new year new you for 2015 Most people at this time of the year decide to join a gym, it’s something to do with wanting that better self image. For a moment the motivation is there, the belief is there, the action is there, so they fill in the form, or pay online.

Reality

If most people are honest, this idea of a new self only lasts for about 3 weeks, then the reality of what it takes to reach that goal sets in. The motivation fades and the initial belief is drowned by the lact of committment. Is this you?

Welcome To A New Type Of Fitness

The Academy Of Strength offer a unique type of training that combines community, effective fitness programming and real results that make a real difference in each members life.

Community

We train together and motivate each other, no one cares about your gym dress code, your weight or size, or how much weight you can lift, all we care about is, when you show up you give everything you have, and that you encourage others to finish the workout and reach their goals.

Effective Fitness Programming, Real Results

Our type of training is done in groups, we work with anyone, even if you have an injury, we can help strengthen your weak back, sore arm or dodgy knees. If you don’t believe us, come down and chat to any of our members about the effect our training has on their lives. We help with - Cardiovascular Respiratory Endurance - Stamina - Strength - Flexibility Power - Speed - Coordination - Agility - Balance - Accuracy

to your January magazine

Hello again everyone,

Happy New Year! Do you like my new front cover design? With January traditionally a time for new beginnings, I thought it was the perfect issue to use it for the first time. Let me know what you think. This issue is jam packed with special offers - just look at the list below. Probably the most we’ve ever had. Make good use of them - if you make New Year resolutions, resolve to use our local businesses whenever possible. You know it makes sense! And remember to enter the Movie House competition - three pairs of cinema tickets are up for grabs. Last year’s competition was really popular, with the largest number of entries for any competition I’ve run, and I’m expecting the same this year. If you’re not in, you cant win! Until next time....

That's What Friends are for In 2010 Benny went along to her GP who advised her to lose weight for health reasons. Shelagh, her friend, happened to phone her later that day and they both decided to join their local Slimming World group that evening. After receiving a warm, friendly and caring welcome they discovered Food Optimising - too generous to be called a diet. They followed the Extra Easy plan - both saying it was so easy to follow and they were never hungry. Shelagh was amazed and totally hooked when she discovered that she could still have her Double Decker bar and count it as her syns! 4 years on they have lost an amazing 12 stones and 4lbs combined. Slimming World has changed their lives completely and they are both healthier and happier. Benny and Shelagh attend their Slimming World group in the Ivanhoe Hotel in Carryduff every Thursday night Benny, before and after offering their invaluable help & support to other members at Image Therapy. Their consultant, Alice, is extremely proud of their fantastic achievements. If you would like to start your weight loss journey with this group, a warm welcome awaits every Thursday at the Ivanhoe. Shelagh, before and after

18

Mum of two, Briege McDermott is jumping for joy with her incredible weight loss success. Briege, 32, has credited her local Slimming World group for giving her the help, support and advice she needed to drop 5 stone and slim from a size 20 to a size 10 within the year.

Briege "It was talking that first step of joining that I found hardest, but I soon realised it was the best decision I could've made. Straight away, Johnny, my consultant, made me feel so welcome and re assured me, by sharing his own journey and reminding me that I wasn't alone & he was going to do everything to help me achieve all my weight loss goals - and I did!" With her amazing weight loss, Briege soon found her health had improved dramatically and told us "my weight loss meant the ordinary day-to-day tasks, which I once struggled with and found a challenge, much easier and more enjoyable"! Slimming World is the UK's leading weight loss organisation and it prides itself on the ability to fill up and slim down. "I loved the fact I was able to try delicious new meals that suited the whole family and there was always loads of food that I could have. I never felt hungry and I could still enjoy a drink at the weekend with the girls which made it perfect". "Briege is an inspiration to our Ramada group. As her consultant, I’m extremely proud and look forward to helping Briege maintain her new found freedom while helping all our members achieve their dream weight" Johnny said. Movie Focus

