editor's note We are halfway through the year and boy, do things look different than expected. When I pictured 2020 and all it had in store, I certainly didn’t envision masked faces, empty sports arenas and hand sanitizer being my new signature scent. But as Frank Sinatra so eloquently put it, “That’s life.” While we may not be able to predict the next curveball, we can surely take a swing at it. So whether you’re in need of a little inspiration or something that’ll give your heart and mind a rest, we’ve put together an issue chock-full of compelling stories, resilient individuals and local businesses working tirelessly to give back and provide safe spaces to eat, shop and explore. Among them is Andrew Dorsey, owner of SOCIAL, whose team fed over 800 unemployed restaurant workers in just eight days (pg. 58), Long Beach’s newest retail and restaurant complex, 2nd & PCH,

which created a hands-free obstacle course for kids (pg. 60) and Frontline Donations, an organization that has provided personal protective equipment to ER physicians and nurses (pg. 58). Gracing the cover of this issue is American actor Brandon Larracuente who dives into his personal growth as an actor, learning how to be comfortable in his own skin and his hopes for the future (pg. 46). Inspiration is everywhere, my friends— especially in our local communities. I hope these pages ignite a sense of resilience and creativity during these uncertain times. Whether you rekindle a sense of positivity, discover a new restaurant to support or find yourself planning the perfect post-quarantine getaway, this issue is here to make you smile and look forward to the good days that lie ahead. It’s a Vibe Incorporating florals and pops of purple and green, stylist Melissa Souza says, “When choosing looks, I always think about the talent wearing the pieces and really try to hone in on their style. Of course, with editorial, a major factor to account for is the mood and theme of the shoot.” Hair and makeup artist Jennifer Mau says, “With this look and the vibe that they are going for, I thought it would be fun to do that kind of pompadour look. He has really great hair!” Thinking Green Larracuente poses in front of a succulent wall in a simple green sweater while looking directly into the camera. He then lays on a rug in a cream top and plaid jacket, as photographer Andrea Domjan stands above him on a ladder to get the perfect, dreamy shot. “I wanted the pieces to come alive on their own but also highlight the location and—of course—Brandon’s own vibe. I’m really torn between favorites!” says Souza. That’s a Wrap Music from Khalid blasts throughout the shoot, as the camera snaps a variety of images. In order to crack an even bigger smile, fiancée Jazmin Garcia steps into the background to be Larracuente’s main focus. As the shoot wraps and the last shot of the day is taken in the on-site greenhouse, the team applauds one another to celebrate a successful morning of creativity. There are different languages spoken in California. This variety creates a beautiful sound we get to hear when walking down a street or sitting in a restaurant.

LIKE THE FRENCH

Ò When hosting at home, I love surprising guests with a French margarita. Adding this elegant twist to a familiar classic is always a crowd pleaser. You’ll need 2 ounces of Lillet Blanc, 1 ounce of Olmeca Altos blanco tequila, .75 ounces of fresh lime juice and half an ounce of agave or honey syrup. Shake and strain it over ice and garnish with an orange wheel.

HAPPY HOUR AT HOME

Ò After bartending for 12 years, making complicated cocktails at home is something I only do on special occasions. My go-to is usually a Lillet and soda water with a slice of orange and fresh mint from the garden. It’s a simple cocktail that is light and refreshing, which is perfect for winding down after the 405 commute, and before you start the battle of “What’s for dinner?”

Ò One of the main components of Lillet is the housemade orange liqueur that helps comprise its unique signature flavor. When they first began making this, they would use the peels from thousands of Hattian and Spanish oranges in the liqueur and donate the fruit of the oranges to local schools and hospitals.

ANY WAY YOU WANT IT

Ò Lillet is one of the most versatile spirits I have ever come across—it will really surprise you how many ways it can be used. You can drink it on the rocks or make it into a French mojito; it’s fantastic when using it in the traditional Thanksgiving cranberry sauce or freeze it with lemonade for a summer treat. SEAFOOD SENSATION

Ò Lillet is incredible with seafood. The region of Bordeaux, where Lillet comes from, is known for its vast marine cuisine, so it makes sense that the two would be suited for each other. I love to make a simple panseared halibut with summer veggies and fresh tomatoes. After searing the fish, I use butter and Lillet Blanc to deglaze the pan and sautée the veggies.

