Welcome to the May issue of the Carryduff Focus Hello everyone, we’ve lots of articles and puzzles in this issue to keep you busy throughout the month. If the weather in May is anything like it is today as I’m writing this, it will be glorious (we can only hope!) and you will probably be outside enjoying it. If exam fever has hit your house, or is about to, we’ve some great advice on revision techniques on page 32. Perhaps the article on sleep or the lack of it on page 30 will also help the same students! We’ve also some articles for the gardeners - water gardening on page 16 and a humorous take on herb growing on page 6 and a word from Helen Long our local nature expert on hedge/tree cutting and it’s impact on birds at this time of year - on page 37. Back on my favourite hobby horse - I’ve found a new site to track the International Space Station (ISS). Just put Belfast into the location field on www.spotthestation.nasa.gov and it will show you when you can see the ISS flying by, AND also the when you can view the Russian resupply ship ‘Progress 54P’ and ‘Dragon’ a commercial resupply ship. Now you know what I’ll be doing over the next few evenings! Deirdre Deadline for adverts for the June issue:

Focus on Movies

By Peter Stevenson

AT THE CINEMA: Muppets Most Wanted U (113 mins) The Muppets, I know, have been in endless sequels, musicals and literary adaptations, but in this first of their latest reboot; Kermit, Miss Piggy, Gonzo and the rest of the gang return to continue their story on an international scale, mixing daring thefts, crazy dopplegangers and zany adventure. The story is surprisingly faceted, but the plot runs as follows: relishing their comeback fame, the Muppets embark on a European tour, organised by their new manager Dominic Badguy (pronounced ‘Bad-gee’ – it’s French) (Ricky Gervais). Soon however, Kermit is kidnapped (only Animal notices) and replaced by evil criminal mastermind Constantine. The key quirk of the Muppets is that their movies are always tongue-in-cheek, whether they pastiche Hollywood fads or pay homage to their own medium, they never take themselves too seriously and this is the element of this movie which shines through the most, particularly through the music. The opening number critiques the inevitable decline in quality when it comes to sequels while Miss Piggy’s duet with Celine Dion shows exactly how a cameo with the Muppets should be done. The way to determine if a Muppet movie has been made successfully though is not by analysing the plot or the music, it is not even about approving or disapproving of the cameos; it is about seeing if the human actors can react naturally with their fuzzy counterparts and, I am delighted to say that here, they do. Both Gervais and Tina Fey (prison guard Nadya) react well to their puppetesque co-stars but it is Ty Burrell as Clouseau-like Interpol agent Jean Pierre Napoleon who is most at ease. He is paired up with Sam the Eagle to apprehend Constantine and their contrasting characters prove hilarious! More in this vein please, Disney. 3 / 5

On DVD: Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues 15 (119 mins) The original Anchorman, which was released in 2004, was a serendipitous occurrence; a group of funny men with Will Ferrell at the helm, doing adolescent, office-based skits, and pulling them together to make a coherent and ultimately very funny movie which actually had a point to make about sexual politics in the workplace, the eruption of feminism and the frustrating glass-ceiling women faced during the ’70’s in their place of work. Now Ron Burgundy (Ferrell) and wife and co-anchor Veronica Corningstone (Christina Applegate) live in the ’80‘s and it is a world in flux; one of transition in which the once mighty and autocratic Anchorman is fired and a WOMAN(!) is promoted to take his place. This sends Ron into a downward spiral and he ends up unemployed and an alcoholic. Veronica’s star, however, is in the ascendant (she is the woman who took Ron’s job) so divorce, almost inevitably follows. How can he redeem himself? By reassembling his now disbanded news team, consisting of Brick Tamland (Steve Carell), Brian Fantana (Paul Rudd) and Champ Kind (David Koechner) (the one in the cowboy hat) and launching (even if it’s on the graveyard shift) the ground breaking first 24-hour news channel. I won’t give away any more of the rather convoluted plot; the most important thing to note is what a disappointment this movie is, granted there some laugh-out-loud moments but they are too sparse, and those in the editors’ chair missed some film which is ripe for immediate pruning (the sequence at the lighthouse). The rest is merely box-ticking for the loyal fanbase, Brian’s sex panther cologne, for example, makes an appearance and there is a melee involving different news teams. Why was this movie not better?! It should have been. 3/ 5 36

