HEY, MS. DJ: DJ Dawna’s Guide to Spinning the Tables THROW TOGETHER AN AWESOME PLAYLIST:
1. One of the first things you need to do when preparing for a party is to make sure you know what type of party you’re doing. If I’m playing after another DJ, I’ll just start with whatever tempo they are playing so we can keep the energy going. Then in a few songs I’ll bring the tempo where I want to start. 2. You have to have a diverse playlist. In most clubs people don’t want to hear the same beat all night long; they want familiar songs and they like to be educated. It’s a balance. 3. My biggest and most important thing is you need to know how to read a crowd and the room. If I can get people to move who aren’t on the floor, then it’s only a matter of time before they’re right in front of me going crazy.
Agua Caliente 32-250 Bob Hope Dr, Rancho Mirage, CA 92270 760.321.2000
Ò With rooms offering mountain and desert views, Agua Caliente is emblematic of the local landscape’s natural beauty. Take a dip in one of the casino’s two outdoor pools and hot tub while enjoying the poolside bar and grill. Be sure to enjoy live entertainment while raising the stakes at the 24-hour casino with slots, table games and a poker room.
AND THE CROWD GOES WILD:
1. I had about a three-week period when the same guys came to the club for bottle service at the biggest table. They would come across the dance floor and throw tons of money in my booth. 2. Another time there was a huge roar from the crowd so I looked to my right, and some girl jumped on the bar, took off her top and was dancing out of control. Everybody went nuts. 3. And then there are always a few people who like to squirt champagne all over the crowd. Here’s a note: It’s never a good idea to spill champagne on the DJ and the equipment.
SIGNATURE MOVE:
1. I get pretty into playing music. You’ll always find me singing and carrying on in the booth. At the end of the night I always say, “Stay safe, be good and take care of each other.”

Indian Wells Resort & Spa Pairs Scotch Tasting and Stretching Exercises WRITTEN BY: NICK CIMARUSTI
Ò After a long, stressful day, some prefer to kick
back with a glass of Scotch. Others prefer to blow off steam through a little exercise. The Indian Wells Resort & Spa combined the two methods to create its Scotch and Stretch program, partly inspired by its popular Vino and Vinyasa movement class. After about an hour and a half of class, guests are offered premium cigars and are welcome to lounge by the spa’s reflecting pool to soak in all of their new knowledge of relaxation and whisky.
What that does is enhance the experience of Vino and Vinyasa or Scotch and Stretch. And it also enhances their primary taste, their sense of smell, their sense of memories. We even get them to understand where you’re tasting it when you swirl it around in your mouth. With the wines, some people will just take the shot right away, but with the Scotch they’ll smell it or they’ll look at it and that’s a big difference in enjoying the product. Q: So what does the stretch part entail for Scotch and Stretch? HM: Basically what we do with the stretching is we don’t separate the stretching like we do with [Vino and Vinyasa]. It depends on who shows up, depending on how limber they are, but basically we do all different types of stretches: lateral bends, elbow circles, shoulder stretching, triceps, biceps, chest stretches, lumbar stretch. We try to keep them in just maybe three to five breaths, just to get them to relax. And by the time we get to the next part they’re usually calmed down and ready to go. Q: You said there’s no separation like in Vino and Vinyasa, so are they stretching and sipping at the same time? HM: We do both standing and on mat stretching for 40 straight minutes whereas in the Vino and Vinyasa we do two different types. We do 20 minutes that is standing postures and then we go into white wine tasting, and then we do 20 minutes that’s all on the mat postures and then the red wine tasting. With the Scotch and Stretch, we do all of the stretching first then we go through all of the Scotch tastings and then after that we give them cigars. And usually they want to have another shot of their favorite of the four whiskeys. Q: What’s the typical class demographic like? HM: With the Scotch and Stretch, we definitely get more guys that are interested and we get more couples. It’s something that they can do together. And it’s probably easier to get guys with the Scotch and Stretch than it is to get the guys to the Vino and Vinyasa. I’m hoping that we also go into tequila tasting, too, because it’s that same demographic that does Scotch tasting.
HONRI MARCEL PERSONAL TRAINER AND INSTRUCTOR
Q: Walk me through how a typical Scotch and Stretch session plays out. Honri Marcel: We give them a quick introduction. We talk about it being considered the water of life and make sure they know Scotch is only whisky that’s been produced in Scotland. We do about 40 minutes of stretching and then after that we start with the first Scotch. We have the first section where you’re really looking at the color and the legs around the glass, the texture, then we go into smell for aromas and talk about what they think the alcohol level is. Then we add a little water and go into the actual tasting. Q: What is it about Scotch specifically that enhances the stretching session? HM: The stretching actually should enhance the Scotch tasting. We’re trying to stimulate blood flow, increase flexibility, release muscular tension, reduce their stress and get them breathing in the present moment.
14
LOCALE MAGAZINE Greater Palm Springs 2016
Q: Tequila tastings could get pretty gnarly. HM: It can, but you know we did one where it was a group, a huge group, and it was really highly mixed. Probably a third men, two thirds women and oh my god, you know after even just tasting, it’s like a little party. They really do wanna hang out. It’s kind of funny. But I should be clear, we really keep it at a tasting point so the pours are very small.
“The stretching actually should enhance the Scotch tasting. —HONRI MARCEL
Q: Do you have a favorite whisky? HM: I really like Oban and Chivas Regal, but that’s because my dad was a big Chivas Regal drinker. And the Oban, I was turned on to it by a friend of mine, and then it turned out that the Hyatt carries it. It’s just really elegant, it has an easy finish. You know how some Scotch can go down really harsh in the back of throat? Oban has a really nice finish. And it does make you just want to hold on to it. You’ll see people don’t take it so fast. So we always have to keep that last because we always know they’re going to want more of it. Now, we’ll never do it without an Oban.
“It’s just really elegant, it has an easy finish. —H O N R I M A R C E L
Just Add Water Ò For the palate to properly process Scotch during a tasting, it’s recommended to add a few drops of water. This way the taste won’t be too overwhelming and the flavor notes are more easily detected.
First
Timer’s
Guide
1. Never put your nose inside the glass—the smell can be too potent. 2. Exhale through your mouth while you gently inhale slightly away from the glass. 3. There’s no shame in adding a few drops of water when tasting. 4. Color is never the same as what you smell and taste.

