EDI T O R My family is busy. So busy that I look forward to the last day of school more than most holidays! No more making lunches, waking up or going to bed early - and no more weekly schedule. Summer is our favorite - and we like it to be as lazy as possible! Lazy hikes to Pocono peaks, lazy days grilling and chilling in the backyard and lazy nights talking around a fire after a day spent exploring. A slow Pocono summer works magic for healing the soul and restoring peace of mind. This summer is chock-full of family fun events throughout the Poconos. Head over to The Pocono Garden Club’s annual Plant Show and Sale on July 14th. A portion of the proceeds benefit The Garden of Giving, which supplies healthy food to those in need within our community. Of course, fireworks galore will light up the sky for Independence Day. Our favorite start at dusk on July 3rd at Shawnee Mountain. Enjoy the show, music, food and other activities for $10 a carload. The Pocono Mountains Music Festival has a world-class lineup from July 27th through August 4th at various locations including East Stroudsburg University, Pocono Mountain School District and Buck Hill Falls. Make sure to get your tickets online at PoconoFest.org. Downtown Stroudsburg is hosting Ladies Night on June 21st and the first Arts Festival on July 7th. Stroudsburg is coming alive with wonderful wineries, restaurants and eclectic galleries and shops to explore. So, grab your friends, family and head down to one of their great events this summer. They accomplish these goals through monthly programs and awarding scholarships to the Monroe County Conservation District, Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm, and by contributing to various other local organizations. Their community service includes the maintenance of the Hughes Library Garden and the Judy Holtz Memorial Butterfly Garden at Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center.

The club’s major fundraiser is the Annual Flower Show and Plant Sale. It provides scholarships for educational activities and regional programs which promote the study of gardening, floral arts, conservation of the forests and native environments. “This year we will be in a new location,” said Peg Zukawski, Show Chairperson, “the Pocono Building at the Northampton Community College in Tannersville is a really beautiful space and the plants will show wonderfully there.” The show is July 14th from 10 a.m to 4 p.m. Adult admission is $4 and children are free. A portion of the proceeds will go to The Garden of Giving, a local nonprofit whose mission is to provide low-income families with access to nutritional foods. In addition to this year’s program; “Creating a Butterfly Garden with Sharon Carey,” show attendees will also enjoy a bake sale, tricky-tray and a marketplace. This year, plant enthusiasts can look forward to an extended variety of plants for sale, including deer resistant, native perrenials, butterfly pollinators and more.
“The Pocono Garden Club began in 1936 when a group of ladies from Scotrun decided to form their own club after a visit to the Bushkill Garden Club,” explained Lucy Auger, President of The Club, “the first meeting was held with fourteen members. Officers were elected and the Pocono Garden Club was organized.” Meetings were held in the members’ homes for 10 years. When the firehouse was built in Tannersville in 1949, that became the new meeting place for the next 47 years. The meeting date was the second Tuesday of every month, as it continues today. Now, The Pocono Garden Club meets every month at the Monroe County Environmental Education Center in Bartonsville. The meetings offer informative programs, bus trips to interesting and informative botanical gardens and

Paint a Circle the art of SHary Maloney By Kevin Conroy
A talented local artist comes around to her individual expressions “Paint a circle.” Her years as an Army Sergeant in post-Cold War Germany did not prepare her for this moment. After all the not knowing, the confused trying, Shary Maloney knew with those words that she would paint. Shary left the California Bay Area to settle with husband Kyle in Pennsylvania after seeing the beauty of the Pocono hills covered in a halo of snow. She became a mother, and when her son was old enough bought art supplies and tried to paint, with no idea how or where to begin. At a painting class, host artist Anna Kazupski suggested Shary paint a circle, words that took on a spirit of their own to echo through her life. In her first year of painting, a change began to take shape in the way she saw things: Shary began to focus less on scenery and animals and create with layers of color and texture, compassing her panels with accumulated gesso and acrylic colors. Today, Shary’s art begins with a vision that is revised again and again to bring out the color. We see this evolution in “Birches,” which displays her grasp of natural landscape and perspective through a palette of blue leaves and deep, red underbrush. “Heaven’s Glow II” is a riot of color and curved movement. Use of gold leaf is sometimes otherworldly, as in “Himalayan Night”, reflective material pierced through pigments may confuse viewers: these are some of the techniques that result in the moods and atmosphere of her work.

