Welcome

Contents

Hello again everyone,

Articles & Features:

I’m not an extreme hoarder like those poor souls on reality TV who cant get into rooms for the piles of stuff, but I do have my moments. (I’ve been known to go out to the bin to retrieve something the husband was trying to throw out). We alternate between good cop and bad cop - sometimes I take the head staggers and want to throw everything out but the husband is the voice of reason and we don't. Other times I have to count to 10 when he wants to throw something out when he just doesn't understand how useful it is (or could be, in the not too distant future ...hopefully).

Anyway, in April, the husband decided IT IS TIME. To tackle the dreaded garage. I will admit to being sceptical at first, but new storage things were bought and assembled, piles of keeping / not sure / throwing out were created for my inspection and it’s definitely looking better already. I’m sure there’s also ‘stuff’ that has just disappeared. Mmmmm. What is it about this accumulation of stuff? I really envy anyone who can keep their life pared down to the minimum. In the year 3 BC (before children) when we moved into our house in Carryduff, we’d come from a two up two down terrace and hadn't got enough furniture to fill the rooms but we still had boxes of ‘stuff’. Actually I think one of those is still up in the attic. Now, the attic, well that’s another story! Have a great month. Until next time....

We’ve come a long way from the days when the most interesting accessory you could get for your car was a set of fluffy dice. There are all kinds of useful accessories for in-car entertainment, navigation and safety, and you can even get gadgets that can help you hang on to your driving licence. If you’ve ever worried that you might be over the drink driving limit (which has just been lowered in Scotland), a portable breathalyser is a good investment. The well regarded Alcosense range starts at £25 and rises to £60 for the Elite model, which knows about the lower limits in Scotland, Ireland and much of Europe. If that’s too pricey Alcosense makes disposable tubes at £4.99 for two. Garmin’s £120 Dash Cam 10HD also has safety on its mind. It is a video camera that sits on your windscreen and continually records what’s in front of you, eliminating any doubt about who’s to blame in the event of an accident. The camera uses microSD memory cards and it does everything automatically so you don’t even need to remember to turn it on. If you’re worried

6

about damage occurring when you’re parked, such as people shunting you in a supermarket and fleeing the scene while you’re still shopping, look for one with a Park Mode to catch the culprits. If entertainment is your thing you’ll be spoilt for choice. You can pick up an in-car DVD player for £70 or a twin pack for £120, or you could invest in a cheap Android tablet and let the kids watch movies on that: headrest holders are widely available. If your car stereo is showing its age, you can replace it with an all -singing, all-dancing model for as little as £43, although if you want the ultimate in audio you’ll pay a bit more than that: for example, Pioneer’s SPH-DA120 car stereo, which uses Apple’s CarPlay technology to work with an iPhone, is currently £339. You don’t need to spend that much for a smartphone connection, though: there is a wide range of good quality car stereos for around £50 to £70 with connections for smartphones and/or USB flash drives. If you’d rather go wireless, gadgets can help with that too. Parrot’s MKi9200 adds

Bluetooth wireless technology to your existing car stereo, enabling you to stream music (or audiobooks, or podcasts) from your phone. It also adds handsfree calling and voice control, meaning you can navigate your music library without taking your eyes off the road. It’s currently £139.99, and (optional) installation is around £50. One of the most useful in-car gadgets may be EE’s Buzzard 2, which provides a Wi-Fi hotspot in your car via the magic of 4G mobile broadband. That’s brilliant if you tend to have a carful of smartphone or tablet-wielding children, or if you need to get online with your laptop when you’re out and about. You can pick one up for free if you sign up for a two-year, £10 per month contract, but keep an eye on the data limits: that £10 gets you 1GB of data transfer per month, so it’s not a great idea to let the kids stream endless Netflix programs when you’re on the road. . Images left to right: Alcosense portable breathalyser; Pioneer CarPlay stereo; Parrot MKi9200 hands-free kit; EE Buzzard 2 portable Wi-Fi.