By Peter Stevenson

AT THE CINEMA: Interstellar 12A (166 mins)

1 Sheets + Overs LOC84822 Carryduff Magazine Sig 18 Back

It doesn’t really matter what calibre of movie Christopher Nolan creates anymore; he will always be known as the director who took the reins of the Batman movie franchise and made it successful once again. He keeps going and his latest project is Interstellar. We are presented with a dour and downbeat prediction of the state of the Earth in the not-too-distant future, where droughts and famines are slowly spelling the end for the human race. What to do? Nolan suggests, with the aid of some pretty hefty astrophysics, that a crew of astronauts, headed by Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) and Brand (Anne Hathaway), must travel through a wormhole (a tear in the space/time continuum) to search for a new home for humanity. At almost three hours in length, this movie must fight hard to keep the viewer’s attention and it is really a decision each member of the audience must make as to whether or not it succeeds. I know I am in a tiny minority but, for me, it was dry, long winded, overly complicated and far too long. It really does have a stellar cast (pardon the pun) including Matt Damon and Michael Caine, among others and they flex their acting muscles with what can be construed as a somewhat shaky script (Brand’s speech about ‘love transcending space and time…’ is cringeworthy). Visually however, it shines: from the panoramic views of space, to the sandy tundra of the American mid-west, the immensely detailed photography strikes a fine balance of being both realistic and fantastical. There is so much more I could analyse from this gargantuan movie, but the important thing is whether you find a long sci-fi epic like this one an example of quality over quantity or vice versa. Personally, I choose the latter. 3 / 5

On DVD: The Inbetweeners 2 15 (96 mins) In spite of the vow they would never do a sequel to the 2011 smash hit The Inbetweeners Movie, the cast and crew have reunited for the second instalment, this time moving the action from the resort of Malia on the Greek island of Crete to ‘the land down under’. When we join three of our four heroes: Will (Simon Bird), Simon (Joe Thomas) and Neil (Blake Harrison), they are having a less than stellar time on their first meeting post-school (except for the holiday in the prequel). After receiving word from Jay (James Buckley), apparently having the time of his life in Australia, they decide to visit their old mate. Unfortunately, when they arrive, they discover that Jay has not been exactly truthful… Will is given the most to do (perhaps fittingly for an active narrator), including the introduction of the main female character, Katie (Emily Berrington). In a complete stroke of luck, Will discovers his old school friend in a Sydney nightclub and, surprise, surprise; she becomes the object of his (misguided) affections. Of course, this is a set-up for one of Will’s classic rants; Bird is so good at this, the audience can see his rage boil as he tries desperately to suppress it to no avail. It is unfortunate that not all the jokes are comedy gold, for example Neil’s killing a dolphin is just not funny but his success at single-handedly shutting down a water park is both completely disgusting and utterly hilarious. Simon and Jay continue their relationships from the first movie as Simon tries to escape from his girlfriend but ends up proposing! Jay, on the other hand, has been dumped and it is Buckley’s ability to convey real inner pain behind the lies and bravado which constantly endears him to the audience despite the fact that this is nothing new. They may be getting a bit long-in-the-tooth to be inbetweeners but I say roll on number 3! 4 / 5 36

ST JOSEPH’S PRIMARY SCHOOL Mr Donnelly, Niall and Megan were invited to attend the Keep Northern Ireland Tidy 60th Jubilee event which was held at the Glass House in Stormont Estate. Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful oversees the work of a number of subsidiary bodies including Eco schools. St Joseph’s had been nominated as a Case Study school by Eco Schools because of its commitment to developing environmental programmes. Megan and Niall were representing the Eco Committee and they were able to share details of their activities with the invited guests who included executive ministers, media personalities and board members and staff from Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful. BBC Radio Ulster visited our school to broadcast live at the beginning of December. Reporter Louise Cullen interviewed Mr Donnelly, Evie, Angus and Eden from P7 about all the environmental activities taking place in St Joseph’s. They sounded great! The children in Primary Five continue to enjoy their Mandarin language lessons with Yang. She has also passed on lots of interesting facts about Chinese culture and way of life. The children are enjoying their topic and we look forward to hearing their new language skills at an Assembly later in the year.

