEN BY: KANDACE CORNELL Since the official legalization of marijuana for adult recreational use in the state of California back in 2016—an announcement which elicited a cloudy puff of relief among Mary Jane enthusiasts statewide—the cannabis industry has been growing across Southern California like, well, a weed. Full-service neighborhood dispensaries offering a wide range of products (from traditional flower to edibles and CBD vape pens) have cropped up seemingly everywhere, and Urbn Leaf, one of San Diego’s top cannabis destinations, is leading the pack. For those less familiar with the whole experience (myself included!) we chatted with Director of Marketing, Savanna Rakofsky, about this booming business and why it’s so dope.

#1 | LOCATION, LOCATION

San Diego

• Since the brand’s inception

in 2017, the brainchild of entrepreneur Will Senn, Urbn Leaf has opened two San Diego locations (one in Bay Park and another by the San Ysidro border) and employs more than 250 knowledgable staff members and budtenders to walk you through the shopping process. Like selecting a vintage of wine, the types of products and flavors are all geared towards personal preference. “Urbn Leaf is working to change the perceptions of modern cannabis culture,” says Rakofsky. “Our staff attends multiple training sessions with our vendors, so they know how each product is formulated, the processes used, and the effects they provide. From the thoughtfully curated collection of products to the modern, strategic layouts of each location, every detail is designed with the customer experience in mind.”

#2 | GETTING BUZZED • With the arrival of

sophisticated products like sleek CBD vape pens, candyflavored edibles and liquids, soothing topical creams and even pet products, the industry has made major strides in educating consumers to the benefits of cannabis. For first timers (or those who haven’t indulged since their college dorm 20 LOCALE MAGAZINE

days), Rakofsky and her team recommend products that are slightly lower in THC [Tetrahydrocannabinol] for a lighter buzz. Other popular products on the menu include Raw Garden extracts for their quality concentrates and affordable price tag, Kushy Punch edibles for an introductory experience, Papa and Barkley which is a favorite among the senior community and Paleo Paw pet treats for our ailing furry friends.

#3 | PAIN PAIN, GO AWAY • In its original form,

cannabis was primarily used to alleviate pain. In addition to meeting state compliance requirements, Rakofsky tells us to rest assured that all of today’s incarnations are

safely regulated and designed to potentially relieve ailments ranging from minor inflammation to insomnia and seizures, among others. “Certain products contain specific terpene profiles or isolated cannabinoids,” says Rakofsky. “If a guest comes in looking for a product to help them sleep, we might recommend a strain containing myrcene, like Granddaddy Purple, an indicadominant edible, or a CBN tincture.” Continue Reading on www.localemagazine.com

EDUCATION STATION • The budristas’ expertise and dosing knowledge allow them to recommend the best products for the customers’ needs. “We pride ourselves with how we educate before we medicate,” says Fierro.

By looking extensively into their vendors’ growing processes and providing their budristas with valuable product knowledge and training, Libra has created a place where both the recreational beginner and the seasoned patient can find and learn about new, high-quality cannabis products. And according to Co-Founder Rob Fierro, many of the crowd favorites come in the form of an edible. From mints and candies to pastries and drinks, Libra’s 100 percent state-law compliant edible selection has a little something for everyone. According to the budristas, edibles offer great micro-dosing options, which new consumers are interested in. “We have micro-dose options like mints so you’re able to dabble, or a sparkling water that’s hop-infused with cannabis for those who want to try a different way to wind down after a long week,” notes Fierro. Among the mints and the Lagunitas Hi-Fi Hops drink are an assortment of pastries, which are freshly made from Kaneh Co, and an array of gummies that are perfect for beginners and those who are looking to micro-dose—as well as satisfy a sweet tooth! “You don’t have to be a smoker to enjoy cannabis,” Fierro says. All you need is to be open to learning about and trying something new.

LIGHTEN UP REAP THE HOLISTIC HEALTH BENEFITS OF CBD AT THE LIGHTHOUSE DISPENSARY IN COACHELLA WRITTEN BY: LAUREN MCCLARREN

PHOTOGRAPHED BY: ELLA MERRILL

The Lighthouse Cannabis Boutique is a unique and modern dispensary located in Coachella, CA. Cultivating a new standard in the ever-growing legalized marijuana scene, the state-of-the-art location is set up like an upscale coffee shop, a bright and airy space equipped with a welcoming staff bursting with knowledge. Their eagerness to help those looking for alternative medicine comes from their passion for marijuana to be used for more than just getting stoned. “We’re not just another pot shop,” Jennifer Montgomery, the General Manager of the dispensary states. “We’re different and pulling folks away from the misperceptions and stereotypes about cannabis and those that use it.”

much someone should be consuming or using. Proper application and quantity are highly significant for maximum efficacy. “The dosage is very important to ensure people have the best experience possible. Taking the wrong dosage is usually what leads people to have negative experiences,” says Montgomery. Although California State Law mandates correct dosages are to be on packaging, The Lighthouse staff will still make suggestions based on the client and their ailment. The consultants create a tailored and personal experience by helping clients determine the root cause of their issue and then finding the best products to fit their needs.

