Community Page Deadline: Wed 21st Aug 4
Welcome to the July/August issue of the Carryduff Focus Hello again everyone. As I write, the weather has taken a turn for the better! There have been some lovely warm days so far. Wouldn’t it be lovely to have a great Summer for a change? Always hopeful... Tomorrow is the longest day of the year and my daughter finishes her exams, so a double celebration! Summer is definitely my favourite time of year. And I know our dog just loves it too, judging from the way she races outside when anyone comes into the kitchen, hoping we’ll follow and play with her. We could really learn a thing or two from dogs. Live in the moment, always be ready for fun, be interested in everything, be grateful for every meal supplied (I’m just grateful for every meal someone else cooks, but that doesn't happen too often!), be really happy when everyone comes home... I could go on, but you get the drift. So, that’s what I’m going to do all Summer - live in the moment. We’ve so much community information in this issue - I’m getting more and more contributions each month, which is lovely, with a whole 8 pages in this magazine. I’ve just had a look back at the very first Carryduff Focus from November 2006 and it had just one community page. I knew right from the beginning that it was going to be a really vital part of the magazine, and so it has proved. Community spirit is obviously alive and well in Carryduff! Thanks to everyone who contributes. Whether you’re taking a holiday at home or abroad, I hope you all have a wonderful Summer.
Deirdre

Divorce and Separation Separating from your spouse is a traumatic event in itself; and the legal process can also be daunting. Our solicitors are experienced in dealing with family matters and are on hand to fully explain your options. This article explains briefly the law surrounding divorce however divorce is not the only route open to you – we can also advise regarding family mediation or separation agreements. In Northern Ireland there is one ground for divorce – the marriage must have broken down irretrievably. In order to show this the Petitioner (the person taking divorce proceedings) must prove one of five facts: 1. Two Years With Consent The parties have been separated from one another for two years and the Respondent (the other spouse) consents to a divorce 2. Five Years - No Consent The parties have been separated for five years (this fact is used when the Respondent will not consent to a divorce) 3. Desertion The Respondent must have deserted the Petitioner and the parties must have separated two years immediately preceding the lodgement of divorce papers. Desertion is used because the Petitioner cannot contact the Respondent to obtain their consent. This can be difficult to rely on as complete desertion can be difficult to prove. 4. Adultery Adultery can only occur if it happens after the date of the marriage. In addition a Petitioner cannot rely on adultery if the parties continue to live together for more than six months from the date the Petitioner learns of the adultery. Adultery must be proven which can be by various ways including the Respondent’s admission or circumstantial evidence. Sometimes neither party will want to cite this reason on a divorce petition, especially if the separation has been amicable. In this case parties usually prefer to wait two years and obtain divorce with each other’s consent. 5. Unreasonable Behaviour The legal test is that the Respondent has behaved in such a way that the Petitioner cannot reasonably be expected to live with him/her. To prove this the Petitioner must cite examples to satisfy a Judge. Common examples are excessive drinking, retention/expenditure of family finances. Boredom is not classed as unreasonable behaviour. This is a brief overview of the law regarding divorce however each situation requires careful consideration with your solicitor. If you would like to discuss the options open to you please contact the office to speak with a solicitor free of charge by quoting “Carryduff Focus”

These foot conditions are easily picked up during the summer when we’re more likely to be barefoot, or any time of year around swimming pools, in gyms etc.
and itching between your toes, especially in the space between the fourth and fifth digits, then you might have athlete’s foot – even without the physique of an athlete’s body.
As with most things, prevention is better than cure. Keep your feet as dry as possible and avoid sharing towels and footwear. If you use public showers, wearing flip flops is a good idea.
Do not leave this condition untreated, as it can spread. There are many effective over-the-counter medications available, but severe or prolonged cases should always be referred to a doctor.
Athlete’s Foot Not by any means confined to athletes, this fungal infection (tinea pedis) hangs out in bathhouses, swimming pools and showers. Typically transmitted in damp areas where people walk barefoot, the symptoms are easily recognisable. If you have scaling, flaking