Ú Nonprofit organization San Diego Craft Collective started a campaign selling handmade, reusable cloth masks. “Part of our mission as a nonprofit is to support local craftspeople, so we came up with the Mask 2Gether project where people in the community buy a mask, and we donate a second mask,” says Steffi Dotson, president and founder of San Diego Craft Collective. Dotson and her team have donated twice to Rady Children’s Hospital and to the City of San Diego’s Convention Center; they also plan on launching Craft 2Gether, a new project where they will sell craft kits, and for each kit purchased, they’ll donate a kit to a child in need.

Ú Highland Valley Vineyards donated 20% of all wine sales from early March to May 15 to the San Diego County Food Bank. Their generous donation was matched by another food bank donor, making the final contribution equivalent to over 18,000 meals. “With so many of our customers coming in to purchase wine, we felt it would be nice to extend this appreciation to those less fortunate during this particularly difficult time,” says Ray Schnorr, co-owner and co-winemaker at Highland Valley Vineyards. The winery continues to support a variety of important initiatives in San Diego, including the Rotary, Poway Arts and the YMCA. “We are proud to give back to our community,” says Schnorr.

During the height of the COVID-19 crisis, San Diego business owners took big steps to ensure the love and support of our healthcare workers, the unemployed and those most at risk. From crafting protective face masks to generously donating meals, these five companies (and the teams behind them) are nothing short of inspirational.

East Village

In It Together Ú In the month of May, East Village Association launched their EV Ambassador Program—a project designed to create a centralized communication between the business and residential communities during the COVID-19 crisis. Volunteers were assigned to 10 neighborhoods to serve as the main point of communication between business owners, residents, property managers and the East Village Association. Their duties included the circulation of important information like providing updates on current business offerings, homelessness and cleanliness, as well as performing routine checkins. Through this program, East Village Association worked to ignite a sense of togetherness, preserve the spirit of community and keep communication alive in the neighborhood. Brandon Larracuente shows up to his cover shoot right on time, wearing a salmon pink matching sweatsuit with his fiancée by his side. “I think the older I’ve gotten, the more comfortable I’ve become at just wearing what I feel like fits me in the moment,” Larracuente says with a smile. This outlook goes far beyond his personal style; it shows throughout his acting career and how he’s grown to be so comfortable in his own skin. Flashback to his freshman year of high school, where Larracuente was cast as the lead role of Danny Zuko in “Grease.” After that, he began to shy away from acting, as there was an aspect of negativity associated with it. “I was ridiculed, in a way, by my friends about being a part of the thespian side; [it was] just frowned upon for some reason,” explains Larracuente. “I would go for commercials periodically throughout high school, and I remember one time in specific, I booked a commercial. I filmed it, and one of my peers at school told me, ‘I saw you on a commercial last night,’ and I denied it. I was like, ‘No, that wasn’t me.’” It wasn’t until after high school when Larracuente realized that he wanted to devote his life to acting and go full-force into the industry. “After high school, I booked the show called ‘Bloodline,’ where I finally began to pursue my passions and my interests and my dreams without really caring about what others thought of me,” he says. After playing the character Ben Rayburn on “Bloodline” from 2015 to 2017, Larracuente was cast in the movie Bright on Netflix—one of his most interesting and challenging roles to date. “I played an Ork, which is a mythical creature. I had to learn Orkish—which is a made-up language,” says Larracuente. Playing this character involved getting into prosthetics every day for 15-hour days; it would take about an hour to get in costume and an hour to take it off. There was also a dialect coach on set to help learn and practice the language his