CHANGES TO PENSIONS Major changes to pensions were introduced in April, so if you are over the age of 55 it is worth being aware of your options. When you access a personal pension you can normally take 25% of your pension pot as a tax free lump sum. Under the old pension rules, the remaining 75% had to be used to provide an income, designed to last for the rest of your life. There were two main ways to do this – buy an annuity or set up pension drawdown. An annuity will provide a guaranteed income for life, which may suit some people who need to know their bills will be covered. The disadvantage of annuities is that they are very inflexible, and cannot be changed once they are set up, even if your circumstances change. Annuity rates are also currently quite poor as they are determined by interest rates, as well as life expectancy. Pension drawdown allows you to keep your money invested, and draw an income as you need it. Under the old rules, the amount you could take each year was restricted, and any money left behind after death was taxed very heavily. The new rules mean that everyone will be entitled to pension drawdown with no restriction – so you can withdraw your whole pension pot as a lump sum if you want. 75% will usually still be taxable, so if you do take the whole pension pot you could end up paying higher levels of tax, as well as potentially losing out on means-tested benefits. The other danger is that pensions are intended to provide an income for your whole retirement, so you could run out of money if you take too much out or the money is not invested carefully. There are lots of benefits to the new rules, in terms of flexibility and allowing people to spend their own money as they see fit. There are also lots of potential pitfalls, in terms of tax and investment risk. Be aware that not all pension companies will be able to offer full flexibility and they are not allowed to give advice, only information. It is also possible to transfer a final salary pension into a personal pension to take advantage of the new rules. This means giving up a guaranteed pension, but there can be circumstances where having access to the money makes this worthwhile.

The value of your pension and the income it produces can fall as well as rise. You may get back less than you invested. For further information or to arrange a consultation on your pension options, please contact Emma Greer; tel 07885 407604 or e-mail emma@freedom-financial.co.uk.

Preheat the oven to 190C, 375F, Gas 5. • 4 firm beefsteak tomatoes • 3 tbsp Virgin olive oil • 1 onion, peeled and finely chopped • 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed • 75g fresh white breadcrumbs • 2 tbsp fresh chopped parsley • 1 tbsp fresh chopped mint • 2 tsp capers, drained and rinsed • Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Replace the breadcrumbs with cous cous if liked. Place 115g of cous cous in a heatproof bowl and pour over boiling water to cover. Stir once then place a plate on top of the bowl and leave for 10 minutes or until the liquid has been absorbed. Fluff up the grains with a fork then stir into the fried onion mixture as above. Add some toasted pine nuts, chopped dried apricots, fresh chopped coriander and a little harissa paste for a more exotic flavour.

20

Use a sharp knife to slice the tops off the tomatoes and slice a thin sliver from the base of each tomato to prevent them wobbling in the dish. Use a teaspoon to scoop out the seeds and flesh from each tomato. Finely chop and reserve the flesh but discard the seeds. Place the tomato shells in a shallow ovenproof dish. Heat half the olive oil in a medium-sized frying pan. Add the chopped onion and fry over a medium-high heat for 5 minutes until beginning to soften. Add the garlic and fry for a further 4-5 minutes until tender and golden. Stir in the chopped tomato flesh, breadcrumbs, parsley, mint and capers and season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Spoon the breadcrumb mixture into the tomato shells, pressing it down gently then top with the lids. Drizzle over the rest of the olive oil and bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes until the tomatoes are just tender. Serve hot or cold.

their wealth and importance. The ‘Chinese room’ was a feature of many a stately home, from Chatsworth to the Prince Regent’s Royal Pavilion in Brighton, the latter an extraordinary Oriental-style palace, crammed with objects and furniture from China. As time went on, not only did Chinese factories begin to fuse European and native styles to suit their buyers’ tastes, but also English designers and craftspeople began to imitate Oriental designs. Thomas Chippendale was one well-known example, Furnishings and accessories employing latticework and from the Far East seemed lacquer in his influential furniture wonderfully exotic when they first pattern books. arrived here centuries ago. Now And then came another silk and lacquer, blue-and-white enormous shift in style when, in china and bamboo have become 1854, Japan resumed trade with a highlight of our interiors, says the West after a break of more Katherine Sorrell. than two centuries. Europe was Exciting, mysterious, irresistible… rumours of the treasures of the East encouraged 16th century Western explorers to push back the boundaries of the known world, but it was not until the late 17th century that the English East India Company secured its trading post in Taiwan and began to trade regularly with China. Tea was the first import of significance, and raw silk, too; while buying and displaying costly furnishings from afar became a way for the higher echelons of society to show off

22

flooded with imports: everything from bronzes and silks to kimonos, lacquers, fans and woodblock prints (the latter a huge influence on Impressionist painting and the Art Nouveau movement). Christopher Dresser was the first European designer to visit Japan after 1854, and both his book on the country’s art, design and architecture and his own designs for textiles, wall coverings, ceramics, glassware and metalware helped perpetuate the fashion for Japonisme at the end of the 19th century.

