It’s going to be a busy month for celebrations - there’s Mother’s Day on 6th March, St Patrick’s Day on 17th March and Easter Sunday on 27th March followed by a couple of days of holiday! And of course, the start of Spring - marked officially by the clocks springing forward one hour at 1am on Easter Sunday 27th March. So that means it’s been almost 6 months since the clock in my Mum’s kitchen told the time properly. I’ve been meaning to get the ladder out to climb up and fix it, but of course haven't got around to it. I’ll admit to the lazy thought - if I just hold on a couple of weeks, I wont have to! So, for Mother’s Day and Easter, we have lots of local businesses advertising special offers & gift ideas throughout the magazine, just for you! Feel free to take advantage. And we have a new bookshop in Carryduff - opened by Emain Publishing - at the shopping centre. Isn’t it lovely to see a new business actually opening up in Carryduff instead of closing down? You can read all about it on pages 9 and 33. Until next time!

Whether you’re trying a bold new look or just trying to tame tangles, gadgets can help - and some of them promise to do everything from straightening to styling. Take the Oprah-recommended InStyler Wet 2 Dry, for example: it looks like a typical curler but its rotating barrel means it can straighten, curl and add volume and shine while it dries your hair. At £79.99 it’s quite pricey for a styler and some users found it a bit awkward to use, but if you get the hang of it it promises to style and dry five times faster than other devices. If you’re a fan of hair straighteners you’ll know that some models are smoother and less snaggy than others. The £44.95 Glamoriser reckons it has the answer: its ceramic floating plates are designed to glide over your hair, and something called Black Diamond Oil in the plates apparently helps keep every strand nice and shiny. We’re not entirely sold on those claims, but as a straightener the Glamoriser works really well and is a great buy. Fancy spending a bit more? The £165 T3 SinglePass X uses a microchip to constantly measure and adjust the temperature of the plates so that you can smooth and
6
style without frazzling your hair. It’s particularly good for very long or coarse hair and it styles very quickly, although the price tag is likely to put plenty of people off. Another Oprah recommendation is the Bed Head Deep Waver, which is currently the number 1 best-selling hair waver on Amazon US. Over here it’s called the Toni & Guy Deep Waver, and the £25 styler offers 25 heat options for the perfect wave. Sometimes hair needs to be removed rather than restyled, and technology has a place there too: IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) hair removals promise to remove unwanted hair without the discomfort or outright pain of traditional hair removal. It isn’t very effective on light hair colours but it does a good job on dark hair, and while £225 for a Philips Lumea Precision Plus sounds pricey, it’s a lot cheaper than getting a course of IPL treatment at a beauty salon. Just one word of warning: don’t use it if you’ve been tanning. Like any kind of light therapy, IPL can have side-effects on skin that’s been exposed to the sun or to self-tanning products. So far we’ve concentrated on products for women, but there are gadgets for the boys too. The rise of
the hipster hasn’t escaped the notice of grooming device manufacturers, and dull old clippers have been eclipsed by all kinds of male grooming products. There’s even a hairdryer designed specifically for blokes: the BaByliss Pro Italia Brava (£120), which has been developed in association with Ferrari so it goes round your head faster. Joking aside it does differ from normal unisex dryers as it can be set to run much hotter than traditional dryers. Men will also find all kinds of gadgets for manscaping their body hair. One of the best is Braun’s Cruzer 6 Body (£33), a showerproof trimmer with attachments ranging from 0.6mm to 8mm for every conceivable location and a Gilette blade for when you want to shave everything off. If you’d rather just take care of your beard and bonce, the Cruzer Beard&Head is currently £25 online and comes with two sets of blade guards: 1-11mm and 1020mm. Images L to R: Glamoriser hair straightener; Toni & Guy Deep Barrel Waver; Philips Lumea IPL hair remover; Braun Cruzer body trimmer.

• 2 tbsp olive oil • 600g skinless chicken breast fillets, cut into chunks • 225g button mushrooms
Heat the oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat. Add the chicken chunks and fry for 4-5 minutes, turning frequently until golden brown all over. Transfer to a plate with a slotted spoon.
• 200g shallots, peeled • 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed • 300ml red wine • 200ml chicken or vegetable stock • 2 tbsp sun-dried tomato puree • 1 bay leaf
Add the button mushrooms and shallots to the pan and fry for 5 minutes until just beginning to brown. Add the garlic and fry for a further minute then return the chicken to the pan and stir in the red wine, stock, tomato puree and bay leaf.
• 2tbsp cornflour • Sprigs of fresh parsley to garnish • Sautéed potatoes and steamed green beans, to serve This dish freezes well, so it’s worth doubling up the quantities to freeze away half for another day. Allow to cool completely then spoon into a shallow freezer-proof container and freeze for up to 2 months. Defrost thoroughly then reheat in a flameproof casserole until piping hot.
12
Bring to the boil then reduce the heat, cover and simmer gently for 25-30 minutes or until the chicken and onions are tender. Blend the cornflour and 2 tbsp water to a smooth paste then stir the paste into the pan. Simmer gently for further 2-3 minutes, stirring all the time, until the liquid has thickened. Serve with sautéed potatoes and steamed green beans and garnish with parsley sprigs.