character spoke. According to Larracuente, “It was very fulfilling and rewarding because it was so challenging.” He also had the incredible opportunity to act alongside one of his dream co-stars, Will Smith, during this film. Larracuente was then cast in “13 Reasons Why” as Jeff Atkins. He initially auditioned for a different character, since Atkins isn’t in the original book that the series is based on. Because of this, it allowed Larracuente to really build the character as he saw fit. Atkins was a leader—a classmate who stuck up for other people. “I related to Jeff in a way because he was a friend I wish I would’ve had in high school,” Larracuente explains. At age 21, Larracuente moved across the country from Florida to Los Angeles, a challenge that allowed him to grow as a man and human being. “I had dreams and aspirations of moving out here [to California]. Not at 21, it would’ve been many years later, but due to booking ‘13 Reasons Why’ I was kind of forced to speed up the process,” he says. Although home was always a call away, he tried to minimize depending on his family. “I felt like the more I relied on Mom and Dad, the less of a man I was or the less I grew. I’m a firm believer that [people grow] through hard times,” Larracuente explains. Expressing there were times he struggled and didn’t know how he was going to pay rent, he always figured it out in the end. “I would not change anything because it’s given me the passion and the drive that I need to keep on waking up and facing every day,” says Larracuente.

“After high school, I booked the show called ‘Bloodline,’ where I finally began to pursue my passions and my interests and my dreams without really caring about what others thought of me.” —BRANDON LARRACUENTE In his latest role, Larracuente plays eldest child Emilio Acosta in the Freeform show, “Party of Five,” a reboot of the popular ‘90s drama. While there are some similarities to the original, this version shows the Acosta parents being deported to Mexico by ICE agents (in the original, the parents are killed in a car accident). This leaves 24-year-old Emilio Acosta with a heavy responsibility of having to step up and take care of his four younger siblings, rather than going off and pursuing his music career. The show exhibits an emotional, human perspective of political issues that the United States is facing today. “I’m Latin and grew up in a very Hispanic culture, so it helps to get that sense of who [the characters] are and the Hispanic community,” says Larracuente. “It helps build and add elements and layers to the character that maybe somebody who is not Latin may not have.” There’s something Larracuente can take away and learn from every role he’s portrayed. “I think every character that I’ve had thus far, I’ve been fortunate enough to relate to them in some way shape or form.” Larracuente wants to be remembered as somebody who does good and impactful work. “I’m really passionate about things that make people think and make people either leave a theater or go to bed at night thinking about things a bit differently than maybe prior to watching the show,” he says. And with that attitude and mindset, he has big dreams and hopes for the future generation of those in the film industry. “I hope for more inclusivity for all ethnicities and cultures. We’re on the right track, but there’s always room for improvement.” Larracuente expresses that the younger generation should continue to strive for big dreams no matter how big or small they may seem. “I think that we

need to continue to give confidence to the younger generation who is coming up now because they are the ones that are going to be ruling the world one day when we’re long gone,” he says. Aside from his growing fame and following of over 1 million fans on Instagram, Larracuente is just a normal 25-year-old going after his wildest dreams. When he has a break from filming, you can find him reading a book, drinking tea in the morning, hiking with his pup or laying on his couch watching “This Is Us.” He also recently proposed to his long-time girlfriend, Jazmin, in Yosemite National Park. “It was a very intimate moment; it was at the end of filming. I had been filming for about three or four months, and we took a little trip to Yosemite, and it was just us. It was us in a cabin, and it couldn’t have been more perfect,” says Larracuente. The two are a force to be reckoned with, as they support one another’s aspirations of acting, producing and writing while living together in North Hollywood. Brandon and Jazmin recently hired a writer for the original they are currently developing. They are also striving to adapt a New York Times best-seller. Solidifying the love and support for one another, she encourages Larracuente the morning of the cover shoot, bringing a light of positivity and smiles to the set (and stealing a few kisses in between looks). In five years, Larracuente hopes to have had his first directorial debut, whether that’s a short film or an episodic. And in 10 years? “I hope to be comfortable. I hope to have a family. I hope to be in a position where I can choose projects that fit what I need as a human being but also what my family needs.” With what he’s accomplished in just these past few years, there’s no doubt that these goals will be met—and exceeded. Brandon Larracuente is just getting started.

This is a time that has been really tough on everybody. I think our overarching goal was just to make sure that everyone on the frontlines felt the love and admiration the community has for them,” the girls explain.

