And loads of community info too - there seems to be plenty of local activities to tempt you into the great outdoors. Turn to the community pages at the back to find out about Knockbreda Parish Church’s Craft and Produce Fair (complete with hog roast) and the Spring activities at Rowallane Gardens, as well as everything the local schools have been up to. There’s also a Spring Fair at Carryduff Playcare Centre towards the end of April - their ad and all the details are on page 15. Of course, on 1st April we have April Fools Day, traditionally a day for playing practical jokes. I wonder if any of this year’s pranks will be as funny as the classic Swiss spaghetti growing report broadcast by the BBC in 1957 or Burger King’s announcement they’d launched a ‘Left-Handed Whopper’ burger in 1998. Just google ‘best April Fools jokes’ if you need a bit of cheering up - the classroom pranks are sure to raise a smile! Have a great Easter. Until next time....

While few of us are likely to spend nearly £900 on Flymo’s latest robot lawnmower, let alone £2,500 for a high-end robot mower, there are lots of garden gadgets that can make life easier and more fun. One of the most useful developments is the arrival of cordless tools ranging from lawnmowers to electric chainsaws. Battery technology has improved dramatically in a very short time, so it’s possible to get tools such as Black & Decker’s 36V cordless strimmer that can cut up to 3,750 metres on a single charge. Just remember to charge them up before you use them, as recharging flat batteries can take a while. If you fancy something a bit less high tech, Japanese hori-hori knives might be right up your street: the name means “digging digging” and a hori-hori knife’s straight sharp blade makes it perfect for everything from planting to cutting roots. They can be a little tricky to find, but eBay is always a good source of such tools. Another great tool is the Woodman’s Pal. It’s a little pricey - expect to pay £50 upwards - but it’s really clever

6

and really useful. The Pal was originally designed for the US Army in the early 1940s and it’s a cross between an axe and a machete, with a hooked section on the end. That makes it great for clearing all kinds of vegetation, and it replaces a whole bunch of tools including pruning saws, shears, loppers and in some cases, even chainsaws. This year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) featured the usual home entertainment technology, lots of TVs and even more laptops, but it also had an unusually large selection of garden gadgets. One of the cutest was the Green Farm Cube. Another Japanese design, and it’s a hydroponic grow box that enables you to grow plants such as herbs anywhere all year round. At around £120 it’s quite expensive, but it looks great and works well. It’s particularly good for people who want to grow things but don’t have a garden to do it. It seems that smartphones are taking over every aspect of our lives, so it’s not a surprise that they’re starting to look at our gardens too. App-connected gadgets are everywhere at the moment. Netatmo’s Connected

Weather Station (approx £110) tells your phone about indoor and outdoor humidity, temperature and air quality as well as predicting the weather, while Koubachi’s Plant Sensor 2 Outdoor (approx £96) measures soil moisture, sunlight, infra-red light, temperature and more to let you know exactly how well valuable plants are doing. Another CES exhibitor, Edyn, promises to deliver the “connected garden” with sensors that analyse the soil, monitor the temperature and even check the weather forecast to help you decide what to plant and how to look after it. The product range also includes smart water valves that automatically water your plants, and solar power means you don’t need to run any cables. It’s overkill for a couple of blooms from Homebase, but if you’re a serious gardener it’s a seriously clever bit of kit. Edyn is currently available for pre-order, and the sensor and water valve are $99 (£65) and $59 (£39) respectively.

• 2 large potatoes, peeled and thickly sliced • 1 large aubergine, trimmed and sliced • 3 tbsp olive oil • 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed • 150ml vegetable stock • 1 tsp dried oregano • 2 tsp tomato puree • 300g thick Greek yogurt • 2 medium eggs, beaten • 1 tbsp cornflour • ¼ tsp grated nutmeg • 1 large tomato, sliced • Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Sprinkle with some freshly grated Parmesan cheese or thin slices of mozzarella cheese before baking to make this dish even tastier!

