Award Winning Chef Kelan McMichael takes the bull by the horns in Ballynahinch, to open his first restaurant venture Ballynahinch’s eagerly awaited new restaurant - the Bull & Ram - is now open. Chef Kelan McMichael, previously at The Poachers Pocket in Lisbane (winner of 2015 Best Gastro Pub) has a passion for local, County Down ‘no frills’ food. This has inspired him to create an imaginative, modern yet informal menu that showcases the very best of local produce and ingredients, all underpinned with incredible flavours. Ironic and also iconic, the venue chosen to host Kelan’s first restaurant is a beautiful Grade 1 listed Edwardian butchers shop in Ballynahinch which has been lovingly restored with the help of architect Sean Furey, of Gradon Architecture. As work was undertaken on this listed building, stunning original features were revealed - from the exquisite tiles on the walls and floors, to the actual bull and ram head. Kelan McMicheal says; “ After 15 years as a chef and having the privilege to work in some incredible restaurants as Head Chef, I felt ready to undertake my own venture. I fell in love with the building in Ballynahinch and it has been full of surprises over the last few months as it has literally unveiled its hidden treasures to us. I have been experimenting with my modern, bistro menu over the years and want to celebrate the true wealth of incredible seasonal, local produce that is on offer in abundance here in Co. Down. Strangford Lobster, Kilkeel crab on toast, Hannan Meats dry-aged in a Himalayan salt chamber to a simple French Onion Soup all served with a glass of James Nicholson’s finest wines.” The Bull & Ram has created twelve new jobs, will enjoy eighty covers and be open seven days a week all day for lunch and dinner.
Please see the Bull and Ram main advert on the Back Cover. 2

Summer is finally here! This is a double issue to cover both July and August while I have a little break. I’ll be catching up on my Accounts, making jam from all the produce in our allotment, tidying that pile of clothes in the bottom of the wardrobe (maybe!), clearing out my office, re-arranging the ‘stuff’ that has collected in the garage and I might even throw some bits and pieces in the bin. Phew! After all that, I’ll be happy to get back to work on the September issue.

Let’s be optimistic and pray for a long hot summer. What gadgets can help your summer really sizzle? From making parties more entertaining to ensuring your barbecued food is full of flavour and not food poisoning, gadgets are here to help you make the most of every second of summer. One of the big trends this year is solar power - not because Britain has suddenly got sunnier, but because the combination of more efficient solar technology and low-power technology such as LED lights means solar gadgets work properly, even when it’s a bit dull. You’ll have seen endless solar lights and spotlights, but how about solar-powered water fountains, bird baths or other water features? You can spend from around £50 to several hundred pounds depending on how complex the feature is and what it’s made of: cheap ones tend to be made of resin, while natural stone takes you into the hundreds. Solar power is also very good for charging phones, which is handy if you’ve embraced streaming music and use your smartphone to play sounds in the garden. It pays to shop around: for example the PowerBee Executive charger, which has an RRP
6
of £39.99, is widely available for as little as £13.99. While you’re at it, you could buy yourself a solar powered wireless speaker too: the Gemtune Kinna speaker is £40, while the larger and longer range Jabadoo wireless outdoor solar speaker is £99. Even if you don’t go solar, a wireless speaker is an excellent investment for summertime sounds, as it means you don’t need to keep your music close to a power point. For many of us summer means outdoor cooking, and of course there are plenty of products designed just for us. The Looftlighter (£48) and BBQ Dragon (£46) use super-heated air to get your barbecue started quickly, while the iGrill Mini (£43) is a Bluetooth thermometer that tells your phone when your food is ready. If money’s no object, the SmartGrill offers voice control, recipe apps and notifications on your phone or tablet. The bad news: the smallest one is around £1,400 and the most expensive model, the 42-inch, is nearly £7,000. Gadgets aren’t just about grilling, and they don’t all require a second mortgage either. Automatic wine coolers cost from around £50 and can chill a bottle of white wine in less than 10 minutes, while the lower-
tech bottle wraps sit in the fridge until you need them, chill bottles in around 15 minutes and cost £9.99. Beer drinkers can join in too: the Xcellent Global Beer Chiller Chilling Sticks, stainless steel rods you freeze and then stick in your beer bottles, are £9.99 for two. The chillers work in some soft drink bottles too. We started off with optimism, but let’s add some realism too: the British weather being what it is, it’s a good idea to have early warning of incoming bad weather. An outdoor weather station provides just that, and you can choose from traditional clock designs with integrated barometers and thermometers from around £25 or go high-tech with a wireless weather station, which can cost from around £25 to several hundred pounds depending on the features you want to have. Or you could always go on Amazon and buy the Amscan PPP GB Umbrella Hat, which offers the protection of an umbrella with the hands-free convenience of a hat for just £2.99.

