to your December magazine
Hello again everyone, Welcome to another jam-packed Christmassy issue. I love doing this issue every year - all the little ‘Merry Christmas’ messages from advertisers to all of you residents just cheers me up no end. That’s when I know Christmas is really coming, and soon! This weekend, in fact, as soon as I get this issue away to print, I’m off to visit my (Christmas-mad) daughter in Edinburgh again. The Christmas market opens there this weekend so I’m sure we’ll be getting into the Christmas spirit and doing some Christmas shopping. Don’t forget about the Christmas Tree lights switch on at Eight South on 2nd December, organised by the Carryduff Regeneration Forum. Let’s bring some community spirit back to Carryduff! See you all there! The special offers below continue to take up lots of room - a really good sign of thriving local business. Please remember to take advantage! Until next time....

In many ways 2015 has been an inbetween year, with many firms offering slightly updated versions of products they launched last year – so, for example, Apple replaced the iPhone 6 with the iPhone 6S, Samsung updated the Note 4 to the Note 5 and so on. Bigger things are coming in 2016 - so what will be hogging the high-tech headlines? Let’s find out. WEARABLE COMPUTERS We’ve seen these already, of course, but devices such as the Apple Watch and Android Wear watches were just the first steps. Wearables are getting smarter, their batteries better and their apps more useful, and increased competition means they should get a lot cheaper too. And wearables aren’t just for showing off or for going to the gym: they can help monitor chronic medical conditions too. WIRELESS CHARGING Some smartphones already charge wirelessly, as do some smartwatches, but this year should see wireless charging become more mainstream: Intel’s new PC processors support it, and there’s a good chance Apple will throw its weight behind it too. The longpromised wire-free world might not be too far off. STREAMING EVERYTHING If you’re still buying CDs or DVDs
6
you’re in a shrinking minority: more and more TV, music and movies are being streamed over the internet, usually as part of subscription services such as Netflix or Amazon Prime. That trend will continue in a big way this year, with streaming firms investing heavily in new programming - so for example Amazon is spending millions to bring the Top Gear trio back to TV on its service. You’ll also see some TV channels going streaming-only, and rival channels appearing on the BBC’s iPlayer. SMARTER DIGITAL ASSISTANTS Apple’s Siri, Microsoft’s Cortana and Google Now are already pretty clever, but they’ll get smarter still this year. Apple, Microsoft and Google are spending big money on hiring artificial intelligence experts, and the goal is to make Siri and Google Now so familiar with your routine that they’ll show you the information you need before you even need it. Their voice recognition will improve too: it’s already good, but if you’ve got a strong accent you’ll know that there’s still a lot of room for improvement. SMARTER THINGS The Internet of Things has been massively hyped, but it should start to deliver on its promises in 2016. Smart plugs, smart lights, smart cameras, smart TVs, smart locks… if
it’s possible to connect it to the internet and control it from a phone, somebody will do it. The automated home might just be on its way, a mere 90 years after it was first predicted. PRIVACY WORRIES The problem with letting your digital assistants organise everything is that your digital assistants end up knowing everything about you - and possibly sharing that information with marketers or other third parties. The more we let our devices organise our lives and our homes, the more likely a really big privacy scandal is likely to strike. AD BLOCKING Trouble’s brewing on the internet over advertising. Invasive ads and privacy-invading advertising trackers are making some websites unusable, and more and more of us are blocking those ads - which means the websites aren’t making any money. This issue has been bubbling under for a few years but now that ad-blocking tools are available on mobile devices - something that wasn’t the case until the end of this year - it’s going to be a really big deal in 2016. Images left to right: Netflix on a TV; Samsung Gear 2 smartwatches; Nest wireless camera; Cortana digital assistant on Windows Phone

