Welcome to the April issue of the Carryduff Focus Been watching much TV lately? I catch myself saying there’s nothing on, it’s all rubbish, but just occasionally there are some absolute gems. I’ve really loved the 6-part drama Line of Duty on BBC2 which has just finished. It was filmed in Belfast, and much of the background was deliberately in soft focus, but that didn't stop me trying to work out where it was filmed. I could have sworn I saw the Ormeau Road at one point! I’ve also loved watching the Channel 4 documentaries from the International Space Station, a fascinating insight into the astronauts’ lives, and some amazing views of our planet from their perspective. I was struck by something the current commander, Japanese Koichi Wakata said when asked about his favourite view of Earth from the ISS. I expected him to say Japan, but instead he said he loved looking at it all, and there are no borders visible from space. It puts earth-bound petty squabbles over territory into perspective, doesn’t it? I was also struck by how smiley all the

10 astronauts were - one said they undergo 12 extensive training in how to get along with each other and how to work as a team. 14 No grumpy people allowed in space! 16 Have a great April and Happy Easter! 20 Deirdre 22 47 Deadline for adverts for the May issue: Mon 14th April 2014

Focus on Movies

By Peter Stevenson

AT THE CINEMA: Escape from Planet Earth PG (89mins) I suppose the premise of this movie could be considered quite clever: instead of the usual stuff about alien invasion; little green men intent on world domination or colonisation, the aliens are the heroes. When a rescue mission goes terribly wrong, brave Scorch Supernova (Brendan Fraser) is captured, and it is up to his geeky older brother Gary (Rob Corrdry) to head to the Dark Planet (Earth) and save him.

1 Sheets + Overs LOC75659 Carryduff Magazine Sig 18 Back

Mediocrity-thy name is Escape from Planet Earth, there is just nothing in this movie about which to get excited. The animation is perfectly satisfactory but there is nothing spectacular, especially when compared to a movie like Finding Nemo, for instance. An aspect of a movie which can always save it from burial among the mediocre is a snazzy script, one which sparkles with satire and pulsates with smart, side-splitting punchlines, guaranteed to tickle the ribs of even the most cynical and weathered moviegoer. Unfortunately, here, a wonderful script is notable by its absence. Some nuggets of scintillating dialogue do shine through, however briefly, for example, Gary’s son Kip announces, ‘When I grow up, I want to be just like Uncle Scorch!’ to which Gary sardonically replies, ‘Well, time to have another kid.’ Director Callan Brunker relies too much on ‘star power’ to attract audiences. As mentioned, Brendan Fraser is part of the ensemble, so too is Sarah Jessica Parker, William Shatner, Jessica Alba and even Ricky Gervais. Instead of trying to gather as many celeb voices and cameos as possible, more focus should have been put on story which would have made this so much better. As it is, let’s hope that these particular aliens invade every other planet before coming to Earth! 2 / 5

On DVD: Frozen PG (108 mins)

The last time Disney plundered the canon of Hans Christian Andersen fairy-tales was way back in 1989, resulting in one of Disney studios’ most successful films. I refer, of course, to The Little Mermaid. Now, 25 years later, Disney have returned to Denmark and this time have based their movie Frozen on Andersen’s ‘The Snow Queen’ in the hopes of a repeat performance. It is inadvisable to compare this to previous Disney fairy tales such as Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella or The Little Mermaid itself, even though they do share some vital Disney DNA. The most obvious is the big, Broadway-inspired musical numbers which drive the plot forward while simultaneously soliloquising certain characters innermost thoughts (‘Let It Go’ is a perfect example), a tradition which made a comeback notably in The Little Mermaid. We now live, however in a post-Tangled world; family films now aim for the big laughs instead of having a few characters provide light comic relief (Timon and Pumbaa in The Lion King, for example). Here, every character is a comic creation, some more than others, in particular Olaf (Josh Gad) and mute reindeer Sven, who can wither anyone with a look. As expected, Disney’s adapted plot is relatively simple: Princesses Elsa (Idina Menzel) and her younger sister Anna (Kristen Bell) are best buds until Elsa accidentally injures Anna with her ability to control ice (an ability she was born with) and, riddled with guilt, she locks herself away until her coronation day when Queen Elsa goes on a rampage, blanketing the kingdom in eternal Winter. It is up to Anna to stop her sister and save her kingdom but can she do it?! The humour and plot of Frozen are more straightforward than the similar Tangled but in ways it proves to be more sophisticated. Keep trying Disney! 3/ 5 36

In another of our series of articles about our local environment, Helen Long writes about her observations of nature, right here in Carryduff

