Wed 10th December
to your December magazine
Hello again everyone,
The last magazine of the year, and it’s truly in the festive spirit. Lots of our local businesses want to wish you a Happy Christmas, and to say thanks for your business in 2014 so look out for the Christmas messages dotted throughout this issue. We’ve also loads of reading for you on the Community Pages - as usual there’s lots going on. I should give a special mention to the fantastic pop up market that’s going to be taking place at the Carryduff Shopping Centre on 6th December. Just turn to the centre pages to read all about it. Carryduff is crying out for something like this at the moment, so I hope lots of you can go along with all the family and really enjoy the atmosphere. I wouldn't miss it, - hope to see you there! Continuing my revamp theme of the last few issues, I’ve been busy organising a brand new front cover for all three Local Focus titles. It’s looking good! When you get your January magazine, you may not recognise it at first, but it will still be the same little community mag on the inside! I’ll add my own good wishes here too - I hope you all have a lovely Christmas and thanks to you all (readers, advertisers, contributors and distributors) for your support for the magazine throughout 2014. Until next time....
Deirdre

A POP-UP CHRISTMAS AT CARRYDUFF SHOPPING CENTRE! SHOP LOCAL THIS CHRISTMAS AT THIS ONE DAY CHRISTMAS MARKET THAT IS RIGHT ON YOUR DOORSTEP. Excitement is building for the very first Pop Up event to be held in the Carryduff Shopping Centre on Saturday 6 December, 10am- 4pm. Pop Up Carryduff is a Castlereagh Borough Council initiative supported by the Northern Ireland Executive through the Department for Social Development. The motivation behind the event is to inject economic activity and community life back into the heart of Carryduff, encouraging both local businesses and local residents to get involved. The event will have something for all the family with a children’s activity den that will feature t-shirt printing, face painting, story-telling, clay modelling, and hand weaving. The weekly fresh food shop can be taken care of at the farmers market, with many of the food producers from the Inns Market in Newtownbreda coming along. Visitors to Inns Market will be familiar with regulars such as Passion Preserved, Kearney Blue, Cherry Valley Farm, Man Made, Go Yeast, Still Waters Fishing, McCarthy Meats and Mange Tout Patisserie. Street food vendors Jolly Pies, Matassa & Carville and Pizza Vantastica among others, will also be in attendance. As it is the festive season, we couldn’t be without a turkey or two, so we will be joined by specialist free range farm, Buchanan Turkeys. Yvonne Burke, Economic Development Officer with Castlereagh Borough Council, expresses that “We are really hoping to encourage local residents to
FOLLOW POP UP CARRYDUFF ON FACEBOOK & TWITTER FOR UPDATES:
XMAS-POPUP-ADVERT-A5-DPS.indd 2
support the event and to shop local this Christmas. With the changing face of the retail landscape, consumers are more conscious of where their food is sourced and the positive impact on the local economy of buying local. Our aim is to reinforce that ethos. Economic revitalisation is a key remit for Castlereagh Borough Council, and there has been a lack of vision and strategic direction in many suburban shopping districts as to how to differentiate themselves from mainstream shopping centres. “The importance of the shopping experience is under-rated and misunderstood by traditional retailers. Shopping is now seen as a leisure pursuit. We are hoping that the Pop Up event at Carryduff will showcase how you can tie in the weekly food shop with weekend pursuits.” There will be plenty to keep the little ones entertained in the activity den, plus street entertainers, fitness workshops, and a bicycle clinic - you can even get your Christmas shopping underway at the gift and craft collective. With the obligatory weekend specialist coffee fix and chill out zone, there really is no excuse not to shop on your door step this coming Saturday, 6 December in the heart of Carryduff Shopping Centre, 10am-4pm.

Nature Focus In another of our series of articles about our local environment, Helen Long writes about her observations of nature, right here in Carryduff
I love birdsong, but let’s face it, there’s precious little of it about in December! And yet…there is some, even at this most dark and depressing time of the year. You will probably have to listen hard to hear it, though. Robins often sing during winter, so it’s likely that you may be uplifted by hearing their thin treble wafting across the cold wintry air. The robin is such a symbol of Christmas that it seems only right that it should break into song, as well as shining out from thousands of Christmas cards! There’s another relation of the robin, however, that I also associate with this time of year - the thrush. Or should I say the thrushes? For there are two types, the songthrush and the slightly larger and paler mistle thrush. I have heard both of these birds singing in December, and once - memorably - on a lovely clear, crisp Christmas morning while I was out walking the dog just a few years ago. The other name for the mistle-thrush is the storm cock, as it is noted for singing into the teeth of a gale, often in the wintriest of conditions. We have plenty of them (both the wintry conditions and the mistle thrushes!) around Carryduff; but it is the one in Thomas Hardy’s poem that I always think of at the end of the year. ‘The Darkling Thrush’ describes how the ever-pessimistic Hardy saw only gloom and depression around him one evening at the close of the year, and indeed the close of the 19th century. But the heroic song of a thrush, ‘in blast-beruffled plume’ was the one thing in the landscape that gave him cause for cheer. It seemed to him that this bird was singing of ‘Some blessed hope whereof he knew, And I was unaware.’ I really think he had hit on something here. Nature has this wonderful way of uplifting us; of taking us out of the prosaic and mundane and transporting our minds and spirits to somewhere more elevated and enriching. William Wordsworth (the great nature poet) had the same idea, where he claimed that nature encouraged him to feel ‘a sense sublime Of something far more deeply interfused, Whose dwelling is the light of setting suns…’ And as the sun sets ever earlier this month, may I wish you all a Merry Christmas, and a blessed hope for the year ahead. 36