• 2.5kg smoked gammon joint
• 1 onion, peeled and quartered • 1 large carrot, peeled and chopped • 2 fresh bay leaves, plus extra to garnish • Few black peppercorns • 1 tbsp whole cloves • 3 tbsp shredless orange marmalade, warmed • 2 tbsp runny honey • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard • 3 tbsp light soft brown sugar • Orange wedges, to garnish
30
Place the gammon joint in a large deep pan with the onion, carrot, bay leaves and peppercorns. Pour over enough cold water to cover the joint. Bring to the boil then skim off any scum from the surface using a slotted spoon. Reduce the heat, cover and leave to simmer for 1 hours, topping up the water level as needed. Preheat the oven to 180°C, fan 160°C, gas 4. Lift out the gammon from the pan and place in a foil-lined roasting tin (discard the cooking liquid). Leave to cool for 10 minutes. Cut away the skin from the gammon, leaving a thin layer of fat and score the fat into diamonds. Stud the scored fat with the cloves in an even pattern. Mix together the marmalade, honey, mustard and sugar and spoon all over the gammon fat. Roast in the oven for 40-45 minutes, basting regularly with the glaze and pan juices until the fat is golden. Serve hot or cold garnished with fresh bay leaves and orange wedges. Add 1 tsp each ground cumin and ground coriander or a splash of Tabasco sauce to the glaze for a bit of extra spice, if liked.

Nature Focus In another of a new series of articles about our local environment, Helen Long writes about her observations of nature a bit further afield, outside Carryduff. This month Helen visits Dromara....
It was a standing joke in the Lisburn school where I taught, that at the first flake of snow, all the children from Dromara Legananny Dolmen were excused class to get the bus home immediately, before conditions worsened up the mountain! They were even given special dispensation to arrive late every morning as well! All of that has imbued the village of Dromara with a sense of mystique in my fertile imagination. Yet until today, although it’s barely 15 miles from Carryduff, I had no real contact with it—apart from knowing that my grandfather had taught woodwork there long ago. But today, I can boast of being fully in the Dromara groove! By the way, the name means Ridge of Heifers! It’s not so much what’s there now, but what used to be there, that gives this little hill village significance. Think Lagan. Think Linen. Think Mills. A century ago this quiet place was a bustling, thriving community, servicing Belfast’s burgeoning linen industry, with around 200 in employment, mostly local people but with a few specialists from Belgium and Japan. They even liked to boast that they had the highest bleach green in the province! And there used to be a corn mill, a saw mill, a potato mill and a beetling mill as well!! Now contrast this positive image with one from the opposite end of the scale. Think the Great Famine of 1845-9. This area bears testimony to the little famine fields that were abandoned due to the repeated failure of the potato crop. And the population had to leave their land, many probably for the journey to America…never again to return. So it could be said that Dromara’s history mirrors that of our island. If you’re interested in rivers, you will see the mighty Lagan in its The youthful Lagan infancy here, as it dashes from its source near the summit of Slieve Croob. I actually had to climb over a gate to get the photo!! There’s more for the historian too, as you can head on up beyond Finnis and see Legananny Dolmen, thought to be 5,000 years old. Slieve Croob itself rises to 1,755 feet above sea level, and its name means Mountain of the Hoof. There is much for the animal-lover to admire, with wonderful sweeps of hillside grazed by flocks of contented sheep. And fittingly, the famous tractor man, Harry Ferguson was born not far away! In Millennium Year, it had a visit from Mary McAleese, during her time as President of the Irish Republic - apparently she has family associations with the village! And if all the history gets too much, you can always call in at one of the public houses or at Helen Long the friendly, hospitable café for refreshment. Go on, give Dromara a try! 34

Forestside has joined with the Belfast Nashville Songwriters Festival to launch an exciting new project aimed at rewarding excellence for young singer songwriters in local schools. As an important part of the community, Forestside is already heavily involved with many different projects in local schools and this new initiative is an exciting new addition to the opportunities we provide for schools and young people. At Forestside, we are very aware of the fantastic talent we have in Northern Ireland for song writing and we have already seen some amazing talent on mall. So,
we are delighted that the School Song Challenge gives young singer songwriters the chance to prepare & showcase their material in front of the public. The ‘open mic’ sessions will take place every Saturday from 16th January 2016 to 20th February 2016. This is a perfect opportunity for young songwriters to perform their music. Songs can be in any style or genre. The only rule is that songwriters sing at least one song they have written or co-written. Judges will consider performance and vocals together with the quality of song writing. With great prizes available, the best three acts will also be
invited to take part in a special concert, as part of the March 2016 Belfast Nashville Songwriters Festival. This is a contest that might just open the right doors, and get your songs heard! Forestside will also hold a charity concert on mall in April on a Sunday evening to a live audience - an opportunity for all entrants to perform their songs once again. Entrants must be pupil(s) at a local school and aged up to 18. Any schools or pupils interested in taking part should contact margaret@forestside.co.uk or ring 028 90 494994.

