Hello again everyone,

Articles & Features:

I’ve just had the best Summer in years, partly attributed to a mesh insect screen that attaches to a door using Velcro. It cost me the princely sum of £2.15 (plus p&p) and it was worth every penny and more. Lest you think I’m exaggerating, we used to be plagued by all sorts of insects flying in the open door from the garden, attracted by the light coming in from the windows opposite, but then getting stuck on the inside. Sometimes there would literally be 20 or 30 of them, yuk. Not anymore! And it only took our dog 2 goes to work out how to get out through the mesh curtain by herself. Sometimes it’s the little things that make life so much nicer!

We’ve also embraced the idea of ‘throwing stuff out’ quite radically over this Summer (mind you, the garage is now a mess again) but the house is tidier! And it’s fresher thanks to the repainting we’ve had done (thanks to Francis and co on the inside and to John on the outside). I’ve finally got around to sorting out a Facebook page for the magazines, so please find us on Facebook and be the first to get updates on the next issues, distribution timings and have access to the online magazines. Search for Local Focus Magazines Until next time....

University is a time for studying, socialising and watching cult movies, and gadgets play a crucial part in all of those activities. So what technology should your teen or twenty-something be packing? A laptop or a tablet is essential, and now that Windows 10 is available there are stacks of great laptops at rock-bottom prices. Most of the market is concentrated in the sub-£300 price range, but if you can afford to spend a little bit more you’ll be rewarded with better screens, more storage and smoother processors - all of which come in handy for both work and play. Don’t forget about a printer, too, but make sure you look into the cost of cartridges: many firms use the Gillette model, where the razor is given away at a loss and the money is made on the blades. Inkjet printers are notorious for this, so a printer that costs £30 might cost twice as much to run as a printer costing just a little bit more. Your child will need software too. Microsoft Office is the standard, although some specialist courses may require specialist software such as statistical analysis software. If it’s Office, though, the Office 365 for University deal is

6

superb value for money: It’s £59.99 for a four-year subscription that covers 2 PCs, Macs or tablets, including iPads and Android devices. It also offers 1TB of online storage. If you don’t go for Office, it’s still worth looking at Microsoft’s free OneNote program, which is available for PCs and Macs, iPads, iPhones and Android and which is a truly superb notetaking application. Apps can be great for non-uni things too: we love Paprika for storing recipes, Readly for magazines and Spotify or Apple Music for tunes. A few low-tech devices are smart buys too. A simple carbon monoxide detector can be a genuine life-saver, especially in rented accommodation where landlords don’t always carry out the checks and maintenance they should. A Leatherman multi-tool or one of its many imitators is great too, offering pliers, wire cutters, files, screwdrivers, bottle openers and can openers in a single device. One important issue for students is internet access. If it’s available in their flat or halls of residence, great, but if it isn’t you might be better off with mobile broadband rather than messing around with the hassle of fixed-line broadband connections with their minimum contracts. Three’s MiFi device is a

little box that connects to the phone network and offers a wireless connection for phones, tablets and computers. Prices start at £10.87 per month and the devices work anywhere with 4G data coverage, which means most big towns and cities. Another wireless item to consider is a wireless speaker. The best ones use Bluetooth to connect to computers, phones or tablets, and if you avoid the very low end of the market you can get surprisingly good sound for surprisingly little money. Decent wireless speakers start at around £200, although it’s possible to spend much more. Unless you’re feeling flush and your child’s really into music, there’s no real need to do that. Last but not least, there’s the smartphone. In the unlikely event that your child doesn’t already have one, a decent Android phone such as the Motorola Moto G costs less than £150. It’s easy to program your own number into the speed dial and create a wallpaper that says CALL YOUR MOTHER. Images left to right: Microsoft Office 365 for University; Leatherman Charge multi-tool; Unbranded MiFi wireless adapter for 4G/3G phones; TDK wireless speakers

Doesn't our mum of 3 look amazing? JulieAnn Vaughan has thanked her local morning Slimming World group & consultant, Johnny, for the support, encouragement and motivation she received after joining the Tuesday Ramada Plaza 9:30am group. JulieAnn is on many medications due to poor health, yet this didn't stop her as she dropped 4st 3lb this year. Johnny named JulieAnn ‘Ramada 9:30am - Woman of the Year’. He said ’She looks amazing and even with a busy family life & poor health, she's shown that Slimming World suits everyone. JulieAnn before I couldn't be more proud of her, or more happy for her".