14

Bring a large pan of lightly salted water to the boil. Add the sliced potatoes and simmer for about 5 minutes until almost tender. Drain well and refresh under cold running water. Set aside. Place the aubergine slices in a shallow bowl and drizzle over 2 tbsp of the olive oil. Heat a heavybased frying pan over a medium heat. Cook the aubergine slices for 1-2 minutes on each side until tender and just golden. Remove and set aside. Add the rest of the oil to the pan and gently fry the garlic for 1 minute. Whisk in the vegetable stock, oregano and tomato puree and bring to the boil. Remove from the heat. Preheat the oven to 190C, 170C fan, Gas Mark 5. Layer the potato and aubergine slices in a large ovenproof dish (at least 8cm deep). Season lightly with salt and freshly ground black pepper between each layer. Pour the stock mixture over the vegetables. Place the yogurt, eggs and cornflour in a bowl and beat together until smooth. Add the nutmeg and season lightly. Spoon the mixture over the layered vegetables and top with the tomato slices. Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45Answer minuteson until the 38 top page is golden and bubbling.

by Kate Duggan www.kateduggan.co.uk

Summer is just around the corner; long sleeves have been banished for another few seasons and we’re eyeing up new sandals, sunglasses and swimsuits. It’s all too easy to skimp on bodycare in the colder months, but now the sun is finally out it’s time to treat ourselves to some much-needed TLC. Good exfoliation is a must, particularly if you’re planning on self-tanning. Unfortunately, many of the scrubs on the high-street are too harsh, stripping the skin of its natural oils and leaving it feeling scratched and sore. Heyland and Whittle’s Exfoliating Soap Bag (£6) is a much better option. Filled with natural soaps that are packed with essential oils, it’ll make a noticeable difference to your skin and is the perfect alternative to shower gel. For a really indulgent treat, however, it’s hard to beat the Lime & Ginger Salt Glow by Elemis. At £36.50, it isn’t cheap, but it works wonders and smells divine. While bubbles are fun, if you want your bath product to leave your skin silky smooth, then oil is your best bet. Neom’s Tranquillity Bath and Shower Oil is heavenly. A bottle costs £40 from www.amara.com, but a few drops go a long way. Along with skin nourishing ingredients, such as jojoba and Vitamin E, it has a high concentration of essential oils (12 in total), to help you destress, unwind and forget that row you had with your manager. Pour yourself a large glass of wine, lock the bathroom door, put some music on and… relax. If you moisturise all over

18

every day, you can get away with a light body lotion. But, let’s face it, how many of us have time? If your daily beauty routine is more ‘bare essentials’ than ‘at home spa’ it’s worth investing in a heavy duty hydrator for the weekend. Aveda’s Beautifying Body Moisturiser (£22) is wonderfully rich, but absorbs well, with none of that greasy residue that some high street brands can leave you with. The smell is, quite simply, amazing – you may well find that you attract a lot of compliments on your new perfume. Most of us are guilty of neglecting our poor feet, particularly when we can hide them away in boots all winter. But, come summer, the most beautiful pair of designer sandals won’t hide dry, cracked heels and chipped polish. A salon pedicure always feels like a real indulgence and can get your feet in tip-top condition for the warmer months. For minimal maintenance, opt for a long-lasting varnish, such as shellac, in a colour that co-ordinates with your favourite sandals. Aqua, coral, bronze or soft violet all look great with a tan. Keep the good work up at home with regular moisturising. We love Narynda’s Heel Balm (£9.50), which is completely natural and unbelievably nourishing. (It also works wonders on dry elbows.) www.narynda.com Cherry-red and ‘nude’ lips are both key trends for this summer. Whichever look you decide to embrace, you need a smooth surface to get the best result. Red lipstick, in particular, will highlight any areas of chapping or dryness. Mint Julips Lip Scrub by Lush (£5.50) gently buffs away dry patches and softens skin. Warning: sugar, lemon & peppermint make it rather tasty, so you may find yourself reaching for it quite a lot…

By Solange Hando At the southern end of the Caribbean, smaller than the Isle of Wight and a world away from its big sister island Trinidad, Tobago is a gem of golden beaches and pristine rainforest with low rise developments mostly confined to the airport area. On this bucolic island, life moves at a gentle pace and little disturbs the peace but the occasional beat of a steel drum in the morning or the call of fishermen hauling their nets on the beach. Goats graze on waste land, men carve calabash into bird feeders and candle holders and on the cliff tops, old colonial forts scatter their ruins among banana and sea grape trees. Even Scarborough, the local capital, seems little more than an overgrown village, sprinkling its pastel-coloured villas on the leafy slopes framing the harbour. Only the arrival of a cruise ship brings a semblance of life on the waterfront.

