EDITORIAL

“Put your hand on a hot stove for a minute and it seems like an hour. Sit with a pretty girl for an hour, and it seems like a minute.”—Albert Einstein Hopelessly sitting next to your broken down car on the side of the highway in 108-degree heat is hell. Sitting with your feet in a pool, under an umbrella with a drink in your hand in the same 108-degree heat is heaven. Experiencing the beautiful and diverse nine cities that we refer to on this issue’s cover as "Greater Palm Springs" has always been about perspective. We choose to see the heavenly side of the desert. LOCALE Magazine began as a dream on a napkin over six years ago. I was a successful—yet unhappy—salesperson for Mercedes-Benz before deciding one day to make a change. I was going to make a magazine. Everyone said that I was crazy. They said print was dead. I didn't think so. I believed people wanted to know more about their community. I wanted to tell a story in a unique way. I had no idea how to make a magazine. Where to print it? Who would take the photos? I had a lot to learn. I took photos myself, wrote stories at night, delivered magazines out of my tiny Jetta and even used my twocar garage as the storage facility for our first 20,000 issues. Five months after starting LOCALE Magazine, we had our first issue completed and threw a launch party for our very first Orange County issue. I won't bore you with much more history, but will let you know that the little operation in the garage is now making magazines in San Diego and Los Angeles as well as Orange County. The issue you are holding is our very first issue covering Greater Palm Springs. We have spent countless days in your neighborhoods researching stories, taking photos and making friends. We only hope that you feel it is a great representation of where you live. ERIK HALE PUBLISHER

Making THE ISSUE

As our first Greater Palm Springs cover, Gray Malin provided the perfect combination of vibrancy, fun and chicness that everyone associates with the desert cities. Inspired by the photographer’s eye-catching work, the team had a ton of fun setting up the shoot with lots of beachballs, inner tubes and balloons. When it came to dressing Gray for the shoot, stylist Manuel Parra experimented with bold prints and colors that were still classic and tailored: “When we think of Gray Malin, we immediately think of fun beaches, vibrant objects and a sense of ease. Gray has a very classic style of dress, so it was important to start with this and build onto it, creating a fun and happy mood for every look. We styled him in fun prints, vibrant solids and kept him barefoot in almost every picture to fully captivate the sense of ease that Gray’s pictures convey.” Makeup artist Brian Bond wanted to keep Gray looking sun-kissed and glowing for this lively, springtime look: “For Gray's shoot, it was important to keep the skin fresh and clean. Combining my favorite primers from MAC Cosmetics with their tinted moisturizer and clear brow set we achieved a dewy summer vibe that photographed awesome and lasted the whole day!" Photographer Taylor Lewis was inspired by the pristine and precise nature of Gray’s work. She tried to stay as true as possible to the photographer’s aesthetic while adding a unique twist to every photo.

THE PUBLIC

Ò We don’t have much ethnic food here, so Rooster and the Pig is a welcome addition. Its Vietnamese dishes are simply delicious, taken from family recipes of owner Tai Spendley. FOB (fresh off the boat) is a clear winner and is meant for sharing. Spring Rolls and Summer Rolls are always in season.

EXPERT: Joe Enos CREDENTIALS: Publicist, Palm Springs

Ò I’m a big fan of the chili dog, but others swear by the sliders and the Suzanne Somers-inspired bun-less burger, “the Somersized” [at Tyler’s]. This is Palm Springs’ Cheers where Judy and Diana know everyone’s name. Burger or hot dog, don’t miss the hand-made milkshakes. Lunch only.

Ò The best way to explore Palm Springs’ neighborhoods is on a bike—and the city has miles of bike lanes on its streets. Best of all, the terrain is flat. With more than 360 days of sunshine, biking is a great way to see landmark architecture and burn off the calories from a week’s worth of dining out.

Ò Casual and chic, The Barn Kitchen serves the finest chicken salad sandwich in town. The garden setting is even better than a friend’s backyard; this is one of Palm Springs’ best-kept secrets.

Ò Who would miss the chance to enjoy a $2 taco? Taco Tuesday at El Jefe is the original and longestrunning in town. Inspired by the street vendors of Mexico City, these tacos rock and come in a variety savory offerings. The $5 margarita is pretty good, too. thesaguaro.com

Ò I do like secrets (see above), so there’s no doubt I’m in love with Brush stylist Barry Nadeau. This one-man, one-chair salon in the Uptown Design district is a private, full service salon for cuts, colors and more. Insider’s tip: After your first visit, you’re always greeted with your favorite cocktail. I’m on a Four Roses Bourbon jag at the moment.

Ò A relaxing way to end a weekend is to drop by SO•PA at L’Horizon Resort & Spa for The Communal Hour and have a cocktail at the restaurant’s 26foot communal dining table. This is Palm Springs’ haute happy hour popular amongst neighbors and insiders, offered Sunday-Thursday from 5:00 p.m.-6:30 p.m. Nice to know: A portion of sales during their Communal Hour supports a local charity. lhorizonpalmsprings.com

Ò I don’t like to go home for the weekend unless I’m armed with a supply of fresh bread and pastries from Peninsula Pastries in the Sun Center in Palm Springs. Owners Helene and Christophe moved here from France and bake everything fresh every day, using all non-GMO flours and ingredients. The baguettes are incredible.

HERSTORY EXPERT: Jeri Vogelsang CREDENTIALS: Director and Curator of the Palm Springs Historical Society

Ò My favorite peaceful retreat is only a 5-minute drive from Downtown Palm Springs. It’s the Palm Springs Indian Canyons, and early on a weekday morning is the best time to visit. Originally inhabited by the indigenous Cahuilla Indians and still maintained as their sacred land, the ancient palms and flowing streams transport visitors back to a time before there were people, and always rejuvenate the body and mind. Step into the Trading Post in Palm Canyon for a snack or souvenir, or visit the interpretive center in Tahquitz Canyon. indian-canyons.com

Ò For pizza, there’s nothing quite like Bill’s Pizza, located in the historic La Plaza shopping center in Downtown Palm Springs. Just pizza and salads here, but the parmesan crust they use in their pizza is unsurpassed. billspizzapalmsprings.com

Ò A Palm Springs institution is Tyler’s, also located in La Plaza. Known by locals for their hamburgers, they also make the best veggie burger in town, but it’s their sides of coleslaw and potato salad made from family recipes that keep the line winding around the restaurant. Their patio has that open-air feel of a beach diner/ neighborhood hangout. Open for lunch only, by the way. tylersburgers.com

Ò I am fortunate in that I work in a place—the Palm Springs Historical Society—where I would go for fun if I weren’t working here! Located in The Village Green in the heart of the city, the Historical Society features museums in the two oldest buildings still standing in Palm Springs: The McCallum Adobe and The Cornelia White House. Don’t miss the exhibit on Frank Sinatra’s years in Palm Springs in the McCallum Adobe through May, complete with a swinging soundtrack of Sinatra tunes. I often make stops after work at the Palm Springs Art Museum and its Architecture and Design Museum, both open until 8:00 p.m. on Thursdays with free admission. pshistoricalsociety.org psmuseum.org

Ò I’m a big fan of ethnic food, and one of my favorite Mexican restaurants is found in the south end of Palm Springs: La Perlita. Family owned and run, they have the best chile rellenos I’ve ever eaten, and their salsa is delicious.

I am fortunate in that I work in a place—the Palm Springs Historical Society— where I would go for fun if I weren’t working here!

Ò To experience “Old Palm Springs,” a trip back in time to Palm Springs’ celebrity heyday can be found at Melvyn’s Restaurant in the Ingleside Inn, housed in a 1924 historic Spanishstyle home converted to a charming hotel. You will think time stopped in 1968. The Sunday brunch with the piano bar providing the mood transports me to a more genteel time—They still have consommé on the menu! inglesideinn.com

Ò Our family is very health conscious, and because our son Nicky has dietary restrictions, Luscious Lorraine’s Deli & Juice Bar has always been our go-to lunch spot. It is a wonderful local grocery store for organic, vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free lifestyles. You’re sure to find plenty of unique and fresh eats, vitamins, supplements, tea and household items. Our favorite is the Super Green Avo smoothie!