The fashion for Eastern objects and designs had taken firm hold, and eventually percolated down from the piles of the aristocracy to reach ordinary people’s homes. Take the almost ubiquitous Willow Pattern, for example, which has been found in households up and down the country since the early 19th century. And who these days does not own a piece of blue and white porcelain, a ginger jar, a Chinese rug, a ‘coolie’ style lampshade or a rattan side table, for example? Oriental-inspired fabrics, wallpapers, furniture and accessories can be used to make a statement in any room, or can blend gently into an eclectic interior, while the colours – rich, warm red, gorgeous blues, yellows and greens, touches of black and highlight of gold – are highly appealing and can be employed as subtle touches or all-over schemes. Whether it be a precious, handmade antique, an item specially mass-produced for the European market or a Western item that has been influenced by Oriental designs, we love to incorporate beautiful pieces that demonstrate the craftsmanship, the materials and the styles that have become symbolic of Eastern cultures… just like the aristocrats of the 17th and 18th centuries. Fashions may come and go, but Oriental style has become a timeless staple.

Revered as the ‘Mother of Waters’, the Mekong flows north to south across Laos where much of its course marks the border with Thailand. As in other countries, it’s a precious lifeline providing rich agricultural land and fishing as well as transport in remote areas. Up in the northern hills, the Mekong is at the heart of tribal legends, the mythical home of a ‘naga’ snake which must be appeased and thanked for its gift. But in the ancient capital of Luang Prabang, it’s a magnet for visitors dreaming of an unforgettable trip upstream on a long narrow boat. With jungle-clad hills heaving along the banks like prehistoric creatures, rocks and islands, rapids, sand banks and treacherous shallows, it’s an adrenalin-filled journey, a test of endurance and faith for passengers and captain alike. It’s cold and eerie in the early morning mist but later, when the sun beats down on the river, no one minds the generous showers of spray sweeping under the rickety awning. This isn’t about comfort, just sheer excitement, with ‘no standing please’ but you can dip your hand in the water with no effort at all. In the dry

28

season, only the narrowest boats can sail up river, five people aside and pilot squatting Asian-style at the front. Meanwhile birds flitter in the bushes, goats and buffaloes graze on the banks and here and there, wooden huts nestle under the palm trees with luminous patches of tapioca and maize tumbling down to the water. Women with babies on their back bob along sandy trails, men tend their fields, others fish or pan for gold. There are houseboats draped in laundry, tiny skiffs anchored with bamboo poles and clusters of pink blossom splashing colour in the greenery. After two hours or so, the boat reaches the sacred Pak Ou caves cut into the limestone cliffs. A floating platform leads to the shore then it’s a hot climb up the steps to see the first cave, crammed with thousands of Buddha images, and the second, higher up, 50 metres deep and tucked behind an old wooden portal. It’s best to carry a torch for you never know what could be lurking in the dark. They say that long ago the King and his Court used to row up river once a year on an overnight pilgrimage,

leaving fresh offerings of Buddha images in the caves. So the tradition began, totalling some 4000 miniature statues to date, revered by pilgrims and saffronrobed monks but drawing the largest crowds during the Lao New Year. Yet, tourists who come this far spend little time inside the caves for they are soon lured back into the sunlight for superb views over the Mekong and its confluence with the Nam Ou. There’s a chance to visit the nearby tribal village, a colourful place where women weave on the doorstep and along the path, and every hut on stilts is draped with shawls and scarves no one can resist. By early afternoon, day trippers return to Luang Prabang while the more adventurous continue their journey along the Nam Ou where bamboo and teak mingle their reflections in glistening waters turning from emerald to blue. Lofty flame trees rise above the jungle and sometimes you spot a herd of elephants brought down to the river for their daily bath by mahouts in conical hats. Time seems to stand still.