One way The Lighthouse is separating themselves from the rest of the pack is by focusing on educating the public about the holistic benefits of CBD. Their cannabis consultants are trained to know what strains of marijuana will provide which specific reliefs. “We take the scientific knowledge we have about cannabis, which is constantly evolving, along with consumer feedback on what helps them the most to enable us to make the best recommendations to our customers regarding the right products and dosing,” Montgomery says. Cannabidiol (CBD) oil has been hailed as an all healing antidote ready to remedy an array of health ailments. Advocates of CBD boast of its miraculous ability to help a variety of medical issues, from diabetes to epileptic seizures to mood disorders to insomnia. CBD comes from the Cannabis sativa plant, the same species that produces hemp and marijuana. The oil is extracted from the resin of its buds and flowers and most often diluted with another oil such as MCT, which is usually pulled from coconut oil. Unlike marijuana, CBD does not contain the psychoactive compound that gets you high, but the calming and relaxed feelings are still present. The health hype of CBD comes from its ability to interact with almost every system in our bodies such as digestive, reproductive and immune systems. For those who prefer an alternative to medications, such as narcotics, CBD is viewed as a better option to help improve specific conditions. At The Lighthouse, they believe education is key to helping those in need—by clearing the smoke, they are able to enlighten the community of the potential benefits. Montgomery arranges “field trips” for seniors to the dispensary where they learn about the products and their possible healing effects, thus dispelling any negative assumptions or preconceived notions they may have had. Libra Club’s goal is to set the standard for providing the highest quality product and trained “budtenders,” as their green connoisseurs are aptly called. Since obtaining their recreational license, they knew customers would be seeking advice and education on safe consumption and treatments. As a result, they realized that having highly-trained budtenders were going to set them apart; each budtender is CPST trained to educate their customers before medicating. As one of six dispensaries awarded in Cathedral City, they plan to open this year in September. Currently, they are in consideration to be awarded in the Coachella Valley location very soon.

• From as early as 2900 B.C., medical marijuana has speckled its presence throughout various cultures. Early China, India and Egypt—amongst many more—all found the soothing qualities of cannabis to be beneficial. Whether it was religious, medical or recreational reasoning that drove early civilizations to light up, cannabis has always found its way into people’s hearts. In the United States, cannabis has continuously been on a legal rollercoaster of ups and downs; it’s been one rough ride for reefer. It was first legally recognized by the United States Pharmacopeia in 1850. The extract proved to be an asset in disabling an array of ailments; from alcoholism to dysentery. However, within 47 years, marijuana found itself as an outlaw, and one using it would be federally punished. It would not be until 1996 when the masses in the proud state of California— would bring medical cannabis back into action.

fpo

CHANGING STIGMAS • The history of medical cannabis is one that delves deep into a distant and complicated past. Although prevalently recognized throughout time, the wondrous plant’s many benefits always seemed to find themselves ignored again and again. However, today, more and more people are starting to change their minds.

ALLOW US TO ELABORATE • Although science is on cannabis’ side, many still feel that sufficient research is being implemented. The National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIH) recognizes cannabis as being beneficial for chronic pain, eating and sleeping disorders, and even child epilepsy, but not enough research has been conducted to convince the FDA. Nonetheless, between personal stories from credible sources and diligent research by various experts, one cannot hide the many benefits of medical cannabis.

MARY JANE FOR CHRONIC PAIN • Mary Jane has always had a reputation for healing the pain, and recent findings have correlated this iconic relationship. In a 2014 Report of the Guideline Development Subcommittee of the American Academy of Neurology, conclusions stated that in both cases of spasticity and central pain, CBD and THC both proved to be effective in aiding the patient. Soon after, another discovery drew breath. In 2015, a collection of medical literature pertaining to medical marijuana— spanning from 1948 to 2015—was gathered and analyzed. In that analysis, Dr. Kevin P. Hill found that the “use of marijuana for chronic pain, neuropathic pain and spasticity due to multiple sclerosis is supported by high-quality evidence.” But it is not just pain that a THC toke or a CBD vapor can ease.