Ò Before heading to work, we meet up with friends and family at Il Corso for an early dinner. We love their wood oven pizza—it is arguably one of the best in town! A great place if you want authentic Italian food since Chef Mario Marfia is from Sicily. Make sure to save room for the homemade desserts.

Ò The Karl Vasquez Salon is located right next door to the Nest Restaurant, so Dodi is a regular here and stops by for a mid-week mani/pedi or a quick cut and color. They’re highly recommended and offer a wide range of services. Truly an elite team of hair, nail, and skin care pros!

THE EXPER T

TAI SPENDLEY Owner, Rooster and the Pig

Tai’s Dreams of Serving Steamed Rice Flour Stuffed with Pork

Talking to Tai Spendley, the restaurateur behind the popular Palm Springs eatery Rooster and the Pig, the passion and soul put into this project becomes obvious. Immigrating to the states from Vietnam, the son of an American soldier and local Vietnamese woman had very humble beginnings: “I started off as a dishwasher at the age of 13. After school I would dishwash because I was like, ‘I’m gonna buy myself some clothes.’ I wound up in the restaurant business.” Always the front of the house, charismatic Spendley learned the restaurant business from the inside-out, eventually acting as food and beverage director for a wide range of upscale hotels across the country. With his culinary inspiration on overdrive, Spendley decided to develop a Vietnamese-American concept, Rooster and the Pig, a name derived from two seemingly opposing astrological figures who happen to be a perfect match.

Q: Starting your own restaurant is such an ambitious project! How did you get the inspiration to start Rooster and the Pig? Tai Spendley: It’s funny because all of my friends have been in the business and we always think about it in terms of, “I’ve been in the business for so long, it’s only natural that I do my own thing,” but I’ve always wondered where the hell do you start? I did know what not to do. I worked for so many places and businesses and I figured out what matters and what doesn’t. What people come to a place for is service and food.

“There were points that were like, just out of necessity, you have to figure out how to do it.” —TA I S P E N D L E Y

Q: What role did food play in your life while growing up? TS: My dad was in the military and met my mom. I was born in Vietnam and came over [to the United States] young. My dad didn’t like Vietnamese food and my mom wasn’t sure about American food. Back then, she was doing fusion before fusion was popular. A lot of first generation parents were doing that anyway. When we first came to this country, we were pretty poor; the kids would make fun of our clothes and this and that. But that was the one thing that made me feel like we weren’t ever poor—my mom always made sure that, for dinner, we had so many choices. She would take leftovers and make them feel like they weren’t leftovers anymore. As I got older, I started watching people do “fancy stuff” like putting on dinner parties so I thought I would do the same thing and people enjoyed themselves. That’s what I loved about it. Q: How would you describe the menu at Rooster and the Pig? TS: People think that Vietnamese is just phð but it’s more than that. This is how we cook at home. They’re real traditional Vietnamese recipes. Vietnamese food is very simplistic but at the same time it tastes very layered. What I always thought when people asked if this food was fusion was, “This is just Vietnamese-American.” Q: What does “Vietnamese-American” mean to you? TS: When I was growing up, there’s a popular dish called Bún Bò Hué and if it was to be traditional, it would have shrimp paste in it and pigs foot sticking out of it. What my mom did with the food was she learned how to have my father eat it with his palate. She would omit certain things but still create the flavor. I noticed she could take all the pungent, esoteric ingredients and take them out and refine the dish. I realized that’s how I came up with the concept of the restaurant and the food—creating things we ate at home. Instead of using lotus stem for a Vietnamese

sweet and sour fish soup, my mom would use celery, but if you gave it to someone from Vietnam they’d be like, “What’s this?” Q: You have one of the most up-and-coming restaurants in Palm Springs. What is the secret to your success? TS: You know, I think it’s because I don’t take myself so seriously. That’s the honest truth. I don’t try to make something whimsical. It’s funny, I bumped into my friend the other day and he said, “I eat at your restaurant and I love the food, but what I love most is that you don’t take yourself too seriously. You use that blue tape to hang everything.” The wall is just full of blue tape—I don’t want to buy a frame for [certificates] the city is forcing me to hang! Q: What was your main motivation to start the restaurant? TS: I got so sick of working for other people, I just wanted my own place. I moved to Chicago because I needed to get out of the desert and it revitalized what I thought about food. I came back and I thought, “I’m going to sell my house and start a restaurant.” I think it was one of those things where the more you talk about it, the more you manifest it.

Q: Were there ever some tough moments when building Rooster and the Pig from the ground up? TS: There were points that were like, just out of necessity, you have to figure out how to do it. I enlisted a few friends with tools and we just did it. You should have seen it. I went to Jo-Ann Fabric and I couldn’t believe the foam was so expensive! I got the material and I started reupholstering. We didn’t have any light, so my friend brought two lights from her closet and she held them up [while Spendley worked]. People would walk by and say, “Well, that’s commitment.” I think that adds to the whole environment of the place. It feels more organic. Q: What do you love most about working and living in Palm Springs? TS: The heat sucks, but after living here, you tend to like the heat more than the cold. The reason why I like it here is you can be very anonymous. When I lived in LA or New York, you would see the same people every day at the same spots when you got off work. The quality of life here is really good; it’s not super expensive like most cities. You don’t have to deal with parking or traffic. You can just get things done.

WILMA & FRIEDA 73575 El Paseo Dr Palm Desert, CA 92260 760.773.2807 www.wilmafrieda.com

Ò One of our favorite spots for meals as beautiful as they are delectable, is Wilma & Frieda’s Cafe at The Gardens on El Paseo. This restaurant has picture-perfect dishes that will excite your palate and wow your Insta-followers. Just as powerful as the team of Wilma and Frieda—the grandmothers of the Cafe owners—is the partnership of banana and caramel in their dish, Kim’s Banana Caramel French Toast. Thick golden brown slices of bread are topped with perfectly ripened fresh bananas and warm caramel. The dish is artistically drizzled with sour cream to finish off the frame—and give your taste buds the sour to complement the sweet. Snag a seat by the window to allow the natural light to grace this coveted dish—no filter necessary here. The view of The Gardens on El Paseo also lends an opportunity to take in the passersby as they look onto your table, wishing they could be indulging in some Banana Caramel French Toast of their own. If you are in a savory mood, we suggest Mark’s Short Rib Eggs Benedict. Two perfectly prepared eggs rest on top of tender short rib, home made English muffin, a hollandaise made in-house, and are topped with vibrant green sautéed arugula. Amber egg yolk contrasts beautifully against the rich chocolate color of short rib—a sight worth capturing. If you have enough self control to snap a photo before diving into this dish, you will be guaranteed a foodie following in minutes. 36 | LOCALE MAGAZINE

Greater Palm Springs Drink Experts’ Words of Wisdom

WRITTEN BY: LAUREN VILLA PHOTOGRAPHED BY: ARTURO GONZALES

S C OT T W I N A N T, Food and Beverage Director at Vue Grille + Bar

BRENT SCHMIDMAN, Founder, Coachella Valley Brewing

Q: What is your favorite cocktail to create? SW: I’m a whiskey drinker, so I keep it simple. My favorite drink to make is a Manhattan. You can do anything with it and add a little flair depending on the kind of whiskey. You can use a whiskey from anywhere around the world really—Irish whiskey or Japanese whiskey. Different bitters give you an opportunity to play with the cocktail. For me, that’s my go-to. You’re seeing a revival of the brown spirits these days.

Q: What makes a great drink? BS: We use all local ingredients and our brewmaster is a certified chef. You’ve heard of farm to table? Well, he’s big into farm to glass and that’s really what the brewery is founded on. We get a lot of local ingredients from the east side of the Valley. We get a lot of citrus and we use dates, different spices and things that are grown here in the Coachella Valley. We give back our spent grain to farmers so it goes full circle. We’re proud of that.