St. Luke’s opens State of the Art

St. Luke’s University Health Network opened its second diagnostic breast imaging facility, specifically designed to serve Monroe County and surrounding area patients in need of screening and diagnostic mammograms or advanced breast imaging. The new St. Luke’s Regional Breast Center-Monroe – located at 200 St. Luke’s Lane in Stroudsburg – is a state-of-the-art facility, modeled in function and design after the highly successful St. Luke’s Regional Breast Center in Center Valley. Every detail of this new facility, whose creation was driven by overwhelming demand at St. Luke’s Women’s Imaging in E. Stroudsburg, is structured to be patient-driven and patient-focused with tranquility at the forefront of the design. From the latest breast health technology to the warm colors of the waiting room and the fireplace and coffee bar, every amenity was constructed with patient comfort and ease in mind. “We are committed to doing everything we can to reduce a patient’s anxiety and that influenced each decision regarding the overall concept, patient flow and physical design,” says Michele Giletto, St. Luke’s network director, women’s imaging. “Knowing that most patients have anxiety about getting their mammograms because of the possibility of having breast cancer, we wanted to focus on patient comfort and care by providing a warm, welcoming atmosphere for patients and accurate and thorough evaluations with less wait time.” The Regional Breast Center includes breast imaging technologies from GE Healthcare, including its latest mammography system, Senographe Pristina, and Pristina Dueta, an industry-first, patientassisted compression remote control device that gives women the ability to control their own breast compression during a mammogram with the help of a technologist. St. Luke’s is the first healthcare provider in Pennsylvania to offer this patient-assisted compression device. Several of the nation’s top academic medical centers have recently adopted the Senographe Pristina mammography system that is now available at the Regional Breast Center. Developed by a team of women at GE Healthcare, the system is designed to provide a more comfortable patient experience with rounded corners, a thinner image detector made of carbon fiber composite that is softer and warmer to the touch than the material used on traditional systems and armrests so women can lean comfortably and relax their muscles to simplify positioning, compression and image acquisition. Patients can also choose to use Pristina Dueta, which helps to minimize the perceived pain and discomfort often associated with a mammogram.1 After the breast is properly positioned by the technologist, the patient uses a handheld, wireless remote control to adjust the compression based on her individual comfort level. Patients who use the remote control tend to be more relaxed and have found it improves the comfort of the exam.1
Danielle Dupuis and her husband, Roland, donated a grant to St. Luke’s in order to purchase the Senographe Pristina with Dueta. “I was very excited to help obtain this new equipment that will make the whole mammography experience as patient-friendly as possible and soothe anxious patients concerned about the discomfort of mammograms,” says Danielle. “We’re excited to help St. Luke’s bring this revolutionary technology to the Monroe County community.” The Center also features GE Healthcare’s SensorySuite, a spa-like exam room designed to create a more pleasant atmosphere for patients by allowing them to choose sounds, scents and imagery to experience during their mammograms, such as seascapes, gardens or waterfalls, which can help reduce anxiety, discomfort and pain during the exam. St. Luke’s Regional Breast Center - Monroe provides women’s imaging services including: • Lowest dose 3D screening and diagnostic mammography • Automated breast ultrasound (ABUS) • Diagnostic breast ultrasound • Stereotactic breast biopsy • Ultrasound-guided breast biopsy and cyst aspirations The Center is staffed by highly skilled technologists and fellowship-trained breast imagers as well as a certified breast nurse navigator to provide education and support throughout diagnostic exams, and if needed, breast biopsy and diagnosis. “The concept of this facility reemphasizes St. Luke’s commitment to breast cancer screening and early detection. Because finding breast cancer early begins with proper screening, we make testing as easy and accessible as possible,” says Joseph Russo, MD, section chief of women’s imaging, St. Luke’s University Health Network. “With all of the stateof-the-art digital breast imaging and resources the Monroe facility has to offer, we provide the screening options that best address a patient’s individual risk factors, making early onset cancer most treatable and giving the patient the best possible outcome.”