The month of April must be the busiest in the wildlife calendar. The birds are now all turned out in their Sunday best, as the breeding season gets under way. Nest building will be either going on or complete by now, and many birds will already be bringing food to their young. As I write, a charming male chaffinch has taken up residence in my garden, and insists on proclaiming his presence far and wide. That short little song of his, repeated ad infinitum and ending with a flourish, is a sure sign of spring! It must be working, too, as I spotted a couple of females hopping around on the ground - the chaffinch version of ‘Groupies’?! I can remember seeing chaffinches from my earliest bird-watching days, when my mother helped and encouraged me with identification. But there are many other finches living in and around our homes. The goldfinch population, once so small, seems to have really exploded over the past 10 years - it must be all the niger seed that people are providing in their feeders! However, despite their beautiful bright colours, they aren’t my favourite finch: they can be quite belligerent, and if you have ever witnessed one of their squabbles you will know what I mean. The most handsome, to my mind, is the bullfinch. Because they are comparatively rare, they are well worth celebrating when you do spot one! I was lucky to get these photos (right) in my back garden earlier this year. They seem to appear in my garden at specific times in the year, and are well named because of the blunt head and beak. I guess they must have a song, but I have yet to hear it. As you will see from the photos, their love of the ripe rowan berries is evident - perhaps they especially prefer the pink variety! If you haven’t already got one, why not consider planting a rowan tree in your garden? They are attractive to many other birds, especially mistle thrushes, who will do their best to defend ‘their’ tree from all comers, in order to keep its berries for their own private consumption! No human similarities there, then?! Helen Long 38

St Joseph’s Primary School On Monday 3rd March 2014, St Joseph's were hosts to the Eco Schools Green Flag Assessor training programme. The school was chosen to host this programme by Eco schools because of the extremely high standards it achieved during its Green flag assessment in May 2013. The assessors met the school's EcoCommittee to find out about all the environmental work being carried out by the school. The Eco-Committee also took the assessors on a tour around the school building, the Sensory Garden and the Eco Garden. The assessors were very impressed by St Joseph's fantastic environmental projects and the enthusiasm shown by the children and staff. The Big Pedal challenge began on Monday 3rd march. A great number of our children could be seen travelling to school on their bicycles and scooters. It was great to see some parents accompanying their children on their bicycles too!

PSNI Police Advice - How to deal with bogus callers Most people who call at your home will be genuine. But sometimes someone may turn up unannounced, with the intention of tricking their way into your home to steal from you. If you are in any doubt check your caller out with QUICK CHECK on Freephone 0800 013 22 90 Before you answer the door make sure your back door is locked If you have a door chain use it before opening the door  Ask the caller for identification and check it  Ask them to wait outside and close the door whilst you check - genuine callers will not mind  Ring 0800 013 22 90. They will check on your behalf that the person at the door is genuine. Do not let anyone into your home until you are safisfied as to who they are.  

Millennium Integrated Primary School

Every March all integrated schools in Northern Ireland celebrate Integrated Education Week (IEW). This year the theme was ‘Building Bridges’. At Millennium IPS we began the week with our P5 class assembly. The class introduced the theme with a very entertaining assembly all about the differences between the communities here and ways to ‘build bridges’ between them. Following assembly there was a very sticky session of bridge building using marshmallows and spaghetti! The children in P6 and P7 had been learning about religious and social differences and this was taken a step further when we went on a tour of the murals around Belfast. We went to the ‘Peace Wall’ where the children got to sign their names and write their own message of peace. Later in the week the children made flags and designed murals showing what represents them and these were used as part of the closing assembly in Friday. Our P1 class decorated a ‘calf’ with daffodils for Marie Curie. You can see their lovely work in Forestside. (right) 42

The Laurence Trust have launched the first ever male eating disorders website in Northern Ireland to coincide with the beginning of Eating Disorders Awareness Week, on 24th – 28th Feb. The website aims to bring much needed help, support and information to men living with an eating disorder and their carers. The Trust was set up after the death of Laurence Nugent following a battle with bulimia and severe depression. It is run by Laurence’s mother Pam, brother Chris, family members and friends, to raise awareness of the issue and fundraise to help other sufferers. Chris says “The Laurence Trust intends to act as a voice for people living with an eating disorder and inform the public that men are affected too. They need the same support and help just as much as women do, and in turn attempt to break the stereotype that an eating disorder is exclusively a 'woman's problem'.” Pam says “We are delighted to launch The Laurence Trust website, which is a vital resource for parents and young people living every day with an eating disorder. I would like to thank the volunteers who run the charity for their unstinting assistance; and everyone who donates to us; without their support this website would not be possible.” To find out more, visit our new website, email thelaurencetrust@hotmail.co.uk or find us on Facebook.
