Deadline for adverts for the December issue: Monday 14th November 2016
to your November magazine
Hello again everyone, This is the 111th edition of the Carryduff Focus. That means my publishing business is ten whole years old (that’s printing 11 issues per year, in case you were reaching for a calculator). I’m feeling quite proud of myself for achieving this milestone, and to my surprise, I find I’m still enjoying the process. Just as well, really, as the magazines have become a huge part of my life. 10 years have gone by so quickly! Back then, I was working in the Civil Service, our kids were 14 and 11. Now, I work from home full time (which is just so lovely) and both children are living and working away - our son in Manchester and our daughter in Edinburgh. It’s so true there is nothing more constant than change! Somehow, the 100th issue managed to pass unnoticed last year, so I thought this year, I’d have a little celebration of the 10 year anniversary. You can read about it and my heartfelt thanks to all of you on pages 18 and 19. Without your support, I wouldn't have a business and so wouldn't be celebrating. Here’s to the next 10 years! Until next time!

There’s a very good chance that this year, Santa’s sack will be stuffed with gadgets: from kidfriendly tablets to expensive iPhones, many people’s presents will be of the digital variety. But you don’t need to spend a fortune to get some great gifts.
Thank goodness for accessories, then: a leather case for a smartphone or a messenger bag for a laptop makes a great gift, although watch out for “bonded leather”, which is artificially produced and doesn’t wear like real leather. It’s usually a good idea to stay away from novelty items anything hilarious that’s designed to plug into a USB port is surely destined for landfill by Boxing Day - and if you can’t think of anything appropriate, vouchers make an excellent present. Amazon vouchers are great for everyone, iTunes vouchers are fantastic presents for anyone with an iPod, iPad or iPhone, Netflix vouchers are good for TV and film buffs, and there are stacks of vouchers for specific retailers. Keep an eye on the newspaper adverts and voucher websites, though: some shops, especially supermarkets, run multi-buy deals on vouchers such as iTunes vouchers, enabling you to save around 20%. Be careful, though, as if a retailer goes out of business it’s very unlikely that the vouchers will be redeemable, so it’s important to stick with well-known firms. A voucher for Dodgy Dave’s Digital Depot might not be the wisest investment. We’re Celebrating 10 fantastic years in business! The Carryduff Focus magazine is 10 years old this month. And the BT8 Focus is 9 years old. Apparently only around 10% of businesses survive until their 10th anniversary. That’s a shocking statistic, but I’m very glad and proud to say I’m now part of that ten percent. The magazines have come a long way – when I look at the first couple of issues (pictured far right) I see how much I’ve learnt over the years! The first Carryduff Focus was 32 pages - black and white inside with a colour cover and was only distributed to half of Carryduff each month. That soon changed when I realised how well it was received. After a year, I started publishing a quarterly magazine for the other part of BT8 – the BT8 Focus, followed a couple of years later by the Local Focus for Saintfield and Ballygowan.
Michael, Michael Chandler Estate Agents "Having advertised mainly on the front cover of the Local Focus magazines in Carryduff and BT8 for a number of years, I have always been impressed with the service and response received. I believe people appreciate a local business focusing on local matters. Deirdre is an absolute pleasure to work with and takes great care in ensuring the magazines are delivered when they should be. It is a testament to the service they are celebrating 10 years in business – I am looking forward to working with the team for the next 10!" 18
But one thing hasn’t changed – the ethos of the magazines was to support community events and organisations, and to promote other local businesses – this is still at the heart of what I do today. The community pages in particular have grown so much – there was just a single page of community information in the first issue! Along the way, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed meeting lots of local people – local business owners, people from community organisations and of course readers. I’d like to say a huge thank you to all of my lovely readers for valuing and using the magazines, and thank you to all my
Lynsey, Lynsey Quinn Hairdressing "I have used the Local Focus magazines to advertise my business from opening Lynsey Quinn Hairdressing in 2010. It's a fantastic way to reach new local customers. I have always been more than happy with the work they have done for me. Deirdre makes it very simple and is always very helpful with new ideas on how to make my ad stand out." From Mr C D, a resident “We received our BT8 Focus through the door a few days ago. As a new resident into the area, this is a very useful publication. Keep up the good work!”