MAKING WAVES • Since then, it has been quite a rocky ride for marijuana advocates. The demonized image of this healing plant took decades to simmer out of the public’s memory, but lo and behold, it’s 2018 and an astounding 61% of all Americans advocate the legalization of marijuana. It is definitely a comeback for Mary Jane! Nevertheless, people are still skeptical. With so many stories and controversy, it’s hard to blame them. But today, things are different. It has science on it’s side. BUDS FOR SANITY • As proud members of the large community of medical marijuana dispensaries, Libra Cultivation Co. has heard new patients rave about their new green friend. They’re amazed how efficiently it targets their anxiety, depression, eating disorders or insomnia. Many doctors exchange stories in the field about the wonders this miracle plant is doing for soldiers recently exposed to trauma. Even politicians have “specifically cited medical marijuana’s potential to treat veterans’ PTSD.” With the large incline of anxiety and stress in our present society, sitting back and burning one might be the best idea!

Less than a year after Palm Desertbased dispensary LIBRA’s opening day, it has consistently brought comfort, quality and simplicity to the Coachella Valley cannabis market like no one previously.

With a third Coachella location under wraps and set to open its doors in 2020, a fresh marketing reboot and a selection of new rewards programs available to all customers, the present market for CBD products is soaring high, but it didn’t always use to be this way. Although privacy restrictions still apply to where an individual may use certain cannabis products in California, stigmas and laws have become far more relaxed in recent years. Under California law, residents 21 years and older are now

authorized to possess up to 28.5 grams of recreational marijuana. As a direct result, the Coachella Valley, which has become a powerhouse location industry in the cannabis industry, has seen a dramatic spike in dispensary and sales numbers, with LIBRA taking the initiative of expansion by storm. When LIBRA was first conceptualized in 2015, founders John Greenwood and Bradley Ulisky noticed an ill-fated correlation within the cannabis industry. The two wanted to see better customer service in this industry, as well as answers to their questions about cannabis. Libra translates to “pound” in Spanish. It also represents equilibrium or balance, which in company terms translates to the correspondence between substance and harmony. And in a society built on consumerism, LIBRA aims to give each customer a truly balanced experience by providing product recommendations that restore harmony into their lives.

On top of specializing in customer service and customers being greeted by CPSTcertified employees upon entering, LIBRA also strives to create an environment they hope will eliminate the stigma of what cannabis dispensaries used to be. Club LIBRA has adopted a sleek new website design, which offers product details not often disclosed by other retailers After recently unveiling a third loungeinspired LIBRA location set to open in early 2020, the cannabinoid industry may just become as commonplace in Greater Palm Springs as shopping for groceries—if it hasn’t already.

Since California legalized recreational cannabis use in 2017, West Coast cities have become home to a burgeoning experience-first cannabis scene. The ultrahip Apothecarium in San Francisco and the luxury surf-inspired Coastal Dispensary in Santa Barbara were some of the pioneers, and Klover is the latest addition to the California cannabis industry. Klover opened its San Diego doors to the public in early December 2019—here’s your first look at the highly anticipated San Diego dispensary. 34 LOCALE MAGAZINE

“We wanted to distinguish ourselves as a cannabis destination, providing a space dedicated to true cannabis education and the arts,” says Diaz. “We are planning on hosting food trucks, live music, cannabis educational courses and other special, art-centric events.” Klover’s impressive 30,000-square-foot property is conducive to such events, with generous parking space, room for food trucks and even a separate venue for events. Klover currently has collaborations

in the works with several local artists. Internationally known artist Panca will serve as Klover’s art director and craft several in-store experiences and pieces. The dispensary will also host quarterly artist contests with winners getting to display their work in the store. Klover has partnered with artists across San Diego to feature constantly rotating artwork in both their retail storefronts and event center. In addition to its emphasis on community, one thing that differentiates Klover is its large selection of high-quality CBD products, which will be catered to the sizable number of fitness enthusiasts in San Diego. “Athletes are slowly becoming more aware of the benefits of CBD,” says Diaz. If one thing rings true among the Klover team, it’s that experience and hospitality are preeminent. Klover brought in some of the top talent from around the United States to help run the operation, and with over 25 years of combined licensed cannabis knowledge, their team is impressive and highly hospitable.