MILLENNIUM INTEGRATED PRIMARY SCHOOL Our Primary One children are very excited to have been chosen to take part in the BBC ‘One Show’ Christmas Nativity play, ‘The Landlord’s Cat’. We will be part of a group of schools from around the UK and each section will joined together to make the Nativity play. Our children will be doing the opening section of the play. Filming will take place shortly and the boys and girls have been busy rehearsing and have worked very hard. Keep an eye out near Christmas time (mid-December) to see our lovely P1 angels and shepherds! Watch out also for interviews with some of the P1 parents and see what kind of a make-over the Street Barber (Michael Douglas) gives to our P1 teachers! What a fantastic effort by the boys and girls at Millennium to celebrate Children in Need day. Dressed as Superheroes or in spots, the children managed to collect over £360 for such a great cause. We are delighted here at MIPS to have finally moved into our new building extension. For the past 8 months or so, builders have been on site creating a wonderful new office facility, entrance hall, staffroom, music room and medical room. We now also have changing rooms for the boys and girls to use and a fabulous new library with lots of super books to choose from.
CANCER FUND FOR CHILDREN A hamper filled with wonderful toys is up for grabs for the lucky school that raises the most money through Cancer Fund for Children’s Presents for Pounds Christmas appeal. The idea behind the idea is that rather than pupils or their parents buying expensive presents for teachers, nursery leaders or class mates they make a donation to Cancer Fund for Children instead and support local families living with cancer in the process. Cancer Fund for Children’s Schools Fundraiser, Rebecca Spiers, explained: “Christmas is a time for giving, togetherness and joy but for some families who are living with cancer, the festive season exaggerates all of the negative issues they are already dealing with such as isolation, loneliness and financial struggle. Cancer Fund for Children strives to help families through initiatives like our Home Heating Grant which alleviates the extra financial strain this time of year brings. We also hold residentials at our Narnia log cabin, grottos and festive events tailored to our families’ needs. Cancer Fund for Children gets less than one per cent of its income from the government. Without campaigns like Presents for Pounds (kindly sponsored by Smyths Toys) we would never be able to provide these vital support services. By making a donation to Cancer Fund for Children it will also take the pressure off trying to find a present for the teacher or nursery leader. I am happy to visit schools to chat to pupils and staff about the campaign and the top fundraising school will get a lovely hamper jam-packed with toys. Schools - to register - email Rebecca@cancerfundforchildren.com or ring 028 9080 5599. 44

‘Digital Schools of Distinction’, a flagship awards programme which promotes, recognises and encourages best practice use of technology in primary schools has presented St Joseph’s PS with the prestigious award of Digital School of Distinction. We are the first school in Northern Ireland to receive this award which was presented to Mr Donnelly on Wednesday 11th November. On accepting the award Mr Donnelly paid tribute to the great work done by Mrs Knowles ( ICT Co-ordinator) and all the Staff in developing the skills and expertise of our pupils in using ICT. Supported by HP Inc., Hewlett Packard Enterprise and Microsoft, the Digital Schools of Distinction Award has been developed to help schools to further integrate technology into the classroom. The initiative aims to recognise best in class practices and build on the progress already made, by providing a pathway and resources for schools who are seeking to do more with technology. The programme also recognises those who achieve excellence and supports the efforts of schools and teachers in making the best use of technology in the learning environment. HP Inc., Hewlett Packard Enterprise and Microsoft are providing support to the programme for five years, to include a financial commitment of £100,000 in the first year as well as the provision of practical support and resources. Principal Dominic Donnelly said “Pupils, staff, governors and parents of St Joseph’s, Carryduff are delighted to receive this prestigious award. In St Joseph’s we place great emphasis on developing the children’s ability to use ICT judiciously and effectively. They learn how to use technology to handle, interpret and communicate information, to solve problems, pose questions and to be creative. In essence, our vision is to ensure that the children have the confidence and abilities they will require to be successful in a rapidly evolving technological world.”
