W
What impressed us the most about Artisan Custom Closets is how much pride they have in ensuring their customers receive the best available product and design. And, we were equally awed by their impeccable commitment to detail and client service. The company’s president, Lisa Carlquist, had been working with closets for 15 years when a larger corporation bought out the mom and pop operation in which she was employed. Unwilling to succumb to big business and its practices, Lisa set out to create her own model of what custom storage design should look like in 2008. “That was the worst year to start a business in this industry,” Carlquist says. After wrestling with the challenges that entrepreneurship presented during a down economy, the company began to officially take off in 2010. To formulate a well-rounded business, however, Lisa knew that she would need to enlist the help of a team with varying skillsets. She chose people she knew from the industry as well as other prominent industry personnel to help build her brand. She chose the “best of the best for the Artisan brand.” And, as a result, Artisan Custom Closets operates with many employees having more than 12 years of experience in their fields. Lisa’s team has broken up the closet design process into four steps, the first of which being an in-home design consultation. Each customer is paired with a design consultant to meet in their own home to discuss the use and contents of the space. “Every space is different so we like to measure and take inventory of what the homeowners have, Lisa noted.” From there, a drawing is made with Artisan Custom Closets’ Computer-Aided Design (CAD) system. Customers are then able to review the designs and alter details such as door style and color, hardware and closet accessories. Most customers choose to visit Artisan’s local showroom and manufacturing facility to make their final selections. The showroom also offers displays of garages, offices, pantries, craft rooms and murphy beds to round out the storage experience.

yet by giving their homes a “wow” factor (a new custom closet), Lisa says, “Custom closets increase the value of a home and adds a nice touch.” About 35 to 40 percent of our business comes from new construction.” Lisa, since moving from Powell, Tennessee, to take advantage of the opportunities Atlanta provides, has found nuances that make building closets in this city different; and more importantly, she has found ways to work with or around these while individualizing her company in the process. “Atlanta architecture often dictates that the closet is built over the garage which creates slopes and angles that can be difficult to work with. Because we are a manufacturer, we are able to design, manufacture and install any size or shape space. Our parts are truly custom, so any project is possible.” Being a manufacturer also positively impacts the timeliness of Artisan’s service. “Since we are not a franchise and we manufacture all of our pieces locally, we can replace parts within the day if there are any issues,” she explains.
Once final selections are made, all materials and parts needed for the job are ordered and, within 3 business days, the customer is contacted to schedule an exact installation date. Most installations can be completed in one day however larger jobs may take additional time. Artisan Custom Closets manufactures each closet in its 29,000 square foot showroom/warehouse in Marietta. Their Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) routers allow each closet or storage space to be cut individually based on the completed CAD designs. This process is extremely efficient and allows for little error. Artisan’s installers are all company employees and have all been thoroughly screened and background checked. Their installation crews have an average of 10 years of experience and are trained to leave your home cleaner than when they arrived! Artisan Custom Closets also provides special services for builders to make their homes stand out from other homes on the market. “We work with builders who don’t have a buyer 12