Movie Focus
By Peter Stevenson
AT THE CINEMA: Ouija 15 (89 mins)
Horror movies have really gone downhill in the past 15-20 years. Perhaps this is because audiences are so much cannier when it comes to understanding the tricks directors use to tingle the spine or maybe they have just been rubbish. Either way Ouija has come along, desperate to buck the trend. Supernatural phenomena, suicide, the ‘other side’, Ouija may have all these things but this does not guarantee a good movie or even a good storyline. Speaking of which: the movie begins with two young girls innocently playing with a Ouija board they have found, discovering how it works and experimenting with its effects. When the girls are given a short, sharp shock by the Ouija board, the action moves to the present day where these now adults and their circle of friends discover the Ouija board once again and slowly come to the realisation that they have awoken a dark spirit. Oh no! Olivia Cooke and Shelley Hennig head the mundane cast, they all wander surprisingly nonchalantly (for a horror movie), screaming every so often but they prove more irritating than terrifying. The only semi-interesting character is Paulina Zander (Lin Shaye); an elderly inmate of a mental asylum whom Cooke meets in a vain attempt to find out exactly what she has done and how to end the demonic spirit’s playtime. Director Stiles White (also a co-writer with Juliet Snowden) seems ambivalent or just unaware of the potential of some scenes to be truly blood-curdling, even his best attempt (the scenes with Shaye) is left awkwardly unfinished. Give me Jumanji any day! 2 / 5
On DVD: 22 Jump Street 15 (111 mins) Parodies, parodies, parodies…is parodying oneself really acceptable for an action/comedy? Well, apparently so; 22 Jump Street is so selfconscious, one half expects a word-for-word replica of 21 Jump Street. As well as lampooning itself, 22 Jump Street does actually have a story: this time our two ‘heroes’ (in the loosest sense of the word), after having infiltrated and apprehended a high school drugs ring, make the logical leap to college, again for the purposes of disbanding a narcotics gang, this time, the purveyors of new drug: WHYPHY (seriously). Despite its tendency towards the similar, this movie can boast some subtle but surprisingly insightful snippets of character development. The biggest concerns our two heroes, as they grow tired of each other’s shortfalls and idiosyncrasies. Each determined that their way is the best way to catch these particular criminals, they split-up (I use that phrase deliberately, the homoeroticism is palpable) and continue on their separate yet related missions. Both Hill and Tatum handle this aspect of the story with an air of understatement which it needs because if this connection between our heroes is not felt, the whole movie falls apart around them. Directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller and screenwriters Michael Bacall, Oren Uziel and Rodney Rothman do not stick to this rigid notion of parody, however, silliness is allowed free reign, for example, Tatum mixes up the phrase ‘carte blanche’ with actress Cate Blanchett. The movie really shines in these moments of complete stupidity (like Dumb & Dumber or any other film by the Farrelly brothers). It is so much better when this quirky stupidity is played out to its fullest extent, Jokes are always carefully tempered so it never becomes zany but they are always good enough to provide a thoroughly entertaining cop yarn. 4 / 5 40

MILLENNIUM INTEGRATED PRIMARY SCHOOL Millennium IPS had a ‘Superhero’ day to help raise money for Children in Need. All the children designed their own Superhero characters. Our P1 teacher Mrs Mathieson had the difficult task of picking a winner from each class. Well done to all the children for taking part. The whole school then took to the playground to take part in a ‘Superhero’ dance! We are delighted to have raised over £300 so far for Children in Need. To mark Anti-Bullying Week, the P4 children at MIPS did a special anti-bullying assembly for the whole school. Through songs, poems and short skits they delivered the message that bullying will not be tolerated in our school. We now have a new sign with messages about how to be a good friend as well as a ‘Friendship Stop’ for the playground so nobody will ever be left out. We will hold our annual Open Day for prospective Nursery and P1 parents on Wednesday 10th December from 9.30 – 11.00 am and 7.00 – 9.00 pm. We will have a second open day on Thursday 8th January from 9.30 – 11.00 am. You are very welcome to come and visit our school on these days. The school principal, Mrs Mary Roulston, will give her address and explain how the application. See our main advert on page 47

ST JOSEPH’S PRIMARY SCHOOL Yvonne Young and her husband John came into school to collect shoeboxes from the P5 pupils. Yvonne and John work for the Irish charity called ‘Hope’ which brings essential items to children in poorer countries in Europe and around the world. Here at St Joseph’s we thought that this would be a worthwhile charity to support coming up to Christmas. We are lucky to receive so much, not just at Christmas but throughout the year, so it is nice to think about others and how we can help them. The shoeboxes have been lovingly decorated and filled with all kinds of items, both useful things and special treats. Around the 5 th of January when the children should be receiving our boxes, we will think of them and smile!
CARR PRIMARY SCHOOL held their Harvest Service on Friday 24th October 2014. A fantastic performance from all pupils who did themselves, the staff and their parents proud with wonderful performances, singing and readings. The school would like to give a special word of thanks to Drumbo Presbyterian Church and Temple Farm and Fruit shop who supported their local primary school by lending us a variety of items to decorate our hall. It would not have been possible without your kindness. All food was donated to the Simon Community for their Lisburn Hostel and money donations went to our two sponsored children in Tanzania. Congratulations to our October pupils of the month Hannah Glenn, Maddie McAuliffe, Ruth Clarke, Chloe Agnew and Hannah Clarke. Well done and keep up the good work. (Hannah Clarke P1, pictured right). The P7 classes had a treat when they enjoyed the potatoes planted by last year’s P7 pupils. We are studying the famine and wanted to understand why Ireland became so dependent on the potato. We ate them with butter, mayonnaise or salad cream – and with some scallions. What a feast!