Preheat the oven to 180C/Fan 160C/Gas Mark 4. Grease an 18cm x 28cm tray-bake tin and line the base with baking paper. • 250g plain flour • 2 tsp baking powder • 140g butter, chilled and diced • 125g caster sugar • 1 medium egg, beaten

• 750g ricotta cheese • 225g caster sugar • Zest and juice of 1 lemon • 3 medium eggs, beaten • 100ml soured cream • 1 tbsp cornflour • Fresh mint sprigs, to decorate

To make the base, sift together the flour and baking powder into a large bowl. Rub in the butter until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs then stir in the sugar. Reserve a third of the mixture and chill in the fridge. Stir the beaten egg into the rest of the mixture to make a crumbly dough. Spread into the base of the prepared tin and press down firmly in an even layer. Bake the cheesecake base for 15-20 minutes, or until pale golden. Remove from the oven and leave to cool for 15 minutes. Reduce the oven temperature to 160C/ Fan 140C/ Gas Mark 3. To make the filling, beat the ricotta cheese, sugar and lemon juice and zest in a bowl until creamy then gradually beat in the eggs. Fold in the soured cream and cornflour and spread the mixture over the warm base. Sprinkle the reserved fine crumble mixture over the top in an even layer. Bake in the oven for 30-35 minutes, or until set and pale golden. Leave in the tin to cool completely then chill for 2-3 hours. Slice into 12 bars and serve decorated with fresh mint sprigs. For an extra fruity flavour, scatter some fresh blueberries or raspberries over the cheesecake mixture before sprinkling with the crumble mixture.

Active Sitting. It won’t replace standing or walking, but makes sitting healthier. Try raising your heels up and down; contracting your stomach muscles; raising and lower your lower leg from knee height or whole leg from hip height; swivelling your office chair using just your hips; tensing, stretching and bending your arms; rolling your shoulders.

Using the Pomodoro Technique, described at www.pomodorotechnique.com.

This time management technique inserts regular breaks – that’s the time to get active. So next time you’re about to start something, think does it have to be done sitting down? If not, then don’t sit! Bear in mind, though, that constant standing isn’t ideal either. Experts recommend aiming for a 50/50 split between sitting and activity.

Carryduff Your Local Community Spar Spar Carryduff, with the help of parents, has been helping two of our local primary schools - Carryduff Primary and Moneyrea Primary to raise money for special projects. Carryduff PS used the funds raised to purchase eco equipment which will be used to develop an eco garden at the school to attract wildlife. Moneyrea PS used the funds raised to purchase cross country equipment designed by the students themselves - you can see the fabulous new cross country kit in the pictures. The equipment was presented to the schools by Alan and Allison Ewing, who run Spar Carryduff. Nature Focus In another of our series of articles about our local environment, Helen Long writes about her observations of nature, right here in Carryduff

Let me tell you a story. One day Helen sowed some Victoria Cross poppies. They were special ones to commemorate the 100th anniversary of WW1. They grew very well and produced some stunning blooms, with the distinctive white cross emblazoned in the centre. In due time the flowers were over and Helen removed the plants and hung them up in her garage, hoping to preserve the seed-heads. After a few weeks she checked to see how they were doing, and was astonished to discover something alive in one—a small wriggling caterpillar, brownish in colour. On closer inspection of several others, she found some seed-heads with little holes punched through them. Helen realised that the holes had been made Continued on next page 34

An entomologist from Queen’s University soon put her right, saying it was most likely a Mamestra Brassicae, or Cabbage Moth to you and me! Quite common, and often regarded as a pest by farmers. But Helen just couldn’t help marvelling at the ingenuity and expertise of this little moth, sneaking into her poppies at dead of night, while all of Carryduff was safely tucked up in bed, and laying its clutch of eggs right in the heart of the cross. Then nonchalantly flying off into nocturnal anonymity…And how clever of its babies to munch their way out into the cool night air, and the next exciting stage of their lifecycle… This all happened in a garden and garage in Carryduff; so it could well be happening in yours, too!