loss, mouth ulcers, anaemia and unexpected weight loss, alongside gastrointestinal symptoms, can indicate Coeliac disease. Diagnosis is by a blood test and biopsy. Both tests are only accurate if you’re still eating gluten, so you’ll need If you suffer from bloating, nausea, to continue eating gluten until the vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, tests are complete. If Coeliac disease stomach cramps or irritable bowel is diagnosed, you must avoid gluten syndrome (IBS), maybe you should permanently.
be. However, ALWAYS see your GP (rather than self-diagnosing) if these symptoms are severe and persistent, especially if you have blood in your stools, vomiting, excessive bloating or very painful stomach cramps - it may indicate more serious medical conditions.
WHEAT INTOLERANCE/SENSITIVITY Wheat intolerance or sensitivity is much more common than wheat allergy. Symptoms can develop some hours after eating wheat, which can make the condition hard to pinpoint, and it’s not something your GP can test for.
Wheat allergy, wheat sensitivity/ intolerance and Coeliac disease are often confused, so let’s get them straight.
Try eliminating wheat for four weeks to see if your symptoms improve (ensuring you replace it with healthy alternatives like rice, corn, buckwheat pasta and quinoa). Remember that wheat is in most breads, cakes, pastas, pastries, cereals, couscous, biscuits, beer, soy sauce and hydrolysed vegetable protein (HVP), and is a hidden ingredient in many other products. Keep a food diary in case another food type, such as dairy, is the culprit – but don’t eliminate whole food groups long-term without consulting your GP.
WHEAT ALLERGY If you are truly wheat allergic, eating wheat will rapidly provoke allergy symptoms such as itching, rashes, sneezing and wheezing. You’ll need to avoid wheat in any form and see your GP. COELIAC DISEASE Coeliac disease is an autoimmune condition that affects around 1% of people in the UK and often goes undiagnosed. In Coeliac sufferers, the intestinal lining becomes damaged because it can’t absorb gluten, a protein found in foods including wheat, barley and rye. Tiredness, hair

whether you’re sensitive to all wheat products or just some. This can depend on the process the wheat has undergone; some people can tolerate toast and pasta better than bread, because the heating process makes the wheat more digestible. Supermarket bread may be less digestible than traditional bakery bread, as supermarkets use an accelerated bread-making process. IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME (IBS) If your symptoms don’t seem specifically tied to wheat, you may have IBS. While the causes are not entirely clear, stress, illness, high-fat or high-fibre foods seem to precipitate attacks, making bowel function erratic and causing gastrointestinal symptoms. Probiotic supplements or foods can help, as can medication prescribed by your GP. Tackling Wheat Sensitivity and IBS: The FODMAP diet Designed originally for people with (IBS), the wheat-free low-FODMAP diet eliminates Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides And Polyols - types of carbohydrates that aren’t easily digested and may cause bacterial growth, leading to diarrhoea and bloating. The FODMAP diet should be followed under a dietician’s guidance to ensure you stay healthy and follow it correctly, as it’s quite complex. Your GP can give you a referral.

A new chapter begins for local Publisher’s 1st Bookshop! Local Northern Ireland publisher, Emain Publications has opened up their 1 st Bookshop at Carryduff Shopping Centre. ‘The Bookshop’, supported by the Department for Social Development and Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council sells unique local children’s books, offers local authors an opportunity to showcase their work and provides a creative space for authors of all ages to write, get published and take part in community activities. Emain Publications was established in 2012 by local author Shauna Dunlop to publish stories she had written about her baby daughter Orlagh Rose, after she passed away with a rare illness when she was only 9 months old. Four of the forty Orlagh Rose stories have now been published. ‘The Bookshop’ will also sell many of the other titles published by Emain, including the amazing ‘Ferrari Adventure’, written by young Aidan Gormley form Omagh, at only 7 years old; the unique mystery adventure novel ‘Russ on the Suss’ by Mo Maher from Co. Down, inspired by her grandson and the unforgettable tale about ‘Chansey the Chicken and the Plum Tree’, authored by well known local teacher John Conlon from Co. Fermanagh. If you dream of being a published author, call in and chat to the Emain Publications team. Have a peep through the door of ‘The Writing Room’ and see how this space could be of benefit to you. ‘The Bookshop’ is also interested in receiving submissions from local self-published authors. ‘The Bookshop’ is the first of it’s kind in Northern Ireland, a bookshop where you can not only buy books, but also a place to write and become a published author yourself, maybe even see your own book on the bookshelves! ‘The Bookshop’ begins a new creative era in the Carryduff local community, by providing an accessible space to read, to write, to learn, to buy a unique Northern Ireland developed children’s book or even to enjoy a drink and a snack. This new initiative can only be of benefit to the community and will hopefully ignite what will soon become a thriving creative hub, right here on our doorstep.