Q: What makes a great drink? JD: When the bartender or mixologist puts a lot of love and effort into it and it becomes a personal drink. It’s not just like a vodka soda or something that’s easy to make. When you make a drink for somebody with their own flavors, when you try to make a drink just for them, that goes a long way.

Q: What is your signature that differentiates you from everyone else? DF: We do good cocktails without the attitude. The ambiance is super welcoming and we give the customer a good product. There is a big backyard with games in the back, so you have options— you’re not just sitting around and drinking.

Q: What is your signature that differentiates you from everyone else? DC: These last six or seven years, I threw myself into this whole spirit and cocktail scene. It’s exciting to me because I’m learning and it’s a creative outlet—I never want to stop learning and I don’t want to ever stop being creative. That gives me my drive.

Q: What makes a great drink? AB: Fresh ingredients are the key. At Hadley Fruit Orchards, we use only the freshest Deglet Nour dates and we mix them with our signature creamy ice cream to make our iconic date shakes. Our shakes have made Hadley’s a must stop for generations of desert travelers and local families.

Torch A Night Out with Bootlegger Tiki WRITTEN BY: GINA MAGNUSON

P

alm Springs’ Uptown Design District is bustling with a new generation of local entrepreneurs. Jaime Kowal, alongside her partner Chris Pardo, run two of the area’s most popular businesses: Ernest Coffee and Bootlegger Tiki. The Palm Springs Chamber of Commerce honored these locations each with a 2015 Small Businesses of the Year Award—a measure of success for the industrious duo. With an array of projects on the horizon, Jamie and Chris are reinvigorating the desert with their entrepreneurial spirit

Q & A with Jaime Kowal, Co-Owner and Co-Founder of Bootlegger Tiki and Ernest Coffee Q: What's the story behind Bootlegger Tiki? Why did you decide to create a themed bar? Jaime Kowal: We are located in the same space as the original Don the Beachcomber restaurant that opened in 1953. Given we were fortunate enough to inherit an incredible piece of Palm Springs history, we wanted to draw upon and honor the tiki traditions that were originally built here. The original tiki torches on the exterior of the building are still lit every night and many of our customers remember dining at Don the Beachcomber and share their stories with us. Don the Beachcomber’s original name was Ernest Raymond Beaumont Gantt and he was a bootlegger during The Prohibition, so we named the bar after him. Q: Why did you settle in Palm Springs? What do you love about the area? JK: Chris and I both moved here at the same time—at the end of 2012. Chris likes how this community responds to architecture. We both love the endless sunshine, the physical beauty—the mountains and light, the creative community and supportive business environment. 40 | LOCALE MAGAZINE

Q:Where are your favorite hangouts in the desert? JK: We tend to work and play mostly in Palm Springs but there are a lot of great restaurants, hikes and shopping throughout the desert that we love to support: Cheeky’s, Melvyn’s, Mr. Lyons, Il Corso, The Venue Sushi, Karaoke Tuesdays at The Ace, Pappy and Harriet’s and The Barn at Sparrows Lodge. Q: Describe your typical Saturday night in Palm Springs. Where are the best late night places to head out for a night on the town? JK: Spending an afternoon poolside with friends and cocktails on one of the many patios at sunset is a lovely way to start the evening. I particularly love the patio at Birba and So.Pa and they both have great cocktails. Dinner at Mr. Lyons is delicious—you can sit in the bar for a more casual meal but still order off their fine dining menu. We’ll head over to Bootlegger Tiki afterwards for a nightcap. It’s always busy and the vibe is really fun and energetic. If you’re in the mood for a late night, you can sing along to the show tunes at the bar Spurline. It’s always a riot and on a Saturday night you’ll typically get the whole bar singing along to the classics.

F R OM A D I FFE RE NT CLOT H CHRISTIAN SIRIANO IS AN UNSTOPPABLE FORCE IN THE FASHION WORLD

WRITTEN BY: ELIZABETH NUTT PHOTOGRAPHED BY: GIL COPE

Christian didn’t just fall into a career in fashion—he fought for it, starting at a young age. Raised in Annapolis, Maryland, Christian transferred as a high school student to the Baltimore School For the Arts so that he’d have an opportunity to study fashion design. It was a subject he’d come to love—thanks, in part, to his sister, who studied ballet. Christian recalls joining his sister backstage during performances and garnering early inspiration from her costumes, hair and makeup. But it was his high school experience that officially cultivated his love for fashion.

“It was an amazing experience for a student to be thrown into this world of creativity at such a young age. I was still learning what I loved and what direction I wanted to take my life,” explains Christian. “I had an amazing mentor, Steven Kent, who helped guide me and support my love of fashion.” hristian went on to attend the American Intercontinental University of London, where he continued his studies in fashion design and fine art. He describes his international college experience, which immersed him in both the city’s culture and its street style, as both liberating and inspiring. Of course, it’s difficult for many young designers to find success in the fashion industry, but fortunately for Christian, he had an opportunity to learn from some of the best. Internships with the likes of Vivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen and Marc Jacobs instilled in him some practical lessons he continues to apply to his own collection today— such as celebrating creativity and creating an environment where a handson design team takes prides in its work.

To keep up with the industry’s rapid pace, Christian is constantly on the lookout for inspiration—from songs, travel, interior design, colors, animals, you name it, and he can design a collection from it. His process is similar from collection to collection: first, he starts with “a story,” and then he gathers fabrics that help him convey that story. He examines shapes and silhouettes, and removes and adds details until the story comes to life. He likens the process to a puzzle. “In my

experience I was just fearless and really had nothing to lose. So that was my secret weapon—to just go for things and make decisions quickly and hope they work out.”

And though no two collections are alike, the end game for Christian is consistent. “One can be very romantic and ethereal and another powerful and bold. I do try to make each collection have those elements to some degree but I just want the clothing to celebrate women and their lifestyle,” he says.

He has, in fact, always been about his female customers and giving “Experiences are very important in this them what they want—at every business,” says Christian. He credits price point. He’s designed multiple his attitude and work ethic to the collections of affordable shoes and journey that’s led him to become a red handbags for Payless ShoeSource, —CHRISTIAN carpet staple. “In my experience I was and he’s worked on a makeup line for SIRIANO just fearless and really had nothing to Victoria’s Secret. But the designer lose,” says Christian. “So that was my also boasts an impressive list of secret weapon—to just go for things and make high-profile clients, which include Oprah, decisions quickly and hope they work out.” Gwyneth Paltrow and Taylor Swift. And work out they did; Christian’s coming up on his collection’s ninth year. And though his label is evolving constantly, he continues to bring back the colorful and bold designs that were characteristic of some of his first pieces. “It has been a wonderful struggle to create and brand and find my customer. The collection has grown so much from the first season because the customer has grown and the retailers change and fashion moves so quickly,” says Christian.

When asked about his career highlights thus far, the designer explains that it’s gratifying enough for him to see women wearing his clothes both in “real life” and on the red carpet. “Just to know that there are people out there that love what I’m trying to do, those are the best moments sometimes,” he says. “I’m just excited to keep going.”

KEEP IT SIMPLE:

The clothing designer’s everyday look? Jeans, a t-shirt and a black blazer.

NATIVE KNOWLEDGE: Christian has designed almost everything— including the fairy costumes for Disney’s 2014 The Pirate Fairy movie.

The beach image is universal: white sands, blue waters, and pops of color found in everything from surfboards and umbrellas, to bikinis and beach toys. Artists—from French impressionists to modernday plein air painters—have sought to recreate its beauty, standing on the shore in close proximity to crashing waves and gulls. But photographer Gray Malin, on the other hand, saw the beach through a different lens—one high up in the air, above the scene he wished to capture. He is famous for his aerial photographs, but perhaps more so for pushing the boundaries of what is possible when it comes to artistry. Subsequently, he has changed his viewers’ perspectives entirely on an age-old image that he has single-handedly reinvented. ray is an artist who fell into his craft early. As fate would have it, his grandfather possessed a beautiful collection of cameras; the hobby was passed down to Gray’s father, too—who, according to Gray, always had a camera in tow. While Gray was in high school, he discovered his own passion for photography, which has defined and shaped his life ever since. “I don't remember exactly the first time I shot but it was definitely when I was a youngster. Then, I first discovered the dark room in high school. The experience was addicting, watching my images slowly come to life in the developing trays,” he recalls. He attributes much of his success today to his high school photography teacher, Janis Hefley, and his post-college mentor and fellow photographer Aline Smithson. But Gray’s passion for taking photographs undoubtedly played a role in his garnering of worldwide recognition. He has, so to speak, always seen the world through his camera lens.

