Maybe the novelty’s wearing off but I’ve discovered there are one or two downsides to losing a lot of weight. (This is following on from my welcome message in the April magazine where I talked about following the keto diet and losing 3 and a half stone). Now, I’m not really complaining, it’s (mostly) all good. Firstly, and pretty obviously, clothes. Nothing fits. This is okay in the Winter. Who doesn’t love a baggy jumper? But, as we are now venturing into Summer (or what passes for Summer in this part of the world) I will need to take out a mortgage and go shopping. The daughter keeps telling me to shop online like she does (sending 90% of it back!). (We’re on very friendly terms with the DPD guy, he’s here with ASOS parcels practically every other day. And I know the names of all the Post Office staff as I’m there so often with her returns.) Secondly - and this was a surprise to me - sitting on hard seats or on the floor is NOT comfortable. I previously had substantial padding and could sit anywhere I fancied. Not anymore. Thirdly, looking at pictures of myself from before. The husband has somehow connected his phone gallery to the TV so random pictures pop up when a programme being cast has ended. Cue endless fascination and hilarity from the rest of the fam. I can’t bear to look. I have to keep the remote handy just in case! Enjoy whatever you get up to this month. Until next time!

GO PAPERLESS Computers haven’t quite given us the paperless office, but there are plenty of apps that can get rid of paper and store the things you need digitally. One of the best is Microsoft’s Office Lens, which is available for Apple and Android phones. It uses your phone’s camera to scan documents, receipts, scribbled notes or business cards. If you’re at college or university or attend a lot of meetings you’ll like its ability to capture whiteboard scribbles and turn them into documents. Everything gets stored in free OneDrive storage, it integrates nicely with the free OneNote note-taking app, and you can use optical recognition to turn your scans into editable Word documents. It’s really clever and useful if you accumulate a lot of paper or have to record a lot of presentations or meetings.

In another of a new series of articles about our local environment, Helen Long writes about her observations of nature outside Carryduff. This month Helen visits Montalto Estate.... You really should go and explore the grounds of the Montalto estate, off the Spa Road near Ballynahinch. Although the house is private, its garden and woodlands have recently been opened up to the public; and they are proving very popular indeed! It’s open from Wednesdays to Sundays every week (see website for opening hours), and there is so much to see! There are three trails (walks) available: the Garden, Lake and Woodland. I completed the first two, and look forward to going back for the third very soon—the main incentive being the presence of our native red squirrels! The estate is both wildlife-friendly and environmentally aware. There are various sizes of nesting boxes along the trails, as well as bird feeding-stations. You only have to pause and listen to realise that the place is alive with birds—one more reason why I intend to go back! On my visit, several summer migrants were loudly proclaiming their arrival, notably the chiffchaff with its repetitive two-tone call, and the oh-somelodious blackcap. If you follow the Garden Trail, you will encounter several magnificent rhododendrons, and there are some really spectacular ancient trees, among the oldest in the province! On the subject of age, the estate dates back to pre-Plantation times, when it was owned by a certain Patrick McCarten. However, after he joined the Rebellion of 1641, his lands were confiscated, and he was eventually executed in 1653. The demesne thus became part of the Ulster Plantation, though the present house wasn’t built until around 1765, by the Earl of Moira. It had an interesting history, and a few decades later in 1792, two famous United Irishmen, Wolfe Tone and Thomas Russell, were entertained there by Lord Moira. Fortunes seem to have changed rapidly, because the Battle of Ballynahinch—part of the 1798 Rebellion—was fought on the estate, and apparently the rebels occupying the house were fired on by the militia, and some of the ensuing damage may still be seen! In a much later war in the 20th century, Montalto was taken over as a base for US soldiers (WW2). It’s wonderful that both house and grounds have been restored to their former grandeur by the current owners, boasting a play area for children and a lovely purpose-built visitor centre capable of accommodating 120 people and serving healthy local produce. What’s not to like about that, less than half-an-hour out the road? Go, and explore! (Visit www.montaltoestate.com for ticket prices)

BALLYGOWAN COMMUNITY VOICES are a local choir for local people. Our members are from local towns and villages and of course from Ballygowan itself! We meet in the Village Hall on Friday evenings from 7.30pm to 9.00pm and sing different genres of music under the guidance of our Musical Directors - Elaine and Brian McMaster. We host 2 concerts each year (June and November) and much of the proceeds of these are donated to local charities such as Blesma, Air Ambulance Northern Ireland, Bandanas for the Brave, the Laurence Trust, and the Stroke Association to name a few. We have also enjoyed performing at Bangor Castle, various Churches, Belvoir Golf Club and local Christmas markets. If you enjoy singing, why not come along and join us? There’s no audition and you would be made very welcome! Check out our Facebook page, or ring Julie on 07964 601555 for further information. ST JOSEPH’S PRIMARY SCHOOL We had a wonderful morning’s entertainment with the Grand Finale of St Joseph’s Got Talent. There were a total of 14 acts – taken from Primary 5 to Primary 7. We had singers, comedians and dancers, musicians and even a magician. St Joseph’s definitely does have talent! We raised a grand total of £312 for Trocaire on the day – which will add to money raised from each of
the seven heats. Everyone was a winner – but Ruairi, Eoghan and Cain from Primary 7 were crowd favourites. Well done to the presenters, judges, money counters and organisers from Primary Seven – they are an amazing year group!
CARR PRIMARY SCHOOL Mini Marathon A sponsored mini marathon took place last month at Carr Primary. Every child ran a mile per day and
all funds raised have been kindly donated to our PTA. A total of £934 was raised. Well done everyone. 38

MILLENNIUM INTEGRATED PRIMARY SCHOOL P1 enjoyed a recent trip to the aquarium in Portaferry. They got the ferry across and had a fantastic day at the seeing all the amazing sea life there. The rain even stopped for long enough for us to have a play in the park before travelling home.
