LETTER
emember when we actually tore a page off the calendar each month to mark the end of the old and the start of the new? I loved doing that as a kid—especially when it was time for my favorite month of the year—August! Yeah, August! It’s my birthday month; it’s
summer in all its glory; it’s Indian Market; it’s the Opera; it’s time to shoot the Wine and Chile cover and be surrounded by 100 chefs for an entire afternoon; it’s tomato time; it’s, well, it’s just practically everything that makes me happy. And that’s the way I feel about the August issue this year—it’s practically everything that makes me happy. In celebration of Indian Market, we are covering the two latest artistic categories to be added to the beloved event—Class X and Haute Couture. Our cover call-out, “What It Means To Be Native Now,” certainly sums it up. It means honoring the ages-old Native tradition of storytelling, and embracing the art of filmmaking to bring the stories to life. And it means taking the “rich pageantry” that has always surrounded traditional Native costumes, transforming it and walking it boldly down the runway of today. The Haute Couture and Prêt-à-Porter Fashion Show is a blockbuster! And if you would like an actual taste of what it means to be Native now, head out to the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center in Albuquerque and experience the amazing food at their Pueblo Harvest Café. They have managed to stay true to the traditional flavors of the fish and game and produce that have always been a part of Pueblo life, while playfully bringing it into the realm of cutting-edge cuisine. The remainder of the issue is an unabashed love affair with three restaurants you need to know about. The first is the Anasazi Restaurant—with a stunning new look to the venue and an exciting new chef to match. Remember the name Chef Edgar Beas, and don’t be fooled by his boyish looks—he is a mighty force to be reckoned with. And speaking of mighty forces... wait till you meet Chef Mary Loya, the mighty spirit of La Posada’s kitchen for the past 27 years. Of the many chef stories we have featured over the years, this is one who touched me like no other. People like Mary Loya are what New Mexico True is all about. Lastly, get yourself up to Taos and eat at Common Fire. Andy Lynch has ignited the culinary community with his concept, his chef, his food, his wine, his ambiance—and most of all, his crazy self. Bravo, Andy!
