Hello again everyone,

Where’s the exam weather gone? One thing you could always rely on was glorious weather when you had to knuckle down and concentrate. Not this year! Or at least not so far, but we can always hope. Good luck to anyone doing exams in June.

We always do our planting out (hanging baskets, pots, window boxes) on one of the bank holidays in May. Years ago, that used to be on the first bank holiday, and we would be out in t-shirts working in the sunshine. However, in the last few years, that’s been too cold. As I write, the second bank holiday is just days away and I might have to get out my thermals! Let’s hope we get some lovely sunny weather in June. My fingers are crossed. Fed up with this miserable weather at home, I’ve just booked us a week away for later on this Summer. Now, normally I’m a bit of a perfectionist and take ages to look at all aspects of the holiday, the place, the accommodation, the reviews, google street view etc but this time, I’ve got it done in record time. It’s cheered me up big time! Cant wait to go, relax and read lots of books (and not feel guilty about all the little jobs that need to be done!) Don’t forget it’s Father’s Day on 21st June. Time to treat your Dad to something special! I’m off to find my suitcase. Have a great month. Until next time....
Deirdre

Human beings have been cooking things over outdoor fires since we first worked out how to catch and cook woolly mammoths, but while the basics of barbecuing haven’t changed the tools we use have. Today there is a whole range of gadgets for outdoor entertaining, from handy barbecue tools to speakers that can get your favourite tunes wherever and whenever you want to have a party. If you’ve ever wrestled with charcoal in a chimney starter, the £44 BBQ Dragon Fire Supercharger is going to delight you. It’s a battery powered air jet that gives a constant flow of air to your fire, enabling you to get cooking without fire lighters or fluid. It works with fire pits, charcoal barbecues, campfires and anything else that involves setting things on fire. Technology has also reinvented the humble lighter. The Looftlighter (around £60) lights barbecues without fluids or gas by blasting a 1,256 degrees Fahrenheit airstream at the coals. That power isn’t portable - the Looftlighter needs to be plugged into the mains - but the 10-foot cord means you don’t need to wheel the barbecue to the back door to get your grill started. In a nice touch. some models also
6
include bottle openers in the handle so you don’t need to leave the barbecue to open your beer. Unfortunately for many garden-grill guests, barbecue season is also peak food poisoning season. If you know a chef who’s a bit of a health hazard, a wireless Bluetooth thermometer could save your stomach: the clever Bresser Bluetooth BBQ Thermometer communicates with a smartphone to tell you when meat is cooked to perfection. It works without a phone too thanks to an externally mounted display, and at £39.99 it isn’t particularly expensive. If you’re a fan of late-night cooking, technology can help with that too: for around £15, you can get an LEDpowered barbecue light that enables you to see what you’re doing even when it’s starting to get dark. Touch sensitive controls means you won’t find yourself fumbling for the switch, and because LEDs use hardly any energy you can expect around 20 hours of light from a single set of AA batteries. We love barbecuing, but we’re not so keen on the inevitable clean-up: no matter how careful you are or how hot you’re cooking, the grill always ends up in a mess. If you’d
rather not spend valuable summer time on cleaning, a robot can help. The Grillbot (from around £93 to £143) claims to be the world’s first automatic grill cleaning robot and promises one-button operation. Just make sure the grill’s cold before you stick a robot on it. If you’d like a soundtrack to your searing, portable Bluetooth speakers are wonderful things: they connect to your smartphone or tablet, can go almost anywhere and deliver surprisingly good sound. We particularly like the Bose SoundLink Mini, but at £169 it’s quite pricey: perfectly decent speakers such as Creative’s D80 are available for around £33. Money no object? Then you should check out Naim’s incredibly good and incredibly expensive Mu-So Wireless Music System, a steal at £895. It isn’t cheap, but listening to it is like having your ears licked by angels and with six 75-watt digital amplifiers, those angels are very loud angels indeed.

