Welcome

to your February magazine

Contents

Hello again everyone,

Articles & Features:

Here we are again with another jam packed issue - lots of Valentine’s offers and community info to keep you entertained. It’s been a busy few weeks in our house - my son has started a new job just outside Manchester so we’ve had lots of planning to do over the Christmas holidays for his move over. The contents of a student bedroom don't stretch very far in an unfurnished two bedroom apartment, so we’ve had to do loads of shopping and ordering on the internet. Who knew that mattresses can arrive vacuum packed and rolled up into a tiny spiral, then miraculously unfurl and expand over the following few hours? Well, you learn something new everyday! Thanks to all those who entered our competition for cinema tickets last month. As expected, we had lots of entries - the names of the lucky winners are on page 37. I’d like to give a special mention to the new monthly Farmer’s Market in Moneyreagh, organised by the Moneyreagh & District Community Association. If you’d like to take a stall at the market to sell your wares, then get in touch with the organisers (details on page 41). Until next time....

Our sense of smell is the most powerful of all our senses - and that means we’re quick to notice if something doesn’t smell too good. Damp, pets and perfumes can all create unwanted odours in our homes, but the good news is that there are lots of devices that can clear the air. Damp is one of the most distinctive unwanted odours, and it can be serious: damp can cause respiratory problems, especially in young children and the elderly. It’s usually caused by inadequate ventilation, overenthusiastic showering or drying clothes indoors, especially in winter, and you can banish it with a dehumidifier. A dehumidifier sucks moisture out of the air and puts it in a tank, and some models can be installed permanently with a drain tube to take the water outside. Don’t waste your time with little gelpack dehumidifiers: electric ones can cost as little as £50, although for a typical home you’d be better off with one of the very many models costing around £100. Those ones are capable of handling 10 litres of water before it’s time to empty them; smaller, cheaper ones need emptied much more frequently. If the unwanted odours are from

6

dust, smoke or other small particles, an air purifier such as the Vax HEPA 2 Air Purifier (around £150) can help. The HEPA bit is important: it’s short for high-efficiency particulate air, and it’s an international standard for air cleaning gadgets. If it isn’t HEPA it might not be very good. You’ll also find HEPA-accredited vacuum cleaners from the likes of Vax and Dyson, which are particularly good for houses with pets. If you’ve seen advertising breaks recently you’ve probably seen ads for devices such as the Air Wick Freshmatic, which regularly release puffs of fragrance to make your room smell nicer. You can pick up Freshmatic bases the bits that do the puffing - for around £6 for two, and refills are around £6 to £12 for a pack of four. The problem with air fresheners, of course, is that they mask odours rather than get rid of them. If you’re dealing with stubborn odours, such as the ones left on furniture by wet dogs or from food smeared on the sofa by small children, then a dedicated cleaning gadget might help. There are two kinds to consider: carpet and upholstery cleaners, and steam cleaners.

As you’d expect, carpet and upholstery cleaners are designed to clean fabrics and carpets. Vax’s Rapide (around £129) and Bissell’s Cleanview use jets of water and detergent to clean and then suck the liquid back in again, and the results can be great provided, that is, that the fabric’s colour doesn’t run. Always try a small area first just in case, and look for anti-allergen detergents. The second option, a steam cleaner, can clean almost anything - but the steaming process does leave fabric wet for quite a while afterwards, so it’s best done on a warm day. Steam cleaners are incredibly cheap, with decent ones from as little as £14, and even award-winning models such as the H20 X5 mop and multipurpose cleaner come in at around £80. Such devices are particularly good for people with allergies or people with very young children, as the cleaning is chemical-free, and they can also be used for dull tasks such as removing wallpaper and in some cases, cleaning the oven too. Images left to right: Dehumidifier (not branded); Vax HEPA vacuum cleaner; Air Wick Freshmatic Base; Bissell CleanView carpet cleaner

Local lad loses an incredible 6 stone and now aims to help others. Local lad Lee McCrudden (18) has completely exceeded his own expectations by shedding a whopping 90lbs in a matter of months! Back in 2012, Lee joined his local Slimming World Lee, before group and from day one, has never looked back. "I had tried everything. Nothing seemed to work for me. But then, I joined my local Slimming World group and to my surprise, the weight started to fly off. Not only did I collect my stone and a half award in my first month but my family and friends started to see a huge difference in me.” Lee explains.