It also means over-exposure to the sun - and just because we live in the mountains doesn’t mean we aren’t at risk of developing skin cancer. In fact, one out of five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime, shared Dr. Sanjiv Agarwala, M.D. Currently serving as Chief of Oncology and Hematology for St. Luke’s University Health Network, Dr. Agarwala filled us in on the risks, warning signs and preventive measures we can take to avoid skin cancer.

There are three main types of skin cancer. The most serious is melanoma. Like all body tissues our skin is made up of cells: basal cells, squamous cells and melanocytes. The different types of skin cancer are named for the skin cell where the cancer develops: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma. Basal and squamous cell skin cancers are most common and often found in areas exposed to the sun, such as the head, neck, and arms, but they also can occur elsewhere. They are very common but are also usually very treatable. Here you can find out all about these cancers, including risk factors, symptoms, how they are found, and how they are treated.
What makes a person susceptible to skin cancer? The risk of skin cancer is much higher for Caucasian individuals than for African Americans or Hispanics. This is because melanin, dark pigmentation, helps protect against UV radiation. The risk of basal and squamous cell skin cancers goes up as people age. Older people have been exposed to the sun for a longer time. Men are two times as likely as women to have basal cell cancers.
As a general rule, to spot either melanomas or nonmelanoma skin cancers (such as basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma), take note of any new moles or growths, and any existing growths that begin to grow or change significantly in any other way. Lesions that change, itch, bleed, or don’t heal are also alarm signals. It is so vital to catch melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, early. Know your ABCDE’s: A- Asymmetry If you draw a line through the middle of a mole and the two sides match, it is symmetrical and therefore, benign. If you draw a line through the mole and the two halves do not match, it means it is asymmetrical, a warning sign for melanoma. B-Border A benign mole has smooth, even borders, unlike melanomas. The borders of an early melanoma tend to be uneven. The edges may be scalloped or notched. C-Color Most benign moles are all one color — often a single shade of brown. Having a variety of colors is another warning signal. A number of different shades of brown, tan or black could appear. A melanoma may also become red, white or blue. D-Diameter Benign moles usually have a smaller diameter than malignant ones. Melanomas usually are larger in diameter than the eraser on your pencil tip (¼ inch or 6mm), but they may sometimes be smaller when first detected. E-Evolving Common, benign moles look the same over time. Be on the alert when a mole starts to evolve or change in any way. When a mole is evolving, see a doctor. Any change — in size, shape, color, elevation, or another trait, or any new symptom such as bleeding, itching or crusting — points to danger.
summer skin safety tips from dr. AGarwala • Seek the shade, especially between 10 AM and 4 PM. • Avoid tanning and UV tanning beds. • Avoid sunburn! Cover up with clothing, including a broad-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses. • Use a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher every day. For extended outdoor activity, use a water- resistant, broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. • Apply 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) of sunscreen to your entire body 30 minutes before going outside. Reapply every two hours or immediately after swimming or excessive sweating. • Keep newborns out of the sun. Sunscreens should be used on babies over the age of six months. • Examine your skin head-to-toe every month. • See your physician every year for a professional skin exam.