We address some of the most common questions you might have about looking after your trees and hedges. By Matthew McCartney What if… my trees look dangerous? All tree owners are responsible for ensuring that their trees are in a safe and healthy condition and are not a liability to persons in their own property or in the vicinity. If there appears to be large unstable limbs hanging over a neighbours or your own property then you will require the services of a competent and well trained tree surgeon. What if… my tree needs pruned? To do the job properly will require a fully qualified Arborist who can safely remove dead/ dying or rubbing branches and do no damage to fences and greenhouses. The future health of your trees can be protected by careful pruning, understanding the tree biology and how the tree responds to each cut. Poor pruning and poor pruning cuts will cause damage that will last for the life of the tree and can often reduce its lifespan or ruin the aesthetics and balance of the crown. What if… my tree has a Tree Preservation Order (TPO)? If your trees are protected by a TPO, permission from the Council is required before carrying out any tree surgery work whatsoever. This permission can be obtained 14
either by yourself or the contractor as your agent. Failure to gain consent could lead to prosecution of both parties. Council will typically require a short report from a certified tree Surgeon outlining why the tree requires remedial work before giving the appropriate consents. What if… My or a neighbours hedge is out of control? Both leylandii and cypress became fashionable as instant hedges but they can become overgrown very quickly without the correct care and attention. Consequently, the issue of hedges blocking out light or straying across garden boundaries has become commonplace. Acts have been implemented to give home owners the ability to apply for a high hedge notice from their local authority. Due to the circumstance specific nature of the matter the Acts are multifarious and potentially confusing but protection does exist if you can prove trees or hedges are detrimental to the reasonable enjoyment of the property and/or are blocking out light. What if… there is fungus around the bottom of my tree?
Fungus can take various shapes and forms. With some, you may notice large brackets protruding from the trunk (typically around the base / chest height of the tree and present all year round). Other fruiting bodies will typically only arise in Autumn and will be likely found in the soil near the vicinity of the tree. Honey fungus is probably the most commonplace in gardens. Any tree that shows signs of fungus, especially those in maturity and close to buildings and roads should be inspected immediately by a reputable tree surgeon with the appropriate certification. What if… there are nesting birds/bats in my trees? The law is extremely clear on this issue. Any tree with nesting birds or bats cannot have any remedial work carried out unless it can be proven that the tree is a danger to the public. There are potentially hefty fines for working outside these guidelines including £5000 per bat and £2000 per bird. What if… I need free expert advice? Contact a recognised Tree Surgeon with the appropriate qualifications and Public Liability Insurance.

• 2-3 racks of pork ribs (see Tip)
• 6 tbsp tomato ketchup • 3 tbsp maple syrup • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce • 2 tbsp sunflower oil • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard • 1-2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed
Most large supermarkets sell racks of ribs or ask your local butcher to prepare them for you. Single ribs will work just as well (you’ll need about 2kg in weight), just reduce the simmering time to about 25 minutes. .
26
Place the ribs in a large pan and cover with cold water. Bring to the boil then skim off any scum from the surface of the water. Reduce the heat, cover and simmer gently for 45 minutes. Meanwhile, place the rest of the ingredients in a pan and bring to the boil. Simmer for 5-10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Leave to cool. Remove the racks from the pan and drain on a board lined with kitchen paper. Leave to cool for 5 minutes then brush each rack liberally with some of the sauce. Cook the ribs on the edge of a hot barbecue for 10-15 minutes, turning and basting with any remaining sauce until the ribs are lightly charred in places. Alternatively, the ribs can be cooked under a medium preheated grill.