Lee, after

"It was much easier than I expected to make healthy choices. It wasn't a case of ever going without, but simply just making small changes to the things I already enjoyed such as swapping fatty convenience foods to a simple homemade recipe. The encouragement I got from the group each week really kept me going." Over the course of the next 6 months, Lee managed to reach a weight loss total of 6 stone 5 lbs and became a Target Member in his group. When the annual Young Slimmer of the Year Award came around, Lee was voted through by his group and made it to National Finals at Head Office. Lee says “I've now achieved something I thought was impossible. From here on out, the sky is the limit!” Lee has now gone on to become Slimming World’s newest consultant. Anyone who wishes to lose weight - whatever their age - and wants to know more about the difference Slimming World can make is more than welcome to come along to Lee's group at The Ivanhoe Hotel every Wednesday at 7:30pm or call Lee on 07738 014448 14

Next time you’re sitting in a traffic jam, or waiting at the lights, or on a motorway even, take a little look around you and – especially if it’s during a dark commute home – I’m willing to wager you’ll be surrounded by countless illuminated, bowed heads of motorists checking their phones. You can spot them easily, like rule-breaking beacons. With music streaming services like Spotify working through car audio systems, social media streams constantly pinging away with notifications, not to mention text messages and emails, the temptation to not touch the phone is too hard for most to resist. Can you honestly say that you’ve never touched your phone while driving? I can’t. British Car Auctions recently quizzed 445 motorists and 95 per cent of them said they’d seen another driver using a mobile phone. Some 82 per cent of them had seen someone texting or emailing too and 42 per cent admitted to doing it themselves. The official advice is to turn it off, but the problem with that is phones have become intrinsically linked to our cars.

22

Most modern models offer Bluetooth connectivity that lets you take calls at the wheel, stream music from your handset, while some even let you access the web from the car using your phone’s signal. While I can’t deny all these features are handy, could it be the case that car manufacturers are sending out the wrong message? Are they condoning the use of a mobile phone behind the wheel by implementing all this technology? A report from Canada found drivers talking on handsfree devices were ‘far more likely to make errors on the road’. And, come on, admit it, when you’re having a conversation on handsfree are you REALLY paying attention properly? I contacted the Association of Chief Police Officers to ask them what would happen to a driver who had an accident while talking, perfectly legally, on a handsfree kit. A spokesman said the likelihood was that the driver would be prosecuted for driving without due care and attention or, in more extreme cases, for dangerous driving. And it’s already happened. One

case in 2008 involved lorry driver Mervyn Richmond, 49, who had been talking to his mother for 23 minutes using Bluetooth in his cab when he ran into back of a Transit van, killing its passenger. He was jailed for four-and-a-half years for dangerous driving. Roger Vincent, of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, told The Daily Mail at the time: ‘When you are using any mobile while driving you are four times more likely to have an accident.’ FOUR times. So here’s my idea. I think it’s time for a manufacturer to introduce a device that stops your phone working when the engine is on. A sort of enforced airplane mode that means no calls, texts, emails or data can be received, but music can still be played if it’s plugged in. It would take a brave manufacturer to make the move, but marketed correctly it could be a winner. With mobile phone use behind the wheel increasing, despite the threats of points and fines, now has to be the time to take drastic measures. But is there a car maker brave enough to make the move first? Who knows… What do you think? Tweet me @CarDealerEd and let me know.

• 150g baby new potatoes • 2 tsp black peppercorns • 2 x 250g rib eye steaks, trimmed of excess fat • 2 tsp olive oil • 3 tbsp redcurrant jelly • 3 tbsp red wine • 1 tsp cornflour blended with 1tbsp cold water • 15g butter • 2 tsp fresh chopped parsley • Steamed baby carrots, mange tout and peas, to serve

Sirloin, fillet or rump steak can be used in place of the rib eye. Make sure both steaks are an even thickness and always bring the steaks to room temperature for about 15 minutes before cooking. Resting the steaks for a few minutes after cooking will also help to ensure they are meltingly tender.

