to your November magazine
Hello again everyone, Welcome to a jam-packed slightly-bigger-than-usual November issue. It’s kept me so busy I forgot it’s the magazine’s birthday. The Carryduff Focus is 9 years old now! Highlights in this issue include a report on the first year’s activity from the Carryduff Regeneration Forum. You’re also cordially invited to their AGM on 18th November and to the Christmas Tree lights switch on in early December. Read all about it on pages 30 and 31. We also have 2 job vacancies in this issue - one for the Spar in Carryduff (page 37) and the other for JW McCall’s Tile showroom (page 23). AND more special offers than in any other issue which is why my little note is a bit shorter than usual. That might be a good thing - no room to mention Christmas - ooops, sorry! just mentioned it..... Until next time....
Deirdre

Christmas is coming, and that means it’s shopping time - but what do you buy a gadget-crazy friend or relative? These are the best tech gifts for Christmas. 1. A TV streamer - Whether it’s Amazon’s £35 Fire TV stick or Google’s £30 Chromecast, a TV streamer can turn a flat screen TV into a smart TV. Amazon’s version gives you Amazon Prime Instant Video while Chromecast offers Netflix (if you subscribe). Both devices have a range of free services too. 2. FishHunter - Buying for a fisherman or woman? The £149 FishHunter is a sonar fish-finder that connects to your smartphone via Bluetooth and can find fish at depths of up to 120 feet - or you could buy the £100 WaterWolf HD fishing camera, which can record up to four hours of fishy footage at depths of up to 100m. 3. Windows 10 - If you didn’t like Windows 8 very much you’re not alone - but Windows 10 is much, much better and comes on a dizzying range of good quality, affordable laptops - for example, the superb HP Stream is £180. 4. TomTom Spark - Fitness trackers are everywhere, but the £189 TomTom Spark stands out from the crowd by offering music storage for 500 songs as well as
6
sleep and activity tracking. Too pricey? The excellent Fitbit Flex is £55. 5. Parrot drone - You can spend hundreds or even thousands of pounds on a drone quadricopter, but for £69 the Parrot Rolling Spider delivers an awful lot of fun for a relatively low price. It’s a flying drone, of course, but it can also roll along on removable wheels to perform acrobatics. 6. iPad Mini - The iPad Mini is the cheapest way to get the iPad experience, and its Retina display is a pleasure to look at. Prices start at £319. If that’s a bit steep, Tesco’s £99 Android-powered Hudl 2 and Amazon’s £79 Kindle Fire HD are great value for money. 7. ZX Spectrum - The iconic eighties home computer is back for 2015 in two forms: the £100 Vega, which is designed purely for games and only has a few buttons, and the Remastered, £89, which is a bluetooth keyboard that can play old Spectrum programs. The Vega comes preloaded with hundreds of games, while the Remastered can potentially access 10,000 Spectrum titles. 8. Skylanders, Disney Infinity or Minecraft anything - The big games for children this year are
Skylanders Superchargers and Disney Infinity 3.0, both of which are available for all major consoles and which use interchangeable toys to unlock ingame characters. And then there’s Minecraft, the global phenomenon: the children probably have the game already but there’s a huge range of officially licensed merchandise to choose from including action figures, books and soft toys. 9. Smartwatch - It isn’t cheap prices start at £299 - but Apple’s watch is the prettiest and most desirable smartwatch around, although it’s useless without an iPhone. If your recipient has an Android phone the Moto 360 2 (£229) is the best-looking Android Wear, while the £95 Pebble Steel works with Apple and Android and has garnered rave reviews. 10. Gift cards - Not strictly tech, but if you’re buying for someone who already has everything then iTunes, Google Play or Amazon gift cards are a good bet. iTunes cards are often sold with big discounts of up to 20%, so it’s worth hanging on for the deals before you buy.

Think Scottish Highland dancing, add to that the odd ceilidh step set to funky high-beat music, then you get the picture… It builds gradually so you can find a pace that is right for you. Low impact or go for it with high intensity - your choice! Plus there’s some exercises for toning your wobbly bits too. And it’s unique, fun - plus more to the point…it works!

