Hello again everyone, Happy New Year! As we start another year I wish you all health, wealth and happiness in 2016. I don't really ‘do’ new year resolutions, but it is a good time to take stock and think about what we’d like to change in the coming year. Unfortunately I cant control the weather - but I’d like to say a heartfelt thank you to all my fabulous distributors who deliver this magazine every other month, no matter what it’s like outside. Getting the last couple of issues delivered was particularly challenging with all that constant rain, so I’m hoping for better weather in 2016, or at least for a few dry days at the right time! Lots of ‘New Year’ themed reading in this issue to while away the long winter evenings and keep you entertained, PLUS lots of puzzles. Looking on the bright side, the nights are already getting shorter and Spring is definitely coming. Here’s hoping for a short, mild Winter! Until next time....

In the 1980s, it was the Filofax; in the 1990s, the Personal Digital Assistant or PDA. Today, though, we’re more likely to stay on top of our lives using a mobile device. Whether you’re trying to get more organised or just want to stay on top of your New Year’s resolutions, gadgets can help. If your resolution was to get fitter or take better care of your health, there are stacks of devices that can accurately monitor your vital signs and your exercise routines. Firms such as Fitbit offer an entire range of fitness trackers ranging from the clip-on, £49 Zip to fully-featured smart watches such as the £199 Surge. Whichever kind you go for, the devices can track your activity to let you know how active you’ve been, how far you’ve travelled and how many calories you’ve burned, and they can send that data to a phone so you can keep track of your progress. If you’re interested in particular sports, Sat-Nav specialist Garmin makes a range of fitness trackers designed specifically for runners, golfers and other sportsmen and women. You don’t need to be active to benefit from smart gadgets, though. If your resolution was to lose

weight, a set of smart scales - from around £29 for stand-alone scales to £150 for scales that communicate with phones or PCs over Wi-Fi, enabling you to store your progress in an app or even share it with others online - can show you not just how much weight you’ve lost but also how your body is composed. So, for example, if you’re replacing fat with muscle - which is heavier than fat - you’ll be able to see that you’ve made great progress even if the actual weight displayed by the scales hasn’t changed. Then again, you’ll know that by the way your clothes feel, so maybe you don’t need smart scales after all. We’ve mentioned phones a few times now, and that’s because pound for pound they’re the most useful resolution trackers and life organisers: the reason stand-alone electronic organisers are a rare sight these days is because smartphones do a better job for less money. A really good Android phone can be as little as £40, and for that you’re getting a smartphone with built-in calendars and reminders and the opportunity to use apps such as the superb MyFitnessPal, which can track your exercise and can use your phone’s camera to scan barcodes and work out nutritional

More expensive devices such as Apple’s iPhones include motion processors that can track your steps, flights climbed and distance travelled without requiring a dedicated fitness tracker, and Apple’s own Health app can record that data plus anything else you’d like to monitor. If you’d rather do most of that automatically, MyFitnessPal is available for Apple devices too. The other thing that smartphones do is enable you to join like-minded souls. Many fitness devices and apps - Fitbits, Nike Fuelbands, the MyFitnessPal app - also have online communities where you can compare progress, share your stories or just hang around chatting with people who are doing the same things as you. That’s useful, because while fitness devices and apps are great, there’s one thing that only human encouragement can provide, and that’s the motivation to stick to your plan even when you don’t feel like it - and someone to laugh with when you need a bit of a boost. 2 tbsp oil 600g lean lamb steaks, cut into chunks
1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed 1 large onion, peeled and chopped
Add the onion and garlic (and a splash more oil, if needed) and fry over a medium heat, stirring occasionally for 3-4 minutes, then stir in the curry paste and fry for a further minute until fragrant. Return the meat to the pan and stir to coat in the curry paste.
6 tbsp balti curry paste 75g red split lentils 400g can chopped tomatoes 200g baby spinach leaves 2 tbsp chopped fresh coriander Boiled basmati rice and lemon wedges to serve For a spicier flavour replace the balti curry paste with one that has a little more heat such as Madras. Adding some finely chopped red chilli when frying the onion will also boost the heat factor!

Heat half the oil in a large heavy-based pan over a medium-high heat. Add half the lamb pieces and fry for 3-4 minutes, turning occasionally until browned and sealed all over. Remove the lamb with a slotted spoon and set aside. Add the rest of the oil and fry the rest of the lamb pieces in the same way.
Stir in the chopped tomatoes, 300ml cold water and the lentils. Reduce the heat then cover and simmer for about 30 minutes, or until the lentils are soft and the meat is tender. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Stir in the spinach and coriander. Cover and cook for a further 2-3 minutes until the spinach has just wilted. Serve with the boiled basmati rice and lemon wedges.