for around fifty percent of all nail disorders and is more common in toenails than fingernails.
A word of warning: it is essential to complete the recommended period of treatment as disappearance of symptoms is not proof of cure.
Often wrongly regarded as merely a cosmetic problem, you can recognise it by thickening of the nail and yellowing or blackening, with the nails eventually becoming hard to cut and painful. Left untreated, the nail may separate from the nail bed and start to crumble. Failure to address the problem at an early stage can lead to a prolonged period of treatment and, in extreme cases, surgery to remove the infected nail.
Onychomycosis This terrifying-sounding condition is a fungal nail infection which can result from other untreated infections, such as athlete’s foot. It accounts
Whilst good hygiene aids prevention, you can become infected in many ways. These include wearing shoes or socks that have become wet, or which harbour the organism. Improper fitting

shoes, or injury to the toe or nail, can provide a weakened area for the fungus to take hold. It can also be contracted in the same way as athlete’s foot, but even household carpets and floor surfaces can harbour this fungus. There are various types of onychomycosis and it is difficult to eradicate. Whilst there are some effective over-the-counter remedies on offer, if the condition persists you should consult your doctor, who may require laboratory tests to be undertaken.

and after treatment
As with athlete’s foot, they are predominantly contracted in public changing rooms and swimming pools. Anyone with a cut or scratch on the foot is particularly vulnerable. Although verrucas can heal themselves, it is better to obtain professional advice on treatment from your podiatrist or pharmacist.

In another of our series of articles about our local environment, Helen Long writes about her observations of nature, right here in Carryduff
You would hardly believe this was Carryduff, would you? It almost looks like something out of a tropical rain-forest. Or could it be our very own version of Jurassic Park? The plant in the foreground is a hogweed. The name refers back to when it was used by our ancestors to supplement pig food. It is very popular with insects, especially the little browny-orange soldier beetles, and if you look closely, you will see that there is a detachment of them on (mostly romantic) manoeuvres! I find this plant quite magnificent in its architectural poise: it certainly does make a statement, and adds a touch of the exotic to our humble location. Be careful to look and not touch though, as its sap can cause quite bad irritation of the skin. The water in the background is the Carryduff River - hardly big enough to merit this title! There are other natural beauties to be seen all around here during spring and summer, if we only learn to sharpen our focus! One of the earliest wild-flowers is the Lesser Celandine (of which William Wordsworth was very fond). It grows on the banks of the same river. Then there are the beautiful clumps of Bluebells which follow on soon after in the same place. On the margins of the Lough Moss pitches and elsewhere early in the season, you can see the furry buds on Willow branches, and also the creamy cat-kins hanging down. Slightly later, Cow-parsley does a spectacular job of furnishing the verges with its phalanx of tall lacy flowers in late May and early June, giving off a rather pleasant scent. And finally, this year has been wonderful for blossom on the White-thorn, which coats almost every branch like thick double cream - magnificent! I photographed some of these here recently, and I don’t think there’s any need to say which is which! Helen Long My, what a beautiful place Carryduff is! 36