Spiced Winter
• • • • • • • • •
2 tbsp olive oil 1 onion, peeled and finely chopped 1 clove garlic, peeled and crushed 2 tsp medium curry paste 300g carrots, peeled and diced 250g swede, peeled and diced 2 large parsnips, peeled and diced 1.4 litre vegetable stock Crème fraîche or natural yoghurt, parsnip crisps (see tip) and crushed coriander seeds, to garnish
To make the parsnip crisps, use a potato peeler to shave long thin strips from one large peeled parsnip. Half fill a large deep frying pan with vegetable oil and heat until a cube of bread dropped in the hot oil browns in 30 seconds. Fry the strips of parsnip in the hot oil for 1-2 minutes until crisp and golden. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain well on kitchen paper.
22
Heat the oil in a large deep pan over a medium heat. Add the onion and garlic and fry for 6-7 minutes until softened. Stir in the curry paste and cook for 1 minute then add the diced vegetables and cover and cook gently for 5 minutes. Pour in 900ml of the chicken stock and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Bring to the boil then reduce the heat and simmer, uncovered, for 30 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender. Cool for 10 minutes. Puree the soup in a blender or food processor (in batches if necessary) and return to the pan. Stir in another 300ml of the remaining stock and heat through gently. If you prefer a soup with a thinner consistency add the rest of the stock. Adjust the seasoning to taste and serve in warmed bowls garnished with a spoonful of crème fraîche or natural yoghurt, parsnip crisps and crushed coriander seeds.

Carryduff is primarily viewed as a commuter town and, as such, there is a need to create a sense of community and belonging in the local area. The creation of a local Community Forum was identified as an ideal way forward. After a series of one to one meetings with existing groups in the area, followed by a collective meeting of existing groups, it was decided to establish a Steering Group whose task was to start the process of developing a new Carryduff Forum.

In 2014, this steering group met on over 10 occasions culminating in a public meeting on the 6 th November 2014 in Lough Moss Leisure Centre and an opportunity for the group to share its ideas with people from the wider Carryduff area. The meeting was well attended with a turnout of over 120 people including representatives from local businesses, community groups and individual residents. There was unanimous agreement at the meeting to establish a Forum and this was further collectively supported by a range of political parties whose elected members were also in attendance. The Steering Group outlined its strategic thinking for the Forum and presented the meeting with a copy of the constitution which was unanimously adopted.

Carryduff Regeneration Forum is now a registered association and has applied for Charitable Status. The Management Committee for Carryduff Regeneration Forum was also agreed and, after the first meeting of the new association, an Executive Committee was appointed.
The Forum’s Vision is to help bring the heart back into Carryduff through the creation of an inclusive and regenerated area with a greater sense of community. The Purpose of the Forum is to help facilitate the regeneration of Carryduff by influencing decision makers to provide improved facilities and services for the benefit of those who live in the area and to be an effective, influential, inclusive, respected, recognised and credible voice for the people of Carryduff. The first meeting of the new Forum was held on 26 th November 2014 and, since that time, the committee has met at least monthly in the Lough Moss Centre. One of the first tasks which the committee undertook was the organisation of an art competition for primary school children to design a logo for the new group based on what they liked about living in Carryduff. The competition was open to local schools and also publicised on the Carryduff Regeneration Forum Facebook page. First prize consisted of a Tesco voucher plus a prize-giving ceremony for the winning pupil, their class and teachers at Hillsborough Castle, including a tour of the house and garden. It was won by Krystin Hayward, a P7 pupil at Carryduff Primary School and the entire class made the trip to Hillsborough Castle in June. In addition, a number of runner-up prizes were awarded to pupils from St. Joseph’s Primary School to include vouchers from Funtastic and Dundonald Ice Bowl. Regeneration being a key concern of the Forum, the group was extremely (left) Carryduff PS winner at Hillsborough and (right) runners up from St. Joseph’s PS