Movie Focus

By Peter Stevenson

AT THE CINEMA: Cinderella U (105 mins I cringe, I really do, what suggested to Disney that it would be a good idea to trawl through their back catalogue of classic animations and turn them into live action ‘classics’? It is true, years ago, Disney studios successfully revived the wonderful 101 Dalmatians with Glenn Close as everyone’s favourite villain Cruella De Vil but surely this was just a lucky aberration? Would it work with Cinderella? Along with Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella is the very paragon of a fairy tale, especially the Disney version (based on Charles Perrault’s gentler version and not that of the excessively violent version by the Brothers Grimm, published some 200 years after Perrault’s) so how could it be re-made? The answer to Disney’s prayers came along in the form of Kenneth Branagh…apparently, who, in his director’s chair, tries to shake up and update the traditional fairy-tale paradigm for the Frozen generation. Let’s look at the villains first – they’re the most fun. If ever a tale warned against a stepfamily, this is it. Cate Blanchett takes on the role of the Wicked Stepmother: devious, cruel and smoulderingly selfish, she is given some real depth by writers Aline Brosh McKenna and Chris Weitz, even exploring why she is ‘Wicked’. Holliday Grainger and Sophie McShera are spectacularly camp as the Ugly Stepsisters, delightfully unpleasant and (ironically) devilishly cartoonish. Even Lucifer the cat is vindictive enough to earn his name. Cinderella (Lily James) and the Prince (Richard Madden) are weak characters, neither comfortable in traditional gender roles, nor as 21st Century role models. Helena Bonham Carter plays Cinders’ Fairy Godmother and, although she is only in one scene, has such fun in full panto mode that she is truly scene stealing. PLEASE, DISNEY, PLEASE, TAKE MORE CARE WITH Beauty and the Beast! 2 / 5

On DVD: Dumb and Dumber To 15 (109 mins) I feel so OLD!!! I can remember renting Dumb and Dumber on video back in 1994 and since then it has become a firm favourite in our household, whether we laugh at Harry’s (Jeff Daniels) getting his tongue stuck to a ski-lift or guffaw at Lloyd’s (Jim Carrey) revenge by laxative, it never fails to make me smile. But enough strolling down memory lane; the geniuses are back! Mary Samsonite (Swanson) is now but a faded memory, now Christmas and Dunne have more pressing issues but I won’ t give away what they are, save to say that they must track down Harry’s newly-discovered, equally dim daughter or the pair will never be the same again! It is a brave move (or is it dumb?), when a movie has had such an impact, to reunite cast and crew twenty years later for a completely different adventure yet still in the same comic vein. Nevertheless they have tried, with mixed results: Carrey and Daniels are still just as lovable, despite their characters’ lack of brainpower and they are given some nuggets of comedy gold to work with thanks to the always politically incorrect Farrelly Brothers (who both wrote and directed this movie). However, this is where the positives end. In its quest to provide a new story, the movie becomes over-complicated and even slow in parts, with sparse jokes giving way to plot (never a good thing in a comedy). There are still however, links to the first film: the dog van, reuniting with Petey, a rendezvous with nemesis Seabass, but all of these incidents seem contrived and only there for nostalgia. All in all, it is a better than average comic sequel but I expected it to be so much better. 3 / 5 34

Nature Focus In another of our series of articles about our local environment, Helen Long writes about her observations of nature, right here in Carryduff

Butterflies must surely be among the most delightful and engaging insects we have in and around Carryduff and Moneyreagh. They seem such insubstantial creatures, and yet some of them can travel hundreds of miles! It is their sheer beauty, and the miraculous way they manage to transform from ugly caterpillars into marvels of colour and symmetry which we find so appealing. Everybody - especially gardeners - knows the common Cabbage White, but the others are stained with the widest variety of tints and hues to be found on the artist’s palette!