Focus on Movies
By Peter Stevenson
AT THE CINEMA: Behind the Candelabra 15, (118 mins) It is a testament to how far our society has progressed that this movie has been made. Deemed ‘too gay’ for American audiences (it is a made-forTV movie over there), its worldwide release this month allows us to judge if all the hype was really justified. The movie tells the story of Liberace’s (Michael Douglas) tempestuous and ultimately sad relationship with Scott Thorson (Matt Damon), based on Thorson’s account. What we get is a hedonistic tale of sex, drugs and…piano music. Douglas’s (Wall Street) portrayal of Liberace is restrained and necessarily so as he is depicted from Thorson’s (the wronged party) point of view. As a result, we see glimpses of his selfishness, introversion, even ostentatiousness (!) but never enough to encourage the audience to hate him. Damon’s (The Talented Mr Ripley) Thorson is a beautifully layered character. From his initial naiveté at being taken in by Liberace, we follow him through moments of great tumult and transition and we see a very believable shift in the relationship between these two men. Director Steven Soderbergh (Magic Mike) uses a gentle directorial hand to nudge the plot along, He counters any dramatic or depressing scenes with the over-the-top, high-camp of the sets which are draped in gold with candelabras everywhere, resulting in a balanced movie which waivers between the stark unreality of show business and its seedy underbelly. Richard LaGravenese’s screenplay does jar slightly; it is full of gay clichés and overuse of the adjective ‘fabulous’. It shines, however, when presenting Jack Startz (Rob Lowe), the shady doctor and plastic surgeon to whom Liberace (and consequently Thorson) runs for any and all ‘medical’ issues. Had this movie been released in America, it would have swept the board at the Oscars, I’m sure…it’s fabulous! 4 / 5
On DVD: This is 40 15 (134 mins) If there is an age at which it is prudent to take stock of one’s life, it is 40. Options, transition, spontaneity dwindle away to be replaced (theoretically) by security and consistency. At what point, however, does consistency become a rut? Can our life choices be guaranteed to make us (un)happy? At what point is it acceptable to just give up? Despite being rather deep issues for the comedy genre, each of these questions is touched upon in an effort to reaffirm our belief that life really does begin at 40. Paul Rudd (I Love You, Man) and Leslie Mann (George of the Jungle) take the leading roles of Pete and Debbie, (a married couple who were background characters in Knocked Up). On the eve of their respective 40th birthdays, family issues come to a head, issues ranging from the bullying of their daughter via Facebook to Pete’s penchant for Viagra. Both actors give genuine, down-to-earth performances which anchor the sometimes extreme comic moments. The best performances however, come from daughters Sadie and Charlotte (played by writer/director Judd Apatow’s real-life daughters Maude and Iris) who give the plot reality and ironically, depth as some of their issues are decidedly superficial. Albert Brooks and John Lithgow play the two grandfathers and, even though they play their parts well, it is difficult to see how their presence adds to the plot. Apatow’s loose, improvisational directorial style can be blamed for the movie’s unnecessarily long running time and the long-time relatively simple issues take to come to a close. However, the relaxed laugh-out-loud moments make up for this and, as a result, the movie finishes with a schmaltzy but humorous message that life does not end when one hits 40, rather life expands into the unknown. 3 / 5 38

St. Joseph’s Primary School, Carryduff has been named the overall winner in the 2013 Best Kept School Awards, which are organised annually by the Northern Ireland Amenity Council (NIAC). This is the first time the school has entered the competition and it has come straight in at the top spot! The accolade acknowledges the school’s outstanding commitment to green projects and environmental education. Judges rated its environmental projects - including a newly created Eco Garden, woodland walk, vegetable plot, and recycling initiative - the Best in Northern Ireland. NIAC Chairman Doreen Muskett MBE commented; “As part of the judging process we look for evidence of pupil participation in environmental projects, and of course clean and tidy school grounds, and St. Joseph’s Primary School is just wonderful on all these fronts. The range of green projects, organised by the school and coordinated by their own Eco Committee, is outstanding and really amounts to an outdoor classroom where the pupils can learn about wildlife, food production and recycling. Top marks for St. Joseph’s!”