THANKS FOR GOOD SAMARITAN’S HELP 88 year old Carryduff resident Denise May was walking along Church Road when she, in her own words ‘had a funny turn’ and fell. She was a bit dazed and confused at first, and she lay on the pavement while people and cars passed her by. Eventually a young man stopped his car and got out to see if Denise was alright. He helped her up and drove her back home. In the stress of the moment, Denise forgot to ask his name, but she would like to thank him through the Focus for his help that day.

MILLENNIUM INTEGRATED PRIMARY SCHOOL We are thrilled to have been involved in a couple of award ceremonies recently. The first was On 28 th November last when three children from Millennium IPS were presented with awards at Lagan Valley Island in Lisburn for the SEELB Outstanding Achievement Awards. The school Netball team were presented with the Sport (Team) for their recent success. The team, for the second year in a row, won the Belfast Schools Netball League and finished a very creditable second in the Northern Ireland finals. Abigail Carson collected the award on behalf of the team. Ben Labourn received the award for The Arts (Individual) for his involvement in both music and theatre both in and out of school. He entertained the audience with a wonderful rendition of ‘Grenade’ by Bruno Mars. Our final award of the evening went to Katie MorganWeir for Child of Courage in the Castlereagh Borough Council Area. Katie has achieved so much despite many challenges and adversities in her life. Well done to all our award winners. We are very proud of you all. Our Primary Two children are learning all about toys and, as part of their topic Nanny Austin from the National Trust at Mount Stewart came to school to tell them about toys from the Victorian era. She brought with her a selection of toys that the children living in Mount Stewart played with such as marbles, a jack-in-the-box, teddy bears, Russian dolls and a spinning top. The children were amazed at the different types of toys, especially the doll that had come from Paris in 1920 and had belonged to one of the girls who lived in Mount Stewart. They really enjoyed the chance to be able to play with the same toys that children played with about 100 years ago. Please mention the Carryduff Focus Magazine when contacting advertisers

Foot pain. Cured. Get your Bio-mechanical Assessment & Pressure Plate Analysis That’s for just £15 85%! off But HURRY offer ends 26th January 2015

Think you may have Plantar Fasciitis*? Take up the Good Feet challenge and you could be pain free after just one appointment… Around 1 in 10 people in Belfast (usually aged between 40 and 60) will get plantar fasciitis* at some point in their lives I was suffering from sore heels and Achilles and so I decided to book a foot assessment to see if it would improve the pain. The factual assessment provided me with the detail of what was causing the pain and Good Feet provided a tailored solution of what was required to correct this. Since Jan 2014 I’ve been pain free solely due to the correct assessment and the solution provided by Good Feet, as well as their great customer service - Thank you to everyone involved in making this happen.” Keith Bell, Belfast

So what’s included in the bio-mechanical and pressure plate analysis? A talk-through of any existing aches or niggles (including looking for any signs of plantar fasciitis), before a foot scan assesses the weight distribution in your foot. Our skilled practitioners will take you through a walking examination, assessing the functions of your lower limbs in general, balance and knee alignments. After the assessment you’ll receive a complete plan outlining any suggested treatment options for your pain free future. Take up the Good Feet challenge. Because you deserve pain free feet…

Life’s Good with Good Feet

*Plantar Fasciitis is the inflammation of the strong band of tissue that stretches from your heel to your middle foot bones, otherwise known as your plantar fascia. It supports the arch of your foot, whilst acting as a shock-absorber – making it an imperative part of your daily lifestyle choices and overall movement.

Call Stuart or Rebecca on 028 9008 0155

before Friday 26th January 2015 and stamp out your foot pains today! Good Feet Ltd, The Roundabout, 649 Saintfield Rd, Carryduff, Down, BT8 8BX