Let Us Take You Behind the Scenes of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells WRITTEN BY: NICK PACHELLI
Ò Every year, one of the
biggest sporting events in California graces Indian Well: The BNP Paribas Open. Legends including Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams dominate the courts and duke it out for major world tour points while hundreds of thousands of spectators and celebrities watch in awe. In the desert, the temperatures can be trying as the tournament runs in early March (March 7-20 this year), but the Indian Wells Tennis Garden keeps players and spectators cool and entertained at one of tennis’ most prestigious events. Here is an inside look at the BNP Paribas Open.
16
LOCALE MAGAZINE Greater Palm Springs 2016
WELCOME TO THE GARDEN
Ò The Indian Wells Tennis Garden covers 54 acres packed with 29 world-class courts and eight acres of exposition space. It’s also home to world-famous Japanese restaurant Nobu.
FULL HOUSE
Ò Last year, the total attendance topped out at 456,672 people. And although we don’t know for sure how many will show up in 2016, with the expected player lineup including greats like Williams and Federer, that number will certainly go up. From attending the tournament yourself you’ll realize just how much of a community is built around the tournament in both its volunteers and spectators. Many visitors to Indian Wells Tennis Garden have been attending the tournament for years and are passing the tradition down to younger generations. It’s not
uncommon to see groups of people wandering the grounds knowing exactly where they’re headed at every moment—the garden is a legacy.
KEEPING THE LIGHTS ON
Ò The BNP Paribas Open is such a fluid and relaxed event thanks to over 1,200 volunteers who staff various positions around the grounds from checking your tickets to opening the gates to ushering you to your courtside seats.
THE BALL KIDS
Ò One of the best parts for many at professional tournaments is realizing that there are over eight ball kids running around stadium court catering to the needs of the players. These ball kids apply for the spots and attend four training sessions leading up to the tournament and work a minimum of five sessions at the tournament. Keep an
eye on these kids and watch how fast their reflexes are as they dodge and snatch tennis balls moving at over 120 miles per hour!
KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE BALL
Ò This is the only professional tennis event currently to provide the Hawkeye line challenge system on all match courts. Did you know players can challenge calls on the court and use a digital system to track the exact spot where the ball landed down to millimeters? Crazy, right?
THE WORLD’S BEST ATHLETES
Ò Every year, more than 300 of the best players in the world—we’re talking world number ones on both men’s and women’s sides—travel to compete for more than $10 million in prize money at the BNP Paribas Open.
SECRET: WHERE TO FIND THE PLAYERS
Ò All the players have their
own warm up routine, but buy a day pass during the early rounds of the tournament and hang out around the soccer field. Many players warm up here by passing a ball around with their coaches, jogging or stretching. They also sign plenty of autographs here.
BIG TIME TENNIS = BIG TIME STADIUMS
Ò Stadium 1 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden is the second largest stadium in the world—second to the US Open’s Arthur Ashe Stadium. The stadium includes over 16,000 seats overlooking center court. It also has 44 luxury suites, press rooms, locker rooms and on-court broadcast booth.
CELEBRITY SIGHTING
Ò Celebs love tennis! Guests from year’s past include Kevin Spacey, Ben Stiller, Kate Walsh, Gladys Knight and Gwen Stefani.