Cross Community Schools Golf Day Over 90 primary school children from the Castlereagh Borough took to the greens on Friday 24 May when they participated in a unique cross community schools golfing day at Castlereagh Hills Golf Course. Kindly sponsored by Danske Bank, the aim of the golf day was to introduce children to golf through a series of fun workshops promoting exercise, healthy eating and the basics of golf. The event commenced with a massive fitness class on the 18th fairway, where the children got their hearts pumping during an energetic aerobics session. The children then participated in a healthy eating workshop to encourage them to lead a healthier lifestyle through fun games and play. Children also practised their golf swing with the PGA Golf Professional Roy Skillen and Gary Lavery from Junior Golf Ireland was on hand to provide his expert knowledge of the game and in particular the skill of putting. Attending the event, the Mayor of Castlereagh, Alderman Michael Henderson MBE said, “With growing cases of obesity amongst children in the UK, the golf day provided a fantastic forum for young people to enjoy a new sport while learning more about fitness and healthy eating. The children took part in a number of fun workshops on and off the course, which will hopefully inspire many to take up a new sport or engage in other forms of physical activity.” The event culminated in the afternoon with a schools’ golfing competition, where St Joseph's Primary School, Carryduff were crowned winners and presented with the Castlereagh Challenge Cup.

Millennium Integrated Primary School As usual the run up to the summer holidays has been very busy. Our P1, 2 and 3 children were lucky to have their sports days in the sunshine. They enjoyed taking part in many activities such as the obstacle race, the potato and spoon race and the sack race. Unfortunately the older children were struck by the weather and rain forced a cancellation. P2 entertained us with their ‘Bugs’ assembly. This was followed by their ‘Bugs’ party. There were beetles, ladybirds, spiders and butterflies running around the playground on a treasure hunt and playing bug games. There have been several outings also this term. P1 enjoyed a visit to Streamvale farm, P2 had their annual trip to the zoo, P3 visited the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum in Cultra, P5 had a busy activity filled day at Castlewellan and P6 had a challenging day scaling the heights at the Belfast Activity Centre. The children always look forward to these days out and all have a really enjoyable time. We also had a ‘Healthy Lifestyles’ week in school where the children learned the importance of developing a positive attitude towards healthy living. Many thanks to our hard working Parent’s council who provided healthy breaks for all the children this week. The older boys and girls have been very busy taking part in netball and football competitions. Both teams have had a very successful year and this was capped off by a double win at the All Children’s Tournament in Newcastle. The girl’s netball team recently took part in the NI Netball Finals in Limavady. They played superb netball and easily made it through to the semi-final. Unfortunately they were beaten in extra time, a very close score of 9 – 10. Well done girls, you have made us very proud.

Conditions underfoot were a bit soft but this did not deter pupils in any way. A new format was introduced this year with the emphasis on fun and participation for all the girls and boys. Judging by the amount of laughter and smiles on the faces of pupils and parents, the new format seems to have been a big hit. Thank you to boys and girls, parents and St. Ita's staff who made the evening such a great success.
P7 Leavers’ Production of Cinderella & Rockerfella St. Ita’s Primary 7 pupils finished the year on a high note (literally) with their production of Cinderella & Rockerfella. The boys and girls did themselves, their families and St Ita’s proud with their sheer talent in singing, acting and performing this very funny pantomime.

Castlereagh Borough Council is helping householders spread the cost of heating their home with the launch of a new oil stamp saving scheme. The scheme is aimed at householders who use oil central heating and works through the purchase of £5 stamps at participating retail outlets across the Borough. These stamps are collected on a saving card and can then be redeemed from a choice of participating oil suppliers as full or part payment towards the cost of an oil heating bill. The Mayor of Castlereagh, Alderman Michael Henderson MBE said, “During these difficult economic times, it can prove a challenge balancing household bills. The oil saving scheme enables householders to purchase stamps each time they shop so they can budget for their bill throughout the year. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the participating retail outlets and oil suppliers for supporting the scheme and I hope it benefits many people across the Borough.” Stamps can be purchased from the following local participating retail outlets; VIVO Essentials, 30 Hillsborough Road, Carryduff Spar, Brackenvale Service Station, Saintfield Road Spar, Town and Country Shopping centre, Ballynahinch Road, Carryduff Castlereagh Borough Council, 1 Bradford Court, Upper Galwally, Castlereagh In addition, other retail outlets in Dundonald, Gilnahirk, Braniel, Belvoir, Castlereagh & Cregagh will also stock the stamps.