Gray discovered aerial photography, for which he’s widely known today, almost accidentally. During his first flight over Miami, Gray glanced out the window, and was awestruck by what he saw. “My attention became transfixed on the beach. From above, the people with their umbrellas and towels create patterns that are eye catching and unique in that they are mere moments in time that can never be captured again,” he says. Though he had photographed swimming pools from above, the experience over Miami gave him a new idea: to capture beaches all over the world from the vantage point of a helicopter. Gray has spent the last five years traveling across multiple countries, spanning six continents. But it’s been no easy journey. The process of taking aerial photographs is difficult—if not outright dangerous. But Gray finds it exhilarating, intoxicating, even. He shoots, with a Canon EOS 5 DSR, from a door-less helicopter at varying altitudes, depending on the legalities and weather conditions at each location. And Gray finds

pure joy in the fact that he doesn’t know what to expect from each place until he has perspective from above. “I think that a lot of times people assume my aerials are shot with a drone or perhaps simply created on a computer, but it’s really me going up in the helicopter and leaning out the side to find beautiful timeless imagery. I couldn’t imagine doing it any other way, as the vision truly comes alive from above for me,” he says. Gray garners inspiration from his travels, and Camps Bay Cape Town, St. Barts and Bondi Beach are among his favorite beaches in the world. As for his favorite location in the world to shoot? South Africa. “I can’t get enough of this country. The geographical terrain is so beautiful, from its stunning beaches to luscious wine country to the arid Sabi Sands. It’s a photographer’s dream as there are endless moments to capture,” he says. Gray’s most recent travels took him to Bora Bora, and he’s photographed a litany of other exotic locales. But his most memorable photographs to date were taken in Palm Springs, California at one of his favorite hotels: the Parker. According to

Gray, during the first night he spent at the boutique hotel, he found a burst of creative inspiration. “I immediately began imagining this series with its incredible cast of magical characters, including the Giraffe Lifeguard, a Lion in his paper crown, a Camel porter, or the Tiger lounging at the spa. The fact that I've been able to make this idea a reality, not once but twice, is almost as surreal as the series itself!” The second Gray Malin installment at the Parker Palm Springs is one of his favorites to date. Fortunately for fans of Gray’s, he has released his first monograph, titled Beaches, which features never-before-seen images captured in more than twenty cities around the world. Beaches also incorporates photographs from his prized À la Plage collection—his largest aerial series. Flipping through the pages of the book, viewers will glean not only a glimpse of Gray’s adventurous lifestyle, but also a rare—and beautiful—view of the world. “I hope to make viewers feel joy!” says Gray of his work. “Whether it’s a photograph of somewhere they’ve been or somewhere they dream of going, I want people to stop, take a second look and then smile.”

GRAY’S TOP 3 FAVORITE PHOTOGRAPHERS: Slim Aarons, Gaston Ugalde and Massimo Vitali NATIVE KNOWLEDGE: Advice for aspiring photographers (or for those who are simply looking to improve their photography skills): “Follow your instincts and shoot what inspires you.”

WEIGHTING GA M E The Biggest Loser Comes to Palm Desert

WRITTEN BY: ANGELA HATCHER PHOTOGRAPHED BY: NOBLE ANDREWS

THE EXPER T

GINA HADDON Contestant on The Biggest Loser

Gina’s Guilty Pleasure: Chocolate Covered Strawberries

When NBC decided to bring the daring competitive reality show The Biggest Loser to primetime, reality TV took the leap from simply entertainment to a step-bystep episodic visual diary of the contestants’ hopes, dreams, commitment, frustrations and, ultimately, life-changing makeovers of the body, mind and spirit. This is a show about competition, but it also proves to be a show highlighting competitors cheering for each other, celebrating each other’s wins, and embracing the camaraderie that binds them together.

Then, I add one whole egg and 4 egg whites. I garnish with avocado and homemade salsa. I have one slice of gluten-free toast with real butter. Yes, real butter!

LET’S START WITH THE BIGGEST LOSER CONCEPT: The “five pillars of overall well-being” are fitness, nutrition, education, relaxation and close group camaraderie. The contestants go through a variety of hardcore physical activities and routines that impact their lives and their future habits. While the activities are definitely challenging, The Biggest Loser also brings positive energy and nutritional guidance to the table, promoting healthy lifestyle changes. The education program includes nutrition fundamentals, gaining an understanding of metabolism, the facts of weight loss and stress management. Moving on to relaxation, it is important to have down time to rejuvenate, enjoy spa treatments and also gain an understanding of the mental and emotional components of weight loss. The Biggest Loser is an international phenomenon. While other countries may have their own version of the show, the objective of the race is always the same: to see who is able to lose the most weight and win the cash prize. This may be the goal, but ultimately the biggest reward may be a brand new you. While staying at a Biggest Loser luxury resort destination, guests attend a variety of educational workshops, get set up with individualized programs and receive personalized training and guidance. The Biggest Loser is designed to show every contestant the benefits of staying healthy, especially when an unhealthy lifestyle seems to be an impossible obstacle. Having grown up in a suburb of Dallas, Texas, where big hair, big steaks and big football game devotees are the norm, Gina Haddon spent most of her school years as a football cheerleader. She eventually moved on to become a cheerleading coach, but once these activities were no longer part of her life, she settled comfortably into a sedentary lifestyle–or so she thought. Gina was mortified when she realized that she couldn’t fit into her work clothes, and that moment was a real wake up call for her. While staying at The Biggest Loser’s beautiful Malibu ranch, Gina Haddon weighed in at 242 pounds. She lost a total of 65 pounds and came in at a final 177 pounds. So how did she do it? 58 | LOCALE MAGAZINE

THE EXPERT:

Contestant Gina Haddon Q: What motivated you to take on this public challenge, knowing that millions of people would be watching your personal journey on TV? Gina Haddon: I was motivated to be on the show because I have always felt like I needed a rehab type of program. I was addicted to food the way an addict is addicted to drugs. I wanted to be taken out of my life, broken down, then built back up. A little like boot camp. I knew I needed to get away so that I was the only focus. I tend to get sidetracked with kids and work. Q: One of The Biggest Loser’s mottos is “Slow progress is better than no progress.” Facing a long journey ahead, how difficult was it for you to stay the course, and were you ever tempted to give up? GH: I have to say being on the ranch was the easy part. When you go home—that is when your real challenge begins. The minute I got to the airport to come home, I had temptation all around me. I decided in that moment that I was going to stay the course and not eat the fast food at the airport. I feel incredible when I eat clean and it’s a natural high to be on. When I got home, my husband had lost 20 pounds. He had made changes at home and gave me a supportive environment to come home to. He has been my cheerleader along with my children.

Q: How do you stay motivated now that the cameras are no longer following you? GH: Motivation has a different meaning to me now. I used to think it was to look good in jeans or fit into a new outfit. Now, motivation is setting a goal that I am a little fearful of and then chipping away at any doubt by training for that race. I am currently working on doing a GoRuck Challenge [a 12-hour, 1520 mile guided city tour in which participants solve puzzles] with my girls at Crossfit. I am petrified to do this but I am doing it! I also have some very inspiring people around me at the gym. I watch them and know that one day I will do what they are doing. I believe it and that is my motivation. Q: Now that you have undergone a radical transformation and reached your weight goal, do you have a favorite new recipe or food that you enjoy? What is your guilty pleasure? GH: To stay the course, I keep it simple. I try to remember the “eat to live” motto. For me, too much variety leads to temptation. I will say The Biggest Loser Resort has excellent food and I am going to take the recipes home and try to replicate them. My favorite food that I eat everyday is a veggie omelette. I fry onion, bell pepper, asparagus and broccoli in a pan with coconut oil.