Jeffrey Sanker Tells Us About the World’s Most Hyped Gay Event WRITTEN BY: NICK PACHELLI
Ò Twenty-seven years ago, Jeffrey Sanker started
White Party because he believed the perfect escape, a sort of “gay camp,” resided in beautiful Palm Springs. Now, as one of the world’s largest gay events, Sanker’s multi-day party is annually hosted at various locations around Palm Springs from the convention center to Wet ‘n Wild Water Park, headlined by top DJs and regarded as the premiere event of the pool party season. Check out White Party this year April 9th through the 11th.
JEFFREY SANKER FOUNDER OF WHITE PARTY PALM SPRINGS
18
LOCALE MAGAZINE Greater Palm Springs 2016
Q: What gave you the idea to throw the first White Party? Jeffrey Sanker: I had just moved to California and went out to Palm Springs. I saw how beautiful the desert was and I wanted to get the people out of the nightclubs to go to a sort of “gay camp” for the weekend. It was different from going to a gay nightclub. People were getting outside to go to poolside parties and stay in a hotel that was exclusively gay.
when you first started White Party? JS: We basically started with 500 of my friends. We took over half of what’s now the Hard Rock—it was called the Marquis Hotel back then—and we had a pool party, one DJ and four parties. It was a new scene back then. People were not used to going away for the weekend back then but they came to the desert, saw their friends, made new friends and cried at the end of the weekend when they had to leave. And now, it’s grown into more than 30,000 people with eight parties over four days.
Q: What was the scene like in Palm Springs
Q: Can you describe what the overall
atmosphere is for the weekend? JS: It’s a great camaraderie—friends getting together and new people meeting. I keep using the term “gay camp” and that’s kind of what it is. It’s fun and everyone is friendly. Because of Dinah Shore and White Party, we take over the whole town and it’s a very safe environment to be in. The hotels and parties are all within a walkable distance so no one has to drive. You can drink and walk around and not worry about having to take a cab or a car to get around. Q: For this year’s White Party, what are you most excited about?
JS: I’m revamping the main event this year. White Party itself is getting an overhaul. I brought in a new DJ, Offer Nissim—he’s from Israel. Instead of two main events this year, we’re doing one main event that goes from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. I’m using a different part of the convention center, using the main front entrance. No one has ever seen it at the party before. And I’m redesigning the room so it’s more like a large nightclub. It will have a mezzanine level and it will be more club-looking. We also rent out the entire water park, Wet ’n Wild, on Saturday. It’s gay all day and this is
“It’s a great camaraderie—friends getting together and new people meeting. I keep using the term ‘gay camp’ and that’s kind of what it is. It’s fun and everyone is friendly.” —JEFFREY SANKER
“For me, the outdoor Sunday Tea Dance (when I get to set off 15 minutes of fireworks) is my reward. When I make people cry is also my reward. That’s the best part of the whole weekend.”
Jeffrey’s Tips for Surviving White Party:
—JEFFREY SANKER
really exciting. We have thousands of people with DJs and dancers and we have full run of the entire waterpark. I’m the only one that’s ever rented it out to be all gay. We serve drinks (it’s 21 and over) so you can drink and go on rides and go in the wave pool and dance all at the same time. Q: What’s the most difficult aspect of planning White Party? JS: The logistics of it. We have so many parties that happen in a short period of time. We have
2-3 events a day: a pool party, a nighttime party, an after party. And they all involve setups; there are no nightclubs there so we have to set everything up. We have to bring in sound, lighting, bathrooms, dancefloors, decor, everything from the ground up. There’s over 300 people that work throughout the weekend. Q: What’s the most rewarding part of planning and attending White Party? JS: For me, the outdoor Sunday Tea Dance
(when I get to set off 15 minutes of fireworks) is my reward. When I make people cry is also my reward. That’s the best part of the whole weekend. Q: Do you have a craziest White Story story? JS: Not one I can share. There’s lots of fun things that have happened. We have a lot of entertainers from Lady Gaga to Kesha, Robyn and Mary J. Blige. Sometimes some of the wacky ones like Grace Jones can get a little
crazy and some of the stories revolve around the crazy performers. Q: Any special performers we can look forward to this year? JS: This year we’re going to be less performance based. We have a huge surprise performer at the Sunday Tea Dance. But the focus this year is the music—all about the DJs and the music and the production value. And the big surprise performer will be Sunday. And it’s a legendary performer.
Ò “Sleep, eat and drink water. Those are most important. It’s really hot in the desert. Everyone wants to go to the parties but you have to take a break and sleep in between.”