The 5th annual Roswell Wine Festival returns on Sunday, October 1st and is expected to attract a record-breaking crowd to Canton Street in historic Roswell. The festival has become a flagship event for the city drawing people from the entire metro area and beyond. With the festival around the corner, here are 5 reasons why this year’s event will be the biggest and best one yet. 1. More wine and wine enthusiasts than ever before. The 2017 festival will include over 1,600 attendees who will have the opportunity to enjoy a relaxing Sunday afternoon as they sip wine and stroll along Canton Street. Restaurants Osteria Mattone, Table & Main, and Vin25 are returning as platinum restaurant sponsors of the festival. The event will feature over 150 tasty wines from around the world, as well as a few made right here in Georgia. For the first time ever, the festival will host a tasting table with hand-selected favorites from past festivals to commemorate the event’s fifth year. 2. Coming together to give back. Festival co-founders Peggy Robinson and Dwight Cunningham had three tenets in mind when establishing the annual event - host a fantastic event for the city, support the local business community and benefit a local charity. While the festival is entirely sold out, one set of general admission and VIP tickets will be auctioned off for charity on Ebay in September. For almost half a century, the Child Development Association (CDA) has worked to prepare low-income families’ preschool children for success through early learning programs and care services. Their mission is to “enables the preschool children of low-income working families in our community to make a great start toward a bright future.” With affordability in mind, the CDA’s program has allowed par16
ents of these children to work full-time jobs and maintain stability to support their families. They are located at 89 Grove Way, in the heart of Roswell, in a building shared by nonprofits HomeStretch and Families First. cdakids.org HomeStretch is a foundation helping homeless families with young children to gain stability of housing and finances, within a goal time of 1- 2 years. These families, with both single-parent and married couples, are provided with “case management, life-skills education, mentoring and supportive housing” through two programs. these families to regain control of their finances through budgeting and debt payoff, as well as increased self-sufficiency through job stability and income increases. They have finance workshops and career coaching for mothers as well as tutoring and enrichment programs for children and teens. Family case management and age-appropriate mentoring are also available. thedrakehouse.org STAR House Foundation’s mission is to “enrich our community by promoting academic success and empowering lifelong achievement in at-risk children.” They hold after-school programs to at-risk youth in the area, providing tutors for academic support as well as enrichment activities supporting “character development, life skills enhancement, team-building, creative thinking, arts appreciation, and the importance
of giving back to others.” They currently operate within Mimosa Elementary School, Esther Jackson Elementary School, and Elkins Pointe Middle School, however in September of 2017, they will join Holcomb Bridge Middle. starhousefoundation.org The mission of North Fulton Community Charities (NFCC) is “to build self-sufficiency and prevent homelessness and hunger in our community by providing emergency assistance and enrichment programs.” They cater to families in Roswell, Alpharetta, Johns Creek, Milton and Mountain Park. Through their Education Center and other services, they are able to educate and support 4,000 families annually. nfcchelp.org Senior Services North Fulton (SSNF) benefits seniors age 60 and above through programs such as Meals on Wheels, TOPS Transportation Program (to medical appointments), Pantry to You, and Meals On Wheels for Pets. They also operate four senior centers in Roswell, Alpharetta/Crabapple, Milton and Sandy Springs. “Our senior centers are a great place for seniors to gather for socialization, health and wellness classes, art classes. We also provide a hot lunch Monday through Friday. We provided 19,000 hot lunches in 2016,” says Heather Terry of SSNF. Their group of 500 volunteers as well as generous financial donors help them continue to service the elderly in need. ssnorthfulton.org

HELPING HAITI
I
In 2010, Haiti experienced a devastating earthquake that killed hundreds of thousands and affected millions. The Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince, was among the most damaged cities. One year later, it was still in shambles. “There were thousands of people, especially women and children still living on the streets. Most who had shelter were living in relief tents or cardboard that had been there for over a year,” said Nancy Tolbert Yimaz, a repeat missionary to Haiti. She is also a member of Roswell Rotary, whose team she and her daughter joined on a mission to help. Roswell Rotary was assisted by 410 Bridge, a local relief organization in Alpharetta. The 410 Bridge provided all the logistical plans for the trip, and the group was able to assist a deaf community who were displaced by the devastating quake. With the help of Roswell Rotary and the Lions Club, the team was also able to provide eyesight testing and prescription glasses (as well as non-prescription sunglasses) to hundreds of adults and children in need, “many who had never ever thought they would have their vision improved.” Roswell Rotary later decided to move their international efforts to a project in Guatemala, and Nancy was saddened to not be able to return to Haiti. However, after receiving a phone call from Robert Turnbull, Youth Minister at First Baptist Church of Roswell, a miraculous opportunity arose. Robert expressed strong interest in gathering youth for mission work the next year -- in Haiti.

