There’s plenty going on over the next two months - Pancake Tuesday on 4th March and the beginning of Lent, St Patrick’s Day on 17th March, which means a day off for most people. Then Mother’s Day on Sunday 30th March, which happens to be the day the clocks go forward (at 1am). So all the Mums out there hoping to sleep in a bit longer on Mother’s Day will be disappointed to lose an hour instead! Then in April we have Easter on the 20th , and the Easter school holidays. Hopefully Spring will have sprung by then - at least the days will be getting longer from the end of March (if not any warmer!). I’m really looking forward to the Spring this year - it seems to have been all rain, rain, rain recently. It’s definitely on its way - my miniature daffodils by the front door are growing steadily, and they really do cheer me up. To quote Shakespeare - “April hath put a spirit of youth in everything”. Bring on the spirit of youth! Until next time...

The Auction in Killybuck By Louis J Walsh The auction in Killybuck is set in 1914, 100 years ago, in North Antrim where Aunt Rebecca has a farm of land to sell. Her nephew would like to buy the farm but since he refuses to marry the girl his aunt has chosen for him, preferring his own choice of sweetheart, she refuses to lend him the money required to make the purchase. The local auctioneer, aided and abetted by a few locals, set about thwarting the old girls wishes and by some very devious means conspire to get the farm for Robert John. This play is full of rich humour of the time and has become part of Ulster theatre folklore. A keen social history is shows us as we were 100 years ago and some might even suggest that nothing much has changed. Prepare to be moved, amused, entertained and even learn a little by watching this charming piece of Ulster theatre. Performances at Belvoir Players

ISA ALLOWANCE - USE IT OR LOSE IT The end of the tax year is coming up (5th April) so if you haven’t made use of your ISA allowance yet then don’t leave it too late. The limits for this year are £11,520 for adults (of which £5,760 can be into a cash ISA) and £3,720 for Junior ISAs. Unused allowance cannot be rolled over, so if you don’t use it by the deadline then you lose it forever. ISAs offer a straightforward way for you to save or invest without having to pay tax on the interest or investment returns. Cash ISAs can be a great place for short-term savings or rainy day money, while Stocks & Shares ISAs tend to offer better longterm returns but with ups and downs along the way. Like all financial products you should review your ISAs on a regular basis, to make sure you are still making the most of your money. The current rate of inflation is 1.9% (CPI – January 2014) so unless you are getting a return (or an interest rate) above this you are effectively losing the value of your money. You can easily transfer funds from an existing Cash ISA to a new one to get a better rate, or into a Stocks & Shares ISA if the money is for longer-term purposes and you are prepared to take some risk. The Bank of England has hinted that interest rates are going to stay low for the foreseeable future, so bear in mind that keeping substantial funds in cash may not be the best option. And don’t assume that your Stocks & Shares ISA is doing well just because it has gone up – some older ISAs offer very poor value compared to newer products with lower charges and better investment options. This is a good time to review ISAs as you can make use of both this year’s and next year’s ISA allowances in a short space of time. The new ISA limits for next tax year (from 6th April) have been confirmed as £11,880 for adults (of which £5,940 can be into a cash ISA) and £3,840 for Junior ISAs. The value of your investment can go down as well as up and you may not get back as much as you originally invested.
For further information, or to arrange a free review of existing ISAs, please contact Emma Greer; tel 07885 407604 or e-mail emma@freedom-financial.co.uk

Biblical Ballads
Helen Long, from Carryduff, Co Down, (and author of the Carryduff Focus Nature articles) has just published a booklet of poems about Bible stories and characters, called ‘Biblical Ballads’. Many of the poems arose out of the stories and people she had studied in her parish Home Group. Her aim was to put the stories into an easy-to-read, rhyming form, which would be accessible to everyone, even children. With this in mind, a simple illustration accompanies each poem; these were all done by Helen’s friend, Pat Neill. Copies, costing £3, may be obtained from Helen by emailing ehelenlong@hotmail.com or calling 077 292 363 91. All profits will go to the NI Chest, Heart & Stroke charity.

It was brilliant to see all the children along with the teachers doing some dance moves and having lots of fun. P1 – People Who Help Us The Primary 1 children are learning about people who help us. They have had some special visitors into to talk to them and have been playing in their class ‘hospital’. The children really looked forward to a visit from the local vet in February.

Appeal for Witnesses
Police in Castlereagh are appealing for witnesses to a road traffic collision on Manse Road, Castlereagh (BT6) on 10th February. A white coloured van (VRM UEZ 4352) overturned at the junction with Church Road, Castlereagh at around 5.15pm. It's understood a dark three door Rover car may have pulled onto the Manse Road from Church Road just in front of the van prior to the collision and police are keen to identify and speak to the driver. Officers are also keen to hear from anyone else who was in the area at the time and who may have witnessed the RTC. The number to call is 0845 600 8000
St Ita’s Primary School St Ita’s pupils recently took part in the Masterpiece for the Mac 2013. The standard of work was extremely high again this year and the judging panel found it enormously difficult to choose the winners of this year’s competition. Congratulations to Aimee and Anna from P6 who both had winning entries in the 2013 Masterpiece for the Mac competition. In class, pupils studied famous artists and then they produced their own masterpiece in the style of their favourite artist. Anna was inspired by Andy Warhol and Aimee’s inspiration was Matisse. Well done to Aimee and Anna whose artwork will be exhibited in the MAC this February. The judging panel liked Aimee’s masterpiece so much that it has been chosen as the Overall Winner of the competition. Aimee’s class were invited to the Launch of the Masterpiece for the Mac and got an exclusive tour of the MAC galleries and their two theatre spaces. Aimee and Anna were presented with a beautiful art box.

St Ita’s hosted this year’s Ormeau Area Credit Union Quiz. Eight teams from local primary schools including Holy Rosary, St Michael’s, St Joseph’s and St Ita’s took part. The quiz consisted of 12 rounds of questions which at times challenged teachers as well as pupils. At the end of the last round of questions, St Ita’s triumphant Credit Union Quiz only 4 points separated first and last. In the Under 10 team with Principal, Mrs Browne and category, St Ita’s and St Joseph’s were tied at the top of P7 teacher, Mrs Kavanagh. the leader board. A very tense tie-break then took place which saw St Ita’s triumph! In the over 10 category St Ita’s lost by a single point to St Joseph’s. Well done to St Ita’s and to all the other teams who made the quiz such an enjoyable and competitive day. Many thanks to Julie Mullan and all her team from Ormeau Credit Union for organising the day. St Ita’s now go to the Regional Final in March. We wish them good luck! Please mention the BT8 Focus Magazine when contacting advertisers

Spamount Congregational Church A very special night of Christmas Music and Carol Singing was held in Spamount Congregational Church, Knockbracken, on Saturday evening 7th December 2013. The church, (known as the Church in the Community) offered Cairnshill Primary School this opportunity to raise funds to purchase a badly needed Overhead Projector. The carol singing was led by a group of musicians playing brass instruments (a deeply rich and resonant sound) and various singers from the church took part. A number of carols were sung interspersed with the individual items from the singers. The audience included friends of the school and members of the church congregation. At the conclusion of the evening Rev Jim Lyons presented Mrs Graham (Acting Principal) with a cheque for £410.50 pounds. He emphasised the church’s support for Cairnshill School as our local school. Mrs Graham replied expressing her gratitude to Rev Lyons and other members of the congregation for their interest and generosity. She intimated that further ventures could be anticipated between the local school and local church in the future thus forging a community vision and friendship between the two institutions.