Q: What was the most difficult physical challenge that you had to face on the show and when did you start believing that you could do it? GH: The most difficult physical challenge I faced on the show was the challenge where we had to pull ourselves across a zip line while harnessed in. We had to pull ourselves across a football field. I cried the whole time because I feared letting my team down. When I was about halfway across, I wanted to stop, but I had Damien on one side, Lori Mac and Jackie Pierson on the other cheering me on. This was the first time I had ever been on that side of the fence before—I have always been the cheerleader. The sound of their voices and the words of encouragement they were shouting kept me going. Every single muscle in my body was on fire, but I tuned it out and tuned them in. All I heard the last five minutes was, “Come on baby; come on Gina, I got ya, reach out and I’ll bring you in.” Then out comes the huge hand of Damien Woody. He grabs me and pulls me to the finish line. We did not win that challenge, but at that very moment, I understood how important a team is. Q: What are a few of your favorite workout routines? GH: Three of my top workout routines are “WODs” that we do at Crossfit. I love workouts that go a little like this: 50-box jump burpees, 10 toes to bar, 10 lunges, 400 meter run, repeat. I also love to run marathons and spin or ride with my husband at the gym. There is only one exercise that I hate with a passion, and the winner is wall balls. Look them up, try them, then hate them with me! Q: What do you consider to be the most important thing you learned and how do you implement that into your life now that you are back home? GH: The two most important things I learned while on the show would have to be: 1. Get out of your own way. It sounds so simple, but it took me a year to figure it out. 2. Get comfortable with being uncomfortable. I was the one in the way most of the time. I blocked myself from opportunities due to my self-doubt. I was listening to myself instead of talking to myself. Today, I tell myself how strong and capable I am.

“The daily progress of my dedicated students and participants is the essence of what keeps me motivated.”—Kathy Orlando

LUXE LIVING J.W. Marriott has partnered with The Biggest Loser Resort offering state-of-the-art amenities, gorgeous swimming pools, an award winning tennis program and one of the most luxurious spas and wellness programs on the West Coast in beautiful Palm Desert. THE BIGGEST LOSER FUN FACTS The heaviest contestant was Kevin Moore in Australia who weighed in at 562 lbs in Season 9. Season 11’s Moses Kinikini lost 41 lbs in a single week! Bob Harper has been on every single season! A REAL CALORIE BURNER Cardio kickboxing is a variant of kickboxing, and the basic difference is the size of the movements and the option to use weights while punching and kicking. In cardio kickboxing, large, exaggerated movements bring big results. Some basic guidelines are: 1. Never punch or kick to full extension. 2. Stay on the balls of your feet and keep shifting your weight from leg to leg. 3. Keep your core tight. Q: Have you always been active and health conscious? How did you first become a trainer and coach? Kathy Orlando: Yes. I wanted to become a dancer from a very young age. I have always been involved in movement, physical fitness and high energy activities. The transition came about when I performed in exercise videos for fitness icons. I was asked by one of them to instruct at a local gym in Pacific Palisades. This is where I got my start as an instructor.

CORPORATE TRAINER AND PROGRAM DIRECTOR, Kathy Orlando

Q: Having seen you in action at the resort, it is easy to understand how you inspire and motivate others to keep going and focus on their goals, but what keeps you motivated? KO: I have always had fitness mentors. I am motivated by my current teachers who are icons in the industry. They include Louis van Amstel from Dancing with the Stars, Karen Voight—a founder of fitness in the Los Angeles area—as well as Kendell Hogan, who was the host of a daily exercise program and currently the regional manager of Crunch Fitness. But, most importantly, the daily progress of my dedicated students and participants is the essence of what keeps me motivated. Q: What are the best workouts to get in shape for your spring and summer beach body? KO: This has to be a challenging workout. Your

body will not change without increasing the body temperature. There are numerous workouts to choose from, such as cardio kickboxing, indoor cycling with hand weights, dance fusion. The key is to push the body. Q: For the best results, how often should you hit the gym? KO: Since The Biggest Loser Resort promotes movement on a daily basis, whether in a gym or an outdoor setting, I encourage 5-6 times per week. Q: Name three top workout routines that will bring the best results and include step by step instructions. What parts of the body are they working? KO: 1. Cardio kickboxing with weights, using punches and kicks with and without weights. 2. Cycle sculpt—for sculpting and toning while improving stamina and endurance. 3. Using cardio machines, such as treadmills and ellipticals, with strength equipment in intervals. All three of these incorporate the entire body from head to toe. These have all proven to be very successful.

THE MAN ON A MISSION: Bob Harper Q: What’s your workout routine? Bob Harper: My workout routine consists of Crossfit pretty much exclusively. I have found that it is the best workout for me. It is constantly varied with so many different elements that require physical strength, coordination, agility and metabolic conditioning. I’m obsessed! Q: How important are diet and exercise in relation to each other? Which one should people focus on more? BH: Well, I used to think that it was all about what you do in the gym, but the truth of the matter is that nutrition is the number one factor to getting the body you want. Start working out in the grocery store and your kitchen first and foremost. Q: Best foods to eat for your health? BH: I pretty much eat plenty of vegetables, good fats and a good source of farm-raised and organic proteins. I’m not as protein obsessed as a lot of my peers. Q: Worst foods to eat for your health? BH: Sugar is the devil! And artificial sweeteners. Stay away from them at all costs. Q: What should someone’s daily workout routine be if they want to stay fit but not join a gym? BH: Well, that’s a tough one because gyms are so well-equipped. I would say that there are many great workout DVDs out there (including mine) that you can do in the privacy of your own home. Q: What’s the number one mistake when diving into a diet and exercise regimen? BH: Changing everything at once. It is a recipe for disaster. Start with one goal for 30 days and build from there. Q: How does hosting change your perspective on weight loss in America? BH: My perspective has not changed. I know that Americans need help with their diets desperately. We need to go back to eating whole foods again and doing our best to stay away from fast food at all costs. I realize that it is easier said than done.

Oh, Coachella.

The time of year when every decision feels so right in the moment—but we come to regret it two days later. Whether you over-imbibed or got too much sun, DR. NICOLE ORTIZ, ND, co-founder of Live Well Clinic Holistic Solutions for Wellness and Aging, can help you make a full post-festival recovery. Q: What are some symptoms of post-festival fatigue? Nicole Ortiz: Dehydration, lack of sleep, heat exhaustion and excessive inhaled dust create the perfect storm to return back home post festival with a vengeful cold. It's tough to fight off illness when your body has been rockin' hard for several days in a row. Most festival goers do not perceive "stress" on their body given that they are experiencing an incredible weekend of music and art. While the stress of their jobs may be long forgotten, the body burden of excess alcohol, too little water, long hours of dancing and mornings in the sun by the pool takes a toll. Q: We hear alcohol and hot weather aren’t the best combination. Is that correct? NO: The desert is deceivingly warm in April and most festival attendees coming from out of town do not realize the amount of water and sodium that leaves their body through sweat. Combine heat with the open air and wind and the loss of fluids intensifies. Most would agree, Coachella is a little more fun with several drinks in hand, most of which are not water. Alcohol all day and night and the double shot of espresso that help the festival goers wake up after a night of partying is the perfect dehydration insult. Q: How can people recover from a huge festival like Coachella? NO: Get extra sleep, rehydrate, keep protected from long sun exposure. The desert depletes your sodium stores, so have a little sea salt and electrolytes in your water. I also suggest taking extra B and C vitamins, along with natural anti-inflammatory herb like curcumin and antioxidant coQ10. Q: What services do you offer that work to help heal the body after Coachella? NO: As preventative focused doctors at Live Well Clinic, we support festival goers the weeks before, during and after the festival. Typically, the week before the festival we have specials for vitamin B injections, and immune and energy support herbal elixirs to take to support your body for a long party weekend. We also give pre and post “hangover helper” supplements to purchase such as the one's listed above. The mix of anti-inflammatory and liver loving vitamins will help you avoid getting sick or feeling hungover. In the highest demand are the rehydration and nutrient IVs we administer to ensure an immediate boost of support before or during the festival. The favorites are Flu Fighter, Gochella Juice and Hangover Helper. You should arrange your IV in advance if you plan to take advantage of IV therapy. Q: Do you have any favorite products when it comes to postCoachella healing? NO: Live Well’s Herbal Immune Boost Elixer Tincture, B complex, vitamin C, zinc throat lozenges and electrolyte infused water.