GUESS WHO’S COMING TO DINAH? Behind the Scenes of the World’s Largest Lesbian Event WRITTEN BY: NICK CIMARUSTI
Ò Twenty-six years ago, Mariah Hanson started Dinah Shore Weekend because she
believed her community deserved the best of the best. Now, as the world’s largest lesbian event, Hanson’s music festival is annually hosted by The Hilton and regarded as the five-day celebration of the pool party season. This year, Dinah is being headlined by Elle King and DJ Samantha Ronson, among other acts.

LOCALE MAGAZINE Greater Palm Springs 2016
Q: What gave you the idea to throw the first Dinah Shore Weekend in 1991? Mariah Hanson: I threw pretty amazing parties in college and it was a natural segue to start throwing some parties around the Dinah Shore Golf Tournament, which was well attended by lesbians. My first party was at the Palm Springs Art Museum. We took over the entire museum. Girls could drink a martini and lean on a Rodin. We approached the entire weekend with a lesbian-first, we’re-worth-
it attitude. Our message was lesbian pride. Q: So what would you say the overall atmosphere is for the weekend? MH: It’s Woodstock meets lesbian spring break. It has this feel good, lovefest element to it because it’s very important to us that we are creating a tolerant, all-inclusive environment. Everybody just drops their preconceptions, and they become what we call Dinah-fied. At the Dinah all those limitations melt away into this really beautiful festival of unity and celebration and most
importantly living out loud. I think often times LGBT people suffer from low self-esteem so for five days we work as hard as we can to help build that self esteem and tell every person that walks through those doors that they are worth it. Q: For this year’s Dinah, what are you most excited about? MH: We just announced Elle King. We have a really cool lineup. It’s very DJ-driven this year. Q: Do you have a favorite year for Dinah? MH: Probably 2009, it was really amazing because
we booked Lady Gaga and Katy Perry. It was an honor to put them on stage. It’s crazy because we’re putting people on our stage who get so famous we couldn’t afford them the next year. Q: What’s the most difficult aspect of planning Dinah? MH: The entire event is putting out fires behind the scenes. We don’t call ourselves producers— we call ourselves fire battalions. There’s a stress that goes handin-hand with production that is both exhilarating and challenging. But the

Rule No. 1
goal is to make it look like anybody can do it. If you can make your event look like it was easy to produce, you’ve done a very good job. Q: Do you have a favorite part of planning Dinah? MH: I love catching the concerts because I get to sit in the mojo seats. Those are the high-end concert seats that are
right before the stage. That’s one of the perks of what I do; I see these concerts like nobody sees them. Q: What’s the craziest Dinah story that you can think of? MH: One year the winds were really terrible, like crazy winds. And so Leisha Hailey and Camila Grey of Uh Huh Her were being interviewed in the
lobby of the Riviera, and they have huge skylights on top of the building. The wind must have picked something up, and the skylight just burst. And I swear to god it missed Leisha and Cam (and me!) by a foot. So we were like, OK interview’s over! We’re done! That was actually one of the scariest things that’s ever happened.
Q: Will anything be new this year at Dinah? MH: We’re doing a dunk tank. It’s a celebrity dunk tank and 100 percent of the proceeds are going toward the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center, and we’re going to match the donation. We’re also going to do a massive game of Twister and beer pong.