Movie Focus
By Peter Stevenson
AT THE CINEMA: Avengers: Age of Ultron 12A (142 mins) Another month, another Marvel based cash cow looms its head and makes another mini fortune for Stan Lee. Last time it was the more obscure Guardians of the Galaxy which built a huge number of box office receipts but now, nevertheless, Marvel returns to the ensemble of its bigger franchises to keep its fortunes more buoyant than those of Tony Stark. Speaking of Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), he is the liability of the group in this case but more on that later. The Avengers seem to be functioning well as a unit, even Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) and Thor (Chris Hemsworth), traditionally not team players. While eradicating a HYDRA outpost, the Avengers come across an artificial intelligence prototype which inspires Stark to create his own A.I. to keep humanity permanently safe. Unfortunately, Stark’s invention Ultron (James Spader) decides that, paradoxically, this is best achieved by eliminating the Avengers and humanity with them. All of the Avengers and their particular characteristics are present; Thor broods in his demigod-like way, while Stark is his usual cheeky self, indeed one of the few comic moments comes when Stark, having made an error during an explosive showdown, screams in frustration, ‘S**T!’ to which ultra-good-guy Captain America (Chris Evans) scolds, ‘Language!’ There are some tender moments - when the Avengers stay at chez-Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Banner (Hulk’s alter ego) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) have a romantic liaison, not quite a tryst (it is a family film) and Black Widow has some flashbacks, briefly providing her with an origin story. King of nerdy franchises Joss Whedon writes and directs Ultron, building on his 2012 prequel. It is a fun comic-book blockbuster but with all the depth of a puddle. 3 / 5
On DVD: Foxcatcher To 15 (139 mins) Wrestling…no, I don’t mean the exploits of ‘Hulk’ Hogan or ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin, but the Olympic sport, must make do without the flamboyant costumes and ostentatious choreography and so, thankfully, must this film. Channing Tatum takes on the role of Olympic Gold Medallist wrestler Mark Schultz, who has never quite cashed in on his success. Enter billionaire philanthropist John du Pont (Steve Carell) who, a wrestling enthusiast himself, has a rather attractive proposition for Schultz: a chance to lead fledgling team ‘Foxcatcher’ to Olympic glory, the luxury of living on du Pont’s sprawling estate in Pennsylvania and the opportunity to be handsomely paid for his efforts. Shockingly he agrees and life is good, at least until du Pont’s behaviour becomes increasingly peculiar and he does something on which I cannot elaborate because it will give away the plot but save to say it changes Mark’s life in a way he was not expecting. Considering Tatum’s acting ‘talents’ have so far proven to be quite limited (think Magic Mike or 21 Jump Street), his attempt at bringing life to the character of Mark Schultz (as opposed to impersonating Schultz, himself an executive producer on this film) is surprisingly heartfelt; deep even. Tatum’s angstridden performance is both tempered and reinforced by Schultz’s brother Dave (Mark Ruffalo); their ambivalent relationship masks a much deeper connection. Carell is easily the star. For a man best known for his comic roles, to play John du Pont, all clownish tendencies have been set aside and Carell plays him beautifully. From his slightly creepy prosthetic nose to his pathetic relationship with his mother (Vanessa Redgrave), it is never obvious who du Pont really is: is he just a billionaire philanthropist, or is he merely a wrestling fan with too much money and time on his hands? 4 / 5 34

Water for Elephants - Sara Gruen Newly-orphaned scholar Jacob Jankowski decides to kiss his old life goodbye and skip town, hopping on a passing freight train. It turns out to be the travelling Benzini Brothers and their Flying Squadron, billed as ‘the most spectacular show on earth’. Bedazzled by the glitz and glamour of the big top and the circus performers, Jacob falls head over heels in love with someone he definitely shouldn’t and he soon finds out that carrying on the affair could be the most risky of death-defying acts. Something Wicked This Way Comes - Ray Bradbury Thirteen year olds James Nightshade and William Halloway find they have the unenviable task of saving the souls of everyone in their Midwestern town after a ‘dark carnival’ arrives. Can the best friends overcome the mysterious and evil ‘Mr Dark’ who is casting a spell over the local community, tempting them with their deepest, darkest secret desires? It’s a gripping novel that combines fantasy and horror. Should we fear what lurks in the shadows, or embrace it?

The Carnivorous Carnival - Lemony Snicket One for the Young Adult agegroup now and if you haven’t read any of Lemony Snicket’s offerings then you really must. The Carnivorous Circus is the ninth novella in the series and follows the continuing exploits of the orphaned Baudelaire children who are trying to escape from the clutches of the evil Count Olaf. In this instalment, the intrepid and inventive children must disguise themselves as circus freaks to hide in amongst the acts of the Caligari Carnival. Prepare for much craziness and mayhem…and baby Sunny in a beard.
A Son of the Circus - John Irving Not what you’d call ‘classic Irving’ but brilliant none the less, this tale of serial killings, twins separated at birth, class differences and even a dwarf chauffeur will have you wondering who on earth ‘dunnit’ in the bustling Indian city of Mumbai. It has a pretty intricate plot-line and a fantastic cast of colourful characters designed to cause confusion and intrigue in the mind of the reader. The Great Blue Nile circus features heavily but the story twists and turns like some great, rolling river and you’ll get totally washed away by it.
Full Tilt - Neal Shusteman If you thought carnivals were all merry-go-rounds and candy floss, think again. Sixteen year old Blake’s got himself in a right pickle: he’s chased his thrillseeking brother Quinn into a carnival that’s free to get into, but could cost you your life to get out of. Blake finds he’s locked in a terrifying game where he must survive seven deadly sins before dawn. Blake must face his own inner demons and deep-seated fears to save his and his brother’s souls. It’s a terrible notion but a tantalising read.
Carnival - Rawi Hage ‘Fly’ is a taxi-driver who was born in a circus and grew up surrounded by clowns, acrobats and all manner of performing folk who inhabit such worlds. As he drives his cab across the city he spends his life picking up and dropping of all of life’s curious creatures. From drug dealers to prostitutes, he comes across all manner of debauched and depraved characters, causing Fly to muse that ‘the world is a carnival’. How wonderful, freaky and colourful it is.