ROBERT MARTIN Tribal Chairman

First In Line: Morongo is the first casino operated by Native American Indians

ut where the desert landscape basks in the glow of spectacular sunrises and sunsets over the San Gorgonio and San Jacinto Mountains, you can hear the winds roaring with laughter from the Morongo Casino Resort & Spa. The Morongo Band of Mission Indians have been living in this magical land for more than 5,000 years, when the area was a large water bed fed by the Colorado River. In 1876, when U.S. President Grant set aside reservation property to relocate thousands of Native American Indians, the Morongo Band of Mission Indians were permitted to remain on their birthright land. In 2004, they would become leaders in tourism development here, with the opening of the Morongo Casino Resort & Spa on reservation land. The Morongo benchmark would transform the lives of Native Americans across the country, putting their tribes on the path to success and self-reliance.

THE PEACE LOVING TRIBE HAS ALWAYS BEEN A NATURAL FIT FOR THE TERRAIN. Despite the harsh landscape, they learned how to evolve successfully with the times and advance their quality of life due to their ability to tap into the natural (and man-made) resources available. Morongo Casino Resort & Spa is the first premier gaming vacation resort operated by Native American Indians and has flourished into a multi-entertainment destination with a bowling alley, spa amenities and the first In-N-Out Burger restaurant to open in a casino. Chairman Robert Martin, head of the Morongo tribal government, who became the first elected tribal chairman at age 32, remembers their turning point well when the landmark 1987 U.S. Supreme Court victory confirmed the sovereignty of Indian tribes and their right to establish gaming operations. A visionary, Martin worked on its passage and the development of his tribe's original resort and casino. Then in 2004, he spearheaded the development of the $250-million casino, resort and spa complex in Cabazon, adjacent to Highway 10. 86 | LOCALE MAGAZINE

Can you describe the land and how it has evolved over your lifetime? Robert Martin: I remember vast expanses of chaparral and fields of poppies. Pines and streams with running water. There were ranches with cattle and orchards that grew peaches and almonds groves. Around the late ’50s, agriculture fell off and many jobs were lost, especially in the construction industries. There were hard times on the reservation because it was economically depressed. But, we are a very spiritual tribe and believe in self-reliance. Q: Why did you choose gambling as an economic solution for the economically depressed Morongo Band of Mission Indians? RM: We knew we needed to create jobs to create a better life for our people. It is hard to make a living on most reservation lands. Most of it is undesirable real estate. There was a small casino operating on our reservation as early as 1983 and it did quite well, but its revenues were managed by one individual and not shared with the tribe—which is not how we function in a tribe. In 1987, when the U.S. Supreme Court approved the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act—providing a legislative basis for the operation and regulation of Indian gaming and serving to protect gaming as a means of generating revenue for the tribes—it encouraged us to lead in the economic development for all Native American Indians. With the passage of the act, we were able to realize our dream of selfreliance and self-determination. Q: Did you encounter any opposition after its passage? RM: No, we were able to move pretty quickly. Everything we do is done by consensus with the other tribes. There was only one tribe,

ALL IN THE CARDS Gaming has always been a part of Indian culture in archery competitions and rice, dice and shell games. SCHOOL TIES Chairman Martin is deeply committed to developing the next generation of tribal leaders and helped to establish a tuitionfree, preparatory academy on the Morongo Reservation, making it the first of its kind in the nation.

hen you think of the perfect golf course, the Coachella Valley likely comes to mind. The desert basin seems an unlikely location for over 100 golf courses, but the valley’s golf industry is

The valley’s very own La Quinta is well recognized as the golf capital of the world.

Designed by American professional golfer Arnold Palmer, and opened in 2005, the 200-acre SilverRock Resort offers a 7,578-yard course that runs through a lush landscape of natural rock formations, water features and over 50-acres of native shrubs and plants. The immaculate course offers numerous opportunities and amenities for golfers to get their tee on. Golfers can rent a cart equipped with a GPS system that operates from a color, animated television monitor. The GPS system offers such a convenience by alerting golfers to key mechanics of the course such as the layout of the hole, location of the bunkers and lakes, and where the pin is on the green. If you haven’t the time or the cash to spend four or five hours on an 18-hole round of golf, consider the resort’s Walk the Rock program. The program promotes walking, so although a cart is not included, you’ll get a 9-hole program that begins just two hours before sunset. This one is optimal for families. If you’re looking for lessons, golf instruction is available on a walk-in basis or by booking in advance. After a lesson or two, golfers may break in their spiked or spikeless shoes with the resort’s offered seven sets of tees. Lessons and amenities aside, one might wonder how a lush, green golf course in a man-made desert oasis is surviving the California drought. Unlike many golf courses, SilverRock resort does not rely on well water. The course is instead irrigated with water from the Colorado River. In addition to non-reliance on well water, SilverRock has state of the art weather stations that communicate with their pump stations. The weather station identifies how much water the course does or does not need on a daily basis, creating a highly efficient water system. As for the future of SilverRock resort, a $420 million dollar project is in the works this year. Golfers can expect massive expansion with the inclusion of a 140room, 5-star quality luxury hotel and spa in addition, the resort will offer 150,000 square feet of resort residential units, the renovation of the Ahmanson Ranch House Facility and 5,000 square feet of temperature controlled space consisting of outdoor patios and an event lawn.

TEE UP, WIND DOWN

> The on-site SilverRock Grill is a relaxing spot for all-day breakfast or lunch. Guests feast on fish tacos, a wide assortment of salads, Kobe beef burgers and panini sandwiches.

PICK YOUR TEE TIME!

> During the months of daylight savings, the resort will see an upwards of 300 golfers per day.

SOUND AND VISION

Joshua Tree Music Festival is an event that takes place in the area surrounding the Integratron every spring and fall, and comes highly recommended.

Located in Landers, California, about 20 miles north of Joshua Tree National Park, is a dome shaped structure that seems as if it were taken straight out of a science fiction movie. This other-worldly structure is actually Integratron, a resonant tabernacle and energy machine located on top of a powerful geometric vortex in the Mojave Desert. The unique geometry of the building amplifies the Earth’s magnetic field, allowing the wooden dome to be used as a mechanism for rejuvenation and, according to the designer, time travel. These astounding abilities are made possible through the generation of strong intermittent magnetic fields, which resonate within the human body and recharge the cellular structure. 94 | LOCALE MAGAZINE

The Integratron was designed by aeronautical engineer and leader in the UFO movement George Van Tassel. Inspired by instructions provided by visitors from Venus, Tassel saw the potential in the Integratron and so did others, who helped fund the project through donations. After Van Tassel’s death in 1978, the building had several owners before finally being purchased by sisters Joanne, Nancy and Patty Karl in the early 2000s. The sisters then opened the Integratron to the public and promoted it as an acoustically perfect structure. So what can you do with an acoustically perfect structure you ask? Simple. Carry on the theme of rejuvenation and

offer those who are feeling stressed, or simply need a break from the real world, a chance to unwind and relax. Sound baths have become a popular way to utilize the Integratron’s special features. The design of the structure promotes deep relaxation and introspection through 60-minute sonic healing sessions. Roughly half an hour is devoted to relaxing to the sounds of crystal quartz singing bowls whose tones echo throughout the deeply resonant sound chamber. Each tone is tuned to the key energy centers—chakras—of the body, creating a sensation of peace and heightened awareness unlike anything you’ve ever felt before.