In another of our series of articles about our local environment, Helen Long writes about her observations of nature, right here in Carryduff Alas, it is not a truth universally acknowledged that a hedge or a tree with a bird nesting in it must not be disturbed, cut down or trimmed. Yet it is the law! I have observed the sad evidence of this in Carryduff in previous years during the month of May, the peak nesting time. Farmers are very good, because they know the law, but it seems that a significant proportion of our own village population do not. The result is visible now, if you only keep your eyes open. Men come in with big chain saws and other machinery, and before you know it, a large proportion of the trees and hedges has been brutally trimmed, along with any bird-life that was inhabiting the felled branches. I am not against tree trimming; indeed I was most encouraged when a neighbour took control of a Lawson cypress hedge that had grown much too big for its boots. But the difference was that he did it in the winter, well outside the nesting season. He knew the law. As an RSPB member and volunteer, I feel the organisation needs to do more to educate the public about this subject. Other concerned local people have said much the same to me recently, which is why I am writing this. I am also going to lobby those I know in RSPB Headquarters for a much more vigorous media campaign about hedges. This is a case where softlysoftly doesn’t seem to work. Our native birds are already in serious trouble, and over the last few decades, many of our song-birds A very tall Lawson cypress hedge! have suffered a devastating decline. For example, when did you last hear a cuckoo? Yet I remember hearing and seeing them on the Cadger Road in Carryduff! (Having written that, I realise that perhaps the cuckoo is not the best example, as it prefers to parasitise other little birds’ nests!) This is happening in our lifetime - where are the hares that I used to see? The beautiful flocks of lapwing? The corncrakes I heard on warm summer evenings in Belvoir? For so many birds, large and small, the 21st century has become the worst of times. Yet, with a little more forethought and attention to their welfare, we could manage to change all that: we could make it the best of times. Let’s try! PS Can you identify the origins of the two literary quotes I adapted for this piece? Hint: Two opening sentences from classic English novels. Answers are on page 47 with the Puzzle Solutions. Tinylife Carryduff sisters, Christina Campbell and Patricia Moffett (pictured right) are taking part in the TinyLife Big Fight to raise much needed funds for TinyLife. The girls were inspired to get involved with the charity after Patricia went into premature labour almost 4 years ago with son, Ryan. Fortunately, after administering steroids to mature Ryan’s lungs in preparation for premature birth, the hospital were able to stop her labour and she went on to have Ryan at full term. ‘We decided to sign up for the boxing because my experience could have been very different had Ryan been born at 30 weeks. The hospital prepared us for his early arrival and it was heartbreaking to see what the parents of the babies in neonatal were going through’. The event will take place on 8th May in La Mon Hotel, Belfast and tickets are priced at £10 and available by contacting 02890 815050. To help Tinylife with this or any other fundraising activity, check out the events on their website www.tinylife.org.uk or ring 02890 815050

Moneyrea Primary School Comenius Forest - Moneyrea Primary is a partner in a Comenius Project involving eight different schools from across Europe. The project title is, 'Europe Beyond the Classroom; Learning Out of Doors'. Each term the children work on different mini projects, which they share with our partners. One recent activity involved our schools in the creation of a 'Comenius Forest', consisting of just eight trees, one planted in each school. In this photograph our pupils are planting a Damson tree in our Eco Garden, surrounded by the flags of our partner countries. Lights, Camera, Action! - Our children are busy rehearsing for our annual school show. This year we are taking the audience on a roller coaster ride across the small silver screen. Check us out on the 7th and 8th May in the Lyttle Memorial Hall, Moneyreagh. Tickets available from the school office 028 9044 8443. 38