FACE MASKS & FISH TACOS Ú Wing Lam, CEO of Wahoo’s, devoted much of his time during the crisis to make face masks and deliver lunches to local hospitals. “The face shields were even FDA-approved,” Lam states. “I needed a mask to keep myself [and others] safe for deliveries at homes, police departments, hospitals and businesses,” Lam explains. MEALS WITH A MISSION Ú During the start of the COVID pandemic, Andrew Dorsey, owner of SOCIAL, put together goodie bags packed with a burger, fries, water and toilet paper to hand out to unemployed restaurant workers. “The ‘Serving Those Who Serve’ initiative was something we wanted to do during the uncertain times—we decided to take a positive step to feed those workers,” says Dorsey. With help from the community, Dorsey said he and his team fed over 800 people in just eight days during the month of April. “People were very appreciative, and it’s people who truly needed it—those who hadn’t received unemployment or aid yet. People showed up with a very heartfelt, positive and gracious mentality,” Dorsey says. Then we thought, what else can we do?” says Wilhelm. After reading stories from the community, Tavern House reached out to Hoag Hospital to find out they were interested in the donations. “We delivered 400 lunches in the next five to seven days. Transport yourself to Italy without hopping on a plane and traveling across the world. Just a drive away, The Italian Homemade Company creates fresh, homemade and authentic Italian pasta. Pick a pasta (fettuccine, tagliate, gnocchi and ravioli are just a few of the options), pick a sauce (think Bolognese, marinara and pesto) and definitely add a side of meatballs and homemade flatbread. Is your mouth watering yet?

Started in San Francisco in 2014, The Italian Homemade Company is now opening their newest location in Long Beach at 2nd & PCH. The Italian Homemade Company is a family affair; Chef GianMarco Cosmi is the brother of Mattia Cosmi, who founded the company with his wife, Alice Romagnoli. The family came to America from Rimini, Italy—a small beach town in the region of Emilia-Romagna known for its balsamic vinegar, Parmigiano-Reggiano, mortadella and prosciutto. Cosmi has been a chef for 14 years; he studied cooking in Italy at ALMA International School of Cuisine just outside of Parma and traveled and worked all over the country. “I’m very proud to keep the Italian tradition alive and share it here in California,” Cosmi says. While pasta is the main attraction at The Italian Homemade Company, other menu items include homemade yeast free flatbread sandwiches (aka Piadine), salads, cold plates and Italian desserts. Although every pasta at The Italian Homemade Company is delectable, the vegetarian ravioli shines. The ravioli is made with the best possible ingredients—ricotta made fresh every week at Double Eight Dairy Farm in Petaluma, Parmigiano DOP aged 24 months and an unrevealed secret that explains the freshness of all the ingredients combined. Each square noodle is individually stuffed with rich ricotta and spinach; the finest sauce pairing is the brown butter and sage sauce. “It’s a very delicate sauce that enhances the fresh pasta flavor. HOW TO MAKE AUTHENTIC, ITALIAN RAVIOLI Chef GianMarco Cosmi Walks Us Through How to Make This Delectable Dish

Bite into a raviolo—an authentic, Italian homemade delight—and experience a burst of flavor. The Italian Homemade Company, who brought their Italian recipes and secrets straight from Italy, shares how to make this delicious dish. And you’re going to want to make it again and again.

Step 1:

• Gather your ingredients: 2 cups of double 00 flour, 3 eggs, Ricotta from Double 8 Farm (Petaluma), ParmigianoReggiano aged 24 months, ½ cup fresh spinach, nutmeg, salt and pepper.

Step 2:

• Make the pasta dough by mixing the flour and eggs. “The flour we use is the best flour, and it’s expressly milled for us in Italy by Molino Pasini. I think that makes a big difference in our pasta,” states Cosmi.

Step 3:

• “Parboil the fresh spinach, drain it and then mix with the flour and three eggs,” explains Cosmi.

Step 4:

• Use your hands to knead the dough. “The pasta needs to be kneaded for about 10 minutes until the pasta at the touch is smooth and fairly even,” says Cosmi.