Peacock

My personal favourite is the Peacock. It is named after the bird because its markings resemble the eye patterns on the peacock’s tail. If you look closely, you will see what I mean about symmetry. All the markings on one wing are balanced on the other - in amazing and intricate detail! This one is drinking deeply from a buddleia in my garden. That is the plant that they favour most, so if you want to attract more butterflies to your garden, grow a buddleia. But remember to cut it back hard after flowering, otherwise it will get very leggy and a bit unwieldy. The much more common Small Tortoiseshell is a wonder to behold. Just look at the pattern of mauve/blue splashes along the outer edge of the wings! And, although they may not be visible here, the antennae have beautiful horizontal stripes. This little fellow is perched on my verbena bonarensis - a real magnet for both bees and butterflies. It is easy to grow, but probably needs to be replaced either annually or every two years. It can grow to about five feet.

Small Tortoiseshell

Red Admiral 36

My other favourite butterfly is the Red Admiral. The one pictured here is on my hydrangea. There is a vivid contrast on this type, between the white and orange patterning and the black/dark brown of the rest of its deep damask’d wings. And once again the perfect symmetry. I hope this will be a real butterfly summer, and that this little article will help you to identify some of these spectacular wonders of the season. Helen Long

Many thanks to Allanna, our dance teacher, for her hard work and dedication. The girls had a brilliant time! The School Council got together and organised our Christmas Cracker Day – raising £300. They decided to invest in new playground equipment for break and lunchtimes. They tried out the balance body boards, the French skipping, bats and balls and hoola hoops.

MONEYREA PRIMARY SCHOOL PTA hosted its annual Spring Ball ‘Just the Tonic’ in the palatial surroundings of the La Mon Hotel and Country Club. This comedy themed night was the major fundraising event for our PTA this year and when all costs were met, a fantastic £4400 was raised: to be divided between the school, TinyLife and the NI Cancer Fund for Children. ‘Just the Tonic’ was a truly memorable event, raising a fantastic total for our worthy causes and bringing together our school community of friends old and new. Congratulations must go to our PTA and our event sub-committee consisting of; PTA Chairperson, Lynn McCreery, Dawn Welsh, Bill Pye, Jillian Ferris, Kate McAlpin, Julie Koortz and of course, event coordinator, Karen Hamilton, who did an amazing job! Later this term our Year 7 pupils are organising a sponsored walk to add to the funds raised for our charities. 40

CARRYDUFF HISTORICAL SOCIETY held their AGM on Monday 13th April and the following were elected to the Carryduff Historical Society Committee 2015/2016. Gordon Hunt - Chairperson/Publicity Secretary, John Cousins - Treasurer, Charlotte Murtagh, Gillian Hunt & Rod Maxwell - Programme Committee. The plan this year is to add all the photographs & videos we have to our website & Facebook pages. In addition we will be including Digging out the Royal Mail at Carryduff Corner 1963 photographs of Carryduff as it is today, to ensure that there is a comprehensive historical record for the future. Our latest inclusion on our Facebook page is a video titled 'Carryduff in the Big Snow of '63'. A rare gem! Have a look here https://www.facebook.com/ CarryduffHistoricalSociety Right is a photograph of the Carryduff Petrol Station in the 'Big Snow of '63'!

MILLENNIUM INTEGRATED PRIMARY SCHOOL To celebrate the Easter holidays the children at Millennium had an ‘Easter Bonnet Parade’. The children were asked to make an Easter themed bonnet. There were so many imaginative creations from floral hats, chicks, lambs and even giant bunnies! The Junior Board of Governors had a difficult time choosing the best boy and girl in each class. Everyone really put in a tremendous effort. Well done to all the winners. Millennium IPS boy’s Gaelic football team took part in the Allianz Cumann na mBunscol indoor football competition. The team beat St Joseph’s Carryduff by one goal to reach the semi-finals. The boys put on a brilliant performance but were narrowly beaten in the semi-finals by St Dallan’s. Well done to the team for their hard work and commitment this season and to Mr Donnelly for his coaching expertise. The soccer team also had a day out at Kilmore playing fields in Crossgar for a ‘Festival of Football’. The event was organised by Seamus Heath from Grassroots football and over 100 children from seven local primary schools attended. The Millennium boys were thrilled to win their section and come home with the silverware! Well done to both the A and B teams for their fantastic performances and to Coach Richard Robinson for his time and effort in developing the team this year.