ST JOSEPH’S PRIMARY SCHOOL Daire, Cara and Ross represented St Joseph’s at the STEM Primary School challenge. Their brief was to design a bridge – with just paper, straws and imagination! They did a brilliant job, and their bridge proved to be very sturdy one holding with ease the bag of sugar (see photo left) put on it. Well done team. Brilliant news! We’ve had a fabulous response to our Cash for Clobber appeal. The weight of the bags was 3300Kg. That earned us £1650 for sports provision in St Joseph’s Primary School. We are delighted. Thank you for your support.
CARR PRIMARY SCHOOL Well Done to Chelsea, Sam and Euan in P6/7 who took part in STEM (Science, Technology, Engenering and Maths) challenge. Their task was to design a bridge that would hold a weight! They were assessed in three areas design, construction and performance. They came 1st in construction and got full marks for performance. Overall they came runner up. We had a special maths week in school. Each class took part in maths investigations and challenges. These included a whole school number hunt and a P6/7 money making challenge (which became very competitive). Well done to the girls team for making the most profit with their "Loom-a -Sweet" product. It was an enjoyable week and the children learnt a lot. Teachers asked the children to take part in a competition to get "Caught Counting" we had some fabulous entries. Caleb Johnston was our P1 winner - see photo - he was caught counting his John Deere tractors. Our school show "The Peace Child" will take place in Wednesday 3rd June at 6.30pm. All children have a part and they are very excited about putting on a show for you all! Everyone Welcome! We will hold our summer fair on 6th June 2016 from 11am - 1pm. We extend a warm welcome to the local community. We have a variety of stalls with children's entertainment, music and local food produce. (please see separate advert on page 39) 40

CHRISTIAN AID & CONNECT - THANK YOU CARRYDUFF On Thursday 14th May, over 50 people from Carryduff and beyond enjoyed a Soup and Bread lunch at Connect’s Drop-In premises in the shopping centre as part of Christian Aid’s 70th anniversary events. Over £270 was raised, this being in addition to that raised from door to door collections in the community. To all who were involved in the event’s organization and everyone who supported it with their presence and donations we send a very big Thank You. It was the first time that Connect (a local interchurch group) and Christian Aid joined forces for an event of this type and we’re pleased to announce that it was a great success.”
MILLENNIUM INTEGRATED PRIMARY SCHOOL finished another very successful Integrated Education Week in March. All integrated schools in Northern Ireland celebrated integration during this week school through the theme of Horizons. The week started with P5 delivering a very exciting assembly that told us about integration through song, dance, sketches, quizzes and raps. There were various activities throughout the week such as an interschool quiz and dodgeball competition, movie day and language days. We also had a careers day where we had a variety of people talk about their jobs. We had a doctor, an artist, a vet, a hairdresser, a firefighter and a journalist. The children really enjoyed the talks and it certainly gave them an insight into what the future could be for them. The week finished with a really exciting story-telling session that was done through the medium of puppets.
Shadow puppets
Integrated Education Week finished in all schools with Odd Sock Day. All the children (and staff!) came to school wearing odd socks. This was a fund-raising activity for the Integrated Education Fund that supports integrated schools in Northern Ireland. Millennium IPS managed to raise over £500 for the IEF and the school certainly looked very bright with all the colourful odd socks!
