Welcome to the June issue of the Carryduff Focus Hello everyone, here we are at June already, almost half way through the year. As Billy Connolly once said about Scotland, “There are two seasons - June and Winter”. It’s a bit like that here too, and I can verify his quote, having been over to Edinburgh 7 times this academic year since September. Warm winter coat needed on each and every occasion!

Focus on Movies
By Peter Stevenson
AT THE CINEMA: Pompeii 12A (104 mins) Whether it’s Gladiator, Troy, 300 or The Legend of Hercules (out in August), Hollywood’s ‘sword and sandals’ epics of recent years have been, at best, hit and miss. Bronzed and buffed casts draped in togas (and occasionally, much less) cannot make up for the discrepancies in the plot, story or dialogue. Pompeii is a perfect example; the writers begin with the most infamous volcanic eruption in history and manage to suck most of its grandeur away, choosing instead to wallow in a melodramatic storyline of love across the social divide (I know, I’m bored too). The story goes that beleaguered, downtrodden slave Milo (Kit Harington) and nobleman’s daughter Cassia (Emily Browning) fall inexplicably in love but must fight wicked senator Corvus (Kiefer Sutherland), who wants to take her as his wife. Oh, and they also have to deal with some large volcano thing called Vesuvius. That pretty much takes care of the plot, you can work out the rest (it’s that predictable). The acting skills of the two leads prove disappointing enough but it is Sutherland’s gruff, ineffective senator which is the biggest let down, he is minutely more interesting than his fellow characters but he loses any menace as he is overshadowed by the aforementioned eruption. Faults aside, the 3-D proves effective, it could have been more, literally, in your face but it nicely adds an ostentatious air of spectacle to an otherwise drab cinematic experience. Other good points include costuming and depictions of Ancient Roman everyday life. Director Paul W.S. Anderson (Resident Evil) treats his protagonist with kid gloves however, while the fight scenes at the coliseum seem initially to be well structured, they are devoid of gore and are so choreographed, it is like watching Swan Lake! Come on, improvements please! 2 / 5
On DVD: I, Frankenstein 12A (98 mins) Poor Mary Shelley must be spinning in her grave. Yet again, Hollywood has taken her seminal literary creation and ruined it. Not since the days of Boris Karloff’s early ‘Frankenstein’ pictures have we seen the monster as he should be. Here, the monster has been hollowed out (he may have no soul, but now he has no meaning either), the husk of which is thrown into a laughable apocalyptic showdown and, to make things worse, it is given the 3-D treatment. All right, all right, I misspoke, 3-D doesn’t always have a negative effect on a film, but on this occasion it merely distracts from the little plot there is. Speaking of which, the plot revolves, as you would expect, around Frankenstein’s monster (Aaron Eckhart), as he is sucked in to an ongoing battle between gargoyles (good guys) and demons (baddies). Leading the demons is Naberius (Bill Nighy) who wants to use Victor Frankenstein’s secrets from his journal (which he just happens to have) to destroy the human race and bring about Armageddon. Eckhart and Nighy are the big names in this movie but they give such disappointing performances. It is true that the script gives them little to work with but Eckhart’s raspy ramblings (particularly in the voiceover) quickly becomes monotonously dull while Nighy’s attempts at megalomaniacal evil are not understated as they should be, but are on the verge of being comedic. Director Stuart Beattie (also the screenwriter) plays fast and loose with the ‘Frankenstein’ legend and fails to breathe new life into its rotting shell. Let’s hope he doesn’t try this with Dracula! 1 / 5 36

PSNI - Crime Prevention Advice Garden sheds, outbuilding and garages packed with tools, machinery and other valuable equipment offer easy pickings to thieves. Take extra precautions to help reduce the risk of having your property stolen. Always put tools and equipment away items left outside could be stolen or used to help a thief break in. Disable lawn mowers and other large machinery when not in use and chain items together to a solid anchor point. Record details of your property and take photographs of items for easy identification Keep hedges & fences maintained to stop unwanted visitors entering your garden. Close garden gates, lock them from inside. Make sure bikes / children’s toys aren’t left out in gardens & are locked away at night. If you see anything unusual or anyone acting suspiciously, DO NOT DELAY, Call police on 101. In a emergency or where a crime is in progress, call 999.