Step 5:

• Roll out the dough, stuff the noodles and use a manual wheel cutter to individually cut out each ravioli.

Step 6:

• Cook in salted boiling water. “Pasta will cook in just three minutes if it’s freshly made,” explains Cosmi.

Step 7:

• Once your sauce of choice is added and ready to serve (browned butter and sage is recommended, topped with a sprinkle of grated Parmigiano Reggiano), pair your ravioli with a glass of Sangiovese from Romagna. “The light tannins pair with the spice and the herbal aroma of sage, and they round up the melted butter,” explains Cosmi. Created in 2015 by Scott Richards, Slightly Choppy is a collection of stitched flags and other creative keepsakes with the purpose of connecting people to the spots they cherish most.

H

After working in the surf industry for a number of years while working in his studio in his spare time, Slightly Choppy became Richards’ full-time job. “I started a project based on local surf spots for myself, friends and family; the demand started growing, and it then became my full-time business,” he explains. Richards has been on the creative side in his past roles, serving as the creative director and art director for global brands. “Now, I’m a student of the process. The responsibility of the business has been a challenge for me. I learn as I go; I have to wear all the hats,” says Richards.

The collection of one-of-a-kind flags showcases popular beach destinations such as “San O,” “Wedge” and “El Porto,” among many others. The inspiration behind Richards’ work stems from all aspects of life, specifically being drawn to coastal communities and old, weathered beach towns. “I literally can walk around the neighborhood and find inspiration in things. Signage is important—hand painted signage, street art, packaging, old scholastic manuals, the list goes on and on.” Slightly Choppy has collaborated with like-minded brands over the years. One of his favorite projects was for the Surfrider Foundation for the United States and Oceans of America campaign. “I was asked to design a collection of flags that supported the campaign, and it helped create awareness for people to join together to protect our oceans, waves and beaches,” says Richards. THIS SOCAL COMPANY IS SHAPING THE ART OF POTTERY AS WE KNOW IT WRITTEN BY: DIEGO E. GAXIOLA PHOTOGRAPHED BY: NIKI CRAM Founded over 45 years ago, ARCHPOT is a family-owned small business behind the design and creation of breathtaking fire and water features and gorgeous pottery, found in a multitude of locations around the country. “Something a lot of people don’t know, being a smaller family business, is that we are in some pretty well-known hot spots. The Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas, Fashion Island and The Hilton Waterfront in Orange County and the Ko’a Kea Hotel and Resort in Hawaii!” explains ARCHPOT’s General Manager Tim Hall. An Orange County local, Hall, reminisces of his humble beginnings, detailing how the company transformed from a wholesale nursery to a highly-reputable manufacturer.

Thinking back to his childhood, Hall states, “I have always been creative and originally wanted to become an architect.” After Hall and his family moved from Mission Viejo to Tustin, he began to shadow his father, immersing himself in the art of pottery creation and familiarizing

himself with the challenges often faced when running a business. “The family business started off with plants—we were a wholesale nursery. Later came the marriage of plants and imported pottery, creating Architectural Pottery in 1989,” he says. Hall attributes a lot of his creativity to others’ creations on social media. “People inspire me. I like to see what is out there, and I ask myself how I can do better. How can I put a product out there that people will want in their home or business space?” In 2019, 30 successful years later, the family decided to rebrand the company, unveiling the name ARCHPOT. “Of course, in every family business, there are challenges. Any challenge we have had has resulted in growth,” explains Hall. With the continued expansion of the company, Hall and his team are able to focus on delivering products that truly distinguish themselves from others in the market. From the material and finish process to ARCHPOT’s utilization of high-tech and lightweight cement, the company is constantly striving to create products that exemplify expert craftsmanship. Overseas Inspiration • When Hall was just 17, he took a trip to Greece where he watched handthrown pottery being shaped. It was at that moment he realized the creation of pottery was indeed an art form. In the Works • Currently, ARCHPOT is working on custom Belize fire tables for the historic Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego. “We are taking such pride in this project because of the historic location.”