Nature Focus In another of a new series of articles about our local environment, Helen Long writes about her observations of nature a bit further afield, outside Carryduff. This month Helen visits Ardglass.... The small fishing village of Ardglass is the epitome of quaintness, as far as I’m concerned. Situated on the coast of south-east Down, it has much to recommend it, including some beautiful architecture, and also at least eight archaeological sites within its conservation area. If you want castles, it has them: Jordan’s (15th century) and King’s, to name but two. If it’s history you’re after, it has plenty of that too, including a Victorian Ladies’ Bathing Hut (don’t ask!). If it’s shipping that floats your boat, then take a walk around the harbour and you’re sure to see some of the 30-strong fishing fleet at anchor there. That natural deep harbour has been in use for 3,000 years! In fact, the village was originally an important centre for the Gaelic Dál Fiatach clan, who ruled Lecale for 1,500 years and provided many kings of Ulster. Mix in a strong measure of Norman influence, and stir well: voilā, you’ve got Ardglass - or ‘the green height’, the actual meaning if its name. And if you happen to be there during the annual Festival, then so much the better! This runs from 30th July - 6th August, and there is a big range of events catering for all ages, and particularly children. Think bands & floats, Teddy Bears’ Picnic, a Pig Derby and lots more fab activities on land and sea! I really enjoyed the few hours I spent at it last year. To whet your appetite, the village has a very good website, which is worth a visit before you pay an actual visit to this picturesque haven by the sea!

Community Pages POLICE ADVICE - GET HOME SAFE Police in Lisburn & Castlereagh are promoting their get home safe message as summer beckons and the concert and festival season begins. Supt. Sean Wright said: “The summer is almost upon us and many young adults will be travelling home as university comes to an end. Many people will also be travelling to concerts and festivals over the summer months and we want to make sure that everyone enjoys themselves in a safe way.
If you are going out socialising the most important thing is to drink responsibly. If you go out in a group, stay in a group – don’t let any of your friends wander off on their own. Don’t leave your drink unattended or accept a drink from someone you don’t know. If you feel drunk, dizzy or disorientated, seek help from a trusted friend or member of staff. Give careful consideration before you decide to leave with someone you have just met and remember that without consent it is rape. Make arrangements to get home before you even leave the house and never take a lift from a stranger. Make sure your mobile phone is fully charged before you go out for the night. Keep an eye on your friends. If you get into a heated situation, walk away and keep yourself out of trouble.
We will be conducting our usual night time economy patrols and operation and, together we can make sure that we all enjoy a safe and happy summer.

MONEYREA PRIMARY SCHOOL In February the Yr7s commenced a Business Beginnings Programme by thinking about what a business is and what makes for a successful business. They formed their own company, appointing a Managing Director, six Middle Managers and Assistant Managers. After some discussion they came up with the idea of making key chains. They decided that ‘Keyching’ would be a good name for their company and they began to design, source, produce, market and sell their product. As children were their target market they concentrated their efforts on selling their key chains in school. They entered the Business Beginnings competition in May and were surprised to learn that, for the second year running, they were winners in the South Eastern Region. Later in May they had the great opportunity to sell their product at a trade fair run by Young Enterprise in Bow Street Mall, Lisburn. Six children represented their class at this event and they sold all of their produce and took new orders. They were then invited to the Business Beginnings Final at W5 on the 8th June. Five of the managers from ‘Keyching’ made a four minute presentation and answered questions about their business in front of a panel of four judges from Eir Business NI. Under pressure they kept their cool and delivered superbly but had a very tense wait to see if that would be enough to beat the very stiff competition from the other five regional finalists. … “And the winner is ……………………. ‘Keyching’, Moneyrea Primary School.” A great cheer went up from Moneyrea and everyone, staff and children alike, were ecstatic.

Carryduff Alan & Allison Ewing’s Spar store in Carryduff has sponsored Carryduff Primary & Carryduff Playgroup annual Sports Day, which took place on 7th & 8th June, with a host of budding young athletes, of all ages, from throughout the school taking part. All the ingredients for a great sports day were there. The rain managed to hold off, eggs were primed and ready to sit on spoons and all the kids were fired up to give it their best! There were races to run, hurdles to jump and three legged challenges to compete in.

No Sports Day would be complete without some refreshments and fruit, which was also kindly provided by Spar Carryduff and all in all the day proved to be a huge success. Local retailer Alan Ewing commented: “As a local business in the heart of the community here in Carryduff, we at Spar Carryduff were delighted to sponsor Carryduff Primary’s annual sports day.” This is the Eighth year running we have sponsored this event. Spar Carryduff is a strong believer in encouraging healthy lifestyles and providing good quality products to create a balanced diet. Spar Carryduff also encourages exercise which is essential for a healthy lifestyle. This is a reflected in our sponsorship of School Sports Days, which are currently happening right around the country in our local communities. MILLENNIUM PRIMARY SCHOOL On Saturday 11th June at Ballyholland GAC, Millennium Integrated Primary School, Saintfield, made history by becoming the first integrated school to win the Cumann na mBunscol 9 a side County Down title. They came out on top in a keenly contested final against Carnacaville P.S. Congratulations to coach/P3 teacher Mr Brendan Donnelly and the team. June is the month for school trips and adventures. Our P4 class had a super day orienteering at Palace Stables in Armagh, P6 had a trip to the Ulster American Folk Park in Omagh, P7 had their annual trip to Alton Towers and the Think Tank in Birmingham, P5 had a great day out at Life Adventure Centre in Castlewellan for climbing, archery and canoeing on the lake – this ended up with everyone in the water getting soaked! The P7 class had a day at Tyrella Beach with the RNLI. They learned about keeping safe on the beach and how to recognise when someone is in danger. A huge ‘well done’ to Ellie, Hannah, Joshua, Kiera and Laura from P5 who have been baking lots of buns and tray bakes to sell at school this term. They have managed to raise over £200 for our new school library. Thank you for your fantastic efforts Congratulations to Kiera in P5, Tori in P6 and Holly in P7 who donated 10” of their hair to the Princess Trust, a charity that makes wigs for children that have lost their hair because of cancer. Such a selfless act that will benefit children that are suffering. Well done girls.