Movie Focus

By Peter Stevenson

AT THE CINEMA: Hot Pursuit 12A (87 mins) Reese Witherspoon can do comedy; she has nothing to prove: remember the adorably misunderstood Elle Woods in Legally Blonde? Why then, has she chosen to head back down the road to comedy with this yawn-inducing giggle -free police farce? I dunno but let’s get on: the story goes that Officer Cooper (Witherspoon), is desperate for the respect her father earned during his lawenforcement career, so she, in her ‘by-the-book’ efforts to live up to her goals has become a bit too over-zealous in both her personal and professional lives. So she jumps at the chance to protect Daniella (Sofia Vergara), a testifying witness at the trial of drug-lord Cortez (Joaquin Cosio). Things, however, do not go to plan and ‘comedy’ ensues.

1 Sheets + Overs LOC93443 Carryduff Magazine Sig Back

Witherspoon has a knack for turning unappealing character traits into a character’s central redeeming feature. Here, Cooper’s pedantic fussiness could be instantly irksome but it becomes her best feature. Were this role given to a different actress, Cooper would be a horrible principle character. Vergara does her best to keep up with Witherspoon but she is out-classed in some scenes, whether they be scenes of utter frivolity or those of the utmost seriousness. Robert Kazinsky plays Randy, Witherspoon’s love interest but he proves so uninteresting, I’m not quite sure why his character is even there. The director is Anne Fletcher, whose previous movies like The Proposal and 27 Dresses give an idea of the light-hearted , playfulness you should expect from this movie: all shallow froth with nothing below the surface. 2 / 5

On DVD: The Duff 12A (100 mins) What is the last thing awkward, self-conscious, brooding teens need at school in these days of cyber-bullying and size-zero paranoia? That’s right, another label from which to run and cower; or else run the risk of a lifelong association with said label. This new label is the DUFF, a particularly soulcrushing acronym which stands for Designated Ugly Fat Friend, the approachable member of a group of beautiful people. Think She’s All That or some equally ridiculous teen flick in which the frump turns out to be the star, her best mate becomes her perfect boyfriend and a few essential life lessons are learnt along the way. It is difficult to argue that this movie is instant teen drivel, akin to Not Another Teen Movie; the script can be, in places, witty, even satirical, while immersed in the sharp gossip of the high school idiom. Mae Whitman’s Bianca and Robbie Amell’s Wesley are a cut above the stereotypical, vacuous, flat characters associated with most teen flicks; they are more rounded with a definite charm. However, this is where any positives end, mainly because it all feels so unoriginal: all the main issues have been tackled many times before and even the cruel bitchiness seems dilute and lacking punch. It’s almost as if director Ari Sandel has begun with a new and beguiling notion, namely the DUFF itself, but, during the R&D phase, decided to cut a few corners. The result is a movie with huge potential that is never quite realised so it is doomed, never to be heard of again, unless perhaps it is found in the bargain bin! 3 / 5 36

MILLENNIUM INTEGRATED PRIMARY SCHOOL Akrowa African Drumming and Dance Ensemble from Ghana who visited Millennium IPS in June. Children from P5, 6 and 7 took part in a drumming and dance workshop and the whole school got to watch a drumming and dance display performed by both the Akrowa group and the children. The aim of the group is to promote and revive the rhythms of West Africa in the highly entertaining and colourful art form of drumming and dance. Akrowa means village in the local Ghanaian language. Children from KS2 took part in a 'Primary Links' programme with Blackwater Integrated College. The six week programme, funded by the Integrated Education Fund (IEF) involved children from Millennium IPS travelling to Blackwater to use computers and other technology & design equipment to design and manufacture Viking ships. Many thanks to Mr Jones and the team at Blackwater and the IEF for funding this project.