A few simple measures to update your property can make an enormous difference, says Katherine Sorrell. Step One – Get to know your home Knowing what your home is made from, how was it originally built, and what changes have been made will make it easier to work out how you can eco-improve it. Step Two – What are its weak points? Obvious problems are rattling, draughty windows, gaps around the edges of the front door and heat escaping through the roof. To help target improvements where they are most needed, commission a professional test for air tightness and heat loss. Best done on a cold, clear winter’s night, it is noninvasive and should cost around £300. Step Three – The loft A top priority for eco-improvement, with 300mm of quilt insulation

recommended, though there should be some ventilation in the loft to avoid condensation. There is a range of insulation materials, but natural materials, such as sheep’s wool or hemp, tend to be better for older properties, as they absorb water vapour and release it. Check your loft regularly for signs of condensation, mould and small animals. Step Four - Windows Windows can leak a lot of heat, especially if they are old and single glazed, and short of double glazing, draught proofing is the answer. For a longer-term solution you will need to cut in a rebate and fit either compression seals (hinged windows) or wipers (sashes). Alternatively, secondary glazing will dramatically improve both air tightness and heat loss, and there are clear panels that fix to the window frame with a magnetic strip. Alternatively, use thick, lined curtains, hung close to the wall, or timber shutters - which are more effective than double glazing. Step Five: Doors To make external doors airtight, adjust as necessary for a good fit, add draught proofing (as for windows) and cover keyholes, letter slots and cat flaps. Use a ‘sausage dog’ at the bottom or hang a long, thick curtain from a hinged rod. Step Six: Floors Ventilation below your suspended timber floor evaporates moisture from the timber and supporting structures, so don’t block up external air grilles. To make the floor itself airtight, a fitted carpet with a thermal underlay is perfect, or for timber boards seal gaps

around skirting boards with foam strips, silicon mastic or slivers of matching timber. If the boards have gaps, use fillets of balsa wood or lengths of string, which you can stain, glue and push into place. If you can get below the boards or are planning to lift them, consider adding insulation underneath. Step Seven: Walls It is usually straightforward to insulate modern cavity walls but older, solid walls are more of a problem. Modern systems may trap moisture and cause damp, but one option is to add timber panelling inside, leaving an air gap behind. It may also be possible to add external or internal insulation, but be sure to get impartial advice. Quick Tips Installing shutters can reduce heat loss by 60%. For efficiency, they should meet with a rebated edge and include a brush strip or rubber seal. A thick rug helps to reduce draughts through gaps in floorboards. Adding a pelmet to a window treatment helps to reduce draughts and stop warm air disappearing behind your curtains or blind. Place radiators on internal walls rather than below windows, where their heat can disappear more easily. Main image: Adding a portiere rod is a great way to insulate a draughty exterior door. Hang heavy, floor-length curtains, ensuring that there is enough stack-back space for the door to be opened easily. While our UK mountains may be babies compared to the huge mountain ranges boasted by some other countries, and not exactly widespread (our 56 highest mountains are in Scotland!), we can still appreciate their beauty and importance. What do Mountains Do For Us? Mountains cover around 22 percent of the earth's land surface, providing fresh water, energy and food to 720 million mountain people worldwide and indirectly benefiting billions more living downstream. Mountains have a key role in
providing renewable energy, especially through hydropower, solar power, wind power and biogas. Hydropower currently provides around a fifth of the world’s electricity and some countries rely almost exclusively on mountainous regions for their hydropower. Maintaining Mountain Livelihoods It’s hard for mountain farmers and workers to compete with the prices and production volumes of lowland producers, but globalisation can help them sell high quality products. Tourism, outdoor activities, nature preservation and cultural heritage trails can also help local

economies, but sustainability is crucial to their survival – and this is just as true for our UK mountains. So, what of the highest mountains in Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland? Are their communities and economies thriving and sustainable?

Slieve Donard Northern Ireland’s highest mountain is Slieve Donard, an 850-metre (2,790 ft) peak in the Mourne Mountains, on the coast of County Down. You can catch a glimpse of the Mournes from various parts of BT8 on a god day! The Mourne Wall, built between 1904 and 1922 from natural granite, runs up the western and southern slopes to protect the local reservoir's catchment area, joining a small tower at the summit. This 22 mile long wall passes over fifteen mountains. The local economy relies on stone working, sand and gravel extraction, farming, tourism and outdoor activities. Slieve Donard has amazing views of the sea and also on a clear day you can see as far away as the Lake District peaks, Dumfries and Galloway, Snaefell on the Isle of Man, Ailsa Craig and Arran, so it’s not surprising that along with Scafell Pike and Snowdon, it was used as an observation station by the Ordnance Survey when performing triangulations to fix the positions of Britain and Ireland. If you’ve never been to the Mournes or caught a glimpse of one of the other mountains, make a date in the diary to visit – perhaps in a warmer month!

What I like to do is take a phrase out of context and imagine where it might be better applied. Collecting, washing and sorting the drinks packs offers a reliable and fair income to the poorest families. The bags are designed and sewn by women on the Island of Luzon, the largest of the 7,000 islands of the Philippines. You might be interested to know that even the string supplied is also fair trade and made by farmers from the Subanen tribe in Mindanao. WOW bags is an ecological livelihood project working to Fair Trade principles. CAIRNSHILL PRIMARY SCHOOL Primary 3 had a visit from Mr Morfett who is a local vet. He brought some animals with him which we were able to touch and hold. To begin with we looked at the different groups that animals can be classified into and then played a sorting game with some toy animals. At the end we met a real life prickly hedgehog (who was a little shy and hid under our storage trolley) a smelly stoat, two very friendly guinea pigs, a cuddly rabbit, a bearded dragon and the best of all, a long slithery snake!