advertisers, whether established or new, for their continued support. Many of the advertisers in the very first issue are still advertising today. I’d also like to add a word of thanks to my dedicated team of distributors who provide a fantastic service, venturing out in all weathers to make sure your copy is delivered. Without them, you wouldn't be holding the magazine in your hand today! Deirdre
Bernie, Beechill Inn. “I've advertised at Local Focus now for over 5 years and without doubt can guarantee that it has improved the Beechill Inn profile considerably. Deirdre is also a great at helping me construct my ads so that they have maximum impact. Without doubt it’s just right for our business.” Francis, Ivanhoe Painting & Decorating “Advertising is such a key tool for any business in today’s modern world, especially within the trade industry as there is so much competition. That’s why I turned to the Carryduff Focus. Deirdre provides
exceptional customer service on top of the marketing expertise which is why The Focus has become such a key component in the advertising business in South Belfast. Thankyou to Deirdre and for ensuring the community in Carryduff and surrounding areas have been made aware of Ivanhoe PD for all their painting needs for the past 6 years. Thankyou!” From Mr M M, a resident “Just a note to say I think you do a real nice job with Carryduff Focus. I find it very handy to have all the ads coming out regularly - and the original text is always interesting. Thanks!”

Nature Focus In another of a new series of articles about our local environment, Helen Long writes about her observations of nature a bit further afield, outside Carryduff. This month Helen visits Lisburn.... I worked in Lisburn for all of 33 years, and yet never really got to Sir know the place until after I retired! Even more shameful is the fact that I taught in the Wallace High School but knew little about Richard Wallace the man who established the school and after whom it was named: Sir Richard Wallace (1818-1890). Although a British aristocrat, he spent much of his life in Paris, where he accumulated a large art collection. He eventually transported this to England, and later bequeathed it to the nation. When he came into his inheritance (Marquis of Hertford), he did much to improve the wellbeing of the citizens of Lisburn as their landlord— the school being just one example. While he was resident in Paris the city underwent a siege (1870-71). He refused to leave, and bravely undertook many public-spirited acts on behalf of the most destitute and impoverished citizens, the most famous of which was the provision of drinking fountains throughout the beleaguered city. Thus he ensured that, not only were they practical life-savers, but objects of beauty as well. You can still see them in Paris, and there are exact replicas in Lisburn as well! It’s a pity he never settled in Lisburn, even though he had a lovely house built in Castle Street: his French wife Goldcrest preferred her home city. Another of Sir Richard’s legacies to the town was the beautiful Castle Gardens, which he provided specifically for the citizens’ recreation. In a recent walk there I could hear little A Wallace Fountain goldcrests (our tiniest bird, with a tiny voice to match!) and other birds calling in Castle Gardens among the mature trees - a real oasis of calm in a busy city. The River Lagan, flowing as it does, right through Lisburn, was crucial to the development of the linen industry in the area. Although that is now a thing of the past, the Linen Museum in the town centre is well worth a visit: you will learn much about the linen industry from the very well-informed staff, and will see wonderful demonstrations of spinning and weaving - and it’s all free! This is part of our heritage, just as Sir Richard’s benevolence was, and is something we can still be very proud of today.

Oh, and on your next trip to London, why not go and view the world-famous Wallace Collection in Hertford House, Manchester Square, W1, and maybe even exchange a few jokes with the Laughing Cavalier?!