Meanwhile along the coast, blue parrot fish and fire coral glow on the Buccoo Reef and the sun shines on meandering sands and crescent coves, such as the idyllic Englishman’s bay, laid back Castara, beautiful Parlatuvier or Charlotteville,

22

draped in bougainvillaea and famous for fresh fish and ‘cow heel’ soup. Boats bob on crystalclear water, babbling streams come down to the sea and swaying coconut palms mirror themselves in the lagoons. The north coast is a perfect Caribbean postcard but the south is rugged and wild, sprayed by Atlantic waters, dotted with islands, a few sheltered coves and fishing villages. Just inland from Prince’s Bay, the Argyle waterfall tumbles almost 200 feet into an emerald pool where local women come to bathe, sitting all dressed in the water. The path is lined with bamboo and teak, mahogany and silk cotton trees rising from massive buttressed roots. Then there’s Speyside, its near-deserted beach and verdant hills, and Little Tobago island, just 20 minutes offshore, where frigate birds hover around precipitous cliffs and in the forest red-billed tropic birds nest on the ground among fallen foliage, fanning their tail as you approach. Tobago is a haven for wildlife, both along the shore and the Main Ridge which rises to over 1600 feet and stretches almost

from coast to coast. Prickly palms, trumpet trees, mimosa fern, wild nutmeg, tangled roots and lianas where heliconia add touches of red and gold, the forest is home to myriad creatures, from leaf cutter ants and whistling frogs to whipping spiders, the odd boa constrictor and over 400 species of birds. But what matters in this jungle is not how far you walk but how much you see, here a yellow and black sugar bird, there a white-necked thrush, a bluebacked mannekin, a noisy chacalaca, an iridescent parrot or a humming bird, or a bluecrowned motmot, the ‘king of the forest’. When a sudden breeze sweeps through the canopy, the trees burst into song as a welcome shower of ‘liquid sunshine’ washes everything clean. Later, when the sun dips into the ocean, the pelicans wake from their slumbers, skimming the waves, wings outstretched before diving razor sharp into the deep in search of supper. In the summer months, the giant leatherback turtles return to Tobago Island, ready to nest on their favourite beaches under the starlit Caribbean skies.

Cosy, comfortable and oh-so pretty, country style has eternal appeal. Think roses winding around the porch, crackling log fires, chickens in the yard and a Victoria sponge cooling on the range cooker. As interiors expert Katherine Sorrell says, who could resist? Moving to the country may be a fantasy for many of us, but even if you can’t actually make the move, you can evoke a charming country style in your home. The aim is to create a look that appears to have evolved naturally over time. Overall, choose either off-white or pastel walls, or perhaps a block-printed wallpaper, the latter featuring delicate, trailing florals or something more bold and blowsy. Tactile, natural floor coverings such as sisal, jute or coir have the right kind of honest and hard-working good looks, while rugs are warm and practical. With furniture, keep an eye on balance and proportion. You can put all kinds of styles together if you keep an eye on their size and scale. It might be a Georgian, Victorian or early 20th century piece, antique, junkshop, hand-me-down or homemade, but it should never look overtly modern and always be sturdy, simple and generously sized. Squashy sofas, big armchairs, plain wooden chairs, benches and stools, and the occasional wirework or Lloyd Loom piece are all key. Add dining chairs with ladder or spindle backs, plus a scrubbedpine table, and complement them with a large, open dresser.

28

Some distressed paintwork here and there enhances the overall effect. When choosing fabrics, an informal mix of gently worn patterns gives a lovely effect. Texture is as important as pattern, so opt for a combination that could include florals, tweed, ginghams, stripes, polka dots, paisley, tapestry, embroidery and textured plains such as linen, wool, velvet or mohair. For a hand-made, vintage feel, include some knitting or crochet, too. Window treatments should be understated – perhaps a Roman blind with a decorative trim, or a pair of full-length, gathered curtains and a simple pelmet. As for upholstery, ensure it is wellstuffed and comfortable. Piping looks smart and traditional, but the occasional frilled edging can be delightful. Complete the effect with piles of throws, blankets and cushions of all shapes and sizes. Lighting can make or break a room. Add table and floor lamps to brighten corners and illuminate work areas: wrought iron, brass, turned-wood, frillyedged glass, plaster or ceramic bases, with understated fabric or card shades, are all great choices. A few candles dotted here and there and, of course, the appealing flicker of a real fire, will really enhance the atmosphere.