The Integratron also hosts events, including an ongoing “Sonic Geometry” experiment that the public is invited to participate in. Guests will be able to hear the full backstory of this unique structure before experiencing specific sets of electronic frequencies. After a light dinner, guests can end the event by hearing organic frequencies inside the Integratron’s sound chamber, followed by a recap of the day’s events before departure. Whether you’re a musician, yoga practitioner, stargazer, corporate group or simply are looking for an out-of-thisworld desert experience, the Integratron will not leave you disappointed.

BEST PLACES T O AT V I N G R E AT E R PA L M SPRINGS: The rugged and rocky terrain of the region makes the Greater Palm Springs area an ideal location for ATV’ing.

Pulling up to an eclectic graveyard of recycled art and funky signs, I’m surrounded by a landscape of white sand hills scattered with tires. Within minutes, I’m chatting with Steven Harris, the owner of Off Road Rentals—though if you ask him, he would deny most claims to the throne. A hippie type that spends half his time in Mexico and the other half playing outdoors in the California sun, Harris is all about having a good time and having others join him. After realizing he wanted to spend his life sharing this sense of adventure with others, he opened up Off Road Rentals in 1984. A guy with spiky blonde hair, dark sunglasses and a Star Wars shirt rolls up. “Hey, I’m Matt! I only got stuck twice. I know that sounds kind of bad, I mean how hard can it be to drive over some sand? THE LIVING DESERT ZOO Reaches New Heights

little over a year ago, the Living Desert Zoo, located in the beautiful Palm Desert, introduced a brand new show that has wowed visitors ever since its January debut. The name of the game is Zoorasic Park and it features amazing animatronic dinosaurs that come to life during the 25-minute performance. The show is family friendly, interactive and even includes some activities that get the audience involved. After watching, and possibly being a part of the show, you’ll have a whole new take on dinosaurs, their lifestyle and how different life would be for all of us if they were still around. We dug in to find out the ins and outs of this amazing experience.

Let’s start by taking a look at the Living Desert Zoo, which has been around since 1970 and was built out of a love for the desert and with hopes of preservation in mind. Over the years their goal has been to run a place that believes in preserving the natural beauty of the desert and sharing it with all who wish to visit. The park now consists of 1,200 acres of land, with 1,000 of them being left in their natural state. Instead of rearranging nature, the board in charge of this wonderful place has created different trails and nature walks that lead you right through all of its beauty without disturbing the natural, unique order of things. Some of the features you will find and see on your visit include a walk-through aviary where you can discover the birds who live there and a desert oasis featuring a pupfish pond, plant nurseries, desert gardens, tons of carved out trails and more.

THE LIVING DESERT ZOO 47900 Portola Avenue Palm Desert, CA 92260 760.346.5694 www.livingdesert.org

Aside from preserving the natural elements of the desert, the Living Desert has expanded and grown over the years with new elements like camel rides, the butterfly pavilion and their own veterinary hospital. All of these have contributed to the success and vision of what this place is meant to be, and Zoorasic Park is no different. The people at the Living Desert didn’t hold back when putting together

this show, and for a minute, the dinosaurs will have you questioning whether or not you are back in prehistoric times. These creatures were brought to life by the creative minds of the Chiodo Brothers, who have been wowing Hollywood with their amazing work for years. These brothers are a group of special effects artists who hail from the Bronx but have Hollywood in their blood. Some of their work can be found in the classics that we all know and love such as Gremlins, Elf and Dinner For Shmucks. If you have seen any of their work, then it is easy to imagine how amazing and life-like these dinosaurs truly are. Access to this unique show comes included in the price of admission and you can catch one of two shows every day at either 10:30 a.m. or 1:00 p.m. The show’s goal is to get people to “rethink extinct” as they describe it, and open their eyes to the world of dinosaurs that, until now, we have only enjoyed in movies, stories, books and other fictional tools. After the show children get a chance to play archaeologist for a day by digging up fossils and will also have a chance for a photo with their favorite dinos. Don’t miss your chance to discover why this exhibit and the Living Desert Zoo are so special and unlike anything else around!

he only thing more vibrant than Dann Foley’s design aesthetic is the man himself. His design style is colorful and eclectic and he has worked with a variety of clients on homes throughout North America and the world. His home base of Palm Springs provides him with inspiration and serenity. We sat down with him to see what makes him thrive in California’s world-renowned little desert town and how the world of Dann Foley is taking on the world of design. To give a sense of his reach and scope, Dann Foley is simultaneously working on television projects, home product lines, speaking engagements, books and is still working with clients nationwide. He is innovative and hardworking, having recently finished a home in Charleston while managing projects in California and Chicago. Once people work with Dann, they come back for more.

“My house is designed to tell a story about my life.” —DANN FOLEY

“I love coming home, when you come out of the plane at the airport, you are actually outdoors and you can see straight towards the mountains. It is the most comforting sight I have every time I fly home.” —DANN FOLEY

Q: How did you get into the interior design business? Dann Foley: I went to school for design—I have always wanted to do this. I ended up in this business by plan. I started my firm as an extra credit project in school and the business just started growing. Q: Who and what inspires your work? DF: It really comes from everywhere. Everywhere I go and places I see. I travel a lot with clients and it has become a great source of inspiration. I draw a lot of inspiration from classic movies; I am crazy about classic films. Movies are the perfect source of creativity; you can be anything. Whether you want to live in a palace or a log cabin, it’s in film. Q: How do you describe your aesthetic? DF: I am best known for what is truly an eclectic look; it’s really a transitional feel. I like a mix of new and old, modern, contemporary with classic and antique. What makes me unique is that I really get into my client’s lives—I want my work to speak to their true taste and personality. Design must be based on their needs and desires. I am also known for my use of color and pattern. Everyone is afraid of color—but I ease people into it and layer it on! In this world of homogenized retail, color is one of the few places we have left as consumers to make a statement about who we are. It’s just paint! Q: When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up? DF: Always design! I used to re-arrange the furniture in the

106 | LOCALE MAGAZINE

house when my parents were out for dinner; I experimented in my home! Now I experiment in my own homes, which my parents probably prefer! Q: Tell me about American Dream Builders. DF: It was the first design and renovation show done in prime time on network television. I had been made offers for other shows but this was an opportunity like none before! We were given so much product and resources, more than had been seen before, which was a great draw for me; we were given budgets and resources that made it exciting. These reality shows are filmed typically in 6-8 weeks but this show took four months to film and we worked up to 20 hours a day and six days a week—you only went home when you were eliminated! I was in all but one episode. It was a very interesting and fun experience, but exhausting! I believe I went into it with the right attitude, I had already done television and I knew if I was going to make a statement or name for myself it was up to me! I had to be prepared to use my time on the show to my own advantage. Q: Do you enjoy being on television? How does it compare to your other roles? DF: What I like about television is the amount of people I can reach with my design story and aesthetic. I have a large reach as it is with my brand, so I do a number of appearances with my product, which lets me meet buyers, designers and creators. It is not unusual for me to stand in front of a crowd speaking about design, and I really enjoy it no matter the format! Q: Where do you like to go out in Palm Springs? DF: This is a resort town—every place is a bar, a lounge and a restaurant. Just depends on the time of day you go! One of my favorites would have to be Eight4Nine Restaurant & Lounge, it’s one of the newest places in town. Birba is another favorite: it’s all outdoors and behind a hedge. They have an artisan menu with

handmade pizzas and salads. This is a place to see and be seen, but is a fun place to relax under the stars. Q: Tell me about your home in Palm Springs, what is your favorite room? DF: I would say my favorite room to design is always a living space. I have lived in condos, townhouses and homes. I have designed modern homes, Spanish homes and contemporary homes— among others. Now I am in a Mediterranean home but my own style and look is what I love to do best. My house is designed to tell a story about my life. But in this house my favorite room to be in is my bedroom—I like a big bedroom and when I don’t have to leave my house I love to stay in there. If I had a kitchen in there I would never have to leave! Something else I love about the house is that every room has access to the outdoors—this is Palm Springs!