Whether it’s Instagramming the colorful boulders of Salvation Mountain or expanding your mind inside the Integratron, the Coachella Valley offers no shortage of spots to visit, all within driving distance of your stay in La Quinta. Ò For a dose of the spiritual, Salvation Mountain is the place to go. Lovingly constructed and cared for by Leonard Knight until he passed away in 2014, Salvation Mountain is 50 feet of adobe, straw and donated paint along with some found objects. The painted mounds and grottoes of Salvation Mountain are Leonard’s reminder to visitors that “God is Love” and beauty is best found through simple devotion. Now, Salvation Mountain Inc. preserves and displays Leonard’s masterpiece, so visitors can continue their pilgrimage to the beloved murals. Be sure to bring some paint in Leonard’s honor. Love Is All You Need: Leonard Knight originally envisioned Salvation Mountain as a patchwork hot air balloon to spread his message of love.

Ò Declared a national park in 1994, Joshua Tree has 12 nature trails, five day hikes and two riding and hiking trails. Park rangers lead “I Speak for the Trees” walks, where visitors can learn about the park’s iconic (and namesake) trees. You can also explore the backcountry roads by mountain bike or 4-wheel drive vehicle. This time of the year, the sun sets early in the park, around 5 p.m., giving you a better chance to observe the desert’s nocturnal wildlife: bighorn sheep, kangaroo rats, coyotes, snakes and black-tailed jackrabbits. At night, you’ll also have a chance to view the Milky Way without the interference of city lights.
Ò Follow the good vibrations toward the white desert dome and you might think you’ve stumbled upon a second Griffith Observatory, but actually this is the Integratron. Nowadays, the Integratron is primarily used for 60-minute sound bath sessions, in which crystal bowls and music provide sonic healing. Musicians, astronomers, yoga and meditation groups, scientists and sound therapists all flock to the Integratron. George Van Tassel, engineer and UFOlogist, was partly inspired to build the Integratron by telepathic communication with Venusian extraterrestrials.
Winter is Coming: Tuesday, Dec. 22 is the winter solstice, the shortest day and longest night of the year. Use this chance to view the Orion constellation and nebula, which is best seen in December.
Washed Out: Sound baths from the Integratron are available by appointment only, Wednesdays through Mondays. The Integratron is closed Tuesdays. There are no tours.

Ò Don’t be fooled by the name—you’ll feel more alive than you have in years after a visit to Death Valley. During the winter months, the Panamint Mountains are often snowcapped and spring and summer paint the valley in droves of wildflowers. A trip to Death Valley calls for being extra bad: driving along Badwater Road, checking out the salt flats of Badwater Basin (which is the lowest point in North America) and exploring the badlands. Zabriskie Point is the perfect sunset spot, and at night you can explore the sand dunes under a full moon or go star watching during the new moon. Dead Man Walking: Feeling spooky? Venture out to Goldwell Open Air Museum in Rhyolite, Nev., where late Belgian artist Albert Szukalski constructed “The Last Supper,” a group of ghostly statues that are open to the public 24/7, if you dare.

Ò Sometimes an accident can lead to a good thing, like in 1905 when a leak in the Imperial County irrigation system created the Salton Sea. Nearly two decades later, the Salton Sea has become known as a hotspot for speed boat races and other aquatic sports. Each year, 1 million travelers visit the Salton Sea, which is California’s largest lake and the third largest saline lake in the nation. The Varner Harbor jetty lets fishermen catch unlimited amounts of tilapia and the Salton Sea is also a major destination for migrating birds. A Dash of Salt: Around 600 tons of salt are deposited into the Salton Sea each year by irrigation water from the Colorado River.

STEEL HOUSES
Ò As an initiative to bring affordable, prefabricated houses to the public, architects Donald Wexler and Ric Harrison worked alongside US Steel and Alexander Construction Company to create what are known as Wexler’s Steel Houses. The first homes were constructed in 1961 and were furnished by famed architect Arthur Elrod. After a period of restoration, the City of Palm Springs gave the houses Class 1 Historical Site status. In 2012, Steel Development House No. 2 was the first midcentury structure added to the National Register of Historic Places by the U.S. Department of the Interior.