Sharing a memorable, lifetime experience with your children can start on the greens. Here are a few tips for fostering a love of golf with your little ones, so you can be sure to have a great time together: 1. Any course may allow children to play, but to ensure that you can have an enjoyable time together, find a course that is kid-friendly. Be sure learners on the greens are embraced kindly by the staff and that other players are patient and understanding. 2. Inquire about children’s tee and cart fees. Some golf courses charge different rates for children players or include cart fees if children are sharing the cart with a parent or caregiver, so be sure you pick a course that offers a fair price for kids who are just getting a feel for the game. 3. If your children are still new to the links, you may want to be sure that the course offers a Pro Shop with children’s rentals so you aren’t spending extra money on new equipment if the kids decide their interests have changed after a few months of play. 4. If the kids DO take to the game, you might consider a course that offers lessons so the kids will be familiar with the course staff. 5. Finally, have some special time together at a club that offers with variety. Real Estate Market Continues Healthy, But Demand Outpacing Supply As a recap from last issue, the real estate market (both national and local sales) has been on a very torrid pace. Nationally, the economy has been a large driver of appreciation along with a severe lack of inventory. The same scenario is playing out locally in both the Poconos and Lehigh Valley, with the addition of business expansion growing locally at a rapid pace. Interest rates, which are tied to the 10-year bond continued to stay consistent around the 4.5% rate, while the bond market held steady at the 2.8-2.9 rate. This is continued good news, eventhough it is an increase over a year ago - mortgage rates remain low comparatively.
keep prices on the increase. Nationally, the market increased in April by about 2% while locally, in Monroe County, it was up 5.9%. While this as still a nice increase for April on a moving annual total basis - it was far below March’s number of 28.1%. While one month is not enough to form concern yet, as I wrote in the last issue we are beginning to test our highs. It will be interesting as the summer season approaches to watch these numbers to see if a trend line develops or if it simply bounces around. In Northampton and Lehigh Counties (which are analyzed together), average home sale prices were up a strong 11.8% year over year for April.
The decrease in homes sold year over year in both the Poconos and Lehigh Valley continues. The Poconos Inventory level is down 6% and homes offered for sale are down 25.4%! In the Lehigh Valley the inventory situation is even worse with homes sold down 10.6% and homes offered for sale off by 33%. Exactly one third less homes being offered for sale in the past 12 months on an annual basis! This has made it difficult for buyers in the market to secure a home with multiple offers coming in on homes the first week they are listed for sale which is resulting in bidding wars. Today it is not unheard of in the area’s most desirable townships or school districts, for it to take someone two, three or even four tries to get the home of their dreams.
The last trend we will take a look at are Pending Home Sales, which tend to predict the coming couple of months closed sales. In Monroe County, these are up 13.9% which is agreat number considering new properties coming to market were down 7.2%. In the Lehigh VAlley, Pending Home Sales increased by 7.2% while the amount of new properties hitting the market decreased by 4.6%. In closing, all of these numbers continue to provide a fantastic opportunity to list and sell your home. SOHO in the Burg; Spring Opening at The Renegade Winery On Friday, May 11th, The SOHO in the BURG Gallery (within The Renegade Winery) in Stroudsburg, held an Artists’ Reception. On display were works from Jill and Jack Swersie, Shary Maloney, Anna Kuzupski, James Chesnick and the gallery’s curator, Andrea Robbins-Rimberg. Spring for the Arts at Stroudsmoor’s Woodgate Spring for the Arts 2018, the Pocono Arts Council’s biggest fundraising event of the year, and “A Night at the Kentucky Derby” was held on Friday, May 4 at Stroudsmoor’s Woodsgate. The council honored Jim Smeltz (posthumously) with the Lifetime Achievement Award. The Suzanne Anderson Rising Star Student Scholarships were awarded to Melissa Salvadeo (Stroudsburg High School) and Danielle Kunkle (Pocono Mountain East High School. Laura Goss, executive director of the Pocono Arts Council from 1992-2017, received special recognition by being honored with the Laura Goss Volunteer of the Year Award, which will be an ongoing award given each year to a member who goes above and beyond in their volunteer efforts to help the Pocono Arts Council. The event featured a Kentucky buffet with favorite southern foods and mint juleps; entertainment by East Stroudsburg High School North chorale directed by Keith LaBar and Eleve Dance Company directed by Deidre Sears; raffle fun; online auction activities;a hat parade, and special art exhibits in the Auradell Gallery, featuring artwork by Sherwood Samet and James Gloria with sales benefiting the arts council.