“I was excited beyond words to think that our very own church would take up the baton and carry the project that we started in Haiti onto the next level,” added Nancy. “With the support of the Senior Minister Dr. Kevin Head and with Robert Turnbull’s leadership and dedication, one year later we were back in Haiti.” Instead of Port-au-Prince, the group traveled five hours outside of the capital, by Jeep, to a remote village called Cercade. This year in 2017, there was a team of 32 young adults and pastors. Over the past four years, teams like this from First Baptist have planted bean and cornfields, as well as coffee and mango trees. They’ve created their own language workbooks, with which they teach the Haitian youth, translating to English from Creole. They have visited remote homes to talk and pray with their inhabitants; they’ve also continued to perform eye tests and provide glasses to the community. “One lady who we saw is 110 years old, she always comes out to see us. She walks for miles to get to the main part of the village. This year we tested her eyes and sure enough, she was in need of glasses. When we put the glasses on her, it was as if a light had suddenly shined down from above. She could see clearly for the first time. That is God at work, not me, but God,” says Nancy. “The people of Haiti have given us so much love over the years and have taught me the truly important part of life. It’s not ‘things’ but it is family, people, love, understanding, kindness and your faith. You don’t have to travel to Haiti to learn those things.”

enAble of Georgia Offers Parents Support Services for Their Adult Children with Developmental Disabilities

enAble of Georgia will be holding their 23rd annual Golf and Tennis Tournament on Monday, October 16th at White Columns Country Club. This fundraiser follows the nonprofit’s Summer Wine Auction which occurred in July and the Dare to Dream Gala that took place in March. Founded in 1979 by North Georgia parents, enAble has set out to provide superior care and opportunities for adult children with development disabilities. Often, after graduating from high school, those with developmental disabilities find there are few options for them. enAble’s mission is to break down the wall of limitations these families face to allow them to develop socially and more independently. Adults from ages 22 to 86 (the age of the nonprofit’s oldest member) are housed in 18 different group homes. Each house accommodates four individuals and is equipped with 24 hour support. There is no time limit for enAble’s residents and some members have stayed with the residency program for more than 20 years. “We support them until we can’t,’ April Olsen, enAble’s Development Manager says. Twelve of these group homes are located in Alpharetta, Johns Creek and Roswell; and the other six are located in South Fulton. Group day programs are also held in both

North and South Fulton where individuals may take part in avocations such as music therapy, tennis, theatre and the production of a news publication. Each group session caters to about 50 people at a time. enAble also provides prevocational services that provide tools to help individuals with developmental disabilities find jobs and instruction on how to maintain employment. In the future, enAble hopes to be able to care for even more adults because Fulton County’s needs exceed the current facilities. To be able to maintain this level of care and expand to accommodate more individuals, enAble holds fundraisers throughout the year including the annual Gala and Wine Auction. “This year’s auction was hosted by Bentley Atlanta. They provided tastings and prizes for guests, ” Olsen says. WellStar North Fulton Hospital is now offering the Know Your Heart program, a screening that can help determine patients’ risk for heart disease, stroke and other serious conditions.

The WellStar Know Your Heart program is a preventive, self-pay screening program that offers two levels of testing performed at North Fulton Hospital. Patients can get basic or advanced screenings depending on their age, symptoms and risk factors.
During the consultation patients receive risk factor education, diet, weight and exercise recommendations, as well as a personalized report to take home.
“This is a very successful program offered by WellStar Health System and we’re excited to offer it here at North Fulton,” said Hunt Anderson, M.D., medical director of North Fulton’s cardiology program. “Oftentimes we know that big events like heart attacks or strokes could have been prevented if risk factors had been addressed, so it is important to take a proactive approach.” The screening uses a combination of basic labs and a cardiac CT scans to identify heart disease before someone shows any signs or symptoms. The labs look at things like inflammation and cholesterol which can be indicators of heart disease. The cardiac CT calculates a calcium score. This low radiation scan looks at the calcium buildup in the walls of coronary arteries
“Each screening includes a consultation where we give the patient education on how to improve risk factors going forward and if there is any risk that needs to be addressed immediately we arrange everything so the patient can see a cardiologist,” Dr. Anderson said.
Know Your Heart is one of the efforts of the WellStar Cardiac Network to fight cardiac disease and provide people with the support they need to be successful. Unfortunately, heart disease – already the number one killer of men and women in the U.S. – is becoming even more prevalent. The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) recently released new figures showing a decrease in life expectancy for the first time since the early ‘90s. Experts credit this country’s growing problem with heart disease for these staggering statistics. The “Know Your Heart” screening is available to patients 18 years old and older and is especially good for people with high risk factors for heart disease, such as those with diabetes, hypertension and obesity. Stronger Muscles Make Stronger Brains