As for accessories, any number of extra touches will transform your home into a special country retreat. For walls, it might be watercolour landscapes or botanical prints, needlepoint or cross-stitch samplers or woodblock illustrations, Wicker baskets and wooden boxes make good-looking storage solutions, while it goes without saying that chintz, blue-andwhite or spongeware crockery is just the thing for displaying on the dresser. You could even make a display from cooking equipment such as jelly moulds or copper pans. To finish the whole look off, arrange masses of fresh flowers in informal containers – jam jars, mugs or enamel pitchers, perhaps – to give a fresh scent of the country, whatever your location.

Movie Focus

By Peter Stevenson

AT THE CINEMA: The Boy Next Door 15 (91 mins Teacher Claire Peterson (Jennifer Lopez) is recovering from the breakdown of her marriage; struggling to find a way forward, she fails to find solace in even the classic literature she teaches. One fateful morning Claire is having trouble with her electric garage door when who should come to rescue but hunky new neighbour Noah (Ryan Guzman). It isn’t long before Noah is spending more and more time at the Petersons’ (Claire encourages Noah’s friendship with her son Kevin (Ian Nelson)) while enjoying the ‘harmless’ flirtation Noah shares with her). After a disastrous blind date, Claire gives in to her growing attraction to Noah but immediately regrets it. It is now that Noah’s true colours shine through. Don’t worry, I haven’t given anything away, the movie doesn’t really get going until this point. It’s also the point at which the audience’s interest starts to plummet and it’s such a pity. From the lukewarm premise described above, there is created a whole load of possibilities, interesting plotlines and beguiling twists. Even the story writer Barbara Curry goes with is dripping with thrilling potential. No-one recognized this however, and the result is that we follow J Lo from scene to scene, trying to see if she can inject any continuity, coherence or structure into her pretty flimsy character. Guzman has the same problem: Noah could be a rather interesting sociopath but he seems to be channelling the spirit of Ryan Phillippe in Cruel Intentions and never quite becomes the villain he should be. Director Rob Cohen seems to be stuck, unable to elevate this movie to a level beyond cheap thrills and average scares. If this is the calibre of the neighbours, the old adage ‘location, location, location’ becomes more important than ever! 2 / 5

On DVD: The Imitation Game 12A (113 mins)

What is it about Benedict Cumberbatch’s knack for playing modern genii? His first major role (according to IMDB) was playing Stephen Hawking in the BBC’s imaginatively titled (but excellent) Hawking, way back in 2004, and of course his latest TV role is as the fictional, eponymous genius of Sherlock. In his latest incarnation on the silver screen, he takes on another genius, this time in the form of enigmatic cryptanalyst and cruciverbalist Alan Turing. Turing’s story is the tale of the British (ultimately successful) attempt to crack the Nazi’s Enigma code. What this movie does however, as well as depicting the scientific methodology which goes in to code cracking, is that it deconstructs Turing as a person, showing the unfolding of three parallel stories, each concerning Turing during three different time periods: the first concerns his childhood (well, early teens) at a boarding school where he does not fit in, but he still finds his first (only?) love, the second takes up the bulk of the movie and focuses on Bletchley Park; the hunt for the riddling machine’s solution and Turing’s platonic love affair with fellow cryptanalyst Joan Clarke (Keira Knightley) which, although true, is given perhaps too much screen time, taking precedence over Turing’s relationships with men; these relationships should be much more prominent because they lead on to the third time period; the 1951 police investigation into Turing’s ‘criminal’ homosexual activities. Cumberbatch and Knightley both deliver powerful, emotionally driven performances which compensate for any character flaws: Turing’s rude, detached ambivalence towards his fellow cryptanalysts, indeed his fellow human beings and Clarke’s rather depressing cynicism are quickly forgiven at the sad ending; more disheartening when you remember it is based on real events. ‘Enigma’ may have been cracked but will Turing ever be? 4 / 5 34

I can’t let another month go by without mentioning the Pied Wagtail.