St Ita’s Primary School Dates for your diary: P4 Year Group Mass – Thurs 5th June at 9am P7 Leavers’ Show – Thurs 12th June at 7pm P7 Leavers’ Mass – Thurs 19th June at 7pm School closes for Summer holidays on Fri 27th June
St Ita’s ECO Team have been working hard to make our school more environmentally friendly. Each class has a recycling and composting bin for children to sort different materials into. The ECO Team have also been trying to save energy in our school and carry out weekly spot checks on classes , for example, turning lights and computers off, closing doors and making sure taps are turned off. The best class is awarded the ECO Warrior Award at assembly each week. We have also been very lucky to have Ms. Smart working with all year groups to develop our school garden and grounds. All year groups have had the chance to plant different fruit, First Communion 2014 vegetables and flowers. The ECO Team applied for the Green Flag Award from ECO-Schools NI. Two judges assessed all of the work our team and school have been doing, and felt we very much deserved the Green Flag Award! We are so proud of all the work carried out by the ECO Team and everyone in our school who have helped achieve this award.

Relate Couple’s Counselling Counsellors who successfully completed their one year couple counselling training programme earlier this year were presented with their certificates of achievement by Sean Holland, Chief Social Services Officer/ Deputy Secretary at the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety. Pictured at the event is Gerry McCluskey from Carryduff receiving her certificate from Sean Holland. St Joseph’s Primary School Congratulations to the P7 Boys’ Handball Team who won the South East Schools Olympic Handball Competition for Primary Sevens. The boys triumphed over tough competition in their section and this stunning display earned them a place in the finals. In a hard fought final the boys emerged winners against St Joseph’s P.S. Lisburn, winning the match 3 goals to 2 goals. It was an exciting and close game, and the boys battled hard to keep their noses in front. The boys were awarded an impressive trophy and super medals for all. The girls also put up an impressive display but just missed out on a finals place, finishing 3rd overall in the competition. Well done to all. Guests from the Dissolving Boundaries programme came to St Joseph’s to record the voiceover for the Dissolving Boundaries video used to promote Dissolving Boundaries Day on 15th May. Jodie took her place in the spotlight to get her first taste of presenting – and did a brilliant job! We have been invited to the celebration at the University of Ulster, Coleraine, where we will meet up online with our partner school in Kilkenny. We are looking forward to seeing the finished product on the day and showcasing the work we’ve done this year. Please mention the Carryduff Focus Magazine when contacting advertisers

Carryduff Primary School P6 recently enjoyed 4 days of outdoor fun at Ardnabannon Education Centre. They had a go at activities such as bouldering, the high ropes course, zip-lining and rock climbing. Carryduff Primary School’s P7 class travelled to Edinburgh to see the sights. Many attractions were squeezed into the 4 day trip, but amongst the favourites were Dynamic Earth and Camera Obscura.

P7s at Edinburgh Castle
The Down Fundraising Group for Marie Curie Cancer Care is holding its Great Big Tea Party - actually mainly coffee and homemade scones and cakes - on the 19th June 10am-1pm in the Market House Ballynahinch. All welcome.
Millennium Integrated Primary School Our KS2 children have been taking part in lots of different sporting activities - cross-country running, GAA multisport and Gaelic Football. Recently our P6 boys took part in the SEELB handball tournament where they were narrowly defeated in the final. The girls (pictured top right) made it to the finals of the Belfast School Netball league and for the second year in a row they won, beating off tough competition. Congratulations to the girls; their commitment and hard work has paid off. Well done to all the children for taking part in the various competitions, to the children that have helped in the coaching sessions and to Mr Donnelly, Mr Corrigan & Mr Gardner for their time and dedication to sport . Our P1 classes went on a trip to Crawfordsburn Country Park. They walked through the woods and along the beach on a ‘colour’ hunt. Using items found on the beach and in the woods they were able to match lots of different colours to their colour charts, leaves, sand, seaweed, feathers, wood, berries, shells and feathers (pictured right). 42

Moneyrea Primary School
When the children of Moneyrea PS turn their classroom into a television studio the outcome is hilarious. This year’s show took the audience on a roller coaster journey across the more popular TV genres with a programme schedule including ; Moneyrea’ Got Talent, DIY SOS, Little Blighters, Dead Weight, Class Act, Supervisors and of course, The Nolan Show.
Little Ant & Dec meet Beyonce
Performed over two nights, to sell-out audiences, the children provided an excellent evening’s entertainment. The show featured stand out performances from Cameron McCaughey and CJ Crosby as Ant and Dec; Jessica Dunlop as Susan Boyle; Alexander ScottDobbs as Nolan Nolan and Stephen McDougall as Mr Greer. If you need your kitchen renovated send for Bradley Dugan and the boys, or if the kids are playing up maybe you should call for Super Nanny, Serena Smart or our Playground Supervisors and if you have a burning question, Cameron Riley’s bound to have the answer. Or DIY SOS maybe you think you got what it takes to be a star, well pitch yourself against our very own Louis Walsh (Charlie Anderson), Sharon Osbourne (Sarah McCreery) and Simon Cowell (Stephen McDougall). All-in-all, a fantastic effort by all of the boys and girls from Years 5 to 7 and a credit to our staff and show directors, Helen Peters and Jill Anderson.