Ò You may recognize this home from the 1971 James Bond flick Diamonds Are Forever! Designed and built by famed architect John Lautner in 1968, this 23-acre estate incorporates the giant boulders into the home’s interior. The unique 5-bedroom, nearly 9,000-square-foot home has real Hollywood appeal—it’s been seen in many films, including Iron Man, Die Hard, Pulp Fiction and The Big Lebowski.
KAUFMANN DESERT HOUSE
Ò Designed in 1946 by architect Richard Neutra, this modern home features sleek lines, a stone chimney and metallic accents that fit harmoniously with the desert and mountain landscape. The 3,162-square-foot home was originally designed for department store magnate Edgar J. Kaufman and includes some interesting features: an outdoor sleeping area, sprawling lawns and a bright blue pool.
THE KENNEDY/ LAWFORD HOME
Ò This home once belonged to Rat Pack member Peter Lawford and his wife Patricia Kennedy, President John F. Kennedy’s sister. The open-beamed, midcentury home sits in the exclusive Vista Las Palmas neighborhood, once a major hangout for Hollywood celebrities. Often a place for A-list get-togethers, President Kennedy was said to have stayed here after turning down an offer from famed singer Frank Sinatra.
PALM SPRINGS CITY HALL
Ò Famed midcentury architect Albert Frey designed Palm Springs City Hall in 1952 and the spot is a must on the Palm Springs modern design tour. Located in the heart of downtown Palm Springs, the hall showcases metal piping fashioned into a sun-shield at the front of the building. This signature sun-shield keeps the building cool while adding unique architectural details. The aluminum screens take on different appearances as the sun moves throughout the day.
COOL STORY, BRO
“You can’t make some of this stuff up, believe me.” BRIAN ELLIS, MAÎTRE D’ OF MELVYN’S Q: What are some of your favorite anecdotes from your 41 years at Melvyn’s? BE: “We had just opened, everyone was in suits and ties and tuxes. STEVE MCQUEEN shows up on a motorcycle. We had to ask him to leave, not knowing who he was, of course, because he wasn’t dressed properly. The reason we found out he was Steve McQueen is because there’s a restaurant half a dozen blocks from us called Lyons English Grille and the valet sent ALI MACGRAW and STEVE MCQUEEN over to Melvyn’s for opening night to check the place out. And, of course, our maître d’ is at the door and he sees the motorcycle pull up and he says, ‘Boss, check this out. I can’t have that.’ So we went out to him, real nice to him, and said, ‘It’s our first night and you need a suit, could you come back another night?’ And he said sure and drove off.”
“MARLON BRANDO used to come
here a lot. One of the first times he came here I asked him if it would be all right if my boss Mr. Haber would get his picture with him. He said, ‘I’d be happy to.’ We had no film in the camera. So we never got that picture.”
TWIN PALMS ESTATE
Ò Architect E. Stewart Williams designed this Palm Springs landmark for Frank Sinatra and his first wife in 1947. The home, now considered a shining example of midcentury style, features a piano-shaped swimming pool and sleek details that span the 4,500 square feet of living space. This architecturally significant home is also home to legendary Hollywood tales Frank Sinatra was known to throw wild parties and alerted neighbors to cocktail hour by hoisting a Jack Daniels flag between the estate’s famed twin palms. Rumor has it, a chip in the driveway was made when Frank shattered a champagne bottle during an argument with former flame Ava Gardner.
“I’ll tell you who’s a sweetheart of a lady— DEBBIE REYNOLDS. Any time she does a show out here, she always stays here. She always stays late and drinks white Zinfandel. We did Debbie Reynolds’ mother’s 75th birthday party here.”
TRAMWAY GAS STATION
Ò Known for its space-age design, this midcentury icon is now the home of the Palm Springs Visitors Center. It was formerly an Enco Gas Station, called the “Tramway Gas Station” for its location at the end of Tramway Road, the long stretch of land leading to the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. The metal roof takes on an elongated kite shape, geometrically called a hyperbolic paraboloid, that gives it a stark appearance among the rugged natural landscape. It was constructed in 1963 by Albert Frey and Robson C. Chambers.
“Let’s talk about FRANK SINATRA’S pre-wedding dinner. When we booked that, he bought out the entire restaurant. We were walking on eggshells because we knew the importance of that night at our restaurant. You have all the who’s who in politics, you had WALTER and MRS. ANNENBERG here, anybody who was anybody was here that night. We probably saw more heads of state, more Hollywood people, than all the years we’d been here. We were shaking in our boots. We knew we were going to pull it off, but you take a look around at the people he’d brought—DEAN MARTIN —and that’s enough to scare anybody. But it went off with no problems.”