Alderman Allan Ewart, Chairman of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council’s Development Committee said “I am delighted to see the first of our ‘Pop Up’ businesses opening in the new Council area. This initiative allows small businesses to test the water in their chosen markets in vacant retail units, while promoting local regeneration. We wish Emain Publications good luck and hope the business prospers and grows”.

Nature Focus In another of a new series of articles about our local environment, Helen Long writes about her observations of nature a bit further afield, outside Carryduff. This month Helen visits Edenderry.... EDENDERRY village must be one of the best kept secrets in the whole of the Greater Belfast area! And I think it needs to stay that way, in order to retain its unique rural charm. It’s a mere four miles from the city, and yet on entering it, you feel as if you are stepping back into the 19 th century; and into a completely different world.

I am indebted to the National Trust for most of the information that follows. The name comes from the Gaelic EADAN DOIRE—front of the oak grove, and the village owes its existence to Belfast’s linen industry, this association going back over 200 years. A bleachgreen was actually established as early as 1780. Apart from a short deviation into flour milling, powered by the nearby river, it returned to linen production in 1866, when it was bought by John Shaw Brown. He converted the mill to a weaving factory, which soon blossomed into a successful linen empire. The village grew up around this factory, with about 90 terraced houses
being built for the workers. These still form the basis of the small community, and recent development has been careful to retain the style of the existing 19 th century architecture. Brown was obviously a man of vision, innovation and humanity. He had a power plant installed in the factory, which produced coal gas for the houses. He also ensured that the workers had access to a number of baths in the factory and - most bizarrely - in the village shop! Now there’s a thought for our local Spar!! More of his visionary ideas were evident in his provision of allotments for the workers, enabling them to grow their own vegetables cheaply and therefore eat more healthily. (Amazingly, the current residents have developed their own wonderful 21st century allotments, in what used to be a boggy patch of land: see the photographic evidence above.) Even the social life of the work-force was catered for, as Brown organised a ‘club’ in the village, where he held weekly dances for his work-force. I have nothing but the utmost admiration for such a captain of Victorian industry, who went the extra mile to ensure a better life for his workers. And I can’t help feeling his spirit is still alive and well in the village today, as on a recent visit I noted a sign indicating their plans for a community celebration. Long may that spirit survive and prosper in the enchanting village of Edenderry!

CARR PRIMARY SCHOOL Book week in Carr Primary School ran from 1st-5th February 2016. During this week a variety of different book themed activities were completed. We teamed up with NI Cancer Fund for Children to host a sponsored read. The Read On was a huge success with every child taking part. A variety of blankets, cushions, beanbags and even tents were brought into school to make our Read On as comfortable as possible. As Carr Primary School were the first the school in Northern Ireland to register to take part we received a hamper of books to use in school. A representative from Cancer Fund for Children presented the hamper to some of our pupils during Assembly (above right). To celebrate the success of Book Week we held a competition. Key Stage One's task was to decorate a "thing" as a character from their favourite book. Key Stage Two had to dress as their favourite book complete with front cover and blurb. The entries were absolutely fantastic and he amount of hard work that our families put into their creations was fabulous. Photographs show our winning entries (right) and some runner ups (below).
PTA EVENTS Guess the age of the teddy competition raised ÂŁ42 and the winner was Matthew Rea who guessed 71!! Well Done Matthew and enjoy your prize!! (pictured right) Pancake Day A huge thank you to the parents who came into school and made the pancakes for the children's break.

ST JOSEPH’S PRIMARY SCHOOL Eunan, Lorcan, Ciaran and Cian represented our school in the Cumann na mBunscoil an Duin quiz. 19 different schools sent teams to answer questions about the GAA, Irish history, mythology and geography. The boys did brilliantly – just missing out on representing Down at the Ulster finals. Their general knowledge, hard work and impeccable behaviour were a credit to our school. Well Done Boys! The Primary Five pupils visited The Linen Museum in Lisburn as part of their World Around Us topic work about ‘Textiles’. We had a fantastic day seeing how linen makes its journey from the flax plant growing in the field, to the finished fabric. We also learned the importance of linen production in Northern Ireland. The second part of our day was a workshop where we got the opportunity to make natural dyes and to use them for tie dying. This was great fun! All in all, it was a great learning experience. Oran McMeel writes about a visit to the Giants game at the Odyssey: “My class and I went to see the Belfast Giants playing in the Odyssey Arena. We had to sit down and we were given programmes. After the first period, a lot of us went to the shop and bought sweets and popcorn, which was spilled everywhere!! In the game, there was a noise-o-meter and we broke it twice. There was a type of disco and we all got up and danced at our seats. After the second period, I bought a horn and sneaked up on Ryan and scared the living daylights out of him! We all started a chant and used the horn, which really annoyed Jessica, Aoife and Niamh! The game went to overtime and then penalties. The Giants won – yeh!! I really had a super time!!”