Is it me, or have they become more prolific and ubiquitous this year? They seem to particularly favour car parks and open spaces, and they are regulars at the Leisure Centre. In fact, they even make use of the facilities, as last summer I watched a little group playing in the enclosed hockey pitch! So funny to see their little mincing runs along the astro-turf, and then sudden, chirruping flight upwards to catch small insects! And later on, there was a family all lined up along the cross-bar of the goals on the top football pitch! None of the fieldguides mentioned that they were keep-fit enthusiasts, but I am beginning to suspect that possibility! They are birds whose antics always fill me with joy! They seem to stay in their family groups long after the young have fledged, which is quite unusual. I actually find this to be one of their very endearing qualities. I could discover nothing about whether they mate for life, as some birds do, but I sense that this might be the case, from my own observations. As their name implies, they are black-and-white birds, the female being only slightly greyer than the male. With their sharp, pointed beaks, they are specialists at jabbing at winged insects. They have been variously described as sprightly and skittish, with jerky movements, and of course the characteristic wagging tail! In cities they have been known to roost in vast numbers, probably for warmth and protection from predators. According to the British Trust for Ornithology, they were recorded in Anglo Saxon times; and there is even fossil evidence dating back 125,000 years! Yet their typical lifespan is a mere two years. The handsome subject of this photo is not a Carryduff bird, but a city slicker from central Belfast, who was not quite as shy as our locals! He was chirruping around as I walked in the grounds of the City Hall, and by good luck a bus happened to be passing in the background! Little did I realise at the time what a good backdrop the Metro bus would make to the black-and-white livery of this cheery little character!

ST JOSEPH’S PRIMARY SCHOOL Nerve Centre Belfast visited the P4’s to help promote the use of computer coding. Using the app ScratchJr, the children were taught how to program their own interactive stories and games. In the process, they learnt how to solve problems, design projects and express themselves creatively on the I-Pads. (pictures on the right). Congratulations to the P6 and P7 girls on retaining the Priory Cup. Erin, Sophie, Meabh, Hannah, Ciara, Cara, Alex and Aimee put on magnificent display of talent, determination and teamwork which saw us unbeaten in every game and emerging as worthy winners of this prestigious and much sought after trophy. There were 6 teams in the competition but there was only one winner. We were outstanding throughout the competition and drew praise and comment from all around. Team captain Erin (left) was presented with the cup by Jamie Mulgrew, Captain of Linfield F.C. To make her day complete she was awarded ‘Female Player of the Tournament’ trophy, football and tickets for the Eddie Irvine Centre as recognition of her skill and leadership. The girls participated in the Penalty Kick competition, once again emerging as victors scoring 6 penalties. Meabh, as goalkeeper, played her part in saving several shots from opponents. CARRYDUFF PRIMARY SCHOOL Book Week in March - All classes participated in a range of activities to promote reading, particularly amongst the boys. Drop Everything And Read was great fun as the pupils had to carry a book everywhere with them on World Book Day, and when the bell rang they had to drop everything - even in PE!

Congratulations to Olivia from Mrs Maguire’s P7 class. Having won the local Castlereagh Council Environmental Youthspeak Competition in February, she went on to win both the Regional final and the overall Northern Ireland final of the competition. The competition, which is now in its 17th year, encourages environmental awareness among young people and gives them a platform to talk about local and global environmental issues. This year’s grand final was held at the Lagan Valley Island Centre in Lisburn with NI illusionist, David Meade, as compere, The excitement was immense as Olivia (alias superhero Janet Planet) was chosen firstly as the regional winner and finally as the overall winner for the whole of Northern Ireland. She returned to school with two beautiful trophies, a Kindle, gift vouchers for herself, and also £500 for our school. Well Done Olivia!

CARR PRIMARY SCHOOL Well done to Daniel, Jamie, Jemma, Jack, Iona and Chelsea, pictured top right. Keep up the hard work. These pupils were also supporting our red day to raise funds for Comic Relief. Reception and P1 became jungle explorers during their end of topic party. Everyone came dressed up and took part in an exciting and educational jungle experience. Stuart and Evie below are two scary tigers!! P4/5 enjoyed a Spanish Day, pictured right. The children dressed up as salsa dancers and matadors and had a Spanish meal. P4/5 also had a debate on the issue of bull fighting and performed Spanish dance and drama pieces. Well done to all who took part and to all our parents who went to a huge effort to dress your children up in such wonderful creations.