32

Cook the baby new potatoes in a pan of lightly salted water for 10-15 minutes until just tender. Meanwhile, crush the peppercorns coarsely using a pestle and mortar or the end of a rolling pin. Press firmly over both sides of the steaks. Set a griddle pan over a medium heat to preheat. Brush both sides of the steaks with oil. Place the steaks on the hot griddle pan and cook over a high heat for 1 minute on each side until seared. Reduce the heat and continue cooking for a further 2-4 minutes on each side until the steaks are cooked to your liking. Remove the steaks and cover and leave to rest for 2-3 minutes. Place the redcurrant jelly and red wine in a small pan and heat gently until the jelly has completely dissolved. Stir in the cornflour mixture and simmer for a further minute until slightly syrupy. Drain the potatoes, toss with the butter and parsley and season to taste. Transfer the steaks to warmed plates and spoon over the sauce. Serve with the potatoes and steamed vegetables.

February isn’t quite spring, but there’s still plenty to celebrate because our local National Trust gardens are once again open for business. Forget the telly and the Internet, when you really want to get inspired by Nature you need to be out there amongst it. Obviously, you also need to be dressed for the part, which was how Wellygate came about.

from my fondness for saving money. We went into town for some sealant and on the way back we detoured to the National Trust, where I gallantly lent Anne my wellies and trusted to my weatherproof boots.

rhubarb and, thanks to them, I saw my first tayberry in their garden. Villagers had been invited to pop up the following day if they wanted any cuttings and seeds, or to buy some of their stock. Next morning at 10 o’clock sharp we trundled up the lane (there are no proper roads), Anne carrying a tin of home baked scones. As we rounded the bend we joined a trail of neighbours who had all decided to put in an appearance – an event somewhere between community spirit and plant envy, with a whiff of the Boxing Day sales about it. There were people already milling about in the garden, secateurs and plastic bags in hand. Anne delivered the scones, while I went on a plant hunt worthy of the Bolithos. February is not the ideal time to take cuttings, and I’m not sure I agree with one neighbour’s advice of, “If in doubt, plant out,” but I’m delighted to have 10 rosemary cuttings in the house. Thanks to the cineole compound in our Rosmarinus officinalis, and along with our new rhubarb plant, what better way to remember your neighbours?

Nature Focus In another of our series of articles about our local environment, Helen Long writes about her observations of nature, right here in Carryduff

Have you ever wondered about the names of our streets and avenues in Carryduff? I mean, their meanings and how they came to be chosen. To begin with the obvious topic of religion, there are the predictable Church Road and Manse Road; indeed I discovered that there are lots of Manse Roads in the Greater Belfast, Bangor & Lisburn areas!

1 Sheets + Overs LOC85972 Carryduff Magazine Sig Back

What about some of the older parts such as Frankhill Crescent and Annavale Park? Do you live there? If so do you never wonder who Anna and Frank actually were, and if they were connected to each another in any way at all? I have only lived in the area for 43 years, so there’s lots that I still don’t know. I like to think the ‘hill’ and ‘vale’ in these names reflect our landscape of drumlins. And then there is the Carryduff aristocracy, as evidenced in Queensfort, Queensway, Queensdale, Queens Crescent and Baronscourt. Again they have me wondering which queen we are talking about here; and even whether she was Irish or British. After all, the fort, or rath, is very ancient, so if the queen relates to that she would have been native Irish. Or is it just that we like to think we have a connection with the nobility? Marlborough and Blenheim Parks are two more cases in point. The loughs are well represented, though how the specific ones were selected I cannot tell. I imagine the late Professor AE Muskett OBE would have smiled if he had seen the size of the housing development named in his honour. I am not aware of his having any military connections, though the name, along with the similar development across the road at Winchester, might give the casual visitor cause to question whether the natives were friendly or not!! Finally, I have a weakness for the gentler, more rural labels, such as Hollygate, Oakwood and Hawthorn, although if you were to look for mature oak trees in Carryduff, you would be sadly disappointed. So much of Ireland’s native timber went to build the ships that defeated Napoleon at Trafalgar - a long way from Carryduff in space and time! Helen Long To add to Helen’s article, and according to Wikipedia, the name ‘Carryduff‘ means Black Hugh’s Quarter ( Ceathrú Aodha Dhuibh in Irish) and one of the earliest references to the village in 1622 refers to Carrow-Hugh-Duffe. The village formed where 6 roads and a river crossed, and is the site of the ancient Queen's Fort rath.