interested in the news that plans for the redevelopment of the Carryduff Centre site had been lodged with Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council Planning Office. Although broadly supportive of the planned redevelopment of this site, the Forum recognises its strategic importance within the context of Carryduff and was hopeful of a high quality mixed use proposal with a significant proportion of much-needed retail space. Following a thorough review of the submitted application, the group has submitted a letter of concern objecting to the proposed scheme, in its current format, based on a number of key policy issues. The content of the letter can be viewed on the Forum’s Facebook page. In July of this year the group organised a Fundraising Quiz Night at Eight South. A good turnout, some tricky questions and generous raffle prizes helped ensure a good night was had by all and the Forum hopes to repeat the event in the future. In August, the group was awarded funding to assist with the recruitment of volunteers through the DSD Small Grants for Volunteering Programme administered by the Association of Independent Volunteer Centres and Limavady Community Development Initiative. And, just recently, it received confirmation of funding for a community event to be held in connection with the erection of a Christmas Tree.
The Carryduff Switching-On Ceremony will be held in the car park of Eight South on Wednesday 2nd December at 6:30PM with entertainment and light refreshments on offer.
Throughout its first year the Forum has actively liaised with local Councillors, Council Officers and MLAs regarding development, infrastructure, traffic and social issues, to name but a few. Members participated in a Community Consultation Event to inform the drawing up of a new Community Plan and have been involved in an arts event to promote Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council’s Good Relations Week. In order to maintain a representative body for the whole of the Carryduff area, it was agreed that the following 14 types of groups would form the basis of the overall structure of the Forum. (a) youth; (b) playgroup; (c) sports; (d) culture/music/art; (e) women’s groups; (f) churches; (g) schools/education; (h) community/residents’ groups; (i) older people’s groups; (j) farmers; (k) ethnic minority groups; (l) retail businesses; (m) non-retail businesses; (n) individual residents. The Group is currently seeking to expand its membership and would be keen to welcome representatives from any of the above groups, as well as those who are not in work and people with disabilities, as volunteer members on either the main committee or a number of specific sub-groups. SPAR CARRYDUFF has the following opportunities for self-motivated, highly responsible, enthusiastic people:
Nature Focus In another of a new series of articles about our local environment, Helen Long writes about her observations of nature a bit further afield, outside Carryduff. This month Helen visits Downpatrick.... No wonder our Patron Saint liked DOWNPATRICK so much that he used it as his base for spreading Christianity! It’s just so beautiful that the visitor is spoiled for choice; but I am going to begin with the River Quoile. After all, that was what brought Patrick to the town in the first place, literally!
1 Sheets + Overs LOC96095 Carryduff Magazine Sig 3 Back
Over the years, the Quoile has been gradually reined in by a series of barriers, to prevent it from flooding the town. It has now receded from where I remember it as a child, and there are some lovely wooded walks on the reclaimed land along its banks. It is relatively free of pollution, as I recently met a man sitting fishing, and he told me there were both perch and roach to be found. There might even be eels, and if you’re lucky you could spot an otter or kingfisher! In such an area of outstanding natural beauty, there is plenty of birdlife, too. Of course there are swans… Although well hidden in the branches, I could hear several varieties of the tit family. And there are also some wonderful little Goldcrests calling conversationally to one another. Most spectacularly, a dragonfly whizzed past me - a wonderful, unforgettable sight!
The River Quoile
A family of Mute Swans on the Quoile
But I want to tell you about an astonishing vision I had in late September, a first for me. My camera’s battery was frustratingly flat, so here is the beastie, thanks to the Internet: At first I thought it was a snake or a lizard; then maybe a dragonfly nymph. But when I looked it up at home, I found it was the caterpillar of the Elephant Hawkmoth! ‘My’ one was vertical on a stalk of Willowherb, apparently its preferred food Elephant hawkmoth caterpillar plant. It was sharing the stalk with a snail. Just look at those double-eye markings, which aren’t eyes at all! It was 2-3” long and quite chunky. You have to expect the unexpected in nature, and prepare to be amazed! (And remember to charge your camera battery!) Wait for a break in the traffic on the nearby road, and then just stop. And listen. You will hear the soft swish of the wind in the trees across the river very soothing to mind and soul. Mark Twain wrote wonderfully about the Mississippi River; but we have our own wonderful waterway much nearer Adult Elephant home - only 15 miles Down the road! Go and explore; and prepare to be amazed! Helen Long hawkmoth 38

