May Issue Deadline: Mon 15th April Community Page Deadline 17th Apr 4
Hello again Everyone. I was very sad to learn this week that Roundabout News has closed down. It’s been a focal point in Carryduff for as long as we’ve been here. I remember forcibly walking my two up there so they’d get some exercise when they were small, with the bribe of sweets (probably defeating the purpose!). As they’re now 21 and 18, that was quite a while ago. It shows just how tough it is out there for everyone at the moment. It also reinforces the purpose behind this magazine - let’s all support our local businesses. If we don't use them, we could lose them! We’ve got some Spring themed articles this month, although as I’m sitting here typing there’s a snow blizzard outside that’s almost horizontal. Hopefully by the time this issue is in your hands, the snow will be gone and Spring will really have sprung Just in case it hasn't, I've printed more puzzles than ever before, hope you enjoy them.
10 12 The community pages towards the back are 12 more popular than ever too! The schools have all sent me bumper contributions this 14 month and all with loads of photos. (Many 28 thanks to all my school contacts.) It starts 33 on page 38 - do have a look. I’m asked occasionally by relatives if I can send them 47 a copy of the photos of their little darlings.
Regulars: Local Useful Numbers
Welcome to the April issue of the Carryduff Focus
That’s no problem, provided you’re looking for an emailed copy. (I can't print them for you.) Just send me an email request. (Email address at the bottom of the page.)
Until next time...
Deirdre

Wills - Part 1 Do you have a Will? It’s something everyone needs to consider at some point. If you’re not sure if you need one, read on. We have compiled some of the most common questions we receive from clients in relation to making a Will. “Why should I make a Will – everything will go to my family anyway so what is the benefit of a Will?” ▪ A Will allows you to name the people who you want to distribute your estate (known as 'the executors'). By making a Will YOU can choose who you would like to take on this somewhat onerous task. Without a Will in place your next of kin will be primarily responsible which can be a difficult burden at such an emotional time. ▪ You can ensure you leave your estate to the people you want to receive it. Currently without a Will the law stands that your spouse will receive the majority of your estate. However if you would like to leave specific gifts e.g. to a sibling or grandchild, a Will is the best way to ensure your wishes are carried out. “What should my Will contain?” Your Will should outline your wishes after your death – this can be in relation to the distribution of your money and possessions but it can also refer to non-pecuniary wishes such as: ▪ Your remains – as morbid as it may seem it is something we all have to think about. Whether you choose to be buried or cremated can be put into a Will. The provision is not binding on the executors however your wishes will be known. ▪ Charitable Legacies – can be easily outlined in a Will. (The added benefit to this is that at present they are not liable to Inheritance Tax) ▪ Sentimental items – such as jewellery or photographs can be left to specific people. “I want my wife to remain in the marital home when I pass away, however I want to ensure the house is ultimately left to my son – can I do this?” This is a common question, particularly in the farming community. You have two options – You can use your Will to grant your wife a Life Interest – i.e. a Right of Residence until she passes away, and request that thereafter the house be transferred to your son. The alternative is that you and your wife make 'Mutual Wills' – i.e. you both leave to each other your whole estates and once the second spouse passes away everything is left to your son. If you require further advice on setting up a Will, Campbell Stafford’s experienced team will be able to help you. Please contact Michael Stafford or Louise Harvey for more information. In Part 2 next issue, we will cover more common questions about Wills.

Focus on Movies
By Peter Stevenson
AT THE CINEMA: Oz: The Great and Powerful PG, (130 mins) 74 YEARS! It’s been 74 years since Judy Garland slipped on those ruby slippers and ventured down that yellow brick road. The Wizard of Oz has proven itself a perennial family favourite in its seven decades, so it takes a very special director or a decent director with a fantastic story to dare to make its prequel. Enter Sam Raimi; perhaps not the best director, but with his Spider-man trilogy (among others) under his belt, he’s certainly a very successful one. Raimi pinches his best idea from Victor Fleming (the director in 1939) and keeps Kansas in black-and-white; it is a small, claustrophobic space, heightened by Raimi’s use of the 4:3 aspect ratio. When Oz arrives in his namesake land, vivid colour floods the screen and the ratio changes to give a panoramic view of this land Over the Rainbow. The final battle is a credit to Raimi; he wrings out every drop of tension from an illusion (like movie-making itself, maybe?), his use of smoke (literally) and mirrors beautifully brings the story to a satisfying climax. James Franco (Spider-man) plays Oz, a sleazy carnival magician who, while on the run from an angry mob, is whisked away to Oz (the land) in his hot-air balloon. Franco coasts along, delivering the minimum emotional range required and completely fails at the more tender, intimate moments. Rachel Weisz and Mila Kunis are the Wicked Witches of the East & West respectively. They live up to their names, Weisz particularly revelling her wickedness. Michelle Williams plays Glinda, the Good Witch of the South and does very well. Oz is a good movie, there’s no denying it, but it will never be judged on its own merit. It will always be compared to its seminal sequel and here, I’m afraid, it falls flat. 3/5
On DVD: People Like Us 12A (114 mins) Not so boldly going where many movies have gone before, Star Trek writer Alex Kurtzman directs and co-writes this tender weepie about a not so close-knit family. His own Kirk (Chris Pine) reunites with Kurtzman to play a stressed out business man who avoids his family at all costs. When his father dies however, Sam Harper (Pine) must return to comfort his mother (Michelle Pfeiffer). As they tend to do, family secrets emerge, among them the revelation that Sam is not an only child. His father had a daughter Frankie (Elizabeth Banks) so Sam goes in search of her… Both Pine and Banks give solid, all-round performances. Pine seems well-suited to the role of Sam, but he waivers slightly as his emotional range is pushed but he claws back his composure to make Sam, not only a believable character, but a sympathetic one as well. Banks skilfully steers Frankie around the pitfalls of becoming a one-dimensional character. She is not quite multi-faceted but gives a good performance nonetheless. Michael Hall D’Addano is wonderful as Frankie’s smart-alec son, providing laughs and adding a missing depth to the overall proceedings. Sam’s mother Lillian (Pfeiffer) provides the standout performance here. Her inner conflict keeps her at a distance from her son but Pfeiffer remains the kernel of her shrinking (or should that be expanding?) family. Kurtzman directs a watchable family drama with some clever nuances and rare insights into the minutiae of family dynamics but it is too long and meanders towards a rather drab conclusion. It will never be a blockbuster but at least it got Kurtzman and Pine away from the Enterprise…for a while. 3/5 34 To advertise t: 90 817579 e: info@localfocusmags.co.uk www.localfocusmags.co.uk

