to your October magazine
Hello again everyone,
Here we are with the October issue, the nights are drawing in and it’s getting colder. I’ve remembered this year to remind you all - the clocks go back on Sunday 26th October, and Summer time will officially be over. But it’s not all doom and gloom, we’ve lots of reading in this issue to keep you entertained, AND a competition! You could win a batch of lovely cup cakes from Farm House Treats. Just turn to page 26 to read more and please remember to enter! For puzzle aficionados, there’s a new word puzzle to tackle on page 28, loads of special offers (all listed below) and Helen’s back with another local Nature article on page 38. The keen eyed among you will spot there’s a little design tweak on this page. Look out for more page makeovers next issue, and it’s the Focus birthday issue too. Perfect timing for a little bit of a revamp! Until next time....

Thinking of changing your bath for a walk in shower? Here at Brae Bathrooms we have noticed an increasing demand for this service. Most installations are similar in layout, but never quite the same! With a lot of bathrooms having a hot press or large windows on one or more walls its not always as simple as the large ads in Sunday papers would suggest. However at Brae Bathrooms we have a number of solutions to suit your space and your practical needs. We have our own showroom where these goods are on display. We all reach the stage where a bath can be a little difficult to use and the worry of a fall becomes a reality. However we still want our bathroom to be modern, clean and easy to use. Most installations are completed within 2 days (or a little longer for a full bathroom refurbishment). If you feel you could use our service, please visit our showroom, call Brae Bathrooms on 02890 703422 or email norman@braebathrooms.co.uk for your free consultation and quotation.

Movie Focus
By Peter Stevenson
AT THE CINEMA: Lets Be Cops 15 (104 mins)
Why can ‘comedy’ writers not leave the police force well alone? Did we learn nothing from Police Academy and its seemingly endless sequels?! This movie sees Ryan and Justin (Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr. respectively) find that dressing up as cops earns the admiration and respect of their fellow underachievers and, more importantly, women. So, they continue, with their costumes becoming more elaborate (who knew you could buy a police car on eBay?) until they eventually become entangled in the effort to apprehend a drugs gang headed by Grolin (Andy Garcia).

The most important question to answer when reviewing a comedy film is, quite simply, is it funny? Well…mmm…I suppose it is. Screenwriters Luke Greenfield and Nicholas Thomas are rather adept at poking fun at the characters’ foibles and, as such, the ‘buddy comedy’ element is successfully humorous while also being surprisingly heartfelt. However, when the script’s attention is not focussed on the two central characters, all jokes fall flat, despite the valiant performances from the supporting cast. Where this movie shines (ironically, for a comedy) is in Garcia’s performance as the po-faced Godfather figure of the sinister drugs gang our heroes must defeat. His performance is insidious and sinister enough to provide a real element of danger in an otherwise frivolous laugh-fest. Director Luke Greenfield concocts a proficient movie from a shaky premise, a feat which alone deserves kudos aplenty. It is, however, an average movie, forever stymied in a quagmire of mediocrity; there is nothing which particularly stands out as a reason to see this movie. If you like ‘buddy’ pictures, however, this movie could be just what you have been looking for, otherwise avoid! 3 / 5
On DVD: Bad Neighbours 15 (97 mins) Another month, another Zac Efron movie. Akin to someone like Jennifer Aniston, Efron, in a desperate attempt to keep from being typecast, has released a stream of bland, inoffensive, and ultimately mediocre fare. Can Bad Neighbours break this cycle? Mac and Kelly Radner (Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne) are typical thirtysomethings; complete with their first child. When the house next door is bought, they hope for neighbours like themselves, with whom they can form lasting friendships. Things don’t go quite to plan however, as frat Delta-Psi-Beta, complete with fraternity president Teddy (Zac Efron) move in, determined to have the biggest party in history. Relations between the contenders begin warmly enough until the inevitable row over noise results in an increasing series of tit–for-tat pranks. In its defence, parts of Bad Neighbours are hilarious; the air-bag prank is particularly funny and completely unexpected. That, however, is where any memorable aspects of this film end. The plot is just not a plot, rather it is a disconnected series of skits, some funny, and some utter drivel. Rogen and Byrne portray a couple at the end of their tether but are always surprisingly believable and, dare I say it, relatable. Efron’s ‘big-man-on-campus’ routine is tiresome and it is not until Teddy sheds his frat-house ways that Efron can be taken seriously as an actor. Director Nicholas Stoller can be forgiven, up to a certain point, for giving his cast a loose, devil-may-care environment in which to hone their comic skills, but, ironically, it would have been better had he been stricter about adhering to the script. 3 / 5 36

In another of our series of articles about our local environment, Helen Long writes about her observations of nature, right here in Carryduff What a lovely summer we have just had, especially when it lasted well through September!! Predictably, it has produced a bumper harvest, so all the farmers will be happy! Even I have been able to harvest 4 pounds of blackberries from the brambles growing over my fence. Lough Moss Park has also done well, with an abundance of apples following the sweetly scented blossom on the trees; and I picked some blackcurrants from a bush growing there, though hardly enough to fill a pie! The spectacular display of flowers on the wild roses has resulted in a super crop of rose-hips! Oh, and I nearly forgot the hawthorn - creamed with blossom during May; now blushing with haws in the autumn! And all this wonderful bounty would not be possible without the bees. Food‌for thought. I feel the need to do a quick Before & After sequence now. They say A picture is worth a thousand words, so there is little more I need to say; except to advise you to look for yourselves - nature is wonderful, whatever season you choose. Get out there, and enjoy it! Apple (left).. . ...and Rose (right)
One final Before & After that I simply must share with you involves the house martins in the Muskett area, where I counted about 10 active nests this summer (the droppings are a good clue!). Hawthorn (above) They had a very successful breeding season, but by the time you’re reading this, they will be thousands of miles away in Africa. Perhaps a little more food for thought.

St Joseph’s Primary School Primary 2 have had a bumper harvest this year. Last year they planted beetroot, potatoes, onions and rhubarb. Finally after a long wait they have been able to harvest their vegetables and take them home. They had a super day picking their vegetables with the help of Mrs McMeel. Evie from Primary Seven has won a Blue Peter Badge. She got it for sending a poem in to the show. The producers were so impressed with her work that they sent her one of their famous badges. She’s wearing her badge with pride.

Millennium Integrated Primary School Now that summer is over we are already working hard in school. The Principal and staff at Millennium IPS would like to extend a huge welcome to all the families returning for another year and to those families just joining us for the first time. Preparations are underway for our Harvest Service and welcome for our new Primary One children. We were delighted to have received the news from the education minister, John O’Dowd, at the end of last term that Millennium will be allowed grow to a ‘double intake’ school. Mr O’Dowd felt that “The evidence shows that there is sufficient demand in the area for integrated education to justify the increase in enrolment proposed by the governors”. We currently have two P1 and P2 classes. Over the next few years this will increase until we have two of every class. This is an exciting time for Millennium and we look forward with enthusiasm to the changes that are ahead. Please mention the Carryduff Focus Magazine when contacting advertisers