FILM BUFF:

Q: Why do you stay based in Palm Springs? DF: Palm Springs is known all over the world—but if you’ve never been here people don’t realize what a small town it is! In LA, the joy of Southern California has been sucked out by the traffic! We don’t have the same issues here. Also, it may sound new age, but the mountains have energy of their own—they draw you in. It’s the truth! I love coming home, when you come out of the plane at the airport, you are actually outdoors and you can see straight towards the mountains. It is the most comforting sight I have every time I fly home. I also work out a great deal—everyday I am outside working out by 6 a.m., whether it is yoga, biking, hiking or running. I look at those mountains and say, my God I am lucky. I travel to fabulous places but come back to this world-renowned small town. Q: Any upcoming news? DF: I am constantly launching new product, check it out online and in fine retailers! Beyond that, television wise … I’ll just leave it at—stay tuned!

“It is not unusual for me to stand in front of a crowd speaking about design, and I really enjoy it no matter the format!” —DANN FOLEY

Dann is currently writing a book about how film has influenced his design. Specifically focused on a set designer who was with MGM for over 30 years! “So much of design is directly rooted in old films, from the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s. The influence is present today in new design!” says Dann.

HIGH SOCIETY: Dann was the keynote speaker and MC for the Interior Design Society’s 2016 Black Tie Gala held in Dallas, Texas.

I LOVE ROAD TRIPS.

Six months prior to our scheduled European vacation, my fiancée Erin and I met with Lorna Farthing at Fletcher Jones Mercedes-Benz in Newport Beach. Lorna was a sales consultant specializing in European Delivery for Mercedes-Benz. We spent the day test driving vehicles, deciding on the model and, finally,

choosing a color. We decided on an elegant 2016 E400A convertible in Polar White with a contrasting black top. A few days later, Lorna emailed us to confirm our order, providing us with the exact date we would be able to pick up our new MercedesBenz at the factory in Germany. We were officially going to Europe.

More accurately, I love the idea of road trips—plotting my course on Google Maps, making road trip-worthy playlists and grabbing gas station-sized, kidneystraining mega sodas. But actually driving? Not always fun. The leg cramps, long stretches of seemingly endless road, the constant dread of being pulled over for speeding. This summer, however, I found a solution to road trip boredom: Drive an exciting car on roads without speed limits while enlisting your best friend (and fiancée) as navigator, storyteller, co-driver and Snack Commander in Chief. This time, the journey could be just as thrilling as reaching our destination.

CAUTION, SPEED DEMONS: There are photo radar cameras everywhere; drive within the posted limits.

Zooming down roads in a car reminiscent of a soup can, traversing mile-long tunnels crowded with commercial trucks and ascending steep mountain roads was actually a blast. Part of the excitement came from reading every German sign aloud (the signs for Exit, or Ausfahrt, truly brought out the inner child in both of us). On top of a couple near-death experiences, we had our picture taken five times during that first day of driving. The camera really loves you while speeding, running a red light, changing lanes—even when seemingly abiding by the law! Please be aware of photo radar; it can increase your vacation costs significantly. We could have spent our entire trip in Zurich. Beautiful buildings line the waterfront promenade of the Limmat River, which dissects the city on its journey toward Lake Zurich. We spent the afternoon walking along the promenade, watching boaters row, swimmers swim and sunbathers enjoy the 90-degree sunshine and 80-degree, crystal-clear water. We rented a boat that afternoon, drove to the middle of the lake and skinny dipped.

“Venice is like eating an entire box of chocolate liqueurs in one go.” —Truman Capote The hotels and residences that line the canals of Venice were all once great mansions of the fabulously wealthy and important. Our hotel is no exception as it was built in 1892 to house the Genovese family. The Centurion Palace is directly on the main (and much wider) canal and boasts a gothic-Venetian façade. After parking the Mercedes-Benz in a nearby garage, our motoscafi, or water taxi, approached, circled once and dropped us at the hotel’s wooden dock. Although our hotel possesses a very traditional outward appearance, the interior is anything but old fashioned. The hotel has been transformed from a historic residence into a very contemporary hotel, each room decorated differently. We dropped our bags in our third-floor room and took in the views before heading out to traverse Venice.

HOTEL: J.K. Place, Firenze

The drive from Venice to Florence was gorgeous—the Tuscan region is beautiful. Those who love rolling fields and farm houses will really enjoy this drive. We originally planned for two days in Florence, but after the long drive from Venice and the feeling the city gave us, we cancelled our drive to Rome to extend our stay in Florence. Our hotel was part of

the reason we extended our stay. Although our room was small, it was immaculately clean and impeccably decorated. It was simple yet sophisticated. Even though Florence boasts a large number of worldrenowned restaurants, we found ourselves having three meals at the hotel during our stay (once for dinner and twice for a family style breakfast around a communal dining table in the lounge).

Make sure to carry plenty of different credit cards and cash in different currencies. We lost count at over 40 toll road stops on our trip and there were several times that we had to play credit card roulette to find a card the machine would accept.

WHAT DID WE LOVE ABOUT FLORENCE? 1. The bridges over the Arno River: Ponte Vecchio, Ponte Santa Trinita and Ponte alla Grazie—in that order 2. The guided tour of the Duomo 3. Outdoor movies at Cinema Chiardiluna 4. The food—especially at Alla Vecchia Bettola 5. Making friends: We met a local nicknamed “Little Tony” who gave us a free tour of his city 6. The warm nights 7. Portofino: It still feels like a dream. We stayed the night in a town that felt like a movie set. We met Magic Johnson and Samuel L. We arrived at The Grand Hotel Central, located in the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona. Our faces were tan, our legs ached and we needed a drink. After helping us contact The Fairmont in Monaco to retrieve our passports, the hotel staff showed us to our room and told us about the rooftop infinity pool and bar. Our room was modern, clean and larger than we expected with amenities like an in-room Nespresso machine and a massive shower. We also had a view of the Barcelona Cathedral from our windows. The Finish Line

MILES/KM: 1,037 km/644 miles HOTEL: Hôtel Maison Souquet We were supposed to take two days to drive from Barcelona to Paris, stopping for a night in Bordeaux, before continuing our journey. From the minute we exited the city limits of Barcelona, it was obvious my fiancée had other plans. The drive should have taken 13 hours—she was determined to make it in 11. She hovered near the 200km/hour marker for hours, guiding us at Nascar speeds through the winding hills of Southern France, over bridges and through woods. We stopped only four times for gas and food before arriving in Paris. Driving in Paris was an adventure in itself. We nearly ran down a motorcyclist in a roundabout. We arrived at our hotel late at night and the concierge was beyond helpful. The Hôtel Maison Souquet is dark and cozy with hints of secret passageways amid the narrow hallways. Once a pleasure house during the Belle Époque era, the hotel has been transformed to emulate the gaudy opulence of that golden age in Western European history, but in a tasteful way. Rich fabrics, dark tones and quiet spaces make every conversation seem like a secret. We were offered cocktails in the lounge, which we accepted before retiring to our room for the night. The room, though small, would better be described as intimate. There was only one small window and the walls were padded with thick material. It was like sleeping inside a jewelry box.

“Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum and Tiki Culture go hand in hand. And, let’s face it, you can’t have a tropical cocktail without great rum!” Ashley went on to artfully articulate the history of the Sailor Jerry brand, which pays homage to the famed tattoo artist Norman Collins. Rum. The cult following is not what made the rum so popular, however. Year after year, the rum has proven itself in the industry by being a heavily-awarded spirit, winning an arsenal of prestigious accolades, such as the 2015 Rum Master’s Gold medal (which it also won in 2013 and 2014). “I’m not here to sell, my role is to educate, amplify, and enhance the brand. Today we’re celebrating with classic mid-century cocktails,” said Ashley. Of course we are. She proceeded to present three crowd-pleasing libations which were hand-picked as being the three best from some of the top Tiki Bars in Palm Springs. The heavenly cocktails were also being served that evening for the muchanticipated Shag Party taking place at the house, which is precisely why they had chosen this vacation rental. It’s a righteous setting for a celebration to honor Shag, also known as Josh Agle, a modernist artist whose work has a very fitting midcentury feel. Did your invitation get lost in the mail?