In another of our series of articles about our local environment, Helen Long writes about her observations of nature, right here in Carryduff
When I was at school, one of the science teachers was nick-named The Buzzard, although I could never quite understand why. Interestingly, both he and I have now ended up living here in Carryduff! With my school-days now a distant memory, and since volunteering for the RSPB, I have become much more familiar with his name-sake, this iconic bird of prey. And what a wonderful bird it is! People sometimes ring the RSPB office, having mistaken them for eagles, which is understandable, as they look so magnificent, soaring on their broad, brown wings. They are most easily seen here in the spring and summer, quartering the skies as they search for prey far below. I have viewed them from my own conservatory, circling on the thermals in that lazy, flapflap-glide way they have. But they are best seen out in the open in such places as the grounds of the Lough Moss Leisure Centre. Waiting for a wing-beat, I once counted for up to a minute, as one circled above me on a thermal, but I had to give up in the end, as my neck was becoming too sore! If you learn to recognise their distinctive ‘mewing’ call, then that may well be the first thing that alerts you to their presence. I was feeling very chuffed with myself on this form of identification, until one of ‘my’ starlings (ever the mimics) learned to imitate the call, and had me looking skywards on several occasions, with not a buzzard in sight. (I bet the starling had a right chuckle to itself at having hood-winked me!) This problem was recently compounded by a second starling imitating the first one, so it’s a bit of a double whammy! Buzzards have come back from near-extinction, following the devastation of the rabbit population (their main prey) in the 1950s by Myxomatosis, a horrible disease introduced specifically to reduce rabbit numbers. They are now riding high in more senses than one, and unless you are a rabbit, you should be delighted to see them in the skies above Carryduff. By the way, The Buzzard never taught me, and perhaps if he had, my physics would have improved. Instead, it was the quiet, self-effacing English teacher, and ex-reargunner-and-Colditz-prisoner, Wee Norrie, who was my true inspiration: and the rest, as they say, is history! Helen Long 36

Carryduff Primary School progressed through the South Down heats to qualify for the Northern Ireland Hockey Cup Finals in April. The girls are pictured (left) with their coach Julie Hart (on the far left) and school principal Barbara Preston. Pupils wore their pyjamas to school
as part of their Charity Week fundraising events (right). All money raised during the week will go to TinyLife. Pictured are the P4 class sporting their PJs with their teacher Fionnuala O'Callaghan.
St Joseph’s Primary School Congratulations to St Joseph’s Girls’ Gaelic Football team (right) who have qualified for County Well done Girls! Finals. They are the third school team to make it to the finals as the boys’ football and the hurling team qualified earlier this year. Yasmin and Maria (left) rose to the Environmental YouthSpeak Challenge when they represented our school at Castlereagh Borough Council. They both spoke on the topic of ‘My waste’s got talent- what can it become?’ Their presentations were lively and informative, and gave plenty of food for thought. They certainly didn’t talk a load of rubbish!

Millennium Integrated Primary School This term we have celebrated Integrated Education Week. The theme this year was ‘Me, We, Our World’. Each class prepared displays in the class about their favourite countries. Some of our parents who come from other countries also added to our displays. We had contributions from countries such as Pakistan, South Africa, America, England, Spain, Poland and Turkey. As part of the week we hosted an interschool Dodge ball competition (right) Children from visiting schools mixed in with the children from Millennium to make truly integrated teams. The boys and girls had an enjoyable morning designing their team strip and competing against each other. We also held our annual interschool quiz which was won this year by Loughview IPS who had a one point lead over Millennium IPS. Well done to all the children involved. This year World Book day coincided with Integrated Education Week. All the boys and girls dressed up as characters from their favourite books (right). We had several Harry Potters casting spells, the Witch from Roald Dahl’s book The Witches, Matilda and Miss Trunchbull, Oliver Twist and Captain Underpants to name but a few. The costumes were all very creative and it was obvious that a lot of thought had been put in to them. Pictured left is the cow that our P1 and 2 children decorated for Mother’s Day. It is on display in Forestside for all to see.
St Joseph’s Nursery School In Nursery we have been finding out about staying safe. Jake’s story tells us about how our puppet helped our other puppet Jenny whenever she was sad. “Bukola has a badge, a sun. Jenny was crying because the bullies put mud on her page and she was sad. She was wiping her tears and she had to tell someone. Bukola told her she had to tell someone. She had to tell an adult lady or an adult man. My mummy and daddy are adults and I have a grandpa and a childminder and they’re adults. You tell an adult if someone has been bad or not. Jenny told the adult and all her friends came with her and they all told the adult. Bukola has a brown face and black air my face is peach and my hair is the same as Bukola’s but it’s a different colour. All of us are different it’s what makes us you and me.” Jake Please mention the Carryduff Focus Magazine when contacting advertisers