PSNI Police Advice - Prevent Car Theft Since January there has been a small rise in vehicle crime in the Castlereagh area. Theft of vehicles or items from vehicles can be prevented:  Lock the doors and close windows and sun roof when you leave your car for any length of time. Never leave your vehicle unattended with the engine running.  Don't leave anything on display - even a jacket may be appealing to a thief.  Remove satellite navigation devices where possible, including the support cradle and suction pad.  If you can, leave the glove box open to show there is nothing of value in it.  An immobiliser or steering lock can help secure older cars.  Park in a secure or well lit location.  Keep your vehicle keys out of sight in your house to deter any persons who may want to enter your home to steal the vehicle. If you see anything unusual or anyone acting suspiciously around a vehicle DO NOT DELAY, Call police on 101 In a emergency or where a crime is in progress call 999. St Ita’s Primary School Clean Sweep for St Ita’s Girls - The Castlereagh Borough Council Cross Country Challenge saw primary schools’ cross country teams from all over the borough converge on Lough Moss Leisure Centre. The cross country races took place in cold, wet and testing conditions. St Ita’s girls have been performing well all year but surpassed themselves with a magnificent performance finishing 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 6th individually. Rachel ran a very impressive race, leading from the starting gun to the finishing line. Kerrie and Sophie both returned fantastic performances finishing 2nd and 3rd completing a clean sweep of the podium places for St Ita’s. Ellen finished close behind in 6th with Anna & Aoife rounding out a tremendous team performance leading to the girls winning the team prize on top of their individual triumphs. The boys ran well with Ryan finishing a strong 6th supported by Fergus, Charlie, Rory G, Joseph and Rory W, leading to a 4th place finish for the team. Congratulations to all of our cross country runners who put in so much hard work and show such great commitment throughout the year. Poet Laureate Visits St Ita’s - Belfast’s first Poet Laureate, Dr Sinéad Morrissey took time out of her busy schedule to visit St Ita’s. As Poet Laureate, Dr Morrissey will engage the public in poetry, through a series of events, community outreach to art groups, language organisations and minority groups. She has also been commissioned to produce a series of poems about Belfast. "Belfast is a city with an extraordinary literary tradition, especially in relation to poetry," Dr Morrissey said. "I am therefore hugely honoured to be appointed Belfast's first Poet Laureate, and I am excited to celebrate and explore further both the city and poetry in the year ahead." Dr Morrissey, winner of the TS Eliot poetry prize, conducted a poetry workshop with P5 pupils who spent some time writing and then performing their poetry for their classmates. P5 pupils and everyone in St Ita’s would like to thank Dr Morrissey for such a wonderful visit.

Millennium Integrated Primary School Congratulations to our principal, Mrs Mary Roulston on becoming Woman of the Year in Education at the recent Belfast Telegraph Woman of the Year awards held at the Ramada Hotel. Mrs Roulston was nominated for the award in recognition for the work she has done at Millennium IPS – growing it from a school of 10 pupils in 2000 to a growing and thriving school of 280. Her drive, dedication and focus have come together to create a positive, child-centred learning environment that embraces the ethos of integrated education. P7 were very lucky to have taken part in a 3 day ice-skating and bowl event organised by Castlereagh Borough Council at the Dundonald Ice Bowl. The children were given talks by the PSNI about Internet safety and cyber-bullying and by the Fire Service about how to stay safe in the home and what to do in case of fire. They then spent time learning to ice-skate and had a bowling competition. The children thoroughly enjoyed the 3 days and would like to thank Castlereagh Borough Council for allowing them the opportunity to take part. 42

Carr Primary School Eco Green Flag - Having achieved our Bronze and Silver Eco School Awards, Carr Primary School pupils have been working towards attaining the prestigious Green Flag which is presented to schools who have a committee made up of children who help develop action plans for the school. Children work on projects linked to Eco School topics chosen such as healthy eating, school grounds and litter. On Friday 28th February 2014 two independent assessors from the Eco Committee came to Carr Primary. After spending a morning in the school with the children, looking at their action plans and discussing their ideas and reviewing progress it was decided that they did indeed meet the high standards expected from the committee. The Green Flag was presented to the children who were delighted that all their hard work had been recognized. We would like to thank all children, staff and parents involved in the Eco Committee. Number Week - Number week in Carr Primary ran from 31st March - 4th April. All children made money boxes and collected pennies which were issued for positive behaviour and achievements in class work. The answer to the quotation puzzle in Helen Long’s article on page 38: “My opening sentence is a version of the opening of ‘Pride & Prejudice’ by Jane Austen: ‘It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.’ My last paragraph borrowed heavily from the opening sentence of ‘A Tale of Two Cities’ by Charles Dickens: ‘It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.’ ” Please mention the Carryduff Focus Magazine when contacting advertisers