NIEMANN-PICK DISEASE A family with Belfast roots are reaching out to spread worldwide awareness of a rare and devastating disease. It all began with little Sam Evans’ diagnosis of Niemann-Pick Disease (type C). The eight-year-old from Leeds faces an uncertain future due to this widely-unknown terminal disease, often described as ‘childhood Alzheimer’s’ due to the dementia-like symptoms it can bring on at an early age. Sam was diagnosed as a baby, largely due to his dad Will’s medical knowledge as a doctor – but on average it can take up to five years for a diagnosis of this complex disease. Sam has a strong family connection with Belfast – his grandmother Pat Fitzsimons is from Belfast, and his great Auntie Kathleen McGarrigle and her family still live here. Kathleen’s niece (and Sam’s Auntie) Geri Fitzsimons is spearheading what she hopes will be an international campaign of fundraising and awareness; and is hoping the generous spirit of the Northern Ireland community can be extended to her beloved nephew. Geri says; “Sam’s birthday is at the beginning of November, so what we are aiming for is to make the week of November 14th – 21st 2015 an international week of action and awareness, involving our friends and family around the world. We want as many people as possible to know what Niemann-Pick Disease is, and hopefully raise some much-needed money for research and treatment.” Geri has organised a Christmas Fayre and a four hour danceathon (with her 70-year-old dad taking part throughout!) over in England, but would love Northern Ireland to join the efforts. Anyone who would like to donate some money or get in touch with Geri can do so through her fundraising page: www.justgiving.com/FIT4SAM More information on Niemann-Pick Disease can be found by visiting www.niemann-pick.org.uk

Harvest Time in St. Ita’s The Primary 3 children have been out harvesting and tasting the vegetables that they sowed and planted towards the end of Primary 2. As part of their ‘Harvest’ topic they had a wonderful time pulling out carrots, beetroot, onions and garlic. They also harvested spring onions and some huge broccoli heads! The grand finale of harvesting involved an enthusiastic re-enactment of ‘The Enormous Turnip Story’, during which the children successfully pulled out the two turnips that they had planted in June! Pictures above. P7 Rugby The children in Primary 7 were invited to participate in a Rugby World Cup Blitz organised by Instonian’s RFC. The children enjoyed a fantastic morning at Cook Rugby club where they played games against other schools and were treated to hot dogs at the end of the games.

MILLENNIUM INTEGRATED PRIMARY SCHOOL Congratulations to our new P1 classes who were welcomed to school in a special Harvest service and dedication. It was wonderful to see so many parents in attendance. Many thanks for your kind donations to our harvest table. All items received were distributed to families in the local area. MIPS Gaelic team recently took part in a football tournament at St Nicholas’ PS, Ardglass. Millennium put up a good fight against Our Lady & St Patrick’s from Downpatrick, St Patrick’s PS in Saul and St Joseph’s Carryduff. The boys won two of their games and lost one. They made it to the final of the tournament on goal difference but were beaten by St Ita’s. This was the first outing for this team and they played very well. Many thanks to Mr Donnelly for his coaching skills.
Our P2 classes had a ‘Medieval Day’ as part of their ‘Houses and Homes’ topic. They were learning about different types of homes and the types of people that lived in them. Can you spot Robin Hood and Maid Marian?! Well done to all the parents for all the amazing costumes! Thanks to our Parent’s Council who continue to do fantastic fundraising for Millennium IPS. The latest event run by the Parent’s Council was a pub quiz. The event was very well attended and quizmaster Johnny Hero from U105 certainly challenged our tired brains! Many thanks also to Temple Golf and Country Club for providing the venue and a tasty supper to keep every concentrating. Thanks too for those that donated ballot prizes and everyone who came along to support the school on the night. 44