POLICE ADVICE - STAY SAFE THIS HALLOWE’EN Halloween festivities can be enjoyed by everyone, but for some individuals ‘trick or treating’, bonfires, fireworks and sparklers may result in a rather nasty surprise. Supt. Sean Wright said, “Police in Lisburn and Castlereagh District are appealing for parents, youth and community leaders to assist in making this year’s festivities safe and fun. The weeks prior to and after Halloween are becoming an increasingly busy time of the year for the Police Service. We continually receive reports of criminal damage and youths causing annoyance to vulnerable people within the area. We want to make it clear that anyone caught breaking the law will be dealt with robustly. “Parents need to make sure they know the whereabouts of their children and to make sure that they are not engaging in any criminal activity or criminal damage to property. Individuals are also being urged to pay close attention to their own personal safety, if they intend to be in the vicinity of fireworks, sparklers or bonfires. Fireworks contain explosive, flammable substances, which can cause serious injury to an individual or damage to property. Children using sparklers should also be closely supervised. The safety advice below can help make Halloween a safe, enjoyable time for everyone. FIREWORKS AND SPARKLERS • Fireworks require a licence - except indoor fireworks and sparklers. • It is illegal to possess, purchase, sell, handle or use fireworks except under licence. • Only adults should light or handle fireworks. • Never ever go back to a firework once lit - even if it does not go off. When watching fireworks, stand well back • It is an offence to throw fireworks in the street or other public places. • Always supervise children around fireworks. • Never give sparklers to children under the age of five. • Light sparklers one at time and always wear gloves. • Keep a bucket of water close by and put sparklers in it when they go out. • You can be fined up to £5,000 for breaking the law in relation to fireworks. The law clearly states that fireworks must be bought from a licensed dealer who is required to keep sales records. Fireworks bought from other sources could be of a sub-standard quality, with the potential to cause serious injury. - Fireworks that do not have instructions printed in English are ILLEGAL. - All bangers are ILLEGAL. - The purchase, possession or use of fireworks without a licence is an OFFENCE. We would also appeal to the community to help us stamp out illegal trading and misuse of fireworks by contacting local police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

MILLENNIUM INTEGRATED PRIMARY SCHOOL As part of our Wednesday afternoon Art Club, the children in KS2, with the guidance of one of our talented mums Lisa Foster, have been taking part in a community project run by Forestside Shopping Centre. The children were given a lifesized model of a calf to paint and decorate in the theme of Super Heroes. They worked really hard and turned the blank calf canvas into Captain Millennium. You can go and visit him at Forestside – he’d been delighted to see you! P2 recently marked the end of their Medieval Topic with a day of medieval celebrations. They had a jousting battle followed by a banquet and ballroom dancing. The court jesters then had to try and entertain the audience with their funny jokes! All the Princesses, Knights and Dragons had a great day!! Open Days - This year our Open Days are as follows: Thursday 8th December – 9:30am to 11am, 7pm to 9pm Thursday 5th January - 9:30am to 11am If you or anybody you know would like a place in our Nursery (morning or afternoon session) or Primary 1 in September 2017, please come along to any of these Open Day events. 38

ST ITA’S PRIMARY SCHOOL ECO Team has the very important job of ensuring our school is an environmentally friendly place. Our school now has Green Flag status. This year’s team will be in charge of recycling, composting materials, saving energy in our school and carrying out weekly spot checks on classes and awarding them Eco Warrior Award points for carrying out our Eco Code. We are also very lucky to have Ms. Smart working closely with all year groups to develop our school garden and grounds. All year groups will have the chance to plant different fruit, vegetables and flowers. At the start of each year P4 to P7 pupils select a boy and girl from their class to represent them on the ECO Team. The team will meet regularly with Miss Cunningham and Miss Houston to discuss and talk about their ideas, as well as carry out different duties that will contribute towards making our school an Eco-friendly school. ST JOSEPH’S PRIMARY SCHOOL Children in P2 went for an autumn walk and found lots of signs of autumn including plenty of fallen leaves. They had great fun collecting the leaves and throwing them up into the air. St Joseph’s pupils helped to launch Maths Week at St George’s Market. This is a place where maths takes place on a daily basis and it was great to be a part of the hustle and bustle of market life for the morning! Minister of Education Peter Weir and Lord Mayor of Belfast Brian Kingston were on hand to interact and to talk with the pupils about maths.
Staff in St Joseph’s had a special Friday Coffee Morning treat to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support, with lots of goodies for break time. A very special thanks to Mrs Boyle who co-ordinated the event. 40