Movie Focus

By Peter Stevenson

AT THE CINEMA: The Theory of Everything 12A (123 mins) 27 years! It‘s been 27 years since the first publication of Stephen Hawking’s seminal book, A Brief History of Time which, all at once, brought the more complex aspects of physics and quantum physics to the masses; spread the word about Hawking’s own ground-breaking theories; and established him as a household name, ingrained in popular culture. Of course, not only has Professor Hawking broken academic thresholds, he has faced, what many of us would consider the insurmountable challenge of motor neurone disease. Now, based on the memoirs of Hawking’s first wife Jane, a biopic spanning almost 30 years (from his studying for his PhD to his first flirting with celebrity) is released, focusing on the Hawkings’ struggles, victories, setbacks and failures, both professional and personal. At the centre of this heartfelt and poignant picture are the performances of Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones who, as the Hawkings, give polar opposite but startlingly good performances. Redmayne’s gradual deterioration as he is gripped by this terrible condition is astounding. But Jones’ performance is the emotional heart of this story. She is a woman obviously deeply in love with her husband but outside issues push her to the end of her tether. Director James Marsh handles each aspect of the tale with great sensitivity, allowing us to become absorbed in the more stylised, fantastical scenes (Jane and Stephen dancing on a floodlit bridge, for example), all the while knowing what will come. Marsh handles it deftly, showing Jane to be a person of Herculean strength, both physically and emotionally while Stephen, except when he is at his lowest ebb, is portrayed as a great wit, allowing this movie to be surprisingly uplifting, despite its heavy subject matter. 4 / 5

On DVD: The Boxtrolls PG (97 mins) Cute…it ain’t, lovable…it ain’t, cuddly…it ain’t; and yet The Boxtrolls tugs at heartstrings in a way which would usually be incredulous. Our heroes inhabit the town of Cheesebridge and, according to urban myth, are spooky, nocturnal monsters, preying on children and…cheese! But one child, by the name of Eggs (Isaac Hampstead Wright) who was taken and raised by said boxtrolls is determined to change his guardians’ reputation and will do so thanks to some unforeseen events… I won’t give away any more of the story save to say that it is surprisingly entertaining and, believe it or not, emotionally charged. Moving on from the plot, the most striking element of this movie is the somewhat grotesque and even macabre style of animation. Where Pixar aim for realism and Dreamworks for stylised cutesiness, Laika’s Studios, the team behind The Boxtrolls, have chosen to go with a pseudo-Hallowe’en style of animation which, while aesthetically skilful, subtly takes a backseat, allowing the sometimes twisted plot to shine. As far as star power goes, The Boxtrolls packs a hefty punch, with stars such as Ben Kingsley, Toni Collette and even Simon Pegg lending their voices to the titular heroes and the human meanies (Kingsley plays Snatcher, an exterminator hired to eradicate the boxtrolls). But again, the cast is by no means of paramount importance. As we have seen with the animation, the plot takes centre stage and it should because it is the movie’s greatest asset and without it, the movie disintegrates. Directors Graham Annable and Anthony Stacchi seem to understand this however and, as a result, have definitely made a movie of which Alan Snow (on whose book the movie is based) can be proud. 3 / 5 38

We offered prizes for girls and for boys. We raised almost £200 and we would like to say a big thank you to everyone who bought tickets. MILLENNIUM INTEGRATED PRIMARY SCHOOL We had a very busy time in the run up to Christmas with Nativity plays, Christmas poetry readings and our Carol Service. The children performed brilliantly and we are very proud of them all. Our school choir have been busy rehearsing for two major events. Our music teacher, Mrs Ballard has entered the children in the BBC Radio Ulster School Choir of the Year and they have managed to get through to the Co. Down finals as one of the top six schools. The county final will be held at Assumption Grammar School on 25th February. The choir have also been rehearsing at the Ramada Hotel for the upcoming Peace Proms with Cross Border Orchestra Ireland. The Peace Proms is a musical and cultural celebration and provides a unique platform for young people to showcase their talent while promoting peace, unity and tolerance through music. They will be singing with other choirs from schools across Northern Ireland. We wish the choir and Mrs Ballard the very best of luck for these two performances. Not to be outdone by the choir, Mrs Magee, our P4 teacher has entered the Top: Abigail Carson (sport), children from P4 into the Lagan Festival of Speech, Music, Drama and Art at Katie Morgan Weir (courage) the Lyric Theatre and the Belfast Musical Festival of Music Speech and Below Ben Labourn (the Arts) Drama at the Kings Hall. The P4 children will be taking part in the Choral Speaking part of the festivals. The festivals will take place at the end of February and the beginning of March. This is the first time Millennium IPS has entered such competitions and we would like to wish the children well with their performance.