People who exercise probably know they are doing something good for their brain. After exercise, they feel good or happier or calmer. They think more clearly. Runners talk about the “runner’s high”. Most of those brain results come from cardiovascular exercise—raising your heart rate and keeping it raised for some length of time. Working your heart muscle. This does release specific “feel-good” chemicals in the brain, as well as get your brain fed and watered by oxygen and nutrient-carrying/waste-removing blood. But did you know that by gradually increasing muscle strength, you can also improve cognitive function? The Centre for Healthy Brian Ageing at the University of Sydney in Australia recently studied 100 older adults (ages 55+) living with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). These patients were chosen because 80% of patients diagnosed 32
with MCI develop Alzheimer’s disease after approximately 6 years. The patients were divided into 4 groups: resistance training, seated stretching, computer-based cognitive training (“brain games”), and a placebo. The computer-based and placebo groups showed zero improvement. However, the resistance group showed a proportional relation between improvement in brain function and improvement in muscle strength. They worked only twice a week for 6 months, and demonstrated measurable changes in attention, planning and organizing. According to the study’s lead author, Dr. Yorgi Mavros, “What we found is that the improvement in cognitive function was related to their muscle strength gains. “Families are the compass that guides us,” goes the old proverb, and never has it held truer than with Peach & The Porkchop’s owner, Chuck Staley. One of the primary reasons that Chuck and Alyssa opened Peach & The Porkchop two and a half years ago, was to provide a restaurant that would offer a reflection of how they and their family ate at home. A longtime proponent of eating only the freshest locally produced ingredients, this belief only strengthened once they had children. “I look at Peach & The Porkchop as an extension of my home, and we are always looking to teach our kids how to make healthy choices, what to look for in the foods you eat, and to avoid ingredients that you can’t pronounce,” reflects Staley. “My philosophy has always been, the simpler the better and that’s why none of the ingredients we purchase for our guests contain any additives, hormones, preservatives … or anything that’s not good for them,” Staley concludes. The day-to-day operations of running Peach & The Porkchop is truly a family managed business, catering to local families. Not only will you see Chuck just about every day in the kitchen and chatting with guests in the dining room, but most days you will also see his wife Alyssa as well as their two young daugh34

Each year, the Roswell Arts Festival is held on the third weekend in September at the Historic Town Square in Roswell, Georgia. Festival hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Entertainment featuring local singers and dance companies begins daily at noon. Children’s paintings, sand art, balloon animals and other activities are also available. The festival offers a variety of food trucks on site. Over the years, the Arts Festival has supported more than $1 million in projects throughout Roswell. The Roswell Recreation Association has worked tirelessly to raise money to support the Roswell Recreation, Parks, Historic and Cultural Affairs Department. Among its first projects, the Association built Roswell’s first tennis courts, a little league field, and paid part of the salary for Roswell’s first Recreation and Park Director’s salary. In 1966, the Association began the Roswell Arts Festival, the first arts festival held north of the Chattahoochee River, as a way to promote arts in Roswell and raise funds for recreation and parks in Roswell.

Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields Can Help With Healing By Melissa Mulvaney, MAE, DiplAc, LAc
I often hear patients complain of feeling “drained” or that they need a vacation to “recharge their batteries.” What they don’t know is that the human body pulses at the same electromagnetic frequency as the earth, and the earth works like a battery recharger for our bodies. This energy exchange is as vital to life as food, air and water. These patients have become “unplugged” from the earth’s ability to recharge them because they regularly work on concrete floors, wear rubber-soled shoes, and ride in vehicles with rubber tires. Additionally, evidence is mounting that “electrosmog” from man-made electromagnetic fields (EMFs) is a very real threat to our overall health. There are many ways to correct EMF imbalance in your body. Take a walk outside in your bare feet or work in the garden for a few minutes daily. Avoid placing your cell phone next to your head during calls. Unplug all wireless and electrical devices before going to sleep. Another way to supplement the earth’s natural frequencies is
with a Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) device. At our office, patients are invited to lie down on a comfortable PEMF mat in a darkened room for 5-20 minutes. Most patients report that they feel relaxed and recharged after a session.
