It’s the Homestead Issue, and its timing is the ultimate irony. Our writers and photographers captured the deeply moving stories of three New Mexicans who have fully embraced the ethos of permaculture—a way of life that our writer Toner Mitchell describes as “care of the earth, care of people, and the idea of ‘fair share,’ the distribution of surplus benefits to earth and to people.” The essence and spirit of homesteading runs through the veins of the New Mexicans who came before us. It is very much alive in the generation that lives here now, and hopefully, it will be what sustains us in the future.
